Criteria For Social Anxiety
I would ask Allie to rate her anxiety on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being no anxiety and 10 being a
panic attack.
Allie meets the DSM 5 2013 Criteria for Social Anxiety; therefore, it cannot be ruled out at this
time. The clinical picture portrays an adolescent female that has few friends, has difficulty
participating in classroom activities, persistent fear, especially when called upon to answer a
question or work in a group. She avoids social interaction where she may have to perform in front of
others. Allie's social impairment is associated with a dysphoric mood, she often feels uneasy and
sad. Allie's symptoms of anxiety began around the age 9 or 10 due to being bullied in school and has
progressively worsened over the last 4 to 5 years. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Allie can identify the cause of her stress}
The feared situations are avoided or else are endured with intense anxiety and distress.
The avoidance, anxious anticipation, or distress in the feared social or performance situation(s)
interferes significantly with the person's normal routine, (academic) functioning, or social activities
or relationships, or there is marked distress about having the phobia. Allie is missing school.
The fear, anxiety, or avoidance is persistent, typically lasting 6 or more months.
The fear or avoidance is not due to direct physiological effects of a substance (e.g., drugs,
medications) or a general medical condition not better accounted for by another mental disorder
(American Psychiatric Association 2013).
Rule Out Depression
Key questions to rule out depression would include
To Rate depression on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being no anxiety and 10 being the worst depression
you ever experienced.
What are your symptoms?
How long have you had these symptoms?
How severe are the symptoms?
Have you had these symptoms before?
Were you treated for depression?
If so, what treatments have you had, and which worked best?
Do you use drugs or drink alcohol?
Have you thought about death or

What Are The Obstacles In The Odyssey
In the stories The Odyssey, Divergent, and Moana, each character must face an obstacle that
concerns them of making a decision which affects their own family, in order to reach their goal. In
The Odyssey, Odysseus left his wife, Penelope for twenty years. Through those twenty years,
Odysseus was playing pattycake with some of the goddesses that he was encountered with. While
Penelope was at home, waiting for him and staying loyal to their marriage. She was even
surrounded by a bunch of suitors who wanted to marry her since they all thought Odysseus was
never coming back. Penelope stayed loyal and told the suitors, "Young men, my suitors, now my
lord is dead, let me finish my weaving before I marry, or else my thread will have been spun in
vain...So every day she wove on the great loom–but every night by ... Show more content on

In this sentence Penelope was trying to delay the time that the suitors would give her because she
still had faith in Odysseus's returning. Even though Penelope was tempted by many men, she stayed
faithful to Odysseus which was a hard obstacle for her to go through. She didn't have her husband
for twenty years and she even had a son whom she had to raise by herself. She was able to
overcome the obstacle of losing family all by herself. Secondly, in Moana, Moana's father was very
strict about her getting into a boat in the ocean or even having her be by the ocean. He constantely
told her that it was too dangerous to go out beyond the reef. As Moana's father tried, what seemed
like everday, to stop her from going into the ocean, he knew that for her and for the island, he
needed to let her go beyond the reef. He needed to overcome the obstacle of letting his daughter go
and being on her own. From him letting his daughter go, she was able to restore the heart of Te Fiti
and save her home. Lastly in Divergent, as Tris joins a new faction, leaving her family behind, she
definitely feels lonely and doesn't really know if she made the right

Middle School Intervention Paper
Adolescents who feel more lonely are more likely they to be depressed, anxious and less likely to
take social risks (Moore & Schultz, 1983, p. 99). Similarly, "loneliness and depressive symptoms
influenced one another bidirectionally from mid to late adolescence, with the direction from
loneliness to depressive symptoms being stronger than the reversed direction" (Vanhalst, Klimstra,
Luyckx, Scholte, Engels, & Goossens, 2012, p. 782). Thus, our intervention aims to reduce these
feelings among middle school students. In turn, this goal is worthy from a sociatel perspective, as
reducing feelings of loneliness will have a positive effect on the teenagers' school performance, their
overall productivity as well as their reported life satisfaction (Trzesniewski, Donnellan, Moffitt,
Robins, Poulton ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Additionally, acts of solitary could be oriented towards including all students in class. For example,
a rewarded act could be to invite a fellow student to sit together at lunch time, or to help one another
in a class assignment. This way, we will reduce feeling of loneliness without approaching the lonely
student explicitly but by extending the rates of in class solidarity as a whole. Furthermore, we base
the method of intervention on the idea of conditional cooperation saying that people act more
solitary when other do the same (Fischbacher, Gächter & Fehr, 2001, p. 397). To evaluate
effectiveness, before starting the intervention, we will ask all the student in class to answer a scale
measuring loneliness so we can measure the effect of the intervention after a year and see if the
participants show reduced lonliness when answering the scale again (De Jong–Gierveld &

How Does Steinbeck Present Curley's Wife In Of Mice And Men
In Of Mice And Men Curley's wife is the most hopeless and misserable character in the story. She
has no future as she is stuck with her former husband (Curley) who hates her leaving his sight, she
has no friends as she is the only woman on the ranch and Curley will not allow her socializ with the
men because he feels that they would steel her, and she has no respect from anyone on the ranch
because why should they; She gets the men in trouble just by looking at them because well lets face
it shes made out to be a "whore" who is stunningly beautiful, why wouldnt you look; she doesn't
even withhold a name (which isnt even mentioned within the story) She is just known as Curleys

Lennie for this circumstance is classed as a bear, giving us a feeling of manliness and brutness. Such
portrayal of bear like activities would be the crusing and smashing of Curley's hand.Curley's small
masculine hands are no match for Lennie's solid, strong, bear–like paws thus giving us the result of
Curleys puvled hand. Lennie is an extremely sensitive boy who watches over his best friend and
lover, to add he has an etremely terrible temper. He gets uncannily hyped up just thinking about
having a pet rabbit or puppy, not to mention being aloud to have a one. Yet Lennie is incredibly
strong and cannot comprehend this. He doesnt perceive to be scary or frightening to anyone except
for Curley. Curley despises Lennie, in light of the fact that he couldn't care less for tremendous huge
men and really makes a joke of him because of his mental capacity and simple needs. Such bear–
like expressions are:"Dragging his feet a little as a bear would drag his paws". Yet this isn't the only
creature Lennie is implied to be, other cases include, being solid as a bull. This reliable constant use
of symbolism shows us Lennie's affection and commitment for creatures he could call his own for
example: rabbits, mice, and puppies. This makes us aware of how animal and to some degree child–

