Reflected ceiling plans (RCPs) show a mirrored view of the ceiling from below and include lighting locations, ceiling height changes, fixture types, switching locations, notes, and HVAC/speaker/smoke detector elements. RCPs are useful for visualizing ceiling elements and ensuring proper lighting, ventilation, and equipment placement. Standard symbols are used to denote different lighting types, switching, outlets, fire protection, and other ceiling features.

• Reflected Ceiling Plans (RCP) are named so
because they are mirror images (reflected)
view of the floor plan. You are looking up at
the ceiling. You will see the lights and
various ceiling elements in this view.

Some items included in residential RCP’s are:
• Lighting locations – Showing the box connecting to the electric system
• Drops or ceiling height changes
• Type of light fixture – Is it a sconce, Ceiling or recessed light
• Switching locations – From where do you turn the light on
• Notes referring to the type of fixture or instructions – Is it a ceiling fan, it
might need more support
• Exhaust fans or exhaust hoods
• Air diffusers and vents/HVAC
• Speakers from stereos or other communication devices
• Smoke/fire/carbon monoxide/fire protection/alarm devices
• Any item decorative or structural, which touches the ceiling
• Show windows and doors – show lighter lines where door would be
