Silence Shusak Endo Analysis
Everyone believes in something or someone to a certain extent. That extent is revealed when
consequences are laid out on the table. In the intriguing novel Silence, by Shusaku Endo, the
pathway of the Jesuit priest, Sebastian Rodriguez, is followed as he embarks to Japan during the
height of the country's persecution of Christians in the 1600s to perform missionary work. One of
his goals for this trip was to find out why one of his old teachers renounced their faith after being
captured and tortured. However, as time would tell, Rodrigues found himself in a position of torture
where he too had to decide whether or not he would renounce his faith by stepping on the fumie in
front of the Japanese men. After facing a mental battle within himself, ... Show more content on

I am glad that this historical message was delivered in this particular form because it seems to me
that most history classes only involve books that are filled with factual events or backgrounds on
people. Even though the story of Rodrigues is full of details on his life, by reading it in the form of a
novel that is comprised of diary entries and other writings, makes the information easier for me to
interpret. I find it difficult to read through textbooks, but when it comes to stories, I think they are
much more enjoyable. In addition, novels of history make it easier for me to imagine and picture
what individuals were going through because I am able to become attached to the characters
involved. With that in mind, when Rodrigues was faced with the choice of whether or not to step on
the fumie, I already knew in my head what I wanted him to do because I was emotionally attached.
Throughout the entire novel, I read about the trials that Rodrigues faced in order to perform his
missionary work. After picturing him fighting through the hardships, I desperately wanted to see
him continue to stand up against the Japanese oppression. So when he made the decision to step on
the fumie, I was filled with disappointment. As a result of this, I found the problem to be with
Rodrigues himself for making the wrong

Father Rodrigue In Silence
In Silence, a Portuguese missionary named Father Rodrigues travels to Japan in an effort to convert
the Japanese to Christianity. He also hopes to find out the truth behind rumors that one of his old
teachers, Father Ferreira, had become apostate during his time in Japan. While on his expedition,
Father Rodrigues sees and experiences the torture that Inoue, the magistrate of Chikugo, inflicts on
followers of the Christian faith. However, he allows Japanese Christians to be tortured and killed
because of his refusal to apostatize, which reveals that he may not be as selfless as he appears
outwardly. The first time the Rodrigues sees for himself how Christianity is punished in Japan is
when Mokichi and Ichizo, two villagers who helped hide him in their town, are tied to two trees that
have been made into huge stakes and set up in the ocean. They are left there to die a slow and
painful death. Even after seeing the two men undergo this suffering, Rodrigues continues traveling
throughout the country, essentially endangering the lives of anyone who is willing to help him. ...

Many of Rodrigues's actions are both cowardly and selfish. When he arrives in Japan, he is traveling
with Father Garrpe, a friend and colleague. Rodrigues actually watches Garrpe sacrifice his own life
while attempting to save Japanese that are being put to death, yet does nothing to help. The closest
Rodrigues comes to embodying Christian values during that particular situation is in this quote,
where he at least acknowledges that his actions aren't in line with what he preaches: "His pity for
them had been overwhelming, but pity was not action. It was not love. Pity, like passion, was no
more than a kind of instinct" (Endo

Uniformity Vs Conformity
Conformity in the land of the free
Uniformity. Conformity. These words have negative connotations in the minds of many Americans.
However, many believe that the United States is keeping the standard in society of uniformity and
conformity. America's society is based on the model of uniformity and conformity because of
minorities not fully being accepted and other citizens not being accepting of other culture.
First, minorities are often pushed to the side by the majority of American because of some believing
the minorities are not as important. For instance, a bilingual speaker Rodrigues talks about his
childhood and how he believed that he did not fully fit in until he conformed into what the rest of
America wanted him to be. This can be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The United States of America today is keeping the standard of uniformity and conformity because of
not accepting minorities as respected people in the country.
Secondly, immigrants from many different parts of the world who have come to America have felt
that their cultures have been ridiculed and thus forces them to conform and become uniform. For
example, the excerpt of "A Raisin in the Sun", depicts an African woman who is made fun of by a
white person who doesn't fully understand her cultural clothing. This can be clearly seen when
George states, "Let's face is baby, your heritage is nothing but a bunch of raggedy assed spirituals
and some grass huts!" (Source 4). George has no respect for Beneatha's culture and does not try to
understand where she is coming from. This a perfect example of how the majority will force
minorities to leave their culture behind and conform the society's standard of uniformity. Beneatha
responds to his belittling comment by saying, "You are standing there in your splendid ignorance
talking about people were the first to smelt iron on the fact of the earth!" (Source 4). She reacted in
this way because he is not only insulting her culture but her as a person. George's ignorant comment
and Beneatha's retaliation shows that America's modern–day society is not moving towards diversity
and individuality but rather moving backward into uniformity and conformity.

Operator Implements Of Safety Management System
(Starke, Jason, 2012). ICAO states that operator implements of safety management system as a
minimum:
a. Identifies safety hazards
b. Ensures that remedial action necessary to maintain an acceptable level of safety is implemented
c. Provides for continues monitoring and regular assessment of the safety level achieved
d. Aims to make continuous improvement in the overall level of safety
ICAO standards state that General Aviation (GA) operators must establish and maintain an SMS
"appropriate to the size and complexity of the operation" (Starke, Jason, 2012). The SMS also
provides FAA a means of assessing an organization's safety management capability. The main idea
of an SMS is to incorporate control of risk into normal day–to–day ... Show more content on

This first component of SMS has five elements: management commitment and responsibility, safety
accountabilities, appointment of key safety personnel, coordination of emergency response planning
and SMS documentation (Rodrigues & Cusick, 2011). The SMS adds emphasis on management
control, therefore, a SMS would need an ideal safety culture in place. A safety culture can be
considered the core that is critical to the ongoing success of an SMS. Management should take a
principal role in creating a safety culture within their organization, so that SMS becomes an
essential part of the management and work practices of the organization (Rodrigues & Cusick,
2011). In an effort for management to set safety objectives and goals and define processes and
procedures a safety policy must first be implemented. A safety policy should include the following:
a. A safety policy shall reflect organizational commitments regarding safety
b. A clear statement about the provision of the necessary resources for the implementation of the
safety policy
c. Safety reporting procedures
d. The condition under which disciplinary action would not apply
e. Indicate which types of operational behaviors or unacceptable
Because it is through management that employees are hired, fired and disciplined by, the safety
policy should be not only developed by management, but also be communicated to all employees

Analysis: Landing Of The Rodrigue Brothers
George Rodrigue is the artist I chose to research on because of his very bland unique of art work.
George Rodrigue was born in the city of New Iberia on March 13, 1944– December 14, 2013.
Mr.Rodrigue attended an all–male high school named Brothers of the Christian Schools. He started
painting small landscape portraits and gradually increased to family gatherings. He studied art at
University of Southwestern Louisiana which is known to us today as University of Louisiana at
Lafayette. Also, he attended the Art Center College of Design in California. When Rodrigue
returned back home in the late 1960s he was known for his creativity in the Cajun arts. This painting

This painting looks very basic and unusual. I would consider this to be a very unidentified portrait of
a dog embracing the Cajun cultures. This painting shows me that it's okay to be unique and not like
everyone else. The dog wearing a tie is not something you see on a daily basis which shows that
being different is absolutely fine. Yes, this form does reflect the art because the meaning of this
painting is very straight to the point and justified. The dog is sitting very still with a distinguished
face almost as to like your different why can't I be. The artist emphasized the tie by painting bright
yellow polka dots. By creating the bright yellow polka dots, it will pop out to people viewing the
painting first. Majority of Rodrigue`s work is associated with the Cajun lifestyle. In all of his
painting you can see little details of Cajun cultures. The artist doesn't really use much technique
besides shading, lines, and a variety of colors. The blue dog that Rodrigue is famous for he uses a
very distinct style of shading just enough to give some characteristics of the dog features. Lines are
used to create the defined shapes. Rodrigue doesn't use a wide variety of colors. Most of his
creations he uses very vibrant colors. The main source of inspiration is based off f the Cajun

