Elephant Poaching In Africa
and the populations of elephants began to recover; CITES also secured an agreement to ban the
international trade in ivory. Since January 1990, the international trade of ivory has been illegal;
nevertheless, poaching is still greatly present in African countries (Rochon, 2013).
Supporting Argument #1:
To the millions of people who live around the world, elephants may not mean anything special. To
the African population and wildlife, however, elephants are a very necessary part of their lives. It is
extremely devastating to the individuals and animals who live in Africa that thousands of elephants
are being killed each year solely for their tusks. One can argue that the poaching of elephants for
ivory is a rather selfish act. As of late, ivory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Based on the expensive price of ivory, it is understood that it is a luxury item. Ivory is used for a
large variety of things, ranging from chopsticks and hair pins to billiard balls and piano keys. Why is
it, though, that these items cannot be made from other materials? Stated in an article titled "What Is
It About an Elephant's Tusks That Makes Them So Valuable?", the author says, "Today we make
them (items) out of plastic, but for thousands of years, ivory was among the best, if not the very
best, option –– the plastic of the pre–20th–century world" (Rosen, 2012). If manufacturers switched
from using ivory to using plastic to produce given items, the amount of deaths among elephants
could possibly decrease greatly. Due to individual's selfish tendencies and desire for high–quality
product, nearly 50,000 elephants are killed each year (Worland, Obama Announces Major
Restrictions on Ivory Trade, 2015). This endangered species is extremely valuable to the African
continent as elephants play a large role in the continent's landscape. Written in an article on the

Miscommunication is the source of the worlds major problems. Change can only occur after both
parties have an open conversation. If one party is unable to advocate for themselves, they're placed
in extreme danger. You wouldn't utilize manipulation to jeopardize a baby's life. The same logic
should apply to Elephants.
Babies are unable to communicate with words. This weakness makes them extremely vulnerable.
Thankfully billions of dollars have been spent to raise awareness. The vital cash flow has helped
establish a positive baby equality mindset. Investing a similar amount of money in pro humanity
causes; would keep the Elephant species alive.
Humans have the ability to advocate for equality. Elephants can't communicate with humans.

of the defensive budget should be spent on important things. Such as Animal rights, Human

Elephants would be abundant in a peaceful world. If this budget plan was implemented.
Animals are supposed to be treated with respect. Examples of disrespect include entertainment such
as Sea World and circuses. But instead of living harmoniously with them. Humans have tampered
with their way of life. The deadly combination of habitat destruction and poaching has eliminated

making a change. Time is running out and it dosn't look good. If a change dosn't occur soon, the few
remaining wild Elephants will become extinct.

Elephant Stereotypes
The main topic of both the reading and the lecture is about elephant behaviors. The reading proposes
three beliefs about elephants' behaviors; the lecture, however, finds these assumptions questionable,
citing three reasons to repudiates what is mentioned in the passage.
First, the passage claims that elephants have awareness about their death time. It stands to reason
that old elephants leave their herds to live lonely along sites near water. In addition, a large number
of elderly elephants found in sites around water illustrates this claims. Nevertheless, the lecture
rejects this idea, highlighting the fact that when elephants become old, they lose their ability to shew
hard materials. For this reason, they leave their herd to seek soft vegetables to eat, and because soft
materials are often found near water, they choose sites which are near water to live. That is why a
large number of elephant bones have been found in such places. ... Show more content on

On the other hand, the lecturer refutes this assumption, pointing out that because of the specific
structure of elephant's ears, they can be trained to move paintbrush in a specific pattern based on
what trainer teach to them. In other words, they do not have any cognizance about what they create

The Elephant, Ivory And Trade
For many years, the population of mammals has been declining. One mammal in particular that
caught my eye was the elephant. The elephant population has been decreasing significantly. One
elephant species in exact has suffered more than others, which is the African elephant. In Gao and
Clark's words "African elephants (Loxodonta africana) are in great danger" (Gao & Clark, 23). This
essay will review the factors that triggers humans to kill African elephants and the main cause
humans are killing African elephant's for. Although, humans might have valid reasons as to why
they kill innocent elephants, the killing of mammals doesn't service the circumstance that the planet
is losing that specific specie, which is something that it 's hard to ... Show more content on

After, iron tools were invented, which started increasing the human densities in forest zones
(Barnes, 179). According to Barnes, human densities were low until the16th century, right before
iron tools were seen (Barnes, 179). These tools helped farmer clear their way in the forests, making
it easier for them to farm (Barnes, 179). After the ivory demand from the Roman's, the Chinese
started doing the same thing, demanding for ivory which is still currently growing (Barnes, 178, Gao
& Clark, 23).
In more recent years, the ivory used has expanded in China (Gao & Clark, 24). The most common
way ivory is used in China is for carving as a traditional art (Gao & Clark, 24). Ivory carving wasn't
well–known in the Chinese culture until later in the 1950's, when ivory factories started establishing
(Gao &Clark, 24). Afterwards, ivory carving became a major foreign–currency–generating industry
in cities around China (Gao & Clark, 24). The industries failed a little after the Cultural Revolution
that occurred in the years between 1966 and 1976 (Gao & Clark, 24). Ivory is used in many things
but the most common way the Chinese culture uses it is by the following: figuring, ornaments,
scholar's articles, and vessels (Gao & Clark, 24).
As ivory started to get popular in the Chinese culture, new stores started selling ivory. In around
1936, there has been calculated around 126 ivory facilities in "Da Xin" (Gao & Clark, 24). "Da Xin"

Paper On African Elephant
My interest in the white rhino started about three years ago when I was doing a research paper about
the African elephant. I came across the white rhino as I was searching for the fellow species that
were being threatened by hunters in Africa. I never really paid much attention to large wild animals
before because of the fact that they are large and I figured that they wouldn't be threatened like most
smaller animals. One threat this wild rhino is facing is habitat loss due to agriculture and
settlements. Another threat is poachers who are interested in their horns to sell mainly across the
East. Although these threats are putting white rhinos at risk, through the efforts of groups such as the
Wild Foundation and World Wild Life, the prognosis for the continued survival of the white rhino is
good. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many pay little to no attention to this specie just like a hippopotamus or an animal that seems to
stand out as if it were a white tiger. These creatures are mostly located around South Africa, North
Africa and there are a few around East Africa as well (White Rhino; White Rhinoceros). The white
rhino is very muscular, "white rhinos have a square upper lip with almost no hair" and has its two
front ivory horns (White Rhino). These creatures travel in herds and mark their territory usually with
"vigorously scraped dung piles" (White Rhinoceros). Males have a small land range of 1–3km
although the females land range is about 6–20km or even lager depending on the population density

Persuasive Essay On Elephant
Many people aren't aware of how many elephants are killed each year by poachers. These poachers
want to kill elephants for their tusks which contain ivory. I believe that elephants should not be
poached for the ivory that their tusks contain. The elephant population has decreased tremendously,
and in 1997, only about 600,000 elephants were left. Poachers are killing about 35,000 elephants
every year, and this should stop right away. Elephants are on the verge of becoming extinct.
Knowing this, some of you might be sad, while others might think that this has no effect on you
personally. Well, as a matter of fact, if they become extinct, it might have a bigger effect on you then
you would think. Actually, "There is a stark correlation between ... Show more content on

possible, there are many organizations you could donate to that help elephants. They are wonderful
creatures, and the species deserves to live a long life on this planet.