Pablo Neruda Literary Devices
There are several Literary devices that Pablo Neruda utilizes within his poetry. These Literary
devices include the Use of Metaphors and Similes, along with the utilization of Imagery within
almost every Neruda poem. Overall these devices play a huge role on conveying what Neruda is
attempting to describe to per se a reader, so that they can feel or compare the action to common
sensations received by senses.
Similies are huge literary devices as they can be found in almost all of his poems. Similies and
Imagry help to convey the message that Neruda is writing. Similies convey a similarity within
Neruda's poetry, using words Like or As. These similies such as the ones found within "Leaning into
the Evenings" convey more so emotions to that of a more comonality that the reader may
understand. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Without Imagery, Readers would not be able to feel the depth of Nerudas descriptions and what
emotions could be shared with an object or any sensual emotion felt. imagry within Neruda's poetry
utilizes aspects of Tactile imagry(touch), Visual Imagery(sight), Offracery imagery(smell) and
auditory Imagery(sound). PAblio Neruda's "Entrance into Wood" Shares that of Auditorial imagry as
several stanzas cover silence and tactile images describing the feel of the enviroment. "I pass among
the damp uprooted fibers to the live heart of matter and silence. ...with your pale dead swords, with
your gathered hearts, with your silent horde." Within the poem "Entrance into Wood", this Imagery
is crucial towards describing the emotions, and giving the reader an accurate description of the
situation. A silent horde isnt like a regular horde in which there is excessive noise, but with silence
helping decribing the character's appeal to a funeral. Without Imagery within Pablo Neruda's poetry,
the Poem loses contextual descriptions which like in "Entrance into Wood" can turn a horde of
people into a silenced horde of

The room was painted a dazzling navy blue sky, with shady hills and stars twinkling above the light
house. Just looking at it made Julia yawn, apart from her busy day at work. "Have a good day," Dr.
Julia whispered tiredly to her last patient as they left the vaccine room. Dragging her feet, she
slowly gathered her belongings and put them in a bag(4). As Julia strolled to the far back of the
room to switch off the lights something shiny caught her eye. She reached to the patient bed, and
picked up the glossy object. It was a gold coated ring with a shiny clear stone that glistened in the
bright white light. "Whatever," Julia thought as she examined the ring, "I'll just keep it." She slipped
the small object into her pocket. A chill went down her spine. "Grabbed my stuff, switched off the
lights, do I need to do anything else? Yep...sleep!" Julia thought to herself. She waved to the doctors
on her way out of the hospital.. She opened the door to her house and her mom and dad rushed to
her. "How was your day honey?" they asked. Exhausted, Julia replied, "It was fine, but I better sleep
now."(4) She tiptoed up the stairs and creaked open the door. The long day ended, her body restless
and sour, Julia's room welcomed her with a lavender scent drifting from the air freshner by her

Donald Trump's Essay: The Isolation Of America
The isolation of America in relation to other nations will handicap the citizens of our country;
however, President Donald Trump suggests this isolation would "make America great again". Trump
first supports this idea by informing the American people what has taken place in this country due to
our interventions in other nations. He notes that "for many decades, we've enriched foreign industry
at the expense of American industry; subsidized the armies of other countries while allowing for the
very sad depletion of our military ; we've defended other nation's borders while refusing to defend
our own; and spent trillions of dollars overseas while America's infrastructure has fallen into
disrepair and decay". He continues,"we've made other countries ... Show more content on

One of the greatest advantages of this country is the fact that we are a democratic nation. We, as the
American people have the luxury to have a voice and the opportunity to unite for numerous reasons,
one being to chose who governs our state. A healthy and effecient Democracy is when people
organize for a joint purpose. Alexis De Tocqueville supports this in his selection of Democracy of
America, "but among democratic peoples all the citizens are independent and weak [...] they would
all therefore find themselves helpless if they did not learn to help each other voluntarily" (Davis &
Lynn p. 57). In relation to President Trump's inaguaral address, he identifies the power of our
Democracy suggesting "we must speak our minds openly, debate our dissagreements honestly, but
always pursue solidarity. When America is united, America is totally unstoppable". Americans
ability to unite in a civilized manner promotes a supreme country. This is the admirable aspect of
America's Democracy; however, concerns with Democracy in America can arise when the chosen
leadership creates moral conflict among the people. A part of Trump's speech reflects such conflict
when he says, "we will reiforce old alliances and form new ones––and unite the civilized world
against radical Islamic terrorism, which we will eradicate completely from the face of the Earth". He
is foreshadowing a war that is not neccessarily in the best interest of mankind and is using the unity
of America to implement such warfare. Though, Tocquville defnitely mentioned in Davis and Lynn
how "In democratic countries only the governing power is naturally in a position so to act, but it is
easy to see that its action is always inadequate and often dangerous" (p. 56). It is fair to say
Democracy is a beautiful priviledge in a sense that it allows

Isolation: A Short Story
The place is here, the time is now, and the journey into the shadows that we're about to watch could
be our journey. A journey that could be grand or self destructive. Day by day, person by person, who
is there to meet that will make your journey grand? Does such a person exist? Maybe you're better
off away from society, alone, where you can not be hurt or can not hurt. Up there, up there in the
vastness of space, in the void that is sky, up there some say is the enemy known as isolation. It sits
there in the stars waiting, waiting with the patience of eons, forever waiting. Some come face to face
with the blackness, and howl at the lonliness. Thats what most would do. I, at this minute, at this

Lonliness In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men
Lonliness in "Of Mice and Men" In John Steinbecks novel "Of Mice and Men" he tells the story of
two men Lennie and George. Lennie, is a mentally handicap man for whom George cares, they
travel farm to farm working to raise money to buy a place of their own. At their last fateful stop,
they meet a variety of interesting yet very long characters. Steinbeck includes several different
themes throughout this novel however lonliness is one of the most prevelant and is coveyed through
the characters in this novel. The first character we meet is other than Lennie and George is Candy.
Candy has no family (as he told us when George was telling him about "the place".) He feels as if
no one is on his side, for example, when Carlson keeps trying to convince Candy to let him shoot

Candy also only has one arm so he cannot do much. Candy is also the oldest at the ranch, which
leaves no one else in his age group for him to communicate with. In addition to Candy, Curley's
wife, is another lonely character. Curley's wife has nobody to appreciate her, she experiences a lot of
sexism and no trust. Curley is constantly looking for his wife and always wanting to fight, this
causes her to dislike being on the ranch and having Curley as a husband. She is treated with sexism
because when she's around Curley thinks something's going on , this causes no one to want her
around. She tells Lennie at the end of the book that she doesn't even like Curley. The last character
that I am writing about is Crooks. Crooks is the old black man at the ranch which only few
appreciate. He experiences racism, no one will let him come into the bunkhouse to play cards
because he is black, as he mentions all he has is books. The only person who appears to show any
interest to Crooks in the story is Lennie. None of the men at the ranch talk to Crooks very much
other than giving orders. My essay has involved three different characters Candy,

