                        Jomo Kenyatta (1891–1978), who became a leader in the movement for African indepen-                 EDITION

                        an independent Kenya. Kenyatta included this story in his book Facing Mount Kenya (1938)
                        as an illustration of the relations between the Kikuyu people and Europeans. x As you read,