Elephant Poaching In The 1800s
Chelsea Taylor Professor Guneyli English 101 31 October 2016 Elephant Poaching Wildlife hunting
is a big business a 2013 estimate valued the illegal poaching trade in Africa worth 17 billion dollars

similarities they also have a wide variety of differences. Elephant poaching in 1800's–1999 was
done to meet the worldwide demands, but elephant poaching in 2000's and above was done for
sport. Elephant poaching is wrong and shouldn't be done. Elephant poaching better or worse we can

The people responsible for killing the elephants throughout the time period of 1800's –1999 is all
local hunters and big game hunters. Roberts seen a group of boys torturing an innocent baby
elephant who he then took back to his plane and tried to nurse it back to health but alas the baby
elephant died after being Robert's care for ten days ( Hammer, Joshua.). A group of boys from some
village seen that a little elephant was wandering out alone so they decided to mess with the little guy
well when roberts seen this he decided that that wasn't going work for him at all and decided to
rescue the innocent baby elephant. Some of the elephants that get poached are in retaliation because
they were getting all over a farmer's crops so the farmer took it upon himself to kill the elephant that
didn't know any different not to go in that area.( The reason the elephants don't know any different is
because their land that they onced roamed freely just started being taken over by the human
population. Now we are going to talk about the people responsible for killing elephants from the
time period of 2000's and above. Most of the human hunters nowadays have heavy machinery that
can take down elephants like ak 47's and other machinery such as that. With their big guns elephants
don't really stand a chance against human hunters. They also use a gps/sonar mapping to see where
the elephants are located. Then they go and kill them and that is also how they find them so easily in
big hordes as they do. In conclusion you can see that as the years went on the worse animal
poaching got it started out horrible then slowly it went to extremely

Reproduction of Female Elephants
Basic anatomy and physiology, artificial insemination, parturition, and social aspects of
reproduction
Introduction
The study and research of reproduction in elephants is increasingly critical in consideration of the
quickly dwindling population numbers and estimates. The current Asian elephant population is
estimated to lie between 50,000–70,000 across the world, with 15,000 of these individuals in
captivity. African elephant population numbers are low as well after serious culling through hunting
and poaching. These numbers make the low reproduction rates a great concern as elephants do not
currently sufficiently reproduce at an adequate rate to sustain population size.12

The first pregnancy that resulted from AI was accounted for in 1998 using fresh semen and was
done by detecting a slight rise in progesterone prior to ovulation, indicating proper timing for
insemination.9, 14 Now ultrasonagraphy can also be used to detect imminent ovulation as follicular
development is easily followed, as well as detect the timing of ovulation.14
It is common for the semen of 2–3 bulls to be used to ensure at least one quality sample to produce a
pregnancy. In the instance that multiple donors are used, parentage is confirmed via DNA analysis.
Most frequently, nonsurgical insemination is performed. This method calls for a trained and
accommodating elephant as a large bore cannula is inserted into the lower urogenital tract. A 3m
endoscope is inserted through the cannula and conducted to the hymen in first time mothers and the
cervix or uterine horn of a cow that has calved. A small insemination cannula is used to deposit
semen into the vagina, threaded through the hymen in nulliparous cows. In parous cows the semen
may be deposited further into the uterus.14 Surgical insemination

Asian Elephants : Asian Elephants Are A Big Mammal
Asian elephants are a big mammal, let me tell you more about them and what makes them different
from the other elephants. Asian elephants live in Nepal, India and Southeast Asia scrub forests and
rainforests. Asian elephants have been around for over 55 million years elephants are very
successful animals they found many different fossils and they have said over 300 species have
walked the earth over a long period. Elephants eat roots, grasses, fruit, and bark. An adult elephant
can consume up to 300 pounds of food in a single day. Elephants form deep family bonds and live in
tight matriarchal family groups of related females called a herd. When a calf is born, it is raised and
protected by the whole matriarchal herd. Female elephants live in a herd. Male elephants have very
different social needs, males are driven out of the family group as they approach sexual maturity,
males spend as much as 95% of their lives alone. When it comes to babies getting attacked by
predators, the whole herd pitches in.
After five years of rearing the young elephants, the mother gives birth to a new infant weaning the
now adolescent calf at the same time. The subspecies of the elephants are African and Asian. In
Africa there is two different species, the African bush elephant, and the African forest elephant. In
Asia they just have the Asian elephant. In the early times of 2000 b.c. elephants because of the size
they were they helped build. Many experts believe that the mammoth which is now

Elephant Poaching
"We are experiencing what is likely to be the greatest percentage loss of elephants in history," said
Richard G. Ruggiero, an official with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (Ney York Times;
December 3, 2012). The poaching of elephants started in the late 1800's and is still happening today.
People are slaughtering these majestic animals for their ivory tusks. Ivory has been sold on the black
market for millions of dollars. Before the start of ivory poaching there were millions of elephants in
the world in both Africa and India, but today because of the hunting for ivory, there are barely any
of these giants left in the wild. Throughout history Europeans have been moving in on central
African states to make ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"It is a tragedy beyond reckoning and humanity needs to pay attention to the plight of the elephants
before it is too late" said Cyril Christo (CNN; February3, 2013). This world–wide known tragedy
has probed other countries to donate money, campaign, and educate to create an avenue for the
awareness of Save the Elephants (www.savetheelephants.org).
There are organizations around the globe designed to stop elephant poaching. Their intent is to sway
people's opinions to help with the world–wide problem. Only a global ban on the sale of ivory
would take the heat off of these massive creatures. Solutions might include, addressing the
involvement of international criminal institutes by means of strong law enforcement at both national
and international levels along the full extent of the supply. Closing down domestic (national)
markets in ivory, would also be beneficial. Countries could embrace the trade ban, and educate
consumers in order to stem the demand for ivory (Bloody Ivory; January 11, 2013).
Just imagine life without any elephants, wiped out just like the dinosaurs. In the early 1980's, there
were more than a million reported elephants in Africa. Tragically, during that decade, 600,000
elephants were destroyed for ivory products. Today, conceivably no more than 400,000 elephants
remain across the continent. Elephants are facing a very real threat of extinction; In fact, the African
elephants are listed on the