Sacrificity And Spirituality InThe Butterfly Mosque, And...
In a spiritual journey, often times it is necessary to put oneself at risk. Physical, emotional or
psychological harm can easily befall someone on their travels from Booth's Badland to Homeland.
One's willingness to accept the burden of suffering, begrudgingly or otherwise, resonates throughout
the toils of a spiritual traveller in many forms. Sacrificing oneself or aspects thereof in the pursuit or
support of one's spirituality often presents challenges unique to the journey itself; as Heraclitus of
Ephesus said, "You could not step twice into the same river; for other waters are ever flowing on to
you." In The Butterfly Mosque by G. Willow Wilson and the film Silence, directed by Martin
Scorsese, we see two different perspectives on the notion of self–sacrifice in search of spiritual
growth and confirmation. While Willow Wilson relinquishes everything she knows in search of a
new world that may open her eyes farther than the Western world ever could, the travels of
Sebastião Rodrigues begin to strengthen his resolve in God, which would be dashed and battered
against the Kyushan shores. Both individuals will be shown to demonstrate the impact acts of self–
sacrifice have on ones spirituality, for better or for worse; whether it is one's intent to alter their
entire system of belief or not, the costs that spirituality extolls from a person can have a wide range
of unintended effects. Faith can itself be subject to sacrificial acts; in order to save something else,
one might

Religion In The Film Silence
The film, Silence, has a myriad of characters that are on a spectrum of religious belief. There are
certain characters that show an immense devotion to their faith, willing to risk their life and the lives
of others to profess their fidelity to God. Although this film highlights two Jesuit priests, Father
Sebastian Rodrigues and Father Francisco Garupe, there is an interesting contrasting devotion from
the Inquisition to Buddhism. They have no tolerance for Christianity and believe it to be a cancer
that must be cut from Japan. The priests go to great lengths to find a third priest, Father Cristovao
Ferreira, who has gone missing while operating as a missionary. Father Ferreira ends up getting
captured, recants his faith, and sides with the Inquisition, helping them investigate objects hidden as
Christian relics. There are many applicable ideas relating to religious fundamentalism within the
film.
Sigmund Freud and William James differ on the explanation of religious experience. James focuses
on religion as feelings and experiences of an individual. For the most part the religious experience is
felt instead of a concept. James also believes that religion is not linear or homogenous. There are
different perceptions or involvement one has with their faith. A great example of contrasting persons
within their religious experiences in the film, Silence, is Father Rodrigues and Yosulu Kubozuka
(Kichijiro). The viewer would most likely consider Father Rodrigues as the main

Selma Rodrigues Brown : A Lifetime Resident Of Baltimore
Selma Rodrigues–Brown was a lifetime resident of Baltimore. She grew up in what she called the
hood. She was all of five feet two inches tall, black nappy hair, and her complexion was very dark
and she was mean as hell. She was the leader of Uptown Crips. It was highly unusual to have a
woman in that leadership spot. At thirty–two years of age, she had fought and killed her way to the
top, she had the members' respect, only to the point where they all knew she would have them killed
in a heartbeat. For Selma the event was a blessing sent by God for her specifically. She was able to
consolidate her power over the city, by brute force, within three months after the event. Selma was
successful in creating a mega–alliance with the rest of the gangs in the city, with her at the top. Prior
to the event Law Enforcement estimated there were close to ten thousand gang members in all of
Baltimore. The number was much higher now. The citizens of Baltimore had to commit to a gang, or
leave town and die–those were their only choices. Now it was closer to twenty–five thousand;
however, prior to the event Baltimore had a population of over six hundred thousand people. The
twenty–five thousand were the number of soldiers that were counted to help fight and defend the
city, if it ever came to that. Everyone else in the city was considered an affiliate of the gang. The
population of Baltimore now, a year later, was closer to eighty–seven thousand. The first months of

The Scholarship Boy By Richard Rodriguez
Through the narrative "The Scholarship Boy" I find few turning points that I notice a shift in the
demeanor of Richard Rodriguez as well as how I perceive the story. First of all, it is made apparent
to me that people acknowledge him for his successes by making remarks such as, "Your parents
must be proud" or "How did you manage it? According to the opening paragraphs Rodriguez is seen
as a model student. Although this may be true, the first turning point I find suggests otherwise as
Rodriguez conveys, "For although I was a very good student, I was also a very bad student...Always
successful, always unconfident. Exhilarated by my process. Sad." This quote changed my
perspective of Rodriguez because of the negative emotion he expresses toward his family. By the
same token, I recall my sister being an outstanding achiever throughout school, yet, she was
similarly depressed as well as annoyed towards me and the rest of our family. This flashback
assisted me in relating to Rodriguez's emotions towards his successes. In the same fashion, I am
supplied a grasp of his shift in tone and direction in the narrative. The second turning point is like a
surge of hope amongst the sadness. We are brought a new perspective of the scholarship boy from
his reading of the book "The Uses of Literacy". Rodriguez learns he is not alone in his feelings, "For
the first time I realized that there were other students like me, and so I was able to frame the
meaning of my academic success, its

A Brief Note On The Aviation Safety Of Aviation Accidents
According to Rodrigues and Cusick (2012) humans are accountable for approximately 70–80% of
aviation accidents (p.156). A majority of these are caused by the different variables associated with
human performance. Psychological factors have a key role in a pilot's everyday responsibility. Some
of these traits include: perception, memory, attitude, judgment and decision making, as well as ego
(Rodrigues & Cusick, 2012, p. 158–160). These qualities can have drastic effects in commercial
aviation if they are not recognized and adjusted accordingly. In this paper I will respond to some
questions that are raised in aviation safety: 1.) Can we stop the amount of human errors in aviation?
2.) Is training the problem? 3.) What is being done to slow down the number of errors/accidents? If
we can find the answers to these questions, then I believe it is possible to limit and slow down the
number of human errors in aviation, thusly slowing the number of accidents and lives lost due to
human performance. Can We Stop the Amount of Human Errors? The reality of the situation is no.
Humans are different and that is what makes us unique. We will always make mistakes and you
cannot stop them. We all have different perceptions, memory capacities, attitudes, decision making
skills, and egos. These qualities can be good or bad. Perception is a very important aspect in
aviation. That is why pilots are instructed to read back to ATC (Air Traffic Control) in order for
them to know that they

Theme Of Silence
The book Silence, by Shusako Endo follows a theme of a silent God who accompanies a believer in
adversity. The main character of the book is Sebastian Rodrigues. It tells of Sebastian Rodrigues'
arduous journey halfway around the world to Japan in the 1630s, in order to track down a rumor that
his mentor Father Ferreira had abandoned his faith, at a time where the Japanese leaders were
extremely hostile to foreigners and Christianity and also suspicious of their intentions. He travels
with two other missionaries but one of them falls sick whilst travelling and is deemed unfit to carry
on to accompany him. The book is not fast paced, but immensely character driven. For example, we
see the growth of Sebastian Rodrigues as a priest. At one point he labels Kichijiro a coward. "Was it
possible that he was of our faith – this wretch." Here we see him being judgmental. However, later
in the novel we see him for the first time–sharing a proper ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This can be echoed through what Kichijiro says " If I was born in another time, I would have been a

an allegory where Inoue deems Japan unfit for Christianity and encourages him to apostatize, " I do
not view Christianity as an evil religion", Inoue says. Furthermore, when Rodrigues encounters
Ferreira he echoes the thoughts of Inoue, he says " I have labored in this mission for twenty years ...
our religion does not take root in this country", Kichijiro also refers to himself as a "weak shoot"
that "will never grow no matter what you do". His resolve begins to fade due to the treatment he
receives whilst in captivity, ironically it is when he is well treated that he feels the most vulnerable

Analysis Of The Book ' Silence, Sh Ū Saku End Ā ' By ' The...
Within the first few pages of the novel, Silence, Shūsaku Endō's throws his readers head on to the
cruelty and darkness that the Christians had faced in 17th century feudal Japan. Father Rodrigues, a
Jesuit priest sent to covert the Japanese to the Christian faith, he described the "immersion in the
hell of boiling water at Unzen." the five of priests and two women went through to give up their
faith. However, with all the tortures methods used and being immersed in the boil water and being in
prison, they still didn't give up. It leaves the reader, such as my shudder and hard to contemplate
what I have just read. Although disturbing, the onslaught of Christian persecution has been ongoing
for thousands of years. This historical fiction novel follows the journey of three Jesuit priests from
Portugal to investigate the actions that led one of their own superiors to abandon his faith and
defaced the image of the church while also carrying out the covert Christian missions in the country.
However, when they land in Maco, Father Valignano informs them that Inoue, the governor of
Chikugo, are persecuting Christians by using various torture methods to apostatizing and killing
them when they don't. According to Endo, the act of apostatizing was to step on the fumi–e, "a
bronze portrait of Jesus or Mary mounted on a wooden frame. The Japanese Christians would have
to step on every New Year's in order to be freedom from the persecution." This didn't dissuade the

