2. What is Windows?
o Microsoft Windows, commonly referred to as Windows, is a group of several
proprietary graphical operating system families, all of which are developed and
marketed by Microsoft.
o The most important piece of software on any computer is the operating
system. The operating system gives the framework upon which all other
services and applications run. For the past two decades, Windows has been
the most widely used operating system for personal computers.
o Even to this date many applications and games are designed to run solely on
Microsoft systems.
3. History
o Microsoft was founded by Paul Allen and Bill Gates on April 4, 1975, to develop
and sell BASIC interpreters for the Altair 8800.
o Microsoft focuses on a new operating system—the software that manages, or
runs, the computer hardware and also serves to bridge the gap between the
computer hardware and programs, such as a word processor. They name their
new operating system "MS-DOS.“
oMS-DOS was the standard operating system for IBM compatible personnel
computers developed by Microsoft. The Initial versions of DOS were very
simple and resembled another operating systems called CP/M.

oMicrosoft Windows has been seen 9 major versions since its first release
in 1985
oOver 35 years later, windows looks very different but somehow familiar
with elements that have survived the test of time, increases in
computing power and – most recently a shift from the keyboard and
mouse to the touchscreen and Gestures.

o First True attempt at a GUI in 16 bit
o Multitasking shell on top of an existing MS- DOS installation

oProtected/Enhanced mode to run Windows applications with reduced

7. Windows 95
o Moved to multitasked 32-bit architecture
o Introduced the taskbar, the 'Start' button, and the way the user navigates

oImproved power management, network management, and USB support
o Added Standby and Hibernate modes for better power management

o Added NTFS (New Technology File System) 3.0, Microsoft Management
Console (MMC), and the Encrypting File System (EFS)

Windows ME
oIntroduced a System Restore feature, and improved digital media and
networking tools
o Windows Media Player and Windows Movie Maker made their appearance for
the first time

o Released with a redesigned look and feel that's centered on usability and a
unified Help and Support services center. Its was available in 25 languages.
o Windows XP was the longest running operating system
Windows Vista
oIntroduced Windows Search, Windows Aero, Windows Sidebar, Shadow Copy
o BitLocker Drive Encryption provides better data protection for your computer.
10. Windows 7
o Windows 7 was the first version of windows with Wi-Fi Support.
o The debut of Windows Touch, which lets touchscreen users browse the web,
flip through photos, and open files and folders.
Windows 8
oA totally new interface with a new taskbar and streamlined file management
that works smoothly for both touch and mouse and keyboard.
o A Start screen with tiles that connect to people, files, apps, and websites.
Windows Store was also introduced here.
11. Windows 10
o The new Start Menu, which looks somewhat like the old start menu. It brings
some features from the Windows 8 Start Screen, such as live tiles, and can be
resized.
oCortana a new personal assistant was introduced and it can search the web,
find things on your PC, keep track of your calendar—even tell you jokes.
o Command Prompt now supports copy, paste and resize.
oEdge was a new web browser rather than Internet Explorer, which allows users
to annotate webpages or save them to read later.
12. Windows 10
