2. LENGTH – a measure of distance
Millimeters – 1000 millimeters equals one meter
1/1000 10 millimeters equals one centimeter
Centimeters – one centimeter is roughly the width of your pinky nail
100 100 centimeters equals one meter
Meters – The standard unit of length
Kilometers – 1000 meters equals one kilometer
1000

4. LENGTH
70 cm = ? mm
10 cm = ? mm
120 cm = ? mm
150 cm = ? m
75 mm = ? cm
9.5 m = ? cm
33 km = ? m
5,840 m = ? m
9,000,000 mm = ? km
5. Volume – a measure of how much space
something takes up.
Milliliters – 1000 milliliters equals one liter.
1/1000
Liters– The standard unit for volume.
There are 2 liters in a 2 liter bottle! Wow!
Kiloliters – 1000 liters equals one kiloliter.
1000
6. MASS – a measure of how much matter
something is made of – weight changes
when gravity changes.
Milligrams – 1000 milligrams equals one gram
1/1000
Grams – a paperclip masses at about 1 gram.
Kilograms – The standard unit for mass.
1000 1000 grams equals one kilogram
22 kilograms = ? grams
6,500 milligrams = ? grams
0.45 kilograms = ? grams
7. Mass and Weight
Mass and weight are different.
Weight is measured with gravity and a
spring scale. The weight pulls the spring
down. (can you measure weight in outer
space?)
On the moon, your weight will be different –
different gravity.
Your mass would be the same.
Balances measure mass – they would work
on the moon the same as here.
8. Temperature – a measure of how fast
molecules are moving.
Celsius – is used to measure temp – not
Fahrenheit.
Water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius.
Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius.
Room temp is about 20 degrees Celsius.
Kelvin is used for absolute zero – when
molecules and atoms stop moving.