Elephant Behavior
Asian elephants are large and gray. They inhabit tropical forests. They can camouflage their gray
color in shady areas to conceal themselves against predators. These elephants have long trunks,
allowing them to reach the ground, squirt water over their backs or into their mouths, and blow dirt
onto their backs during dust baths. Male elephants often have visible tusks whereas females, such as
those in northeast India, do not. Surprisingly, elephants have large padded feet that enable them to
walk with minimal noise. Large, flappable ears help them cool off. however, they will overheat if
they cannot get to a shaded area during the hottest part of the day.
Scientists are able to study elephant behavior using their trails. This includes female interactions,
cow and calf relationships, bull ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The majority of the species take a part in activities such as complex communication, teaching,
greeting ceremonies, courtship, and communal care. Females often have very close relationships
with other females. The majority of them stay together their entire lives and care for each other.
Asian elephants have also been known to stay behind with a sick or injured herd mate. This is a trait
many humans admire and strive to resemble.
Lack of mating and deforestation have caused a major decline of these beautiful creatures. In 1900,
an estimated 100,000 Asian elephants existed. Now, over half of the population has been lost.
Scientists predict they will become extinct by 2025. That is less than ten years away.
Before industrialization, Asian elephants roamed most of Asia. Due to deforestation and the loss of
their supplies for human use, only 15% of that space is still available to them. Elephants from
different regions are restricted to different areas. For example, the Indian elephant has a larger
amount of land to roam than the Sri Lankan. Sumatran elephants have lost 70% of their habitat due
to human

African Elephant Poaching
African elephants are the largest animals on the planet. They are native to 37 African countries.
There are two species of African elephants–the Forest elephant and the Savanna elephant. These
majestic creatures are rapidly declining in numbers due to illegal poaching. The ivory trade has
made African elephants an endangered species.
The NPR reports that a three–year study, called the Great Elephant Census, shows that the numbers
of Savanna elephants has dropped by 30 percent from 2007 to 2014. In just seven–years the number
of Savannah elephants has dropped by an astounding 144,000 animals.

According to National Geographic the yearly loss of elephants to poaching is estimated to be 8
percent. An estimated 27,000 elephants are slaughtered for their ivory year after year.
The slaughter of the African elephant by poachers fuels the profitable black market for ivory. The
black market endangers not only the elephant, but the livelihoods of local communities too. It also
undermines both national and regional security as well as finances several criminal organizations.
There is a growing global fight to preserve elephant numbers that includes China and the United
States. Both countries have high hopes that other governments will join them in the battle to save the
majestic African elephant.

Convention on International Trade on Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. The meeting

Elephant Culling Research Paper
Despite a ban on the international trade in ivory, African elephants are still being poached in large
numbers. Tens of thousands if elephants are being killed every year for their ivory tusks. The ivory
is often carved into ornaments and jewellery – China is the biggest consumer market for such
products. Its natural when a human hears the question what's worth more the elephant of its tusk?
For them to answer from the heart: Of course, the elephant.
Though there is no real answer it depends on whose side you believe in either from tradition, beliefs
or the environment you grew up in. Calculations found that an elephant contributes $1,607,624.83 to
travel companies, airlines and local economies, thanks to tourists who will pay for a glimpse of one.
Meanwhile, an elephant killed for his ivory is worth about $21,000 – money that often funds
criminal groups, corrupt officials and even terrorist groups. Almost anyone can "start a criminal
organization. All it takes is willpower and the ability to ride herd over desperate, insecure and
dangerous people. You can't stop powerful organizations who are funded from elephant culling.
Though you can stop the weak, beginners in the criminal underworld. Reducing the illegal funding
to criminal organizations.
Killing of other wildlife is also increasingly relevant. Last fall, the U. K's Department for
Environment, Food and Rural Affairs targeted badgers for culling–the selective killing of a species
as a population control measure.

Elephant Evolution
My topic that I have is how the elephant has changed over time. A lot of us, either students or not,
know about natural selection. But, there are also people who don't know about natural selection or
how some animals may have evolved over time. Well, you may think that the elephant may be
related to a wooly mammoth, right? Well, they actually do share an ancestor. We don't know when
or how they were torn apart in the past.
In the scientific classifications the elephant is known as Animalia in the kingdom. For the phylum
they're known as Chordata, subphylum as Vertebrata, class as Mammalia, superorder as Afrotheria,
order as Proboscidea, and family as Elephantidae (Wikipedia, 2017).
Something that we do know is that the African elephant and the woolly mammoth share about
95.5% of their mitochondrial DNA. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It's about the same size of a modern Asian elephant, but it's clear that the North American Mastodon
ate high growing vegetation instead of grazing. Both the modern elephants and the woolly
mammoths are/were considered to be grazers. The North American Mastodon graze on high
growing vegetation. (Madden, 2007) Other animals that weren't mentioned above that are thought to
be related to the elephants today are the manatees, dugongs, and hyraxes (MacKenzie, 2001).
Elephants are part of an order that is called Proboscidea which are animals with trunks. The earliest
members are called Moeritheres. They lived in Africa about 55–60 million years ago and were like
the size of a pig. It is said that the Asian elephant, African elephant, and the mammoth all came from
Africa (MacKenzie, 2001). But, out of the Asian elephant, African elephant, and the mammoth the
African elephant stayed and evolved in Africa. 5,000 years ago the mammoth became extinct and

Carolina Elephant Tokens
Elephant tokens, with their exotic type, have never ceased to fascinate researchers in Early
American coins. This article will bring to the attention of researchers an overlooked source that may
hold the key to the origin of the Carolina elephant tokens, and to discuss a possible explanation for
their existence.
We will begin with a review of the previous research and highlight the findings of particular
importance. Hyman Montagu seems to have been the first to record that the London elephant tokens
– according to him, both the "GOD PRESERVE LONDON" and the "LONDON" types – appear
overstruck on copper halfpence of Charles II. In U.S. auction catalogs, the first appearance of an

Newman also discussed the different dies in the series. Hodder, when cataloging the Norweb
Collection, identified the dies and assigned them a numbering system. The London and Carolina and
New England reverses are die linked among each other, as are the two obverse dies. Hodder also
noted the variation in the preparation of the planchets. Out of the eleven coins in the Norweb
collection, Hodder identified four as struck on planchets cut from rolled strip, and five as struck on
cast planchets.
Breen, following up on Crosby's observation, noted that there were multiple weight standards. This
article can confirm that there were two weight standards. The weights of 72 different coins were
collected and analyzed in a frequency table. The result is two peaks: one that corresponds to a light
standard of about 143 grains (49 to the pound), and a second to a heavy standard of about 234 grains
(30 to the pound). Breen stated that the coins were struck at five different weight standards: 30, 40,
46, 52 and 60 to the pound; but the evidence currently available does not support this assertion.