On page 103 of the novel Rodrigues thinks to himself that the sea and land were silent as death as he
listens to the waves. He prays and asks why they have been abounded completely. He describes the
nature and this represents how hopeless he feels about his situation "The sea and the land were silent
as death; only the dull sound of the waves lapping against the boat broke the silence of the night".
Sebastian says that the land and sea are silent and they remind him of death. He is upset because
about how God is not answering him. He is surrounded by the silence of God; he is so destressed he
feels it everywhere. After the murders of the Japanese Christians the landscape is unchanged a
silent. All these forms of silence he has to deal with reflect God ignoring their suffering. Silence
represents the lack of concern in Rodrigues's world and he believes that God exist to help or control
the world. This is why he feels like God is being indifferent to him.
While Rod is traveling he is surrounded by water. The imagery of the water given represents how he
views the world. The way he describes the water shows his negative additude toward life and what
is to come. Water represents Purity. Rodrigues states that the sea is dark, which could also mean
impure. Water represents life and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

throughout it all. Rodrigues is saying that he and the other Christians in Japan are not strong like

Reconstruction After The Civil War By John Rodrigue
While other authors focus their attention in regards to Reconstruction in the Southern states after the
American Civil War on political matters and the meaning of Reconstruction itself, John Rodrigue
ventures into the world of Sugar and the relationships between planters and freedmen to illustrate
the creation of a labor system within the world of sugar cane plantations in Louisiana. By
concentrating on this specific business and region, the author is able to illustrate the factors that
shaped labor during and after the Civil War, while showing how Reconstruction altered life in terms
of labor for both whites and African Americans. Rodrigue argues that by focusing on this specific
region reveals how blacks were able to gain negotiating power with planters in an effort to support
free labor. By utilizing primary and secondary sources, the author frames the narrative and provide
the reader with a personal perspective into the free labor system. While Rodgrigue's book focuses on
varying aspects of the relationship between planters and freedmen, his essential objective is to
evaluate the consequences of emancipation after the Civil War and "Argues that the particular
demands of sugar production accorded freedmen considerable leverage in the conflict that attended
the creation of a new labor system." ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Shusaka Endo Silence Analysis
In Shusaka Endo's novel called Silence many people would consider his work to being unbiblical
because it of the usage of Christian language that is taken out of original context. But as a person
reads closer into the text, one must realize that there is a reoccurring theme of sin that is used
throughout the book by using the imagery of animals that is used to relate people to what they are
capable of doing and their sinful nature. The reason why Endo has used animal imagery is to explain
their characteristics in relationship to sin. A specific animal imagery that is focused in the book
would be a dog. Endo uses the dog to depict a message about how all people have a sinful nature
and that no matter who we are we are all the same as dogs. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This proves that the novel has a pattern of a reoccurring theme of when person struggles with the
silence of God; they are faced with the temptation to sin as well. A second imagery that uses the
dogs to illustrate human behavior when faced with apostasy would be an imagery for Rodrigues,
when he is interrogated and captured by the Japanese and is forced to apostatize by trampling his
foot on the fumie. Endo uses the imagery that lead up to that instance was when Ferreira who at this
point changed his name to Sawano Chuan, which is name given by the Japanese, who had "the priest
dragged his feet along the corridor. Step by step he made his way forward, as if his legs were bound
by heavy leaden chains– and Ferreira guided him along (170). This part of the book is where the
priest Rodrigues is now bound in chains and has become like a dog where he is considered to look
"wild" like Kichijiro and Ferreira right before they had apostatized. At this point Rodrigues has gone
through major events from the drowning of fellow Christians after his capture by the Japanese to
even the realization that he is no different than Kichijiro (175). With this in mind, it proves that
when a person's faith is tested despite being leadership they have a sinful nature and an

The Narrow Road To The Deep North Comparison
Kellie Elmore once said, "Sometimes, the only way to ever find yourself is to get completely lost".
This line by Elmore, beautifully states about how finding the true person in one's self requires a
person to become experienced. However, sometimes these experiences don't end up the way we
want them to be because of the life's obstacles on the way. As a result, of the struggles and of
becoming lost that we face we tend to learn about our true–self that we as humans didn't know of
because we become so engaged in society. For example, in the novel The Narrow Road to the Deep

scences are protrayed by Basho explaining how to appericate life, seasons, and the surroundings
around us. For Basho being part of the external world would cause peacefulness for ones own self
because they are part of nature. In addition, throughout the novel the journey revealed to Basho that
life is impermanent because it is influx and due to that we as humans can't grasp life's goals because
we are constantly changing. For Basho giving respect to life the way it is and by accepting it without

Real Life Model Paper
A model provides a representation of a real life system (Oguz, 2004). Elements of real life are
represented in the model as variables and allow for analysis of these selected variables, their
relationships, and the interdependencies between them (Oguz, 2004). Models provide a platform to
investigate historical data, virtually manipulate these variable, and assess potential implications of
current or future policies and programs on these variables.
Land use change and urban growth is one such real life event that has been analyzed and modeled
using a variety of different techniques. Understanding the change in land use and urban growth
patterns enable forecasting and possible prediction of consequences of human behavior and natural
phenomenon. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This drawback was addressed by emergence of polycentric and zonal land use models in the late
1930s and 1940s (Rodrigue, 2015). A model proposed by Hoyt (1939), based on a study of
residential areas of North America, stated that land use pattern and growth were not sharply defined
as concentric circles but rather were sectors within a circle and major transportation corridors were
responsible for defining these sectors (Rodrigue, 2015). Harris and Ullman (1945) proposed a model
which also stated that cities do not grow around central business district but rather develop as nodes
that differentiate and are further specialized based on factors such as accessibility, proximity
interactions with other similar or different areas, as well as location suitability based on price, rent
and so on (Rodrigue, 2015). Following these concepts of land use and urban growth, hybrid models,
such as that of Isard (1955), were developed in the latter half of the 1950. These models
amalgamated the behaviors of various concentric, sector, and nuclei models into one model to
explain land use change and urban growth (Rodrigue, 2015). The limitations of these traditional
models have been their static and linear nature, which made it difficult for these models to
encompass and generate certain parameters such as complex surface features, as well as their focus
on mostly large geographic units such as administrative regions, that provided insufficient spatial
information for setting up detailed land use and growth models (Qi,

Shusaku Endo Silence Analysis
Silence by Shusaku Endo portrays the effects of isolation which is seen through the change of
perspective of the protagonist, Sebastian Rodrigues. Rodrigues, a Portuguese priest, first travelled to
Japan as a missionary with a passion for evangelism and striving to spread the faith of the Jesuits in
Japan. Rodrigues arrives in Japan with such great passion for evangelism, however, throughout the
novel, Rodrigues faces the challenges of isolation from God that ends up in him doubting the very
existence of the one he travelled to Japan to spread news about.

Kichijiro, in China who helps them travel into Japan. Kichijiro "promised"(21) to put them in touch

Silence By Shusaku Endo 's Silence

Intro to Religious Thought
12/11/2014
Many times throughout religious history God has seemed to show silence towards his followers, at
times when they really needed Him the most. For instance the Jews have a long history of anguish
and suffering at the hands of other religious faiths or races, and often have been met with silence
from their God. The holocaust is perhaps the most well–known example of a religious group being
persecuted without any protection from the God that they worship and seek protection from. In
Shusaku Endo's book Silence, he writes of another example of religious persecution, this time
focusing on the Japanese eliminating Christianity. When religious people face suffering they can
often be faced with a horrible dilemma: What 's more important, my faith, or the lives of others? If a
religious person has to commit sacrilege in order to save another human beings life, is that the right
thing to do? Or even further, if a religious person must give up their religion in order to save other
people, is that the option they should, or would take? Regardless of the decisions people make
facing such dilemmas, why should they need to face this dilemma in the first place? If their God
would not stay silent, and come to the aid of His people, then would the dilemma not be averted?

