Hello Alicia! How are you?
Fantastic! I am just coming back from a seminar about voting in federal elections
in Canada.
Sounds interesting! What did you learn?
Well, for one thing, I learned that in a federal election you don’t actually vote
for the prime minister.
Really? Then who do you vote for?
You vote for a candidate that wants to represent the people that live in a certain
electoral district . The man or woman that gets the most votes will be an MP.
Oh yes! I think I heard about this. Then, the leader of the party that obtains the
most MPs after the election will be the prime minister.
Exactly!
Did you learn anything else?
I sure did! It was something about minority governments and …..

and majority governments?
Right. If the winning party wins more than half of the electoral districts, the
winning party will form a majority government.
… and a minority government if they win less than half?
I think so. We also discussed something about the leader of the opposition.
Very interesting.
The seminar actually has 2 parts. I am going to go back tomorrow night. Would you
like to come? We are going to talk about voting.
I might go with you.
We are going to cover voter’s cards and something about how you can vote simply
by taking an oath
Taking an oath? What does that mean?
I have no idea, but come with me and we’ll both find out!