Elephant Abuse
The abiotic factors that have been considered for the elephant enclosure are the size of the paddocks,
shade and shelters in the paddocks, potential areas for sleeping, and safe entrances for the elephant
keepers.
In this enclosure, altogether there will be three female elephants and two male elephants. There will
be two paddocks, and each gender will have their own designated paddock, however all elephants
are free to roam around. (http://www.elephants.com/females.php) Within each paddock will be one
large swimming pool. These will be used for drinking out of, and swimming in. Elephants drink up
to 40 gallons of water per day, so there will need to be roughly 200 gallons minimum of drinking
water available each day. In addition, there will be one indoor barn situated between both paddocks
for all elephants to freely occupy. In line with the Association of Zoo and Aquarium (AZA)

This is because all elephants need plenty of space to roam around. They are made for inhabiting
very large spaces. They spend 80% of their day walking around and foraging for food. Therefore, a
built enclosure must be suitably large to tend to these needs.
(http://www.elephantsincanada.com/animal–welfare) In addition, elephants enjoy swimming and
playing with mud. Because of this, the enclosure will require mud wallows, and deep water moats.
They will also need shade structures,

Elephant Poaching In Africa
The article I chose to read talked about a new strategy to track elephant poaching in Africa. The
mass killings have become so frequent in the past years that only 40,000 of the African elephant
population is left. Furthermore, the high demands for elephant ivory are doing little to help.
Researchers believe that by using DNA from the tusks of previously poached elephants, they can pin
point exactly where the illicit acts are happening. According to the new study, most of the killing
sprees occurred around the central and southeastern parts of Africa. Even people who were aware of

What Is Elephant Poaching?
Africa's elephant population suffers 25 year decline as more poachers kill for their ivory tusks.
(Durando) The African Wildlife Foundation (AWF), has been an organization for over 61 years
concerning the protection of native African animals. Elephant poaching has become a more
increasing issue over the past years. Hunting is used for control of population, but poaching can
threaten the African elephants, and could cause the species to need to be protected. Many
organizations have been made to benefit the elephants with protective measures. The AWF is there
to ensure that through projects and activities, they can aid the species in need. "Another highly
successful AWF program is the Elephant Awareness Campaign. Its slogan, 'only elephants ... Show

"Governments in Africa vary in their ability to control poaching, and conflict certainly does not
help" (Plumer) The government has not supported the acts or helped to take protective
measurements for the wildlife of Africa. This is causing more poaching and a dying loss of a species
that is being harmed severely by not taking control over this spiraling situation. "'If wildlife could
talk, it would take humans to court,' said Nyokabi Gitahi, an AWF lawyer" (Africa News Service)
As of 2005, the AWF has decided to save a habitat for wildlife in African country known for its
elephants and other large wildlife. This means, since then, they have tried to help with the
conservation of the elephants and other animals in the area of Africa. "Grant agreements have been
written with 6 African governments (Burkina Faso, Ghana, Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania and
Zambia) and 21 non–governmental organizations," (Phillips) According to the article, in reference to
1998, there were many countries and organizations all for the help of elephant conservation. The
protection and support from all these governments and organizations will ultimately help the
population of the elephants strive and become a populated species again. Congress passed in 1988,
an elephant protection grant that suports, "(1) a review of African elephant conservation programs in
each range country and a moratorium on the importation of ivory from any country that fails to
maintain an adequate elephant conservation program, and (2) a grant program to support research,
conservation, management, and protection of African elephants." (Phillips) The United States
supported this grant by monitoring ivory imports, but other countries cannot fully commit because
they can only control the internal trade, but not the international

The world is gone all people have been wiped the animals not to be seen.In the darkness arrives , but

loudness of them Elephants. The mighty majestic of these beasts grazing in the sunlight of the

distress. All in all it is such a beautiful day.
The night falls quietly not a sound to be heard but the sound of the elephants and there loud
snoring. As the nights get quieter you hear the loud rustling and fast walking or is it is somebody
walking through the trees or running perhaps.Next minute he swoops out onto the great plain and

sleeping elephants secretly and quietly to make sure not to wake them from their sleep. As the
mysterious persons walks through the Elephants he mistakenly steps on one of the Elephants

Sadly he was out of time the elephant awoke with a yell and woke the other Elephants up and that

A List Of African Elephants
African Elephants
African elephants, the largest animal walking on Earth, are endangered. Elephants are important
because they help keep some living things alive and keep habitats suitable for other animals. They
are a very important part of society.
The African elephant is the largest animal walking on earth today, weighing in at the most, six tons.
At birth they weigh about 200 pounds. African elephants have large ears that they use to hear and to
radiate heat. When they radiate heat they let the excess heat off their body to stay cool. Another
feature of a elephant, is their trunk. They use their trunk to communicate, and to handle objects such
as food. They also use their trunk to dig for their food in the dirt. The trunk is a very important

moves back and forth when they chew.
Both sexes of elephant have two tusks, these are known as incisor teeth. Male tusks are well seen as
they are long whereas female tusks are small and tucked inside a pocket in the jaw so have no use.
Male tusks are used for fighting with another bull over the right to mate with another female and to

Digestive System:
Elephants are hindgut fermenters due to the surrounding foods which they consume being high in

Observation Of Wild African Elephants
Wild African elephants may break sleep records for mammals. New data show that they seem to get
by just fine on about two hours of shut–eye a night. Much of that snoozing took place while they
were standing up. The animals lie down to sleep only once every three to four nights. Trying to
figure out how much wild elephants sleep just by watching them 24 hours a day is tricky, especially
in the dark. Much of what scientists had known about sleeping elephants came from animals living
in captivity, notes Paul Manger. He is a neuroscientist, or brain researcher, at the University of the
Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. In zoos and enclosures, elephants have been recorded
snoozing from about three hours to nearly seven during a 24–hour period. Using electronic monitors

The new data seem to now confirm they were right. Manger and his team shared their findings
March 1 in PLOS ONE. What they learned Manger and his colleagues implanted activity monitors
(similar to Fitbit trackers) in the trunks of two elephants. Both were matriarchs (female leaders) of
their herds in the Chobe National Park. It lies in northern Botswana, a nation in southern Africa. The
trunk on these animals is "250 pounds of muscle," Manger says. That's why, he says, these moms
would hardly have noticed the small tracker implants. Trunks, like human hands, are important for
exploring the world. Elephants rarely keep them still – unless sleeping. The researchers assumed
that a trunk monitor that didn't move for at least five minutes likely meant its host was asleep. Neck
collars helped researchers figure out whether animals were standing up or lying down. The
electronic devices tracked the animals over about a month. During that time, the elephants averaged
just two hours of sleep a day. What's more, the elephants were able to skip a night's sleep without
needing extra naps the next

Understanding Elephant Poaching
The Elephants
Did you know that that 35,000 elephants are dying each year? We are poaching them, usually for a
price. Poaching is different from hunting. Hunting is when you kill for sport, and it's completely
legal. You still need a permit. Poaching is when you kill an animal without a permit. Sadly, 30
elephants are lost a day in Tanzania. Imagine if that was you and your herd was getting killed with
no end in sight. We need to take some responsibility, because I would want to be killed just because
a poacher had a permit. In order to understand elephant poaching you need to know why they're
being poached, the perspectives of the poachers, and the organisations, how they're becoming
extinct, what we can do to help and what is being done to help. Elephants are being poached for
their ivory. Countries around the world are increasing ivory buying. This is because more elephants

he elephants who can distinguish threats from humans and bees
There are many intelligent animals in the world, but an African elephant in North Kenya is probably
way smarter than you can probably imagine. A recent study aimed at finding out whether the alarm
calls by the African elephants, co–existing with the local Samburu people, can distinguish between
threats from humans and bees.
Mammalian vocal calls refer to external objects present in the environment and indicate a potential
threat through them. Moreover, these calls vary significantly in the presence of different classes of
predators. These vocal calls produced in response to specific events can then be picked up by other
listeners usually of the same species and action is taken accordingly.
Due to their large size and strength, these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The calls by these African elephants can function as signals. The exposure to Samburu and bee
sounds triggered flight and vigilance behaviour. The alarm calls for Samburu tribesmen and bees
were acoustically distinctive. Headshaking behaviour was observed only in response to bee sounds
and not when exposed to voices of Samburu tribesmen.
The results of the study provide a pretty conclusive evidence for a cognitive behaviour in these
African elephants. The sample size was appropriate. State of the art tools, technology were used
while conducting the experiment.
This helps us understand that some members of the animal kingdom exhibit cognitive behaviour and
can differentiate between various types of threats and also reflect urgency level of threats. It can also
help us understand the predator– prey cycles in a better context and understand the functioning of a
particular ecosystem.
Future research can focus on finding other animals that possess such brilliant apprehension. Who

