  • 2. • History of cruising in Turkey begins in 1926 with the Atatürks initiatives• With the privatization in 1992, today there are not any Turkish ships in territorial waters.• Within one year Turkey managed to be ranked among the first ten countries in regard to the number of tourists and tourism revenues in the world.

STRENGTHS• Geographic location and proximity to the European market.• Having a gradually growing market and lure of the potential market• Mediteranean climate makes this region one of the most livable destination• The existence of natural, historical and cultural attractions.• Maintenance and restoration services.• Awarded Famous Ports• Extensive posibilities in International Transportation• Intraregional transportation facilities• Every year increasing number of ships and tourists• Current government supports cruise tourism

WEAKNESSES• Turkey does not own a cruise ship itself• Incompleted brand image• Limited Season and Low Capacity Utilization• Insufficient capacity of ports to meet the demand and the need for new cruise ports• High fees of port services compared to other countries• Inadequate domestic demand albeit the size of the market• Inadequacy of incentives towards cruise tourism in Turkey• Inadequacy of promotion• Lack of Infrastructure Facilities• Nonskilled labor

OPPURTUNITIES• More Poweful Location than other Competitor Countries.• Coasts are using as a departure and arrival point by Cruise Ships.• Possibilities of changing current trip programme.• High purchasing power of foreign currency.• Increasing demands on cultural, natural and historical tourism• Due to political unrest in Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt, orientation of cruise tours, which were headed towards the aforementioned countries• Due to the economic crisis experienced in Greece, some tour operators in Turkey seizing the opportunity for selling tours at home and abroad by renting Greek-flagged cruise ships

THREATS• Negative news from the foreign press• Turkey’s EU candidacy progress took more time than expected• EU encourage domestic tourism activities• Insufficient capacity of ports to meet the demand and the need for new cruise ports• High fees of port services compared to other countries• Inadequate domestic demand albeit the size of the market• Inadequacy of incentives towards cruise tourism in Turkey• Inadequacy of promotion
  • 7. • To sum up Turkey has an big importance with strategic and geographic position. Being surrounded by sea provides many advantages to Turkey . Although its position Turkey has not own cruises and shipyard. This is a disadvantage for Turkey. If we protect and advertise the historical values more and more we will be a good competitive in tourism and we will take a good part in cruise tourism.