Father Rodrigue Of Silence
Silence tells the story of two Portuguese Jesuit priests who travel to Japan during a time of unrest,
turmoil and persecution. Upon being captured, the priests are witness to indescribable brutalities that
test their own beliefs and principals.
God's silence is a recurring theme throughout chapters four and five and causes Father Rodrigues a
great deal of confusion, anger and frustration. His silence is first mentioned after Kichijiro, Mokichi
and Ichizo are chosen as the three hostages that will be sent to the magistrate's office. In his letters
home, Father Rodrigues is describing the conflicting feeling and emotions that Kichijiro expressed
before leaving. "Why has Our Lord imposed this torture and this persecution on poor Japanese

A third example of this unending silence can be seen when the Japanese officials are transporting
Father Rodrigues to Yokose–no–Ura. Upon learning of their destination, Father Rodrigues begins
searching for the Jesuit church that was erected years before. After being unable to locate the church
from his position in the boat, Father Rodrigues asks for the guard to point out its location and is told,
"there is nothing left of it" (Endo, pg. 102). Following the discovery of the church's destruction,
Father Rodrigues prays to God in anger:
Why have you abandoned us so completely? Even the village was constructed for you; and have you
abandoned it to its ashes? Even when the people are cast out of their homes have you not given them
courage? Have you just remained silent like the darkness that surrounds me? Why? At least tell me
why. We are not strong like Job who was afflicted with leprosy as a trial. There is a limit to our
endurance. Give us no more suffering. (Endo, pg.

Selma Rodrigues Brown's Life
Selma Rodrigues–Brown was a life time resident of Baltimore, she grew up in what she called the
hood, she was all of five feet two inches tall, black nappy hair, and her complexion was very dark
and she was mean as hell. She was the leader up of Uptown Crips, which was very unusual to have a
woman in that leadership spot. At thirty–two years of age, she had fought and killed her way to the
top, she had the member's respect, only to the point where they all knew she would have them killed
in a heartbeat. For Selma the event was a blessing sent by God for her specifically, she was able to
consolidate her power over the city, by brute force, within three months after the event. Selma was

Army. She had sought out the military veterans within the ranks, promoted them into the higher
echelons of her Army, as long as it was clear they did what she wanted them to. The Military
veterans were primarily Army and Marines; she felt she had no use for Navy or Air Force, because
she had no Navy or Air Force. The training her Soldiers needed fell more into line than that of the
Army and Navy. Those particular veterans were responsible for training her new Army, her biggest
problem was discipline. Anyone found flashing gang signs or wearing their old gang colors were
quickly executed, there was no room in her Army for this division. She wanted her Army as close to
the real thing as possible, wanted the structure of an Army, Squads, Platoons, Companies, Battalions
and if possible a Brigade. She also wanted the rank structure, Privates, Private First Class, Corporal,
Sergeant, and wanted Officers too. She labeled herself, Supreme General of Baltimore, she had four
Generals, which she barely trusted, but she trusted them more than she did anyone else. The issues
with her veterans were that they were all young and none had ever risen past the rank of Sergeant in
either the Army or Marines.

Shusaku Endo Silence Summary
Silence by Shusaku Endo is the story of a Portuguese Jesuit priest named Sebastian Rodrigues who,
along with companions, sets out for Japan to help the local church members and to investigate the
recent apostasy of their mentor. Upon arriving in Japan, Rodrigues and his companion find that the
local Christians face extreme persecution, and are forced into hiding. The Japanese government
views Christianity as an evil foreign influence, and so takes drastic steps to end it. As Rodrigues and
his companion reach Japan, they meet a man who knows of local Christians that are essentially in
hiding. Rodrigues and his companion begin to preach their faith in secret to the local people.
Meanwhile, Japanese officials seek out local Christians and subject them to imprisonment, brutal
torture, and death in an attempt to force the faithful to renounce their religious beliefs by
apostatizing. As Rodrigues sees the absolute brutality endured by these Japanese Christians, he
wonders why God remains silent through their suffering and eventually solves the mystery of his
mentor as he finally decides to apostatize himself. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the lens of a human being. While our textbook teaches of the actual events which transpired during
the timeline of this novel, the novel is far more real and powerful because it presents the events

Silence By Shusako Endo : Cultural Clash Between...
Throughout the Novel Silence, Shusako Endo depicts the cultural clash between Christianity and
Japan. We feel the frustrations that this brings, and are provoked to ask questions such as, why is
God silent in the midst of his people's suffering? But the greater question it begs is what cultural
implications have we placed on Christ? Do we expect him to act as a hero in our culture would? He
transcends time and culture, but do our expectations and experiences cast a shadow on our
impression of God? The theme of the silence of God, suggested by the title is brought to light
throughout the novel, and perhaps the reader can see this as one cultural expectation placed on
Christ by a particular group of people based on their perceptions or experiences. Their experiences
in life cast a shadow on their impression of God, and Jesus is to be a cultural hero in their frame.
The conflict between Japanese Culture and Christianity is a main focus within Endo's work, and we
are led to think that Christianity will have to adapt to take root in the 'swamp' of Japan. As Kichijiro
puts it, "A tree which flourishes in one kind of soil may wither if the soil is changed. As for the tree
of Christianity, in a foreign country its leaves may grow thick and the buds may be rich, while in
Japan the leaves wither and no bud appears. Father, have you never thought of the difference in the
soil, the difference in the water?" (Endo 179) When we look to scripture regarding culture, and the

Victimization of Minor Characters in Laura Esquivel's...
In a novel, minor characters are never the focus of the plot. Minor characters are present in a novel
to affect the major characters and help the character development of the major characters. Minor
characters influence the major characters in many ways. One of these ways of supporting the major
characters, is the victimization of the minor characters. Two excellent examples of minor characters
that impact the major characters of the novels due to the minor characters being victimized is Nacha

Monica offered Father Rodrigues a cucumber, showing her respect for him by giving him what little
food she had to offer. From this small yet generous offer made by Monica, Father Rodrigues
reflected on his mission to Japan.
Since coming to this country, he reflected, he had caused nothing but hardship to these poor
Christians, and he nibbled at the cucumber with his front teeth. He had received from them the little
hut in which he had dwelt, they had given him the clothing he now wore, he had eaten their food.
Now it was his turn to give them something. But what could he give? The only thing he had to offer
was his life and his death (Endo 81).
Monica was already malnourished, yet she selflessly offered her only food to Father Rodrigues, a
man she had never encountered before. This was huge to Father Rodrigues and it made him question
what he can do to help her in return. Monica?s impact and the victimization made Father Rodrigues
question whether or not his coming to Japan really worth it or not. He realized that he had only
created more hardships for the Christian peasants that he had encountered throughout Japan.
However, at the same time, Father Rodrigues also realized that many of the Christians looked up to
him and were thankful that Father Rodrigues would try to come and help them. Monica, through her
being victimized, helped Father Rodrigues decide his fate in the end, dying as a martyr, or living and

caught in practice. Rodrigues does secret baptisms and listens to people's confessions but constantly
in fear of being discovered. Silence was satisfying as a historical novel because the themes

themes constantly depicted through Rodrigues' journey. Due to the high reward for information
about a priest and the current magistrate's lack of mercy towards anyone of the Catholic church, this

Kichijiro: Father Rodrigues And Father Garrpe
Kichijiro is a Japanese man that Father Rodrigues and Father Garrpe come across in Macao and they

as very weak willed and becomes the betrayer of the priests. Kichijiro's betrayal put into a biblical
sense would make him Judas as Father Rodrigues takes on the role of Christ in this story. The way
in which the author shows this is by pointing out his weakness early in the story and creates a
distrust in him form the very beginning. When Father Rodrigues and Father Garrpe heard that there

would see him down by the ship working. However, he would immediately stop working once the
supervisor would leave. His weak will and unwillingness to work immediately made the priests
question is this man can be trusted to help them. Once they made it to Japan, Kichijiro went off to

heads, as they soon believed instead of returning with news of a village, he would instead return
with guards to have them arrested. The priests both seemed untrusting earlier in the book but this

One Of The Most Distinctive Catholic Beliefs Is, “Human’S
One of the most distinctive Catholic beliefs is, "human's exist in relation to a Triune God." In this
claim, the Triune God is made up of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Father is also
known as the creator; he created the Earth and humanity. The Son is Jesus, the son of God. While
the first two are commonly well known, the importance of the Holy Spirit often goes unknown or
forgotten. The Holy Spirit has several jobs; he is a teacher, a reminder, and a guide. He works to
open one's eyes to the word of God, and to help one see what God wants them to see. In addition, he

Furthermore, Day claims that this exercise helps one to grow and reassures that they are on the
"right path." Being on the "right path" means they are following God's will and are acting more like
Jesus. This is also an example of the Holy Spirit's presence, since the Holy Spirit is responsible for
guiding humans to righteousness. Similarly, Shusaku Endo's novel, Silence, describes a lesson
taught by the Holy Spirit. In the novel, Rodrigues is on a spiritual journey, trying to understand his
faith. However, it isn't until he apostates that he understands his relationship with God. "He loved
him now in a different way from before. Everything that had taken place until now had been
necessary to bring him to this love. 'Even now I am the last priest in this land. But Our Lord was not
silent. Even if he had been silent, my life until this day would have spoken of him" (Endo 191). This
quote shows that Rodrigues is now able to view his struggle as a test from God. The Holy Spirit
works as a teacher and a guide to allow Rodrigues to arrive at this conclusion. By leading him to
apostatize, the Holy Spirit pulls him in closer to his faith. Throughout the novel, Rodrigues keeps
questioning his faith, wondering why God is remaining silent while his followers are suffering.
However, in the end, Rodrigues is able to see that God was not being silent, but he was forcing him
to question his faith, so he can gain a stronger and

