Definition of computer   Webster's Dictionary defines  " computer "  as any programmable electronic device that can store, retrieve, and process data .  The basic idea of computing develops in the 1200's when a Moslem cleric proposes solving problems with a series of written procedures .

Origin of IBM IBM's history dates back decades before the development of electronic computers .  Of the companies merged to form what later became IBM, the oldest was the Tabulating Machine Company, founded in 1896 by Herman  Hilarity, and specialized in the development of  punched card data processing equipment .
