Career teacher who convey empathy for their students' circumstances are often able to develop a closer connection with their them, which can motivate the students to confide their true aspirations to the teacher.
Insight
Career teacher need insight to read between the lines of what the students are saying, to determine the true meaning behind the words. Insight allows teacher to develop action plans focused on their students' strengths and desires.
Communication and Listening
Communication skills allow career teacher to help students in writing or revising resumes and cover letters. Communication skills are also essential for counselors to perform services such as administering and interpreting career assessments to clients and conducting mock interviews. Active listening -- giving clients their full attention -- allows career counselors to observe nonverbal gestures as well as listening to their clients' words.
Flexibility and Tolerance
Career teacher must often deal with a range of students, including those of different ages. Openness in dealing with cultural and class distinctions as well as tolerance in dealing with them with different career aspirations are essential. Flexibility allows counselors to shift more easily between multiple functions, including one-to-one conferences with clients, developing resumes and cover letters, and administering career assessments.