Amalia Rodrigues Poem: A Portuguese Home
In a small culture assignment for my human geography class, I stumbled upon an Amalia Rodrigues
song, the title translates to "A Portuguese Home". The lyrics describing a humble home brought
back memories of long summer vacations at my grandparent's home. I can imagine myself sitting at
the dinner table in the song, chattering with my cousins in Portuguese over bread and soup. This
reminded me that while I may be an American citizen by birth, Portuguese culture still plays a large
role in my background.
To try to reduce my experience as a Portuguese–American to a single story is to devalue one
culture's impact on my life in favor of another. The Tower of Belém is no less important to me than
the Empire State building. Overall, both cultures have an equal influence on my life, but they do so
in different aspects. American culture impacts my public life; this is the culture I experience at
school, with friends and my future career. Portuguese culture affects my domestic life. This is due to
my parent's commitment to keeping Portuguese traditions in our lives. Dinner is always a home–

Shusaku Endo Silence Summary

over three hundred years of controversy, violence, and attempted conformity of a nation by the
Japanese leaders (Endo. In response to this, Shusaku Endo, one of Japan's foremost novelists, wrote
the moving and eye–opening novel Silence. It tells the story of a Portuguese priest's struggles during
the climax of hostility and cruelty toward the Christian minority in Japan. "Silence", the title of this

The presence of the furthering of the silence of God and forced suppression of religion and faith –by
the incompatibility with Japanese culture and religion– is overwhelming in this text. How this said

Shusaku Endo Silence Summary
Silence, by Shusaku Endo, describes Portuguese missionaries, Sebastian Rodrigues and Francisco
Garrpe, and their journey from Portugal to Japan. Rodrigues finds himself teaching the Japanese
Christians about his faith until he is betrayed to the authorities by an apostatized Christian. While in
confinement, he meets his apostatized mentor, Ferreira, who convinces him to renounce his faith,
and save the lives of the Japanese Christians being tortured in the pit. In effect, Shusaku Endo's
Silence describes the extensive isolation that Sebastian Rodrigues experiences that ultimately alters
his perspective from caring about his own faith, to caring about the lives of others.
Sebastian Rodrigues' priestly lifestyle defines his values and perspective on life through his
eagerness to spread the word of God. Endo begins to introduce the themes of isolation and despair
through an apostatized Catholic Priest. Christovao Ferreira had, according to Rodrigues, been faced

Silence And The Avoidance Of Persecution
Silence and the Avoidance of Persecution
In the film Silence, the characters of Kichijiro, Rodrigues, and Ferreira illustrate the idea that a
person's outward actions fail at conveying their inward beliefs. Throughout the film, Kichijiro
consistently claims that he is a Christian but then denies Christ whenever serious opposition arises.
However, the film uses the discovery of Kichijiro's crucifix at the end of the film and his continuous
declarations to Father Rodrigues of, Forgive me Father for I have sinned," as a method of suggesting
that even though Kichijiro outwardly apostated many times, he still had a strong faith on the inside.
Moreover, the character of Rodrigues extends the film's theme through the line, "Even if God had
been silent my whole life to this very day everything I do, everything I've done, speaks of Him," and
through his possession of a crucifix when his body underwent cremation. The aforementioned quote
and the possession of the crucifix illustrate that even though Rodrigues committed the act of
apostasy he never truly apostatized in his heart. Finally, when the fallen priest Ferreira mentions to
Rodrigues, "Only our Lord can judge your heart," it evidences that even though Ferreira openly
apostated and helped the Japanese in their attempt at attaining Rodrigues' apostasy, ... Show more

Summary Of Shusako Endo, Silence, New York : Taplinger...
Book Review of Shusako Endo, Silence, New York: Taplinger Publishing, 1890
1. The author's purpose for using the title Silence for the book is three–fold. First, it represents the
belief by both priest, Rodrigues and Ferreira, that God was silent during times of persecution when
the Christians of Japan was being persecuted for not renouncing their faith. Why does God allow
His believers to suffer vicious and horrendous persecution? Rodrigues questioned God on numerous
occasions. The most heart–wrenching question Rodrigues posed to God was just before he
apostatized; actually, it was a statement to God. "Lord, it is now that you should break the silence.
You must not remain silent." Second, the Japanese government was determined to remove
Christianity from Japan. Basically, the government was silencing Christians and anything related to
Christianity. After Rodrigues had apostatized, the Japanese officials used him to inspect the "strange
goods" of foreigners to ensure the items were not "forbidden Christian objects (p. 176). Third, it
represents the silence of those Christians who kept their Christian faith a secret for fear of
persecution. Like the peasants of Tomogi, who had to hide everything they possessed that
represented Christianity whenever the officials appeared. They were a secret society of Christian.
Therefore, in appearance, the Japanese government was silencing the Christian faith, but in actuality
there was a remnant of Christians silently

The Role Of Silence In Silence By Shusaku Endo
"Silence is violence" is a common phrase used by people nowadays which references people who
lack initiative when it comes to speaking out against oppression. The same phrase could be applied
to the ideas within Shusaku Endo's novel, Silence. Endo was clever to name his novel Silence,
because the word is a very prominent symbol within the story. In fact, it plays a crucial role to the
development of the main character. Although some readers may argue that the role of silence in the
book is neutral, I claim that silence plays a negative role for the characters because it is what causes
protagonist Rodrigues to renounce his faith. In the story, it represents the silence of God, which
induces Rodrigues to question his religion through the torture of innocent Japanese Christians.
Padre Rodrigues begins to become uncomfortable with silence, as it is usually present in moments
of danger or peril. For example, Rodrigues compares the village to an empty ghost town as the
samurai patrol through, with the villagers remaining silent out of fear. He feels sorrow for the
villagers as he prays that their suffering and years of hiding will come to an end. In a letter,
Rodrigues writes, "Tomogi was like an ancient, abandoned ruin. Yet I could sense the awful silence
that enveloped the whole place. Earnestly I prayed to God... I prayed and prayed that this awful
noonday silence might forever be taken away from the village over which it hung so ominously."

