- Set List of Topics for Lesson Development:
- In a class of 22 students, each pair addresses one of the following topics:
1. Customary/Standard System: Length
- 12 inches = 1 foot
- 3 Feet = 1 Yard
- 5280 Feet = 1 Mile
- 1760 Yards = 1 Mile
2. Customary/Standard System: Weight/Mass
- 1 ounce = 28.349 grams
- 1 pound = 16 ounces
3. Customary/Standard System: Volume
- Cubic Inch, Cubic Foot, Cubic Yard
1 cubic foot (cu ft or ft3) = 1728 cubic inches (cu in)
1 cubic yard (cu yd or yd3) = 27 cubic feet (cu ft)
1 acre foot (acre ft) = 43,560 cubic feet (cu ft) = 1,613.333 cubic yards (cu yd)
- Cup, Pint, Quart, Gallon
1 cup = 8 fluid ounces
1 pint = 2 cups
1 quart = 2 pints = 4 cups
1 gallon = 4 quarts = 8 pints = 16 cups
4. Metric System: Length
- 1 Light Year = 9.46 * 10 kilometers
- 1 Kilometer = 103 meters = 1000 meters
- 1 Hectometer = 102 meters
- 1 Decameter = 101 meters
- 1 Decimeter = 10-1 meters
- 1 Centimeter = 10-2 meters
- 100 Centimeters = 1 meter
- 1 Millimeter = 10-3 meters
- 1000 millimeters = 1 meter

5. Metric System: Weight/Mass
- 1 metric ton = 1,000 kilograms
- 1 kilogram = 1,000 grams
- 1 gram = 1,000 milligrams
- 1 milligram = 1,000 micrograms
6. Metric System: Volume
- 1 megaliter = 1,000 kiloliters
- 1 Kiloleter = 103 liters = 1000 liters
- 1 Hectoliter = 102 liters
- 1 Decaliter = 101 liters
- 1 Deciliter = 10-1 liters
- 1 Centiliter = 10-2 liters
- 1 Milliliter = 10-3 liters
- 1000 milliliters = 1 liter
- 1 milliliter = 1000 microliters
7. Compare Standard & Metric System with ballpark calculations: Length
- 1 inch is about 2.5 centimeters.
- 1 foot is about 30 centimeters.
- 1 meter is a little longer than a yard, or about 40 inches.
- 1 mile is slightly farther than 1.5 kilometers.
- 1 kilometer is slightly farther than half a mile.
- 1 gram of water = 1 milliliter = 1 cubic centimeter at 25°C
8. Compare Standard & Metric System with ballpark calculations: Weight/Mass
- 1 ounce is about 28 grams.
- 1 nickel has the mass of about 5 grams.
- 1 kilogram is a little more than 2 pounds.
9. Compare Standard & Metric System with ballpark calculations: Volume
- 1 quart is a little less than 1 liter.
- 1 liter is a little more than 1 quart.
10. Celsius and Fahrenheit
- F = (9/5)(C) + 32
- C = (5/9)(F – 32)
- Water freezes at 0°C and 32°F.
3. Chelsea Prue
Lesson Topic: Standard and Metric Systems of Measurement
- Water boils at 100°C and 212°F.
- Normal body temperature is about 37°C and 98°F.
- Room temperature is about 20°C and 70°F.
11. Measuring Area: Customary/Standard System and Metric System
- Inches, Feet, Yards, Miles squared (Standard System)
- 1 acre = 43560 square feet (Standard System)
- Weight and mass are different. Mass is the amount of matter in an object. Weight is determined by the pull of gravity on the
mass of an object. The mass of an object remains the same regardless of its location. The weight of an object changes
dependent on the gravitational pull at its location. In everyday life, most people are actually interested in determining an
object’s mass, although they use the term weight, as shown by the questions: “How much does it weigh?” versus “What is its
mass?”
