Yew Chung International School of Beijing Primary Introduction
What is an International School
1. What is an International School?
• Different Nationalities of Students
• Different Nationalities of Teachers
• International by Nature, not just by Name
• An International Curriculum
• An International Focus in all Subjects
2. Interestingly, China has constantly
scored higher in tests compared with
the majority of the Western world,
including the US, which has
performed quite poorly.
However, these tests are clearly not a
great benchmark as the US have
thrived in the past 50 years, especially
in terms of innovation, whereas China
has struggled in the industry.
3. The Conundrum of Modern Education
So now we have an interesting situation in which China is
trying to learn from the education model of the US and the
US is trying to learn from the education model of China.
YCIS has been combing both models for over 80 years.
4. YCIS is about Education
• Dr. Betty Chan is the leader of YCIS
• An Educator
• A vision for a truly international school & curriculum
• Madame Tsang Chor-hang founded YCIS in 1932
• Dr. Chan has received honorary doctorates from University of
Illinois, University of Bath and Hong Kong Institute of Education
5. Leadership is Vital!
Co Principals Mr. Noel Thomas and Ms. Christine Xu have a
combined experience of over 45 years in education.
6. Kindergarten to Year 13

9. Truly International
Our students have a huge amount of opportunities to experience different cultural
perspectives in all subjects and topics.
In every year level, students will be introduced to at least two cultural perspectives in
different subject topics to allow for more cultural awareness and international mindedness.

11. Why is Character Education Important?
Character Education is important because we don’t want our students
to becoming like the person in this picture who will do anything to
succeed.

YCIS students are taught not just to lead, but do things that will benefit all
society and change the world for the better.