Silence Shusak Endo Analysis

  • 1. Silence Shusak Endo Analysis Everyone believes in something or someone to a certain extent. That extent is revealed when consequences are laid out on the table. In the intriguing novel Silence, by Shusaku Endo, the pathway of the Jesuit priest, Sebastian Rodriguez, is followed as he embarks to Japan during the height of the country's persecution of Christians in the 1600s to perform missionary work. One of his goals for this trip was to find out why one of his old teachers renounced their faith after being captured and tortured. However, as time would tell, Rodrigues found himself in a position of torture where he too had to decide whether or not he would renounce his faith by stepping on the fumie in front of the Japanese men. After facing a mental battle within himself, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I am glad that this historical message was delivered in this particular form because it seems to me that most history classes only involve books that are filled with factual events or backgrounds on people. Even though the story of Rodrigues is full of details on his life, by reading it in the form of a novel that is comprised of diary entries and other writings, makes the information easier for me to interpret. I find it difficult to read through textbooks, but when it comes to stories, I think they are much more enjoyable. In addition, novels of history make it easier for me to imagine and picture what individuals were going through because I am able to become attached to the characters involved. With that in mind, when Rodrigues was faced with the choice of whether or not to step on the fumie, I already knew in my head what I wanted him to do because I was emotionally attached. Throughout the entire novel, I read about the trials that Rodrigues faced in order to perform his missionary work. After picturing him fighting through the hardships, I desperately wanted to see him continue to stand up against the Japanese oppression. So when he made the decision to step on the fumie, I was filled with disappointment. As a result of this, I found the problem to be with Rodrigues himself for making the wrong ... • 3. Father Rodrigue In Silence In Silence, a Portuguese missionary named Father Rodrigues travels to Japan in an effort to convert the Japanese to Christianity. He also hopes to find out the truth behind rumors that one of his old teachers, Father Ferreira, had become apostate during his time in Japan. While on his expedition, Father Rodrigues sees and experiences the torture that Inoue, the magistrate of Chikugo, inflicts on followers of the Christian faith. However, he allows Japanese Christians to be tortured and killed because of his refusal to apostatize, which reveals that he may not be as selfless as he appears outwardly. The first time the Rodrigues sees for himself how Christianity is punished in Japan is when Mokichi and Ichizo, two villagers who helped hide him in their town, are tied to two trees that have been made into huge stakes and set up in the ocean. They are left there to die a slow and painful death. Even after seeing the two men undergo this suffering, Rodrigues continues traveling throughout the country, essentially endangering the lives of anyone who is willing to help him. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many of Rodrigues's actions are both cowardly and selfish. When he arrives in Japan, he is traveling with Father Garrpe, a friend and colleague. Rodrigues actually watches Garrpe sacrifice his own life while attempting to save Japanese that are being put to death, yet does nothing to help. The closest Rodrigues comes to embodying Christian values during that particular situation is in this quote, where he at least acknowledges that his actions aren't in line with what he preaches: "His pity for them had been overwhelming, but pity was not action. It was not love. Pity, like passion, was no more than a kind of instinct" (Endo ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Uniformity Vs Conformity Conformity in the land of the free Uniformity. Conformity. These words have negative connotations in the minds of many Americans. However, many believe that the United States is keeping the standard in society of uniformity and conformity. America's society is based on the model of uniformity and conformity because of minorities not fully being accepted and other citizens not being accepting of other culture. First, minorities are often pushed to the side by the majority of American because of some believing the minorities are not as important. For instance, a bilingual speaker Rodrigues talks about his childhood and how he believed that he did not fully fit in until he conformed into what the rest of America wanted him to be. This can be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The United States of America today is keeping the standard of uniformity and conformity because of not accepting minorities as respected people in the country. Secondly, immigrants from many different parts of the world who have come to America have felt that their cultures have been ridiculed and thus forces them to conform and become uniform. For example, the excerpt of "A Raisin in the Sun", depicts an African woman who is made fun of by a white person who doesn't fully understand her cultural clothing. This can be clearly seen when George states, "Let's face is baby, your heritage is nothing but a bunch of raggedy assed spirituals and some grass huts!" (Source 4). George has no respect for Beneatha's culture and does not try to understand where she is coming from. This a perfect example of how the majority will force minorities to leave their culture behind and conform the society's standard of uniformity. Beneatha responds to his belittling comment by saying, "You are standing there in your splendid ignorance talking about people were the first to smelt iron on the fact of the earth!" (Source 4). She reacted in this way because he is not only insulting her culture but her as a person. George's ignorant comment and Beneatha's retaliation shows that America's modern–day society is not moving towards diversity and individuality but rather moving backward into uniformity and conformity. Ensures that remedial action necessary to maintain an acceptable level of safety is implemented c. Provides for continues monitoring and regular assessment of the safety level achieved d. Aims to make continuous improvement in the overall level of safety ICAO standards state that General Aviation (GA) operators must establish and maintain an SMS "appropriate to the size and complexity of the operation" (Starke, Jason, 2012). The SMS also provides FAA a means of assessing an organization's safety management capability. The main idea of an SMS is to incorporate control of risk into normal day–to–day ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This first component of SMS has five elements: management commitment and responsibility, safety accountabilities, appointment of key safety personnel, coordination of emergency response planning and SMS documentation (Rodrigues & Cusick, 2011). The SMS adds emphasis on management control, therefore, a SMS would need an ideal safety culture in place. A safety culture can be considered the core that is critical to the ongoing success of an SMS. Management should take a principal role in creating a safety culture within their organization, so that SMS becomes an essential part of the management and work practices of the organization (Rodrigues & Cusick, 2011). In an effort for management to set safety objectives and goals and define processes and procedures a safety policy must first be implemented. A safety policy should include the following: a. A safety policy shall reflect organizational commitments regarding safety b. A clear statement about the provision of the necessary resources for the implementation of the safety policy c. Safety reporting procedures d. The condition under which disciplinary action would not apply e. Indicate which types of operational behaviors or unacceptable Because it is through management that employees are hired, fired and disciplined by, the safety policy should be not only developed by management, but also be communicated to all employees (Rodrigues & Cusick, ... • 9. Analysis: Landing Of The Rodrigue Brothers George Rodrigue is the artist I chose to research on because of his very bland unique of art work. George Rodrigue was born in the city of New Iberia on March 13, 1944– December 14, 2013. Mr.Rodrigue attended an all–male high school named Brothers of the Christian Schools. He started painting small landscape portraits and gradually increased to family gatherings. He studied art at University of Southwestern Louisiana which is known to us today as University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Also, he attended the Art Center College of Design in California. When Rodrigue returned back home in the late 1960s he was known for his creativity in the Cajun arts. This painting is called Landing of the Rodrigue Brothers it was created ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This painting looks very basic and unusual. I would consider this to be a very unidentified portrait of a dog embracing the Cajun cultures. This painting shows me that it's okay to be unique and not like everyone else. The dog wearing a tie is not something you see on a daily basis which shows that being different is absolutely fine. Yes, this form does reflect the art because the meaning of this painting is very straight to the point and justified. The dog is sitting very still with a distinguished face almost as to like your different why can't I be. The artist