Durkhiem stated that school serves a function in a complex industrial society that the family or peer
group can't. Children are taught to get along with those who are neither their kin nor friend.
Durkhiem saw schools as society in miniature. Durkhiem also argued that school rules should be
enforced and punishment which should reflect the seriousness of the damage done to the social

Social Inequalities In Education: A Personal Statement
I first noticed inequalities in the school system when attending public schools, first in Canada and
later in Arizona. Some of my friends took care of younger siblings, did not have access to
computers, or worked part–time. Yet, these students were expected to attend school regularly,
maintain good grades, and participate in extracurricular activities if they wanted to apply to
university. At that time, I lacked the theoretical lenses to connect personal problems and social
issues, but I had an incipient interest in understanding the causes and consequences of educational
inequalities. Fast forward four years, and now I am a Sociology major with two minors in Spatial
Studies and Education and Society, president and founder of the undergraduate Sociology club at the
University of Southern California, and a student researcher in an externally funded research project
on school transfer policies and social inequalities.

and spatial studies, I have gained research skills and conceptual frameworks that have helped me in

Functionalists and positivists believe that the sociologist's role is to provide the state with objective