Animal Vs Asian Elephants
Asian elephants are a big mammal but let me tell you more about them and what makes them
different from the other elephants. Asian elephants live in Nepal, India and Southeast Asia scrub
forests and rainforests. Asian elephants have been around for over 55 million years elephants are
very successful animals they found many different fossils and they have said over 300 species have
walked the earth over a long period.
In
Africa there is two different species the African bush elephant, and the African forest elephant. In
Asia they just have the Asian elephant. In the early times of 2000 b.c. elephants because of the size

The genus is Loxodonta.
The species is africana.
The kingdom is Animalia.
The phylum is Chordata.

The order is Proboscidea.
The family is Elephantidea.
The life–cycle for the African elephant is very particular. Mating and gestation is very particular for
African Elephants. African Elephants do not have a specific breeding season, although research has
proven that there are more births during times of heavy rainfall. A Females estrus cycle lasts about
thirteen to sixteen weeks, ovulation lasts around four days. Male elephants also called bulls, look for
female mates when they have entered musth "a period of intense aggressiveness and sexual drive."
For each male it is different when they come into musth at a specific time every year, it usually lasts
about six to twelve weeks. After a gestation period of 22 months females give birth to a single calf.
On average female elephants give birth to one calf every four to nine years. Elephants calves can
weigh 265 pounds on average at birth. Within the hour they are born calves are able to walk, see,
and smell. Within a couple hours calves begin to suckle, from then on for their first three months

The African Elephant : Animals And Elephants
The African elephant is the largest living land mammal and one of the most impressive animals on
Earth. The elephant trunk serves as a nose, hand, extra foot, helps gather food, siphoning water,
dusting, and digging. The trunk can reach up to 23ft. The elephant habitat is dense forest to open
planes. Elephants are herbivore. An elephant's lifespan is 60 to 70 years. A elephants predator is a
human.
Buffalo
Buffalo are extremely large animals. Buffalo stand approximately 65 inches at the shoulder and
weigh up to 1760 (males) 1650 (female). The front hooves are larger than the hind because of how
much the buffalo weighs. Both male and female carries horns. The habitat of a buffalo s dense forest

predator of a buffalo are humans, lions, and crocodiles.
Lion
Lions are the second largest animal in the feline family. Lions stand about 48 inches at the shoulder.
Lions weigh about 416 pounds (male) and 277 pounds (female). A lion's habitat is savannahs,
grasslands, and woodland. Lions are carnivores. A lion predator is a human.
Rhino
The rhinoceros is a large primitive looking mammal that dates from the Miocene era from millions
of years ago. Rhinos stand about 60 inches at the shoulder. A rhino weighs about 1 to ½ tons (black

Elephant In Shooting An Elephant
A Life Taken, and a Life Saved Sometimes shooting a defenseless animal in certain scenarios could
be ethical. Although maybe not advantageous for both parties involved the decision must have been
be made. In George Orwell's story "Shooting an Elephant" he is faced with a moral dilemma to
either shoot a grazing animal that has destroyed a village, and killed a person. Or, to leave it be until
it can be contained, by either animal control or the owner. When the life of an animal is taken, it
must be considered that the opportunity for human safety, could be at risk as well. The animal's
welfare is at stake also; but, when the animal puts human lives at risk, it needs to be stopped. That is
why the decision to shoot an elephant in the short story ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

It is hard to create and provide hard evidence to support this ideal when there is not a linguistic way

Breed and Moore's definition: "Cognition is the ability of an animal to separate itself from the
moment in which it is living and to contemplate the past, predict the future, and act accordingly"
(2016). Cognition experiments on elephants did not begin until the late 1950's, starting with
Rensch's study on memory. Since than scientist's have tested/ studied problem solving, rituals,
emotions, deception, casual reasoning, tool making, and tool use within elephants with many having
positive results (Plotnik et al., 2010). One aspect of cognition that has been tested in many primates
in the recent years is the mirror self–recognition test; this is considered the basic level of cognition.
Plotnik and colleagues completed this test with three female elephants at the Bronx Zoo (2010). This
test involves three stages, where each shows a level of recognition. Though none of the elephants
passed the mark part of the test, they showed many other characteristics that indicated self–
recognition (that was in other species like chimpanzees and bottle nose dolphins). However, the
discrepancy could be due to the way elephants identify one another: through touch, sounds, and
smell, which a mirror cannot replicate (Plotnik et

the Sahara Desert. The African elephant known as Loxodonta Africana was placed on the

The complexity surrounding conservation is a theme that I found both important and compelling.
This topic came up during the "Class within a Class" on the Illegal Wildlife Trade. One of the
readings assigned was a New York Times article about elephant poaching. After working at a charity
focusing on wildlife preservation in Africa last summer, I had become passionate about elephant
conservation. I had learned about the rapid decline of elephants along with the threat of poaching

complicated than I had previously appreciated. For example, I was unaware of the complex
geopolitical elements of the issue: the ivory demands of middle–class China, the ... Show more

The severity of these political and economic factors often impacts the success of a given
convention's outcomes. We surveyed a variety of conservation treaties, from the Convention on
International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) to the Convention on Biological Diversity
(CBD) to the Agreement on the Conservation of Populations of European Bats (EUROBATS). Some
of these, such as EUROBATS, were more successful, with a smaller group of countries being able to
work in close cooperation through this treaty. Most European countries are relatively politically and
economically stable and have a network of NGOs that can assist in conservation efforts. This
contributed heavily to the success of EUROBATS. Conversely, CITES is an agreement that spans
the globe, requiring the needs and interests of the global North and South be taken into account. As
seen with the elephant poaching case study, some countries lack the ability to enforce the rules of
CITES, even if they are a party to the convention. Without the cooperation of these countries, the
impact of CITES on wildlife conservation has been weakened. The complexity surrounding
conservation highlights the difficulties in creating an effective conservation regime for a given
species and the problems in designing a treaty acceptable to all global States. Yet it also stands as a
reminder of the necessity of global cooperation for solving trans–boundary environmental
problems–an overarching theme of this course that is applicable to almost every issue we

up objects and food. Elephants can also show their mood through their trunk. They are able to fend
off other elephants of can use the trunk as a punching or thrusting weapon. Also, the tip of the trunk
is different on both species. The African elephant has two "fingers" on the end and Asian elephants
have one "finger" on the end of the trunk. However this does not make the Asian elephant any less
skillful, but most of the time they approach many things differently. Elephants have a huge appetite
that consist of many different plants and types