Snapshots of Miss Emily in A Rose for Emily
"A Rose for Miss Emily" by William Faulkner is a story of quiet lonliness and tragedy. The story
ends on a surprising note, but one for which the reader is not totally unprepared. Faulkner very
cleverly uses changing pictures of Miss Emily's physical state to give the reader a clue as to what is
transpiring inside her.
The picture or "tableau" of Emily in her childhood gives us our first clue into her strange
personality. She is "a slender figure in white in the background, her father a spraddled silhouette in
the foreground, his back to her and clutching a horsewhip, the two of them framed by the back–
flung front door." The scene almost blatantly reveals Emily in her ... Show more content on

The turning point comes after Miss Emily has met and possibly fallen in love with Homer Barron. It
is this scene that clues the reader in to the surprising ending. They have been seeing each other long
enough for the subject of marriage to come up when we next see her at the druggist's counter. Here
she is pictured as "thinner than usual, with cold, haughty black eyes in a face the flesh of which was
strained across the temples and about the eyesockets . . ." The description somewhat reminds us of a
sinister–looking skeleton, and somehow, we just know she is up to no good when she purchases the
arsenic from the druggist.
We know life is ebbing when we next see Miss Emily, but we can tell that she is stubbornly hanging
on. "She had grown fat and her hair was turning gray." Faulkner goes into great detail in describing
hair. I believe hair is a symbol not only of youth and of life, but also of strength. In describing her
hair as "vigorous iron–gray, like the hair of an active man," he alludes to her tenacity to hang on to
her ways.
Our final glimpse of Miss Emily before she dies is a picture of a soul which is nearly shut off from
life. Now and then the townspeople see her through one of the downstairs windows. The upstairs
and that part of her

Animal Testing Is Cruel And A Waste Of Time
"Right now, millions of mice, rats, rabbits, primates, cats, dogs and other animals are locked inside
barren cages in laboratories across the world. They languish in pain, ache, with lonliness, and long
to be free. Instead, all they can do is sit and wait in fear for the next terrifying and painful procedure
that will be performed on them". This statement about animal testing is from PETA.org. I have a
strong belief about this topic so I am arguing the point that animal testing is cruel and a waste of
time and money.
My first point is about the problem with animal testing for cosmetics. Around the world, countries
use all kinds of animals to test cosmetics so they are safe for us to buy and use on our skin daily. But
what we do not think about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are many types of alternatives that can be used for medical research such as; cell cultures,
human tissues, computer models and volunteer studies. There are very few countries that actually
use these alternatives which is selfish because they kill innocent animals because their projects are
not designed properly. They could be saving animals lives by using alternatives and it is a much
cheaper option. Alternatives for cosmetic research are toxicity tests, neuroscience and drug
development. These are safer ways to test products to roll out the kinks so they wont burn or irritate
skin without harshly testing them on animals. I think all brands should go cruelty free because it is
much easier to test the products in the labs. It is a more effective and faster way to get the products
to customers. It saves many lives and boosts the sales of brands in every country possible. But for
medince I think they should just limit the amount of animals that are allowed to be used per year
and exceeding the limit shall result in a large fine.
To conclude, I think that animal testing should be banned and I disagree with companies that are
still using animals to test their products. This is a very cruel and inhummaine problem that is
happening and should be

Hester Prynne In The Scarlet Letter
Hester Prynne, a well– known adulterous in the Puritan society of The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel
Hawthorne, is taken to jail and publically shamed for her sin. Unlike some others in her society, her
sin is shone to light due to the fact of her pregnancy, while her husband is nowhere to be found and

Consequently, the ones with authority in the Puritan country are actually trying to rip apart Hester
from her child. However, the way Pearl was produced should not question Hester's ability or role as

T. S. Eliot's Rhapsody On A Windy Night
Everyone knows that life is not always easy and that there a myraid of sad situations that occur
daily. In the poem Rhapsody On a Windy Night by T. S Eliot, the speaker is trying to escape the day
to day issues by taking an all night walk, only to realize that the troubles of the day roll over into
different, but equally as troubling problems. T. S Eliot uses multiple different comparison
tequniques such as similes. It is midnight and the speaker is walking down the street describing the
darkness. Than they start to notice the street lamps: "Every street lamp that I pass/Beats like a
fatalistic drum"( 8–9). Although street lamps do not ususally have a sound to them the writer is
setting the mood for the poem by using a simile that has words that combined give off an ominous
feeling. By using the word "fatalistic" the poem starts to take on a much more dark and creepy
mood. The speaker is trying to show that this is not going to be a positive experience that they are
having with the nighttime and the events that they will encounter. ... Show more content on

personification here is trying to communicate not only the speakers lonliness, but used to narrate

A Clean, Well-Lighted Place. by Ernest Hemingway Essay
"A Clean, Well–Lighted Place" reflect Hemingway's views on the loss of faith and hummanity in the

For the older waitor and the old man, the cafe is their escape from nothingness. The cafe is vibrant
and clean, which has order and clarity. Darkness and chaos are associated with nothingness. The
cafe represents the polar opposite of darkness so it serves as a refuge for those who are trying to
escape emptiness and despair, namely the old man and the older waiter. The older waiter contrasts
the cafe with bars saying that bars are noisy, dark and "unpolished" (143). He complains that he
can't sit at a bar or even "stand before a bar with dignity" (144). The noisy unclean bars do not
extinguish the despair like the cafe does. Hemingway also incorporates a recurring motif of
lonliness throughout the story. The old man is deaf, and his wife has died. He is visibly lonely and
frequents the cafe to escape or to temporarily forget his lonliness. The older waiter never actually
admits that he is lonely, but he is very similar to the old man in that he likes to sit in cafes late at
night (143–44). Both characters find solace in sitting in the cafes because it provides an escaape for
them. They are able to sit in a peaceful setting which for them is better than being alone. The older
waiter tells the younger one that the cafe provides for "all those [people] that need a light for the
night" (144). The older waiter realizes that the cafe gives purpose to the old man and even to
himself. The cafe allows them to momentraily forget about their