emphasized the tie by painting bright yellow polka dots. By creating the bright yellow polka dots, it will pop out to people viewing the painting first. Majority of Rodrigue`s work is associated with the Cajun lifestyle. In all of his painting you can see little details of Cajun cultures. The artist doesn't really use much technique besides shading, lines, and a variety of colors. The blue dog that Rodrigue is famous for he uses a very distinct style of shading just enough to give some characteristics of the dog features. Lines are used to create the defined shapes. Rodrigue doesn't use a wide variety of colors. Most of his creations he uses very vibrant colors. The main source of inspiration is based off f the Cajun ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Sacrificity And Spirituality InThe Butterfly Mosque, And... In a spiritual journey, often times it is necessary to put oneself at risk. Physical, emotional or psychological harm can easily befall someone on their travels from Booth's Badland to Homeland. One's willingness to accept the burden of suffering, begrudgingly or otherwise, resonates throughout the toils of a spiritual traveller in many forms. Sacrificing oneself or aspects thereof in the pursuit or support of one's spirituality often presents challenges unique to the journey itself; as Heraclitus of Ephesus said, "You could not step twice into the same river; for other waters are ever flowing on to you." In The Butterfly Mosque by G. Willow Wilson and the film Silence, directed by Martin Scorsese, we see two different perspectives on the notion of self–sacrifice in search of spiritual growth and confirmation. While Willow Wilson relinquishes everything she knows in search of a new world that may open her eyes farther than the Western world ever could, the travels of Sebastião Rodrigues begin to strengthen his resolve in God, which would be dashed and battered against the Kyushan shores. Both individuals will be shown to demonstrate the impact acts of self– sacrifice have on ones spirituality, for better or for worse; whether it is one's intent to alter their entire system of belief or not, the costs that spirituality extolls from a person can have a wide range of unintended effects. Faith can itself be subject to sacrificial acts; in order to save something else, one might ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Religion In The Film Silence The film, Silence, has a myriad of characters that are on a spectrum of religious belief. There are certain characters that show an immense devotion to their faith, willing to risk their life and the lives of others to profess their fidelity to God. Although this film highlights two Jesuit priests, Father Sebastian Rodrigues and Father Francisco Garupe, there is an interesting contrasting devotion from the Inquisition to Buddhism. They have no tolerance for Christianity and believe it to be a cancer that must be cut from Japan. The priests go to great lengths to find a third priest, Father Cristovao Ferreira, who has gone missing while operating as a missionary. Father Ferreira ends up getting captured, recants his faith, and sides with the Inquisition, helping them investigate objects hidden as Christian relics. There are many applicable ideas relating to religious fundamentalism within the film. Sigmund Freud and William James differ on the explanation of religious experience. James focuses on religion as feelings and experiences of an individual. For the most part the religious experience is felt instead of a concept. James also believes that religion is not linear or homogenous. There are different perceptions or involvement one has with their faith. A great example of contrasting persons within their religious experiences in the film, Silence, is Father Rodrigues and Yosulu Kubozuka (Kichijiro). The viewer would most likely consider Father Rodrigues as the main ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. The Scholarship Boy By Richard Rodriguez Through the narrative "The Scholarship Boy" I find few turning points that I notice a shift in the demeanor of Richard Rodriguez as well as how I perceive the story. First of all, it is made apparent to me that people acknowledge him for his successes by making remarks such as, "Your parents must be proud" or "How did you manage it? According to the opening paragraphs Rodriguez is seen as a model student. Although this may be true, the first turning point I find suggests otherwise as Rodriguez conveys, "For although I was a very good student, I was also a very bad student...Always successful, always unconfident. Exhilarated by my process. Sad." This quote changed my perspective of Rodriguez because of the negative emotion he expresses toward his family. By the same token, I recall my sister being an outstanding achiever throughout school, yet, she was similarly depressed as well as annoyed towards me and the rest of our family. This flashback assisted me in relating to Rodriguez's emotions towards his successes. In the same fashion, I am supplied a grasp of his shift in tone and direction in the narrative. The second turning point is like a surge of hope amongst the sadness. We are brought a new perspective of the scholarship boy from his reading of the book "The Uses of Literacy". Rodriguez learns he is not alone in his feelings, "For the first time I realized that there were other students like me, and so I was able to frame the meaning of my academic success, its ... • 19. A Brief Note On The Aviation Safety Of Aviation Accidents According to Rodrigues and Cusick (2012) humans are accountable for approximately 70–80% of aviation accidents (p.156). A majority of these are caused by the different variables associated with human performance. Psychological factors have a key role in a pilot's everyday responsibility. Some of these traits include: perception, memory, attitude, judgment and decision making, as well as ego (Rodrigues & Cusick, 2012, p. 158–160). These qualities can have drastic effects in commercial aviation if they are not recognized and adjusted accordingly. In this paper I will respond to some questions that are raised in aviation safety: 1.) Can we stop the amount of human errors in aviation? 2.) Is training the problem? 3.) What is being done to slow down the number of errors/accidents? If we can find the answers to these questions, then I believe it is possible to limit and slow down the number of human errors in aviation, thusly slowing the number of accidents and lives lost due to human performance. Can We Stop the Amount of Human Errors? The reality of the situation is no. Humans are different and that is what makes us unique. We will always make mistakes and you cannot stop them. We all have different perceptions, memory capacities, attitudes, decision making skills, and egos. These qualities can be good or bad. Perception is a very important aspect in aviation. • 21. Theme Of Silence The book Silence, by Shusako Endo follows a theme of a silent God who accompanies a believer in adversity. The main character of the book is Sebastian Rodrigues. It tells of Sebastian Rodrigues' arduous journey halfway around the world to Japan in the 1630s, in order to track down a rumor that his mentor Father Ferreira had abandoned his faith, at a time where the Japanese leaders were extremely hostile to foreigners and Christianity and also suspicious of their intentions. He travels with two other missionaries but one of them falls sick whilst travelling and is deemed unfit to carry on to accompany him. The book is not fast paced, but immensely character driven. For example, we see the growth of Sebastian Rodrigues as a priest. At one point he labels Kichijiro a coward. "Was it possible that he was of our faith – this wretch." Here we see him being judgmental. However, later in the novel we see him for the first time–sharing a proper ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, when Rodrigues encounters Ferreira he echoes the thoughts of Inoue, he says " I have labored in this mission for twenty years ... our religion does not take root in this country", Kichijiro also refers to himself as a "weak shoot" that "will never grow no matter what you do". Within the first few pages of the novel, Silence, Shūsaku Endō's throws his readers head on to the cruelty and darkness that the Christians had faced in 17th century feudal Japan. Father Rodrigues, a Jesuit priest sent to covert the Japanese to the Christian faith, he described the "immersion in the hell of boiling water at Unzen." the five of priests and two women went through to give up their faith. However, with all the tortures methods used and being immersed in the boil water and being in prison, they still didn't give up. It leaves the reader, such as my shudder and hard to contemplate what I have just read. Although disturbing, the onslaught of Christian persecution has been ongoing for thousands of years. This historical fiction novel follows the journey of three Jesuit priests from Portugal to investigate the actions that led one of their own superiors to abandon his faith and defaced the image of the church while also carrying out the covert Christian missions in the country. However, when they land in Maco, Father Valignano informs them that Inoue, the governor of Chikugo, are persecuting Christians by using various torture methods to apostatizing and killing them when they don't. According to Endo, the act of apostatizing was to step on the fumi–e, "a bronze portrait of Jesus or Mary mounted on a wooden frame. The Japanese Christians would have to step on every New Year's in order to be freedom from the persecution." This didn't dissuade the three priests who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

