How does your media product
represent particular social
group?
Gabriella
Ewelina
Female child aged 8: stereotyped to be innocent, wear colourful clothes, always joyful and
playing.
In our opening sequence, we represented her wearing a colourful top and a hoodie with jeans
and trainers. Usually you would expect a girl this age to dress a bit more girly, for example in
dress
We decided to choose female child, because mostly children are victim of unstable emotionally
people, as they are vulnerable and easy to lure – especially girls
What social group does your main character
represent and why?
Our main character is the clown: he is young adult represented as being someone that has
been disturbed from an early childhood a you can see in the flashbacks. In the flashback you
can hear the parents arguing in the background.
We decided to choose this social group because usually in psychological horrors main
characters are adults, as they had chance to experience trauma in their life. Also it is more
likely for adult to have mental problems, for example, because they experienced trauma in
childhood and later when they already grew up this trauma back to them and effect their
mentality.
How do you represent your main character
through MES-ES-SCENE?
The girl’s clothes highlight her young age.
Colourful top can represent her great
imagination and young age.
The Clown’s outfit, during the day is quiet
normal. He wears maroon hoodie and black
jeans. This is a little different to other young
adult, as they wears mostly casual clothes,
because at this age they are more mature.
Clown’s sharp tool shows that he can be
dangerous and able to harm someone, as this
is not normal that people have sharp tools
with them.
Empty bottles from alcohol on windowsill
shows that he grew up in dysfunctional
family, which create idea that he had unstable
childhood.
Facial expression and body language
Assertive posture and facial
expression shows that he is self-
confidence
The body language of female girl,
when she is on swing, shows that
she is vulnerable. She firmly
holds chain, which shows that
this makes her feel safe.
The body language of female girl
when she runs away shows that
she is scary. A quick run shows that
she want to escape as soon as
possible from this place where
unknown man scared her.
Her facial expressions seems confused which
is what you would expect from a small child.
This shows that she don’t know what is
going on and she starts to be frightened.
Facial expression of girl shows that she tries to be
nice to unknown man, as she wants to smile to
him.
Facial expression of Clown
looks friendly, as he smiles
back to girl. However fact that
he is staring at her shows that
he is strange and something
with him is wrong. This shows
that he is disturbed
The rapid movements while
he is torturing Clown doll
shows that he is unstable
emotionally
His facial expression shows
that he is scary. This shows
that he has mental problems,
as he is scary of inanimate
objects.
He walks slowly which
shows that he isn't in a rush
and he is taking things
slowly which is usually how
people with psychological
problems like to do things.
Locations
The place where girl is portray her as a child. Fact that she is in
park shows that she wants to have fun and play around. This is
normal for child aged 8 that they enjoy playing in the park.
Fact that she was alone in the park shows that she is clever for
her age and parents trust her.
Moreover fact that she is playing in the park next to her house
shows that she is scary to go somewhere without her parents.
By playing in the park she is sure that her parents can look at her
from window.
Clown during the day is looking on children in the park, this
portray him as strange person, as this is not normal that young
adult is staring at children in the park. , especially when there is
no one from his family.
When in the evening Clown is back to the park and looks at the
swing, where girl was, shows his mentally problems. Moreover
he is going to the front of girl’s house, which shows that he was
observed and he knows where she is living. This highlight his
obsession and mentally problems.
How do you represent your main character
through the camera shots and editing?
Our main character is represented as disturbed and mentally ill through the camera shots
and editing.
We used close-ups and mid shots, which shows his facial
expression and attitude.
The changing of his facial expression shows that he is
unstable emotionally, as during the day he looked friendly,
whereas in the evening he was emphatic and looked
dangerous.
Also we tired to shows his as a disturbed person be using
dissolve transition when he is putting his make-up. This
shows that now he wants to become the object, which
traumatized his as a child
Moreover we tired to shows his as a disturbed person by using fast pace editing while he is walking to the front of girl’s house to create
a tension, so audience could become panic, because they doesn’t know what he is planning to do to this child, as from flashbacks they
discovered that he had unstable child and he is unstable emotionally
Our other character is represented as a innocent and scared
We used close-ups, mid shots and long shots to display her
vulnerability.
Through the use of these shots audience could notice her
facial expression and body language.
Through editing she was represented as innocent as well as scared.
The innocence was shown with eye-line matching and shot reverse shot when for the first time she saw unknown man (Clown).
The scared representation was shown when she was running away by match on action. She was scared because unknown man (Clown) gone
and she didn’t know what actually happen, as he was staring at her and even smiling to her and suddenly he is not there.
How do you represent your main character
through the music?
Through music our main character – Clown is represented
as unstable person
During flashback audience can hear the arguments between two
adults, which create idea that young boy grew up in dysfunctional
family and he didn’t get a lot of attention from his parents. This
gave effect on his emotionality