Elephant Poaching In Africa

  • 1. Elephant Poaching In Africa and the populations of elephants began to recover; CITES also secured an agreement to ban the international trade in ivory. Since January 1990, the international trade of ivory has been illegal; nevertheless, poaching is still greatly present in African countries (Rochon, 2013). Supporting Argument #1: To the millions of people who live around the world, elephants may not mean anything special. To the African population and wildlife, however, elephants are a very necessary part of their lives. It is extremely devastating to the individuals and animals who live in Africa that thousands of elephants are being killed each year solely for their tusks. One can argue that the poaching of elephants for ivory is a rather selfish act. As of late, ivory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Based on the expensive price of ivory, it is understood that it is a luxury item. Ivory is used for a large variety of things, ranging from chopsticks and hair pins to billiard balls and piano keys. Why is it, though, that these items cannot be made from other materials? Stated in an article titled "What Is It About an Elephant's Tusks That Makes Them So Valuable?", the author says, "Today we make them (items) out of plastic, but for thousands of years, ivory was among the best, if not the very best, option –– the plastic of the pre–20th–century world" (Rosen, 2012). If manufacturers switched from using ivory to using plastic to produce given items, the amount of deaths among elephants could possibly decrease greatly. Due to individual's selfish tendencies and desire for high–quality product, nearly 50,000 elephants are killed each year (Worland, Obama Announces Major Restrictions on Ivory Trade, 2015). This endangered species is extremely valuable to the African continent as elephants play a large role in the continent's landscape. • 3. Elephant Persuasive Essay Miscommunication is the source of the worlds major problems. Change can only occur after both parties have an open conversation. If one party is unable to advocate for themselves, they're placed in extreme danger. You wouldn't utilize manipulation to jeopardize a baby's life. The same logic should apply to Elephants. Babies are unable to communicate with words. This weakness makes them extremely vulnerable. Thankfully billions of dollars have been spent to raise awareness. The vital cash flow has helped establish a positive baby equality mindset. Investing a similar amount of money in pro humanity causes; would keep the Elephant species alive. Humans have the ability to advocate for equality. Elephants can't communicate with humans. If this budget plan was implemented. Animals are supposed to be treated with respect. Examples of disrespect include entertainment such as Sea World and circuses. But instead of living harmoniously with them. Humans have tampered with their way of life. The deadly combination of habitat destruction and poaching has eliminated numerous species. Both parties are aware of the aftermath. However only one party is capable of making a change. Time is running out and it dosn't look good. If a change dosn't occur soon, the few remaining wild Elephants will become extinct. Technology is the worlds most powerful advocacy tool. When humans use it to raise national awareness. • 5. Elephant Stereotypes The main topic of both the reading and the lecture is about elephant behaviors. The reading proposes three beliefs about elephants' behaviors; the lecture, however, finds these assumptions questionable, citing three reasons to repudiates what is mentioned in the passage. First, the passage claims that elephants have awareness about their death time. It stands to reason that old elephants leave their herds to live lonely along sites near water. In addition, a large number of elderly elephants found in sites around water illustrates this claims. Nevertheless, the lecture rejects this idea, highlighting the fact that when elephants become old, they lose their ability to shew hard materials. For this reason, they leave their herd to seek soft vegetables to eat, and because soft materials are often found near water, they choose sites which are near water to live. That is why a large number of elephant bones have been found in such places. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On the other hand, the lecturer refutes this assumption, pointing out that because of the specific structure of elephant's ears, they can be trained to move paintbrush in a specific pattern based on what trainer teach to them. • 7. The Elephant, Ivory And Trade For many years, the population of mammals has been declining. One mammal in particular that caught my eye was the elephant. The elephant population has been decreasing significantly. One elephant species in exact has suffered more than others, which is the African elephant. In Gao and Clark's words "African elephants (Loxodonta africana) are in great danger" (Gao & Clark, 23). This essay will review the factors that triggers humans to kill African elephants and the main cause humans are killing African elephant's for. Although, humans might have valid reasons as to why they kill innocent elephants, the killing of mammals doesn't service the circumstance that the planet is losing that specific specie, which is something that it 's hard to ... According to Barnes, human densities were low until the16th century, right before iron tools were seen (Barnes, 179). These tools helped farmer clear their way in the forests, making it easier for them to farm (Barnes, 179). After the ivory demand from the Roman's, the Chinese started doing the same thing, demanding for ivory which is still currently growing (Barnes, 178, Gao & Clark, 23). In more recent years, the ivory used has expanded in China (Gao & Clark, 24). The most common way ivory is used in China is for carving as a traditional art (Gao & Clark, 24). Ivory carving wasn't well–known in the Chinese culture until later in the 1950's, when ivory factories started establishing (Gao &Clark, 24). Afterwards, ivory carving became a major foreign–currency–generating industry in cities around China (Gao & Clark, 24). The industries failed a little after the Cultural Revolution that occurred in the years between 1966 and 1976 (Gao & Clark, 24). Ivory is used in many things but the most common way the Chinese culture uses it is by the following: figuring, ornaments, scholar's articles, and vessels (Gao & Clark, 24). As ivory started to get popular in the Chinese culture, new stores started selling ivory. In around 1936, there has been calculated around 126 ivory facilities in "Da Xin" (Gao & Clark, 24). • 9. Paper On African Elephant My interest in the white rhino started about three years ago when I was doing a research paper about the African elephant. I came across the white rhino as I was searching for the fellow species that were being threatened by hunters in Africa. I never really paid much attention to large wild animals before because of the fact that they are large and I figured that they wouldn't be threatened like most smaller animals. One threat this wild rhino is facing is habitat loss due to agriculture and settlements. Another threat is poachers who are interested in their horns to sell mainly across the East. Although these threats are putting white rhinos at risk, through the efforts of groups such as the Wild Foundation and World Wild Life, the prognosis for the continued survival of the white rhino is good. ... • 11. Persuasive Essay On Elephant Many people aren't aware of how many elephants are killed each year by poachers. These poachers want to kill elephants for their tusks which contain ivory. I believe that elephants should not be poached for the ivory that their tusks contain. The elephant population has decreased tremendously, and in 1997, only about 600,000 elephants were left. Poachers are killing about 35,000 elephants every year, and this should stop right away. Elephants are on the verge of becoming extinct. Knowing this, some of you might be sad, while others might think that this has no effect on you personally. Well, as a matter of fact, if they become extinct, it might have a bigger effect on you then you would think. Actually, "There is a stark correlation between ... Elephant Poaching In The 1800s Chelsea Taylor Professor Guneyli English 101 31 October 2016 Elephant Poaching Wildlife hunting is a big business a 2013 estimate valued the illegal poaching trade in Africa worth 17 billion dollars a year and growing. While elephant poaching between 1800's – 1999 and 2000's and up have some similarities they also have a wide variety of differences. Elephant poaching in 1800's–1999 was done to meet the worldwide demands, but elephant poaching in 2000's and above was done for sport. Elephant poaching is wrong and shouldn't be done. Most of the human hunters nowadays have heavy machinery that can take down elephants like ak 47's and other machinery