What Is The Tone In Killing Chicken
title A sibling is only missed once he or she has moved out. The donut isn't nearly as good when it is
being eaten, as it seems to be once it is gone. Things are easily taken for granted, as seen in
Meredith Hall's "Killing Chickens." Hall incorporates her own personal stories, heartache,
expirences, and family to reveal to the reader the act and effect of underappreciation. Through short
syntax, imagery, and a distant tone, Hall shows how easy it is for things to be taken for granted. The
first technique used to show theme is short syntax. Hall reveals her vulnerability, "I am killing
chickens. It is my birthday. I was awake through the nicght, reckoning with a terrible decision.
When I woke this morning, the next path was finally, achingly clear. After breakfast I saw with my
children, Alex and Benjaminm and struggled to ease the news that their father and I are divorcing.
They were stunned to scilence." Though these short, each senence carries a lot of weight. The author
gives insight about the responsibility she now has, from being totally independent to being a single
mother. Hall uses this short syntax to get her message across, and each sentence has full meaning
and is impactful. "But I am going to do it myself. This is just one little thing in all the things I am
going to have to learn to do alone. I have five more to go" (Hall). The impact of each sentence is
clearly present, because Hall is direct in each sentence, and paragraph. Hall adds her personal

The Theme of Solitude and Lonliness in Mary Shelley's...
Themes are often included in literature in order to provide more meaning and an enhanced
understanding of the text. In the novel, Frankenstein, written by Mary Shelley in 1818, Shelley
conveys the theme of solitude and loneliness through the featured characters and their actions.
Throughout the duration of this novel, we see Shelley using the characters Robert Walton, Victor
Frankenstein and his creation to introduce and emphasise this theme of loneliness and solitude. This
theme originates from Shelley 's personal life and problems with her husband and father, which
carry over into the novel and make it more realistic. During the time Shelley was writing

The creature describes his own desire for a family when he states, "The more I saw of them, the
greater became my desire to claim their protection and kindness; my heart yearns to be known and
loved by these amiable creatures: to see their sweet looks directed towards me with affection, was
the utmost limit of my ambition". However, the rejection from this family is the precipitating event
which leads to it seeking revenge against its creator. The Creature reflects on its loneliness: "Satan
had his companions" (88), "I was alone. I remembered Adam 's supplication to his Creator; but
where was mine? He had abandoned me, and, in the bitterness of my heart, I cursed him" (88) and "I
am an outcast in the world forever" (90). The loneliness of the Creature leads it to unbelievable acts
of violence, the first one being the killing of Frankenstein 's youngest brother William. The Creature
describes its horrible sin in detail and states, "I gazed on my victim, and my heart swelled with
exultation and hellish triumph: clapping my hands, I exclaimed, 'I too can create desolation; my
enemy is not impregnable; this death will carry despair to him, and a thousand other miseries shall
torment and destroy him '" (97).
Captain Robert Walton 's loneliness originates from being a failed poet who wants deeply desires
something great to occur to him. Walton 's loneliness is augmented by the letters he sends to his

How Does Stephen Crane Use Imagery In The Open Boat
In the beginning of The Open Boat, the author Stephen Crane displays a wide variety of imagery.
The first chapter is about several men who get stranded on a deserted island. While their ship is in
the process of crashing into land, Crane describes the cruel waves. "The horizon narrowed and
widened, and dipped and rose, and at all times it's edge was jagged with waves that seemed thrust
up in points like rocks". With much hesitation, Crane subtly foreshadows the future events. Such as
in the quote "'We're not there yet', said the oiler, in the stern". The "oiler" said they aren't there yet
many times throughout chapter one. This is the author casually foreshadowing. Chapter two
expounds some serious events, such as their boat detouring East instead of South into severe waves.
Despite the storm, however, the author exhibits much humor within the characters. The captain
points out to his fellow corsairs that sailing through a storm is much more interesting than just
sailing on a smooth ocean. "Without the storm, where would we be? Wouldn't have a show". As the
storm got worse, the captain jokes once again. "Do you ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

cigars and drink a lot. However he is kind and makes several jokes in the book. The cook doesn't
speak much, but his actions show his personality. He is always very sad and brings out the worst in
every situation. I view the oiler as a very hardworking middle aged man. He is trusted by all the
men in the ship, and he encourages people often. In the book we don't hear much about the
correspondent. He typically kept to himself and expressed no emotion nor

Im Just A Kid Quotes
"I'm Just a Kid" by Simple Plan This song also reflects the theme of lonlyness in this novel.
Lonliness is such a major theme throughout the book and reflects in other pieces of media, because
it's so relatable and possible something everybody would face once in their lives. Everybody can
find a piece of themselves in it. The singer takes on the perspective of a child and tells us even
though he's just a kid, he feels very alone and neglected. With the lyrics "Nobody cares cause I'm

An Analysis on Loneliness Let me tell you this: If you meet a loner, no matter what they tell you, it's
not because they enjoy solitude. It's because they have tried to blend into the world before and
people continue to disappointment them (Picoult). Poignant quote that is a perfect introduction to an
discussion on the loneliness and
Disappointment in life. Loneliness and disappointment are universal struggles suffered by mankind
since the beginning of time. Loneliness and disappointment are so common that every person will
feel their impact at some point in life. As common as they are to the human experience, each
person's experience with loneliness and disappointment is uniquely individual.
For some people, these feelings are brief. For others loneliness and disappointment follow them
Like a shadow, haunting them to the very depths of their soul. Because each of these feelings effect
so many people in such a profound fashion they are often found as recurrent themes throughout
literature and a favorite subject for many authors. One such writer is science fiction author, Ray

Children 's Development As An Integral Part Of A Child...
Play is important in a child's development as it helps in the child's cognitive, emotional, physical
and social development. It is through play that the child is able to interact and engage with the world
around them and discover new things such as the objects they fiddle with and the lessons that they
will soon learn from interacting with toys and people. Under article 31 (leisure, play and culture) of
the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child, play has been recognized as being an
integral part of a child's development, to which "children have the right to relax and play, and to join
in a wide range of cultural, artistic and other recreational activities".

lives such as how their mothers pour tea into teacups for guests or older family members and copies
this action when they line their stuffed toys around them and taking on the motherly role, pouring
"tea" out of teapots for the stuffed toys. Here we see children taking on realistic adult roles that they
have observed which may help them better understand what one of the many motherly roles might
be, and by understanding, they build a new schema in their brain in relation to what a mother is and
in the process, learn something new.
Play can help develop a child's emotional aspect with the use of transitional objects. Transitional
objects such as a child's teddy bear or doll can act as the child's first stepping stone into reality,
which might be too complicated for the child to handle all by himself. Emotionally difficult
situations to a child such as not receiving enough love or craving for more love from adult figures
but yet, unable to gain it, may turn to his teddy bear for comfort and a sense of belonging. In this
case, playing with the teddy bear can downplay the feeling of hurt and help in

