The document discusses the differences between skills and qualities, important qualities for command such as confidence and integrity, and how command and control is exercised. It defines skills as things learned over time through work or education, while qualities are personality traits one is born with. Important qualities for command include confidence, responsibility, calmness, logic, determination, and integrity. Effective command and control relies on developing trust, loyalty, discipline, morale, motivation, and respect among teams. It is implemented through strategic planning, briefing teams, and establishing a chain of command across sectors.
2. What is a Skill?
A Skill;
a skill is something that you learn to do over a
period of time. During education or work you
will learn new skills that you can use for
different things. e.g. you will learn the skill of
using a camera while studying a media subject
or training with a company that specialises in
using cameras.
3. What is a Quality?
A Quality;
a quality is something that you would have
been born with. It is something that will
improve as you get older as it is a part of your
personality. It is not something that you can
learn to do, it is something that you just know.
e.g the quality of listening would have been
learnt as a child. Your parents would have
taught you to listen to things that are being said
or sounds that you hear as a child.
4. The Difference Between a Skill
and a Quality
The Difference;
the differences between a skill and a quality are
that one is learnt and one is what you are born
with. One is gained by working in a job or at
an educational location. The other is one that
is a part of your personality.
6. Why are these qualities important
Confidence= having confidence is very important because if you are
working in a team and you are their leader they need someone that
they can look up to and rely on. You need to be confident in your
own judgment and decision making.
Responsible= it is important to be responsible because by choosing
to be responsible you improve your life. If you act responsible then
people will learn to trust that you will do what you say you will and that
you will and can be counted on.
Calm= it is important to stay calm in tricky/hard situations because if
you stay calm you stayed focused and you can see things in a clearer
and more openly.
7. Logical= Being logical is important because it means you
are fast thinking when it comes to situations for example if
there was a fire you would use a fire extinguisher to put it
out. That is being logical to the situation, thinking clearly
and making a decision that’s most relevant to the task.
Determination= is very important because it makes you
push beyond resistance in your mind, which says you cant
do something, but then you find a way to do it.
Integrity= having integrity is important because if you are
working in a team it shows them that you are honest and
reliable and value your decisions. Without it they would find
it hard to trust you.
8. Result of good command and control
TRUST- Develops strong belief in their reliability; you can
depend upon them without fear or hesitation. Trust is a mutual
thing, especially in the uniformed public services, and it is only
because trust is reciprocated that command and control is
successful.
LOYALTY- In the services loyalty means to be faithful to your
duty and to remain committed to your task. The nature of the
services means that loyalty is important as there are many
occasions when members of the services are under extreme
pressure. Results in a closer working team.
DISCIPLINE- Without the reassurance of discipline there would
be no command and control because the hierarchical structure
would collapse, leading to chaos within the service. It is needed
for maintaining order and for ensuring that rules and regulations
are followed and orders are carried out.
9. MORALE- Morale is a state of mind that can affect the way you and
as team, or service, work. Low morale results in unproductivity and
is one of the worst things for the services. Without it leads to poor
team spirit and lack of motivation.
MOTIVATIOR- Lack of motivation can be damaging to the services
because it means there is no interest in the job to be done. Even
when its just one person having no motivation it can have an adverse
effect on the teams performance. This because it effect the team
spirit because not everyone is trying their best and a burden is
placed on the remainder of the team.
RESPECT- Without respect for the ranks above you can lead to low
morale and lack of motivation which can effect the smooth operation
of the service. Without respect in command and control the team
wont be able to perform affectivity and would result in poor
performance.
10. How an individual can exercise command
and control
The emergency services use similar methods of command and control. They
using use the same systems when dealing with large incident calls for
combined response. The inital command and control of each service is
initiated by the first vechile to attend the scene. A chain of command is
estabished by dividing the incident into secotrs or levels of command. Each
of the services appoints a sector commander who operates in that sector
with a team of personell from there service. Which is why there will be three
sector commanders and at east three teams of emergency service personell.
STRATEGIC/ GOLD,
- Sets the stragey of how to deal with the job.
- Using in a romote location.
TACTICAL/ SILVER,
- How they will do the job.
- Set in a foward control point.
- Less senior than the gold sector.
OPERATIONAL/BRONZE
- This sector do the job with is set.
11. PLANNING- Successful strategies are formulated by individuals who have
clear objectives that can be realistically achieved in a given time. One of the
most popular models of formulating successful plans is the SMART personal
development plan.
Specific- objectives must be specific and clearly set out. Result of non
specific plan would be difficult to follow and would be to ambiguous.
Measurable- objectives must be measurable so that you can see the
progress of your plan and see how far you have travelled towards
achieving it. If you can measure it you have no way of knowing if you are
heading in the right or wrong direction.
Achievable- objectives must be achievable or it would be pointless in
setting them as goals. If it is achievable it means it can be accomplished
or reached even if it involves lots of hard work and dedication.
Realistic- if it realistic it means that it you must be reasonable in what
you want to achieve. If you set goals to high they wouldn’t be realistic
and you wouldn’t be able to achieve them and would follow you losing
heart when you can complete them.
Time related- making your objectives complete over an achievable period
of time. You can measure success or failure with no time limit. This
would also push you towards your goal.
12. BRIEFING/ SETTING OBJECTIVES- in the services briefing is important
because it can mean the success or failure of an operation. Briefing sets the
objectives, targets and goals. It is important to brief and teams o that
everyone is clear what is happening and what there roles are. There are
several points that constitute an effective briefing:
Information- an explanation of the state or affairs and the reason why the
operation is important. The key information is highlighted.
Intention- the assignment or task is explained. What they want out of the
operation is shown.
Method- the means of carrying out the mission is explained in great
detail. How they will do the operation.
Admin- The key information linked with the method is given. Including
things like: time on duty for briefing, dress (Uniform or Plain clothes),
equipment needed and debrief time.
Communications- information on how they will communicate in the
operation. Including radio channels and useful phone numbers.
Health & safety- The stage where they identify potential risks and how to
minimise them.
