Numbers of students are dropping as more families leave China. The market is very
competitive right now with more school events than ever before in Beijing.
4. Uh oh! Pollution!!!
Pollution is of course the key reason why the numbers of expatriates in Beijing has
dropped in recent years.
5. What are schools doing?
Schools that do not have funds to battle the pollution problem will struggle in the coming years.
More established schools are able to provide domes and/or central air filtration systems.
6. Facilities
Are the schools facilities for your childâs education, or are they sales tools?

Even those schools that are registered are not all successful. The schools highlighted in red have
actually closed down.
8. Police Crackdowns
The Chinese government is getting stricter with schools, especially regarding teachers.
Some teachers at schools in Beijing are working with incorrect visas or without full
teaching qualifications.
9. School Fees
The schools with higher fees
do more for their teaching
staff compared with smaller,
less established schools.
They will provide benefits
such as housing, flights,
healthcare and offer
opportunities for teachers to
undertake new educational
degrees, in addition to
attending worldwide
international education
conferences and seminars.
For these reasons, more
expensive schools are
attracting more experienced
teachers.
10. Teacher Qualifications at YCIS Beijing
⢠Must have a teaching certificate.
⢠Must have at least 3 years experience of full time
independent teaching in their home country or a recognised
international school in another country.
⢠Must provide all documents and have a police background
check.
12. Choosing a School
Internet Search
Relocation Companies
Word of Mouth
School Choice Fairs
School Choice Guides
Choosing a school is tough as there
are many schools that are do not
have the correct international school
license. Parents are not always aware
of this at point of first contact.
14. What is an International School?
⢠Different Nationalities of Students
⢠Different Nationalities of Teachers
⢠International by Nature, not just by Name
⢠An International Curriculum
⢠An International Focus in all Subjects
15. Interestingly, China has constantly
scored higher in tests compared with
the majority of the Western world,
including the US, which has
performed quite poorly.
However, these tests are clearly not a
great benchmark as the US have
thrived in the past 50 years, especially
in terms of innovation, whereas China
has struggled in the industry.
16. The Conundrum of Modern Education
So now we have an interesting situation in which China is
trying to learn from the education model of the US and the
US is trying to learn from the education model of China.
YCIS has been combing both models for over 80 years.
17. YCIS is about Education
⢠Dr. Betty Chan is the leader of YCIS
⢠An Educator
⢠A vision for a truly international school & curriculum

Illinois, University of Bath and Hong Kong Institute of Education