such as that. Elephant Reproduction Reproduction of Female Elephants Basic anatomy and physiology, artificial insemination, parturition, and social aspects of reproduction Introduction The study and research of reproduction in elephants is increasingly critical in consideration of the quickly dwindling population numbers and estimates. The current Asian elephant population is estimated to lie between 50,000–70,000 across the world, with 15,000 of these individuals in captivity. African elephant population numbers are low as well after serious culling through hunting and poaching. • 19. Elephant Poaching Essay Elephant Poaching "We are experiencing what is likely to be the greatest percentage loss of elephants in history," said Richard G. Ruggiero, an official with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (Ney York Times; December 3, 2012). The poaching of elephants started in the late 1800's and is still happening today. People are slaughtering these majestic animals for their ivory tusks. Ivory has been sold on the black market for millions of dollars. Before the start of ivory poaching there were millions of elephants in the world in both Africa and India, but today because of the hunting for ivory, there are barely any of these giants left in the wild. "It is a tragedy beyond reckoning and humanity needs to pay attention to the plight of the elephants before it is too late" said Cyril Christo (CNN; February3, 2013). This world–wide known tragedy has probed other countries to donate money, campaign, and educate to create an avenue for the awareness of Save the Elephants (www.savetheelephants.org). There are organizations around the globe designed to stop elephant poaching. Their intent is to sway people's opinions to help with the world–wide problem. Only a global ban on the sale of ivory would take the heat off of these massive creatures. Solutions might include, addressing the involvement of international criminal institutes by means of strong law enforcement at both national and international levels along the full extent of the supply. Closing down domestic (national) markets in ivory, would also be beneficial. Countries could embrace the trade ban, and educate consumers in order to stem the demand for ivory (Bloody Ivory; January 11, 2013). Just imagine life without any elephants, wiped out just like the dinosaurs. In the early 1980's, there were more than a million reported elephants in Africa. Tragically, during that decade, 600,000 elephants were destroyed for ivory products. Today, conceivably no more than 400,000 elephants remain across the continent. • 21. Elephant Behavior Asian elephants are large and gray. They inhabit tropical forests. They can camouflage their gray color in shady areas to conceal themselves against predators. These elephants have long trunks, allowing them to reach the ground, squirt water over their backs or into their mouths, and blow dirt onto their backs during dust baths. Male elephants often have visible tusks whereas females, such as those in northeast India, do not. Surprisingly, elephants have large padded feet that enable them to walk with minimal noise. Large, flappable ears help them cool off. however, they will overheat if they cannot get to a shaded area during the hottest part of the day. The majority of the species take a part in activities such as complex communication, teaching, greeting ceremonies, courtship, and communal care. Females often have very close relationships with other females. The majority of them stay together their entire lives and care for each other. Asian elephants have also been known to stay behind with a sick or injured herd mate. This is a trait many humans admire and strive to resemble. Lack of mating and deforestation have caused a major decline of these beautiful creatures. In 1900, an estimated 100,000 Asian elephants existed. Now, over half of the population has been lost. Scientists predict they will become extinct by 2025. That is less than ten years away. Before industrialization, Asian elephants roamed most of Asia. Due to deforestation and the loss of their supplies for human use, only 15% of that space is still available to them. Elephants from different regions are restricted to different areas. Tens of thousands if elephants are being killed every year for their ivory tusks. The ivory is often carved into ornaments and jewellery – China is the biggest consumer market for such products. Its natural when a human hears the question what's worth more the elephant of its tusk? For them to answer from the heart: Of course, the elephant. Though there is no real answer it depends on whose side you believe in either from tradition, beliefs or the environment you grew up in. Calculations found that an elephant contributes $1,607,624.83 to travel companies, airlines and local economies, thanks to tourists who will pay for a glimpse of one. Meanwhile, an elephant killed for his ivory is worth about $21,000 – money that often funds criminal groups, corrupt officials and even terrorist groups. Almost anyone can "start a criminal organization. All it takes is willpower and the ability to ride herd over desperate, insecure and dangerous people. You can't stop powerful organizations who are funded from elephant culling. Though you can stop the weak, beginners in the criminal underworld. Reducing the illegal funding to criminal organizations. • 27. Elephant Evolution My topic that I have is how the elephant has changed over time. A lot of us, either students or not, know about natural selection. But, there are also people who don't know about natural selection or how some animals may have evolved over time. Well, you may think that the elephant may be related to a wooly mammoth, right? Well, they actually do share an ancestor. We don't know when or how they were torn apart in the past. In the scientific classifications the elephant is known as Animalia in the kingdom. For the phylum they're known as Chordata, subphylum as Vertebrata, class as Mammalia, superorder as Afrotheria, order as Proboscidea, and family as Elephantidae (Wikipedia, 2017). Out of the eleven coins in the Norweb collection, Hodder identified four as struck on planchets cut from rolled strip, and five as struck on cast planchets. "'If wildlife could talk, it would take humans to court,' said Nyokabi Gitahi, an AWF lawyer" (Africa News Service) As of 2005, the AWF has decided to save a habitat for wildlife in African country known for its elephants and other large wildlife. The life–cycle for the African elephant is very particular. Mating and gestation is very particular for African Elephants. African Elephants do not have a specific breeding season, although research has proven that there are more births during times of heavy rainfall. A Females estrus cycle lasts about thirteen to sixteen weeks, ovulation lasts around four days. Male elephants also called bulls, look for female mates when they have entered musth "a period of intense aggressiveness and sexual drive." For each male it is different when they come into musth at a specific time every year, it usually lasts about six to twelve weeks. After a gestation period of 22 months females give birth to a single calf. On average female elephants give birth to one calf every four to nine years. Elephants calves can weigh 265 pounds on average at birth. Within the hour they are born calves are able to walk, see, and smell. Within a couple hours calves begin to suckle, from then on for their first three months they are completely ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 62. The African Elephant : Animals And Elephants The African elephant is the largest living land mammal and one of the most impressive animals on Earth. The elephant trunk serves as a nose, hand, extra foot, helps gather food, siphoning water, dusting, and digging. The trunk can reach up to 23ft. The elephant habitat is dense forest to open planes. Elephants are herbivore. An elephant's lifespan is 60 to 70 years. A elephants predator is a human. Buffalo Buffalo are extremely large animals. Buffalo stand approximately 65 inches at the shoulder and weigh up to 1760 (males) 1650 (female). The front hooves are larger than the hind because of how much the buffalo weighs. Both male and female carries horns. The habitat of a buffalo s dense forest to open plane. A buffalo is a herbivore. The life expectancy of a buffalo is 18 to 20 years. The predator of a buffalo are humans, lions, and crocodiles. Lion Lions are the second largest animal in the feline family. Lions stand about 48 inches at the shoulder. Lions weigh about 416 pounds (male) and 277 pounds (female). A lion's habitat is savannahs, grasslands, and woodland. Lions are carnivores. A lion predator is a human. • 64. Elephant In Shooting An Elephant A Life Taken, and a Life Saved Sometimes shooting a defenseless animal in certain scenarios could be ethical. Although maybe not advantageous for both parties involved the decision must have been be made. In