Lecture 2 - VDIS10023 – From Design Brief to Design.
Here, is the finale! The Design. We have a brief and a plan which will now culminate into a Design. A design that addresses the aims mentioned in the brief, it gives an attractive form to the conceptual thoughts of the designer and completes a function. It is the design that takes the client’s message through the designer’s idea and a media to the target audience.
3. *
Design is the creation or assembly
of elements into a cohesive,
meaningful order.
4. The Plan = idea, media, elements
The Design = the solution
The Brief = purpose/problem
*
5. *
As design develops, increase the visual resemblance
by establishing elements of style, colour and graphics.
6. As the design is refined, replace dummy text with real
content to get a feel of how it affects the overall design.
*
7. *
Adding interactivity in subsequent iterations increases
functional resemblance and allows the design to be
used for usability testing.
8. *
* Final designs are also called as
“Prototypes”.
* A prototype is a concrete
representation, a model built to test a
concept or process or a thing to be
replicated or learned from.
9. *
* For any print media, build a prototype by simply
creating a layout, placing the graphics and text.
* For any digital media, if you need to show the
interactions, create a series of screens.
* For a TV commercial, create a storyboard.
* For packaging, create a mock-‐‑up.
* For an exhibition booth or any other installation,
build a model in 3D or Photoshop.

* The Design
* Sketches – upload your sketches on week 7
* Group Critique – upload your prototypes for a
group critique on week 10
* Final Submission – implement the feedback of
the group critique and submit your final design
on week 11
12. *
* sketch your ideas
* identify the method to build a prototypes
* present the final design solution
* write a report on how you propose the design
solutions to be implemented
13. *
* For the purpose of documentation, record the
progress of your work. Make notes of the
discussions/feedback you get from your
instructor and during the group critique.
* Use the template provided on the class portal to
guide you through this journey. Please make
sure that you are not missing any important
points. Use the template as a guideline not a
rule. You may modify it to suit your purpose.