Bereft Tone
The somber poem of Bereft reflects on the anxieties after a great loss love. Bereft by Robert Frost is
comparing the narrator's past and present loss and lonliness . The use of different and similar feet
patterns lets readers connect sections of the poem to create a better understanding of the meaning.
The trimeter poem does not have a specific foot throughout the entirety of the poem, but the poem
uses dactyls and trochees in various patterns. By looking at the various similarities between lines
you can gain a deeper understanding of the reflection and questioning of his past love loss. The

These lines, which describe the motion and sound of the storm, are thematically creating conflict
between the author and nature. In the follow phrases, "Leaves...hissed/ Blindly struck at my

rhythmic pattern aligns with that of the last lines of the poem starting with "Word", which are
describing his loneliness. "Word I was in the house alone//Word I was in my life alone, /Word I had
no one left buy God", continue this pattern of very metrical lines of three (13, 15–16. Theses two
sections of lines are not only metrically similar, but thematically. They are no longer questioning the
trials of his loss of love, as he is no longer questioning. The two sections are described through
sound, which is a motif throughout the poem. The storm's description with sound connects with the
other passage of same foot pattern as the narrator believes that someone has spread word of his
loneliness, could this be the nature? These sections are also following the same end rhyme scheme
"hissed/...missed/...tone" and "alone/...alone/...God"(9–11, 13,15–16). The meanings may reflect
each other in these passages, the sense of nature being the one acknowledging the narrator's
loneliness with the storm. It is not clear who knows of his loneliness in the poem, but from the
similarities in theme and meter it can be assumed that the storm is spreading word of his

Of Mice And Men Quotes About Lonliness
No one ever said lonliness is a great passtime, our whole is filled with it. We witness it almost
everyday and are, once in a while, affected by it, but never longer than we can bear. However, many
individuals during the Great Depression lived with this unbearable and inescapable
lonliness, working all day and not having anyone but themselves to care for them or to care for. Jhon
Stienbeck, the author of Of Mice and Men, demonstrates that too much lonliness can cause a person
to live with the unbearable pain of knowing that they only have themselves, shown with Candy,

Chapter Four of John Steinbeck's emotionally moving, but bleak, novel, Of Mice and Men, is

liniment, a medicinal fluid rubbed into the skin to soothe pain or relieve stiffness, to his "crooked"

parallels his emotional, or spiritual pain. More to the point, however, the first five words of the
chapter, "Crooks, the negro stable buck.." (66), characterize the key element driving this characters

So when Griffith compares the story to the nature of human beings, there is no doubt an impression
on Victor's curiosity and sanity:
"Since Victor's story is a story of creation, murder, investigation, and pursuit, Frankenstein is
ultimately a book about our pursuit of self–discovery, about the knowledge of the monster within
us" (Griffith 2).
Griffith further supports the idea of Victor being the problem and his ignorance becoming
increasingly detrimental to his family's health. Victor's actions inevitabely brings death and pain to
his family although the monster is responsible. Victor is the real monster for creating the monster
and negleting his very own creation. Also, after creating the being, he neglects its needs and wants
and runs away from his responsibility as the creator. This quote from Mary Shelley's novel,
Frankenstein, shows that Victor, being too binded in his ambitions, did not think through the process
of creating a human and rushed it creating a bitter and crushed soul:
"Yet you, my creator, detest and spurn me, thy creature" (Shelley 83).
William A. Walling goes on to say, "...still later, as the monster recalls the anguish he has endured
because the life given him has fallen so short of his innate desires, he cries bitterly to Frankenstein"
(Walling1)

own parents do not have a good relationship with him. In chapter seven, Holden talks about his

The Giver By Lois Lowry: An Analysis
Imagine living life with no knowledge of color, memories, death, or even love. Jonas and The Giver

The Giver, by Lois Lowry, the author has the community not have any knowledge of most things

Knowledge has the power to change what anyone likes and dislikes. For example, "'I liked the

Lonliness and Friendship in 'Of Mice And Men'
In terms of emotional stability, there is one thing in life that is really needed, and that is friends.
Without friends, people would suffer from lonliness and solitude. Lonliness leads to low self–
esteem and deprivation. In the novel, Of Mice And Men, by John Steinbeck, the two main themes
are friendship and lonliness.
There are two main characters, George and Lennie. Lennie is a massive man with incredible

reality George did not want these things. He was greatful to have a friend in Lennie, so he would not

about most of the time. He believed that George got upset over simple things such as ketchup. He
too was very thankful to have George to go along with. Although he did not understand the
complexity of things sometimes, he knew that he had a true friend who he trusted wouldnt leave
him.
The friendship between Lennie and George went beyond what was unambiguous, they shared a
common dream, and they never stopped trying to acheive their dream. They dream of a peice of land
of their own. Independence. A couple of acres, a cow, some pigs, and rabbits that Lennie dreams of
tending to. Their dream will later be shattered by fate.
The unlikely destroyer of George and Lennie's dream is a young woman who is married to the boss's

Children Of Lonliness By Anzia Yezierska
The bond between parents and children never deteriorates. Even in times of conflict, there is always
some love and unity between parents and children. However, as time goes on and generations drift
apart, different methods of behavior develop. The tensions between parent and child define the
conflict in Amy Tan's Two Kinds, Anzia Yezierska's Children of Loneliness, and Gish Jen's Who's
Irish. These conflicts explore the cultural gap between the two––the way they act differently, their
behavioral differences, and their different thought processes are all conflicts found in the short
stories. Although there is always love and unity between parents and children, the generational

The daughter could still learn, however, she chooses to disobey her mother and merely pretend to

This indirect rebellion is a central conflict in Two Kinds, both internal, through her thoughts, and
external, through her relationship with her mother. In Children of Loneliness, by Anzia
Yezierska, Rachel struggles with the generational differences to a degree in which she indirectly
dehumanizes her own family. She "[jumped] up from the table in disgust; 'I'll never be able to stand
it here with you people'(Yezierska, 178)." She refers to her own family as "you people" as if they are
a different species or race, even though they are her parents who raised her. These two examples
demonstrate the conflict between parents and children as well as the concept of "non obedience" in
the new generation. However, another factor is parenting style.
The shift in parenting styles through time further differentiates the parents and children with
changes in parenting and punishment. In Gish Jen's Who's Irish, the parenting styles of two
generations clash over their daughter/granddaughter, Sophie. Two perspectives fight over how

Thus, the U.S became referred to as "The Melting Pot". With immigrants, come their children, and
their children to come, and this can sometimes prove to be a problem. Children learn based on their
surroundings, and because the immigrant parents and children grow up in different places, the
conflicting ideals and habits of the two are inevitable. Although the relationship between parents
and children is seen as the epitome of love and understanding, the disappointment ... Show more

