The concept of digital twins traces back to David Gelernter's "Mirror
Worlds" in 1991. Dr. Michael Grieves applied it to manufacturing in
2002, introducing the digital twin software idea. NASA's John Vickers
coined the term "digital twin" in 2010. However, NASA used analogous
technology in the 1960s during space missions, replicating spacecraft
on Earth for study and simulation, marking an early version of digital
twin technology. This practice allowed NASA personnel to analyze
and simulate spacecraft performance, pioneering the foundational
idea of digitally twinning physical objects for study and improvement.
