The document discusses conventions used in album magazine advertisements. It analyzes the use of images, typography, color, names, facial expressions, buzz words, shot types, and web addresses in advertising Jessie J's album "Who You Are". Various theories are applied to explain how these conventions construct identities, meet audience needs, and influence purchasing decisions.
1. Conventions of an album magazine advert:
Image: This particular album advert uses an
image of the album as the main image on the
advert. This has been done in order to show
the audience what the album looks like. This
helps to make it easily recognisable in the
shops. This makes the audience feel confident
as they know exactly what they are buying
when they go into a shop. In relation to
Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs this offers the
audience safety needs as they feel safe in
knowing exactly what they album they are
going to buy looks like.
Typography: This particular album cover has
chosen to use a sans serif font. This has been
done in order to present Jessie J as being
tough and almost masculine. This subverts
from the normal conventions of a female
solving the social tension of dreariness and
replacing it with the utopian solution of
intensity in relation to Dyer’s Utopian Theory.
This is as it offers the audience a different
representation of women than they are used
to.
Colour code: The colour black has been used, this colour has connotations of
darkness and danger. This has been done in order to show Jessie J as being
different from other artists. In relation to Richard Dyer’s Star Theory this shows
how a star is a construction as she is being constructed as being this rock type
pop singer, maybe to help her sell albums? It almost makes the audience feel
slightly scared. However they find this intriguing which thus makes them buy
into her image.
Name of the album: The name of the album
has been used on the front of this magazine
advert. This is as it helps the audience to both
recognise the album if they hear the name of it
and to also be able to talk about it with friends
and family. In relation to Maslow’s Hierarchy of
needs this offers the audience love and
belonging this is as the audience feel part of
something when they are able to talk about
the newest album. This also relates to the
name of the album “who you are” this is as it is
making the audience step back and look at
who they are as people. Making them both
intrigued by Jessie J’s perception of them and
her perception of herself.
2. Conventions of an album magazine advert:
Facial Code: The facial code used in the album cover looks incredibly fierce it represents her as being a very strong independent
woman making the audience feel as if she is almost a role model for them. However her mouth is also slightly opened making her
look incredibly sexualised. This particular facial code would conform to the Male Gaze Theory as she is being presented for the
view of the heterosexual male through being seen as being sexual. This convention is easily recognised by an audience as women
are stereotypically seen throughout the media as being very sexual. This makes the audience feel safe as they are able to
recognise the convention.
Buzz Words: The use of buzz words such as “ number one international smash” has been used
in order to make the audience feel as if the magazine advert has been made especially for
them. In relation to Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs this offers the audience a sense of love and
belonging. This as they feel important to the producer of the advert which thus results in them
buying the album.
Shot Type: The shot type that has been used on the advert for this album is a close up. This has
been done in order to show Jessie J as being the centre of attention. This is as it makes the
audience focus on her and look directly at her image. This subverts from the typical
conventions of a typical woman. This is as she is being shown as being important and in
relation to Richard Dyer’s Utopian theory it offers the audience transparency as it enables them
to see women in a new light.
Web Address: The web address has been used in order to help the audience both find where
they can buy the album and view the album on different platforms. This makes the audience
feel happy in the fact they have been given a choice. In relation to Richard Dyer’s Utopian
theory it offers the audience abundance, this is as it offers a range of different ways in which
the audience can see the album offering them choice.