Despite the barrier not being one of speaking language, it does become a barrier between the
language of ideals and culture. The parents' religious practices and habits do not fit what the
daughter sees as the template of success and fitting in, which can also be referred to as, in her mind,
Americanized. Moving to America teaches the child a new native language, whether it be speaking
or not, which augments the gap of understanding between the children and their parents. Despite the
fact who the bond between parents and children is usually undeniable and superlative, the inability
to reach expectations, the shift in priority as children grow in a different era, and the differing
languages of parent and child show that immigrant parents and their children are not given the
easiest circumstances to formulate the stereotypical love of parent and child. America conditions the
child to be different than the parents, because the countries of childhood are different. The culture
that the child sees on a daily basis, their peers, and their opinions shift completely with the move to
America. That being said, the parents see this change, and they become discouraged because the
child does not exemplify the family's proud origin

Criteria For Social Anxiety

  • 1. Criteria For Social Anxiety I would ask Allie to rate her anxiety on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being no anxiety and 10 being a panic attack. Allie meets the DSM 5 2013 Criteria for Social Anxiety; therefore, it cannot be ruled out at this time. The clinical picture portrays an adolescent female that has few friends, has difficulty participating in classroom activities, persistent fear, especially when called upon to answer a question or work in a group. She avoids social interaction where she may have to perform in front of others. Allie's social impairment is associated with a dysphoric mood, she often feels uneasy and sad. Allie's symptoms of anxiety began around the age 9 or 10 due to being bullied in school and has progressively worsened over the last 4 to 5 years. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Allie can identify the cause of her stress} The feared situations are avoided or else are endured with intense anxiety and distress. The avoidance, anxious anticipation, or distress in the feared social or performance situation(s) interferes significantly with the person's normal routine, (academic) functioning, or social activities or relationships, or there is marked distress about having the phobia. Allie is missing school. The fear, anxiety, or avoidance is persistent, typically lasting 6 or more months. The fear or avoidance is not due to direct physiological effects of a substance (e.g., drugs, medications) or a general medical condition not better accounted for by another mental disorder (American Psychiatric Association 2013). Rule Out Depression Key questions to rule out depression would include To Rate depression on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being no anxiety and 10 being the worst depression you ever experienced. What are your symptoms? How long have you had these symptoms? How severe are the symptoms? Have you had these symptoms before? Were you treated for depression? If so, what treatments have you had, and which worked best? Do you use drugs or drink alcohol? Have you thought about death or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. What Are The Obstacles In The Odyssey In the stories The Odyssey, Divergent, and Moana, each character must face an obstacle that concerns them of making a decision which affects their own family, in order to reach their goal. In The Odyssey, Odysseus left his wife, Penelope for twenty years. Through those twenty years, Odysseus was playing pattycake with some of the goddesses that he was encountered with. While Penelope was at home, waiting for him and staying loyal to their marriage. She was even surrounded by a bunch of suitors who wanted to marry her since they all thought Odysseus was never coming back. Penelope stayed loyal and told the suitors, "Young men, my suitors, now my lord is dead, let me finish my weaving before I marry, or else my thread will have been spun in vain...So every day she wove on the great loom–but every night by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this sentence Penelope was trying to delay the time that the suitors would give her because she still had faith in Odysseus's returning. Even though Penelope was tempted by many men, she stayed faithful to Odysseus which was a hard obstacle for her to go through. She didn't have her husband for twenty years and she even had a son whom she had to raise by herself. She was able to overcome the obstacle of losing family all by herself. Secondly, in Moana, Moana's father was very strict about her getting into a boat in the ocean or even having her be by the ocean. He constantely told her that it was too dangerous to go out beyond the reef. As Moana's father tried, what seemed like everday, to stop her from going into the ocean, he knew that for her and for the island, he needed to let her go beyond the reef. He needed to overcome the obstacle of letting his daughter go and being on her own. From him letting his daughter go, she was able to restore the heart of Te Fiti and save her home. Lastly in Divergent, as Tris joins a new faction, leaving her family behind, she definitely feels lonely and doesn't really know if she made the right ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Middle School Intervention Paper Adolescents who feel more lonely are more likely they to be depressed, anxious and less likely to take social risks (Moore & Schultz, 1983, p. 99). Similarly, "loneliness and depressive symptoms influenced one another bidirectionally from mid to late adolescence, with the direction from loneliness to depressive symptoms being stronger than the reversed direction" (Vanhalst, Klimstra, Luyckx, Scholte, Engels, & Goossens, 2012, p. 782). Thus, our intervention aims to reduce these feelings among middle school students. In turn, this goal is worthy from a sociatel perspective, as reducing feelings of loneliness will have a positive effect on the teenagers' school performance, their overall productivity as well as their reported life satisfaction (Trzesniewski, Donnellan, Moffitt, Robins, Poulton ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Additionally, acts of solitary could be oriented towards including all students in class. For example, a rewarded act could be to invite a fellow student to sit together at lunch time, or to help one another in a class assignment. This way, we will reduce feeling of loneliness without approaching the lonely student explicitly but by extending the rates of in class solidarity as a whole. Furthermore, we base the method of intervention on the idea of conditional cooperation saying that people act more solitary when other do the same (Fischbacher, Gächter & Fehr, 2001, p. 397). To evaluate effectiveness, before starting the intervention, we will ask all the student in class to answer a scale measuring loneliness so we can measure the effect of the intervention after a year and see if the participants show reduced lonliness when answering the scale again (De Jong–Gierveld & Kamphuls, ... She has no future as she is stuck with her former husband (Curley) who hates her leaving his sight, she has no friends as she is the only woman on the ranch and Curley will not allow her socializ with the men because he feels that they would steel her, and she has no respect from anyone on the ranch because why should they; She gets the men in trouble just by looking at them because well lets face it shes made out to be a "whore" who is stunningly beautiful, why wouldnt you look; she doesn't even withhold a name (which isnt even mentioned within the story) She is just known as Curleys wife because she is his possesion, his property. Such portrayal of bear like activities would be the crusing and smashing of Curley's hand.Curley's small masculine hands are no match for Lennie's solid, strong, bear–like paws thus giving us the result of Curleys puvled hand. Lennie is an extremely sensitive boy who watches over his best friend and lover, to add he has an etremely terrible temper. He gets uncannily hyped up just thinking about having a pet rabbit or puppy, not to mention being aloud to have a one. Yet Lennie is incredibly strong and cannot comprehend this. He