George Orwell's story "Shooting an Elephant" he is faced with a moral dilemma to either shoot a grazing animal that has destroyed a village, and killed a person. Or, to leave it be until it can be contained, by either animal control or the owner. When the life of an animal is taken, it must be considered that the opportunity for human safety, could be at risk as well. The animal's welfare is at stake also; but, when the animal puts human lives at risk, it needs to be stopped. That is why the decision to shoot an elephant in the short story ... This owner not having safeties in place to prevent this from ever happening could be what's considered murder, if he is unable to prove he has taken necessary steps to ensure the safety of people in the surrounding area. • 66. The Observation Of Elephants What species performs burials, has the ability to cry, and form many complex relationships throughout their lives? Elephants. Since many individuals might have guessed humans or primates first, this one question shows the complexity of this species. Transition This paper tries to answer one main question: How does elephant behavior, both in captive and wild settings, provide data that can lead to evidence–based practices for building captive enclosures, daily activities, and help with conservation practices, both in captivity and in the wild. For this discussion, I am going to focus on the family, Elephantidae, as a whole. Though some might argue that the genus' Loxodonta (African) and Maximus (Asian) should be analyzed separately, I find the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is hard to create and provide hard evidence to support this ideal when there is not a linguistic way to communicate between humans and other species. For the purposes of this discussion I will use Breed and Moore's definition: "Cognition is the ability of an animal to separate itself from the moment in which it is living and to contemplate the past, predict the future, and act accordingly" (2016). Cognition experiments on elephants did not begin until the late 1950's, starting with Rensch's study on memory. Since than scientist's have tested/ studied problem solving, rituals, emotions, deception, casual reasoning, tool making, and tool use within elephants with many having positive results (Plotnik et al., 2010). One aspect of cognition that has been tested in many primates in the recent years is the mirror self–recognition test; this is considered the basic level of cognition. Plotnik and colleagues completed this test with three female elephants at the Bronx Zoo (2010). This test involves three stages, where each shows a level of recognition. Though none of the elephants passed the mark part of the test, they showed many other characteristics that indicated self– recognition (that was in other species like chimpanzees and bottle nose dolphins). However, the discrepancy could be due to the way elephants identify one another: through touch, sounds, and smell, which a mirror cannot replicate (Plotnik et ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Alexander the Great was well– known for the "most–instrumental spread of elephants as a weapon of war" (Knodell, 2014). "Elephants were the tanks of the ancient battlefield" (Knodell, 2014). The mere sight, or smell, of these beasts could cause the enemy to retreat. If the enemy did not retreat, however, the elephants would often disrupt their formation. Even cavalry horses were afraid of the smell, sight, and sounds of the oncoming elephants. The horses would refuse to proceed. • 72. Characteristics Of The African Elephant In the cultures of many Africans, the African Elephant is a figure of power and strength. Africans look at this animal and consider their size, loyalty, and spirit. Elephant tusks used in South Africa represent knowledge, strength, and control. African savanna elephants are in the savannas, south of the Sahara Desert. The African elephant known as Loxodonta Africana was placed on the endangered species list, while they are still very vulnerable, they have been populating more over the years. Another native species from the savannas of Africa is the gum tree identified as Acacia Senegal. The Acacia Senegal is important to many regions in Africa because the beneficial aspects of its bark. It. The bark also acknowledged as the "gum" is used as an adhesive, for things such as postage stamps, envelopes, pharmaceutical drugs, and candy. The bark of the Acacias is rich in tannin like many other plants, which is used in ink and dyes. Both species evolve in warm weather and know how to tolerate the temperatures, however, when it comes to extreme hot or cold weather it becomes difficult for them. In the South African Journal of Wildlife Research, they analyzed the movements of the Loxodonta Africana during the day in South Africa. Duffy and colleagues (Duffy et al,2011) explains how male elephants move quicker than females when alone, but when in a group the females are much faster. When the temperature is extremely high, the elephants in the savanna try not to move in any direction ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 74. Elephant Poaching The complexity surrounding conservation is a theme that I found both important and compelling. This topic came up during the "Class within a Class" on the Illegal Wildlife Trade. One of the readings assigned was a New York Times article about elephant poaching. After working at a charity focusing on wildlife preservation in Africa last summer, I had become passionate about elephant conservation. I had learned about the rapid decline of elephants along with the threat of poaching based on the ivory trade. Yet after completing the readings, I realized that the issue was more complicated than I had previously appreciated. For example, I was unaware of the complex geopolitical elements of the issue: the ivory demands of middle–class China, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The severity of these political and economic factors often impacts the success of a given convention's outcomes. We surveyed a variety of conservation treaties, from the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to the Agreement on the Conservation of Populations of European Bats (EUROBATS). Some of these, such as EUROBATS, were more successful, with a smaller group of countries being able to work in close cooperation through this treaty. Most European countries are relatively politically and economically stable and have a network of NGOs that can assist in conservation efforts. This contributed heavily to the success of EUROBATS. Conversely, CITES is an agreement that spans the globe, requiring the needs and interests of the global North and South be taken into account. As seen with the elephant poaching case study, some countries lack the ability to enforce the rules of CITES, even if they are a party to the convention. Without the cooperation of these countries, the impact of CITES on wildlife conservation has been weakened. The complexity surrounding conservation highlights the difficulties in creating an effective conservation regime for a given species and the problems in designing a treaty acceptable to all global States. Yet it also stands as a reminder of the necessity of global cooperation for solving trans–boundary environmental problems–an overarching theme of this course that is applicable to almost every issue we ... Kerala Elephants The path that led me to writing this story about the plight of the Kerala Elephants started when weeks ago I was graciously asked to join a Facebook group, appropriately named "Animal Activists." The next brick in my path was laid by Lisa Fay Wind–Roloff a well meaning member of this group. She sent me a picture of an abused elephants being held in Kerala, India. The path became even clearer as I delved deeper into my research on the agony and torture the Kerala Elephants are suffering at this very moment. As I searched the net and read many insightful articles and petitions devoted to stopping the Kerala torture, I came across a wonderful article, published by the New York Times on August 2013, titled "The Hard Life of Celebrity Elephants" ... But as with these animals a 7 year old is unable to change his daily fortune without a champion. Unlike these helpless creatures, I and millions of other children grew up to become men and women who said "Enough." No longer would we accept our fate. So we fought back and change our destiny to what we wanted, not what others tried to determine for us. The beatings I endured became routine, the pain dulled, and as a child lying in bed sobbing, battered from the nights punishment, I swore that I would never let any child, woman or animal suffer like this. I would willingly sacrifice myself in order to protect anyone from harm and in the years that have passed, life has presented me with far too many opportunities to put that seven year olds promise to the test and I have never once failed in honoring his vow.
