was actually reaction of romanticism

Realism started around the start of
civil war. This is because people
wanted to read stories that they
could relate to, rather than the
unrealistic stories of romanticism.

6. The realist movement in literature first developed in
France in the mid 19th century and soon spread to
England, Russia, and America. Realist literature is best
represented by novel, including many work regarding to
be among the greatest novel ever written.
Realist writers tried to narrated their stories from an
objective unbiased perspective that simply & clearly
represented in the factual elements of the story.
7. Second half of the 19th century was no
longer the romantic idealism but a new
approach to character and subject matter
which became a school of thought.
Realism is an attention to detail, an
effort to replicate/copy the true nature
of reality.

Balzac, Gustav Flaubert, Emile Zola, and Guy the
Maupassant.

11. French Realist Writers
Honore de Balzac(1799-1850)
Balzac is recognized as the origin of French
realism in literature and the greatest novelist of
19th century. He was a man of great charisma and
to the accesses of life. His life's were comprises
of a series of some 90 novels and novellas
collectively entitled La Comeedie Humaine (the
human comedy) Balzac supported himself through
writing by spending 14 to 16 hours a day on his
craft.
12. Gustave Flaubert(1821-1880)
Gustave is known as the consummate writer of
French realism. He became acquainted with many
of the important writers of the day including
George Sand Zola and Maupassant. His major
works include the novels Madam Bovary,
Salammbo, Education Sentimental(A young mans
history)
13. Emile Zola(1840-1902)
zola is one of the greatest novelist of all time, He
was the founder of naturalism in literature which
was a further developed of realism. Zola became
famous for his literary interventions, a highly
controversial political figure. He defended the
rights of Jewish military officers.
14. Guy The Maupassant(1850-1993)
He is known as major practitioner of naturalism,
and realism and exceptionally fine short story
writer. With the publication of his story “Ball Of
Fact” Maupassant gained immediate literary
success and went on to publish some 300 short
stories and 6 novels as well as several non-fiction
books and a volume of poetry.

Charles Dickens(1812-1870)
He was an English writer and social critic. He
created some of the world's best-known fictional
characters and is regarded as the greatest
novelist of the Realist age. His works enjoyed
popularity during his lifetime, His novels and
short stories enjoy lasting popularity. Dickens's
literary success began with the 1836 serial
publication of The pickwick papers. Dickens
published more than a dozen major novels, a
large number of short stories, including a number
of Christmas-themed stories, a handful of plays,
and several non-fiction books.
16. George Eliot(1819-1880)
was an English novelist, poet, journalist, translator
and one of the leading writers of the Realist age.
She is the author of seven novels, including Adam
Bede, and The Mill On The Floos. most of them set
in provincial England and known for
their realism and psychological insight.
17. Russian Realist Writers
Leo Tolstoy(1828-1910)
Tolstoy is known as major Russian realist writer and
one of the most eminent novelist of all time. Tolstoy
first publication Detstove (childhood) is a Nostalgic
(memories) work of fiction based on the early years of
his life.
Tolstoy's greatest novels are Voini I Mir (moral piece)
and Anna Karenina)
18. Fyodor Dostoevsky(1821-1881)
He is known as the major author of Russian
realist fiction and one of the greatest
novelist of all the time. He began writing in
his 20s, and his first novel, Poor Folk, was
published in 1846 when he was 25. His
major works include Crime and
Punishment, The Idiot, Demons and The
Brothers Karamazov.
19. American Realist Writers
William Dean Howells(1837-1920)
He is foremost American realist writer of 19th
century. In 1860 he wrote a biography of then
president candidate Abraham Lincoin. Howell
earned distinction as a highly influential
literary critic, championing the realistic writing
of American author Henry James and Max
Twain.