doesnt perceive to be scary or frightening to anyone except for Curley. Curley despises Lennie, in light of the fact that he couldn't care less for tremendous huge men and really makes a joke of him because of his mental capacity and simple needs. Such bear– like expressions are:"Dragging his feet a little as a bear would drag his paws". Yet this isn't the only creature Lennie is implied to be, other cases include, being solid as a bull. • 5. Pablo Neruda Literary Devices There are several Literary devices that Pablo Neruda utilizes within his poetry. These Literary devices include the Use of Metaphors and Similes, along with the utilization of Imagery within almost every Neruda poem. Overall these devices play a huge role on conveying what Neruda is attempting to describe to per se a reader, so that they can feel or compare the action to common sensations received by senses. PAblio Neruda's "Entrance into Wood" Shares that of Auditorial imagry as several stanzas cover silence and tactile images describing the feel of the enviroment. "I pass among the damp uprooted fibers to the live heart of matter and silence. ...with your pale dead swords, with your gathered hearts, with your silent horde." Within the poem "Entrance into Wood", this Imagery is crucial towards describing the emotions, and giving the reader an accurate description of the situation. A silent horde isnt like a regular horde in which there is excessive noise, but with silence helping decribing the character's appeal to a funeral. • 7. A Short Story : A Story Of A Story The room was painted a dazzling navy blue sky, with shady hills and stars twinkling above the light house. Just looking at it made Julia yawn, apart from her busy day at work. "Have a good day," Dr. Julia whispered tiredly to her last patient as they left the vaccine room. Dragging her feet, she slowly gathered her belongings and put them in a bag(4). As Julia strolled to the far back of the room to switch off the lights something shiny caught her eye. She reached to the patient bed, and picked up the glossy object. It was a gold coated ring with a shiny clear stone that glistened in the bright white light. "Whatever," Julia thought as she examined the ring, "I'll just keep it." She slipped the small object into her pocket. A chill went down her spine. "Grabbed my stuff, switched off the lights, do I need to do anything else? Yep...sleep!" Julia thought to herself. She waved to the doctors on her way out of the hospital.. She opened the door to her house and her mom and dad rushed to her. "How was your day honey?" they asked. Exhausted, Julia replied, "It was fine, but I better sleep now."(4) She tiptoed up the stairs and creaked open the door. The long day ended, her body restless and sour, Julia's room welcomed her with a lavender scent drifting from the air freshner by her dresser(8). • 11. Donald Trump's Essay: The Isolation Of America The isolation of America in relation to other nations will handicap the citizens of our country; however, President Donald Trump suggests this isolation would "make America great again". Trump first supports this idea by informing the American people what has taken place in this country due to our interventions in other nations. He notes that "for many decades, we've enriched foreign industry at the expense of American industry; subsidized the armies of other countries while allowing for the very sad depletion of our military ; we've defended other nation's borders while refusing to defend our own; and spent trillions of dollars overseas while America's infrastructure has fallen into disrepair and decay". We, as the American people have the luxury to have a voice and the opportunity to unite for numerous reasons, one being to chose who governs our state. A healthy and effecient Democracy is when people organize for a joint purpose. Alexis De Tocqueville supports this in his selection of Democracy of America, "but among democratic peoples all the citizens are independent and weak [...] they would all therefore find themselves helpless if they did not learn to help each other voluntarily" (Davis & Lynn p. 57). In relation to President Trump's inaguaral address, he identifies the power of our Democracy suggesting "we must speak our minds openly, debate our dissagreements honestly, but always pursue solidarity. When America is united, America is totally unstoppable". Americans ability to unite in a civilized manner promotes a supreme country. This is the admirable aspect of America's Democracy; however, concerns with Democracy in America can arise when the chosen leadership creates moral conflict among the people. A part of Trump's speech reflects such conflict when he says, "we will reiforce old alliances and form new ones––and unite the civilized world against radical Islamic terrorism, which we will eradicate completely from the face of the Earth". He is foreshadowing a war that is not neccessarily in the best interest of mankind and is using the unity of America to implement such warfare. Though, Tocquville defnitely mentioned in Davis and Lynn how "In democratic countries only the governing power is naturally in a position so to act, but it is easy to see that its action is always inadequate and often dangerous" (p. 56). At their last fateful stop, they meet a variety of interesting yet very long characters. The first character we meet is other than Lennie and George is Candy. Candy has no family (as he told us when George was telling him about "the place".) Curley is constantly looking for his wife and always wanting to fight, this causes her to dislike being on the ranch and having Curley as a husband. She is treated with sexism because when she's around Curley thinks something's going on , this causes no one to want her around. She tells Lennie at the end of the book that she doesn't even like Curley. The last character that I am writing about is Crooks. Crooks is the old black man at the ranch which only few appreciate. The story ends on a surprising note, but one for which the reader is not totally unprepared. Faulkner very cleverly uses changing pictures of Miss Emily's physical state to give the reader a clue as to what is transpiring inside her. The picture or "tableau" of Emily in her childhood gives us our first clue into her strange personality. Here she is pictured as "thinner than usual, with cold, haughty black eyes in a face the flesh of which was strained across the temples and about the eyesockets . . ." The description somewhat reminds us of a sinister–looking skeleton, and somehow, we just know she is up to no good when she purchases the arsenic from the druggist. We know life is ebbing when we next see Miss Emily, but we can tell that she is stubbornly hanging on. "She had grown fat and her hair was turning gray." Faulkner goes into great detail in describing hair. I believe hair is a symbol not only of youth and of life, but also of strength. In describing her hair as "vigorous iron–gray, like the hair of an active man," he alludes to her tenacity to hang on to her ways. The older waiter contrasts the cafe with bars saying that bars are noisy, dark and "unpolished" (143). He complains that he can't sit at a bar or even "stand before a bar with dignity" (144). The noisy unclean bars do not extinguish the despair like the cafe does. Hemingway also incorporates a recurring motif of lonliness throughout the story. The old man is deaf, and his wife has died. Another part of the novella Crooks shows lonliness is ,'' long as you wont get out and leave me alone, you might as well set down.'' this quote indicates that Crooks is aloof and unfriendly to white men but, enjoys everyones company. That is because he is left all alone and never talked to, so he finds great pleassure in the smallest interaction with others. Crooks tries to hide this but he cannot because he is lonely some times he can not even bear it. When Saba and Emmi are captured by Rooster and Miz they are taken to Hopetown so that they can make Saba fight in the Cage. • 33. Essay on Crooks' Transformation in John Steninbeck's Of... Chapter Four of John Steinbeck's emotionally moving, but bleak, novel, Of Mice and Men, is devoted to the character of Crooks. The chapter begins and ends with this recluse character applying liniment, a medicinal fluid rubbed into the skin to soothe pain or relieve stiffness, to his "crooked" back. One of the first impressions given to readers is of his physical pain– which presumable parallels his emotional, or spiritual pain. More to the point, however, the first five words of the chapter, "Crooks, the negro stable buck.." (66), characterize the key element driving this characters particular shade of lonliness. For in contrast to the lonliness of Candy or of Curly's wife, Crooks is devided from the world by his race. So, on one level, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Of coarse, the "opening" is symbolic not only of the physical, but of the emotional gaps in Crooks. Lennie Small, the strong but mentally challenged laborer, is often the only character that can fill the void for others, such as his friend, George. It is only someone like Lennie that can earnestly ask Crooks why he is not wanted in the bunk house, which Crooks explains is "Cause I'm Black. They play cards in there, but I can't play because I'm black. They say I stink. Well, I tell you, you all of you stink to me" (68). Clearly, he is bitter towards his oppressors. Lennie continues to remain in the annoyed prescence of Crooks explaining George and Lennie's plan to "get a little place an' live on the fatta the lan' (69). At this point, Crooks becomes the oppressor, and the weak revenges himself by pickig on the weaker, and questions whether George, Lennie's friend and guardian, will come back from a night out with the boys. The childlike mind but giant strength of Lennie is troubled to the point of anger. Once Crooks ends his torture because " he saw the danger as it approached him," Crookes begins his speech about of his hopless lonliness: Crooks said gently, "Maybe you can see now. You got George. You know he's gin' to come back. Spose you ddin't have nobody. S'pose you couldn't go into the bunk house and play rummy `cause you was black. How'd yo like that? Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So when Griffith compares the story to the nature of human beings, there is no doubt an impression on Victor's curiosity and sanity: "Since Victor's story is a story of creation, murder, investigation, and pursuit, Frankenstein is ultimately a book about our pursuit of self–discovery, about the knowledge of the monster within us" (Griffith 2). Griffith further supports the idea of Victor being the problem and his ignorance becoming increasingly detrimental to his family's health. Victor's actions inevitabely brings death and pain to his family although the monster is responsible. Victor is the real monster for creating the monster and negleting his very own creation. Also, after creating the being, he neglects its needs and wants and runs away from his responsibility as the creator. This quote from Mary Shelley's novel, Frankenstein, shows that Victor, being too binded in his ambitions, did not think through the process of creating a human and rushed it creating a bitter and crushed soul: "Yet you, my creator, detest and spurn me, thy creature" (Shelley 83). William A. Walling goes on to say, "...still later, as the monster recalls the anguish he has endured because the life given him has fallen so short of his innate desires, he cries bitterly to Frankenstein" (Walling1) When Frankenstein created the monster, he created a living, breathing soul that could now ... In chapter seven, Holden talks about his mother buying him hockey skates instead of racing skates. "She bought me the wrong kind of skates–I wanted racing skates and she bought hockey–but it made me sad anyway." (pg. 52) Holden's present from his mother symbolzes she does not even know her own chld well enough to know his interests. Besides his absense of friends and distant relationship with his parents, Holden's biggest sense of lonliness comes from the death of his younger brother, Allie. • 36. The Giver By Lois Lowry: An Analysis Imagine living life with no knowledge of color, memories, death, or even love. Jonas and The Giver are the only two people who have feelings and know of things no one else knows about. In the book, The Giver, by Lois Lowry, the author has the community not have any knowledge of most things that exist. Knowledge has the power to change anything. Knowledge has the power to change what anyone likes and dislikes. For example, "'I liked the feeling of love,' said Jonas" (84). Jonas likes Fiona, but once he stops taking the pills and the Giver gives him memories, Jonas feels love. Jonas could not stop thinking about Fiona. To Fiona, it was a new and confusing feeling, but he knew she enjoyed it. Jonas tried to explain the memories and feelings with his family, but they just didn't understand. "Jonas stared at them. Meaningless? He had never before felt anything as meaningful as the memory" (122). No one knows of the memories except the Giver and the Receiver. When Jonas tries to explain a memory he had or how he feels about something, nobody understands him and thinks everything he says is meaningless and different. ... • 38. Children Of Lonliness By Anzia Yezierska The bond between parents and children never deteriorates. Even in times of conflict, there is always some love and unity between parents and children. However, as time goes on and generations drift apart, different methods of behavior develop. The tensions between parent and child define the conflict in Amy Tan's Two Kinds, Anzia Yezierska's Children of Loneliness, and Gish Jen's Who's Irish. These conflicts explore the cultural gap between the two––the way they act differently, their behavioral differences, and their different thought processes are all conflicts found in the short stories. Although there is always love and unity between parents and children, the generational divide between parents and children is shown through the concept of "non obedience," the ... This indirect rebellion is a central conflict in Two Kinds, both internal, through her thoughts, and external, through her relationship with her mother. In Children of Loneliness, by Anzia Yezierska, Rachel struggles with the generational differences to a degree in which she indirectly dehumanizes her own family. She "[jumped] up from the table in disgust; 'I'll never be able to stand it here with you people'(Yezierska, 178)." She refers to her own family as "you people" as if they are a different species or race, even though they are her parents who raised her. These two examples demonstrate the conflict between parents and children as well as the concept of "non obedience" in the new generation. However, another factor is parenting style. The shift in parenting styles through time further differentiates the parents and children with changes in parenting and punishment. In Gish Jen's Who's Irish, the parenting styles of two generations clash over their daughter/granddaughter, Sophie. Two perspectives fight over how ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Melting Pot: Immigrant Parents And Children During the influx of immigrants into the United States during the 70's and 80's, the country saw many diverse and different people become citizens of their beloved country. Many people from all over the world came to American to escape persecution, and to find the opportunity of a lifetime. Thus, the U.S became referred to as "The Melting Pot". With immigrants, come their children, and their children to come, and this can sometimes prove to be a problem. The parents' religious practices and habits do not fit what the daughter sees as the template of success and fitting in, which can also be referred to as, in her mind, Americanized. Moving to America teaches the child a new native language, whether it be speaking or not, which augments the gap of understanding between the children and their parents. Despite the fact who the bond between parents and children is usually undeniable and superlative, the inability to reach expectations, the shift in priority as children grow in a different era, and the differing languages of parent and child show that immigrant parents and their children are not given the easiest circumstances to formulate the stereotypical love of parent and child. America conditions the child to be different than the parents, because the countries of childhood are different. The culture that the child sees on a daily basis, their peers, and their opinions shift completely with the move to America. That being said, the parents see this change, and they become discouraged because the child does not exemplify the family's proud origin ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