All these forms of silence he has to deal with reflect God ignoring their suffering. Shusaka Endo Silence Analysis In Shusaka Endo's novel called Silence many people would consider his work to being unbiblical because it of the usage of Christian language that is taken out of original context. But as a person reads closer into the text, one must realize that there is a reoccurring theme of sin that is used throughout the book by using the imagery of animals that is used to relate people to what they are capable of doing and their sinful nature. The reason why Endo has used animal imagery is to explain their characteristics in relationship to sin. A specific animal imagery that is focused in the book would be a dog. Endo uses the dog to depict a message about how all people have a sinful nature and that no matter who we are we are all the same as dogs. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This proves that the novel has a pattern of a reoccurring theme of when person struggles with the silence of God; they are faced with the temptation to sin as well. A second imagery that uses the dogs to illustrate human behavior when faced with apostasy would be an imagery for Rodrigues, when he is interrogated and captured by the Japanese and is forced to apostatize by trampling his foot on the fumie. Endo uses the imagery that lead up to that instance was when Ferreira who at this point changed his name to Sawano Chuan, which is name given by the Japanese, who had "the priest dragged his feet along the corridor. Step by step he made his way forward, as if his legs were bound by heavy leaden chains– and Ferreira guided him along (170). This part of the book is where the priest Rodrigues is now bound in chains and has become like a dog where he is considered to look "wild" like Kichijiro and Ferreira right before they had apostatized. At this point Rodrigues has gone through major events from the drowning of fellow Christians after his capture by the Japanese to even the realization that he is no different than Kichijiro (175). As a result, of the struggles and of becoming lost that we face we tend to learn about our true–self that we as humans didn't know of because we become so engaged in society. Elements of real life are represented in the model as variables and allow for analysis of these selected variables, their relationships, and the interdependencies between them (Oguz, 2004). Models provide a platform to investigate historical data, virtually manipulate these variable, and assess potential implications of current or future policies and programs on these variables. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This drawback was addressed by emergence of polycentric and zonal land use models in the late 1930s and 1940s (Rodrigue, 2015). A model proposed by Hoyt (1939), based on a study of residential areas of North America, stated that land use pattern and growth were not sharply defined as concentric circles but rather were sectors within a circle and major transportation corridors were responsible for defining these sectors (Rodrigue, 2015). Harris and Ullman (1945) proposed a model which also stated that cities do not grow around central business district but rather develop as nodes that differentiate and are further specialized based on factors such as accessibility, proximity interactions with other similar or different areas, as well as location suitability based on price, rent and so on (Rodrigue, 2015). Following these concepts of land use and urban growth, hybrid models, such as that of Isard (1955), were developed in the latter half of the 1950. These models amalgamated the behaviors of various concentric, sector, and nuclei models into one model to explain land use change and urban growth (Rodrigue, 2015). The limitations of these traditional models have been their static and linear nature, which made it difficult for these models to encompass and generate certain parameters such as complex surface features, as well as their focus on mostly large geographic units such as administrative regions, that provided insufficient spatial information for setting up detailed land use and growth models (Qi, ... Silence By Shusaku Endo 's Silence Zhaowei Cui (Aries) Professor Stephan Davis Intro to Religious Thought 12/11/2014 Many times throughout religious history God has seemed to show silence towards his followers, at times when they really needed Him the most. For instance the Jews have a long history of anguish and suffering at the hands of other religious faiths or races, and often have been met with silence from their God. The holocaust is perhaps the most well–known example of a religious group being persecuted without any protection from the God that they worship and seek protection from. In Shusaku Endo's book Silence, he writes of another example of religious persecution, this time focusing on the Japanese eliminating Christianity. When religious people face suffering they can often be faced with a horrible dilemma: What 's more important, my faith, or the lives of others? If a religious person has to commit sacrilege in order to save another human beings life, is that the right thing to do? Or even further, if a religious person must give up their religion in order to save other people, is that the option they should, or would take? Regardless of the decisions people make facing such dilemmas, why should they need to face this dilemma in the first place? If their God would not stay silent, and come to the aid of His people, then would the dilemma not be averted? • 47. Silence By Shusako Endo : Cultural Clash Between... Throughout the Novel Silence, Shusako Endo depicts the cultural clash between Christianity and Japan. We feel the frustrations that this brings, and are provoked to ask questions such as, why is God silent in the midst of his people's suffering? But the greater question it begs is what cultural implications have we placed on Christ? Do we expect him to act as a hero in our culture would? He transcends time and culture, but do our expectations and experiences cast a shadow on our impression of God? The theme of the silence of God, suggested by the title is brought to light throughout the novel, and perhaps the reader can see this as one cultural expectation placed on Christ by a particular group of people based on their perceptions or experiences. Their experiences in life cast a shadow on their impression of God, and Jesus is to be a cultural hero in their frame. The conflict between Japanese Culture and Christianity is a main focus within Endo's work, and we are led to think that Christianity will have to adapt to take root in the 'swamp' of Japan. As Kichijiro puts it, "A tree which flourishes in one kind of soil may wither if the soil is changed. This period, Edo Japan, prohibited practice of Christianity and included the death of those caught in practice. Rodrigues does secret baptisms and listens to people's confessions but constantly in fear of being discovered. Silence was satisfying as a historical novel because the themes portrayed throughout Rodrigues journey in Japan. Fear of persecution and death is one of the major themes constantly depicted through Rodrigues' journey. Due to the high reward for information about a priest and the current magistrate's lack of mercy towards anyone of the Catholic church, this gives the element of fear and paranoia that a priest would experience during this period. Kichijiro's role in this story is that he is the one who is portrayed as very weak willed and becomes the betrayer of the priests. Kichijiro's betrayal put into a biblical sense would make him Judas as Father Rodrigues takes on the role of Christ in this story. The way in which the author shows this is by pointing out his weakness early in the story and creates a distrust in him form the very beginning. When Father Rodrigues and Father Garrpe heard that there was a Japanese man living in the Chinese district, they thought it was great news. They were informed that he was a man looking to return to his country and they believed that he could help them. What they found was a drunk fisherman named Kichijiro that smelled ... His weak will and unwillingness to work immediately made the priests question is this man can be trusted to help them. Once they made it to Japan, Kichijiro went off to fine a Christian village he had told the priests about. As he was gone however, doubt had filled their heads, as they soon believed instead of returning with news of a village, he would instead return with guards to have them arrested. In this claim, the Triune God is made up of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Father is also known as the creator; he created the Earth and humanity. The Son is Jesus, the son of God. While the first two are commonly well known, the importance of the Holy Spirit often goes unknown or forgotten. The Holy Spirit has several jobs; he is a teacher, a reminder, and a guide. He works to open one's eyes to the word of God, and to help one see what God wants them to see. Being on the "right path" means they are following God's will and are acting more like Jesus. This is also an example of the Holy Spirit's presence, since the Holy Spirit is responsible for guiding humans to righteousness. Similarly, Shusaku Endo's novel, Silence, describes a lesson taught by the Holy Spirit. In the novel, Rodrigues is on a spiritual journey, trying to understand his faith. However, it isn't until he apostates that he understands his relationship with God. "He loved him now in a different way from before. Everything that had taken place until now had been necessary to bring him to this love. 'Even now I am the last priest in this land. But Our Lord was not silent. Even if he had been silent, my life until this day would have spoken of him" (Endo 191). This quote shows that Rodrigues is now able to view his struggle as a test from God. The Holy Spirit works as a teacher and a guide to allow Rodrigues to arrive at this conclusion. By leading him to apostatize, the Holy Spirit pulls him in closer to his faith. Throughout the novel, Rodrigues keeps questioning his faith, wondering why God is remaining silent while his followers are suffering. However, in the end, Rodrigues is able to see that God was not being silent, but he was forcing him to question his faith, so he can gain a stronger and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. Amalia Rodrigues Poem: A Portuguese Home In a small culture assignment for my human geography class, I stumbled upon an Amalia Rodrigues song, the title translates to "A Portuguese Home". The lyrics describing a humble home brought back memories of long summer vacations at my grandparent's home. I can imagine myself sitting at the dinner table in the song, chattering with my cousins in Portuguese over bread and soup. This reminded me that while I may be an American citizen by birth, Portuguese culture still plays a large role in my background. To try to reduce my experience as a Portuguese–American to a single story is to devalue one culture's impact on my life in favor of another. The Tower of Belém is no less important to me than the Empire State building. Overall, both cultures have an equal influence on my life, but they do so in different aspects. American culture impacts my public life; this is the culture I experience at school, with friends and my future career. Portuguese culture affects my domestic life. This is due to my parent's commitment to keeping Portuguese traditions in our lives. Dinner is always a home– cooked meal with the family, and while my family does borrow recipes from other ... In response to this, Shusaku Endo, one of Japan's foremost novelists, wrote the moving and eye–opening novel Silence. It tells the story of a Portuguese priest's struggles during the climax of hostility and cruelty toward the Christian minority in Japan. Many of these individuals tried desperately to hold onto their faith in secrecy during colonization and if discovered, were forced not only to deny this faith, but also to oppose it. The ... The presence of the furthering of the silence of God and forced suppression of religion and faith –by the incompatibility with Japanese culture and religion– is overwhelming in this text. How this said "Silence" functions as a theme of the book and of Japan during this time frame in general. • 67. Shusaku Endo Silence Summary Silence, by Shusaku Endo, describes Portuguese missionaries, Sebastian Rodrigues and Francisco Garrpe, and their journey from Portugal to Japan. Rodrigues finds himself teaching the Japanese Christians about his faith until he is betrayed to the authorities by an apostatized Christian. While in confinement, he meets his apostatized mentor, Ferreira, who convinces him to renounce his faith, and save the lives of the Japanese Christians being tortured in the pit. In effect, Shusaku Endo's Silence describes the extensive isolation that Sebastian Rodrigues experiences that ultimately alters his perspective from caring about his own faith, to caring about the lives of others. Sebastian Rodrigues' priestly lifestyle defines his values and perspective on life through his eagerness to spread the word of God. Endo begins to introduce the themes of isolation and despair through an apostatized Catholic Priest. • 71. Silence And The Avoidance Of Persecution Silence and the Avoidance of Persecution In the film Silence, the characters of Kichijiro, Rodrigues, and Ferreira illustrate the idea that a person's outward actions fail at conveying their inward beliefs. Throughout the film, Kichijiro consistently claims that he is a Christian but then denies Christ whenever serious opposition arises. However, the film uses the discovery of Kichijiro's crucifix at the end of the film and his continuous declarations to Father Rodrigues of, Forgive me Father for I have sinned," as a method of suggesting that even though Kichijiro outwardly apostated many times, he still had a strong faith on the inside. Moreover, the character of Rodrigues extends the film's theme through the line, "Even if God had been silent my whole life to this very day everything I do, everything I've done, speaks of Him," and through his possession of a crucifix when his body underwent cremation. The aforementioned quote and the possession of the crucifix illustrate that even though Rodrigues committed the act of apostasy he never truly apostatized in his heart. Finally, when the fallen priest Ferreira mentions to Rodrigues, "Only our Lord can judge your heart," it evidences that even though Ferreira openly apostated and helped the Japanese in their attempt at attaining Rodrigues' apostasy, ... Habakkuk 1:13 is an all–encompassing verse that illustrates the tragic miss–treatment of Japanese Christians throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth century, which is the setting that Shusaku Endo is successfully capturing. • 75. Summary Of Shusako Endo, Silence, New York : Taplinger... Book Review of Shusako Endo, Silence, New York: Taplinger Publishing, 1890 1. The author's purpose for using the title Silence for the book is three–fold. First, it represents the belief by both priest, Rodrigues and Ferreira, that God was silent during times of persecution when the Christians of Japan was being persecuted for not renouncing their faith. Why does God allow His believers to suffer vicious and horrendous persecution? Rodrigues questioned God on numerous occasions. The most heart–wrenching question Rodrigues posed to God was just before he apostatized; actually, it was a statement to God. "Lord, it is now that you should break the silence. You must not remain silent." Second, the Japanese government was determined to remove Christianity from Japan. Basically, the government was silencing Christians and anything related to Christianity. After Rodrigues had apostatized, the Japanese officials used him to inspect the "strange goods" of foreigners to ensure the items were not "forbidden Christian objects (p. 176). Third, it represents the silence of those Christians who kept their Christian faith a secret for fear of persecution. Like the peasants of Tomogi, who had to hide everything they possessed that represented Christianity whenever the officials appeared. They were a secret society of Christian. Therefore, in appearance, the Japanese government was silencing the Christian faith, but in actuality there was a remnant of Christians silently ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. The Role Of Silence In Silence By Shusaku Endo "Silence is violence" is a common phrase used by people nowadays which references people who lack initiative when it comes to speaking out against oppression. The same phrase could be applied to the ideas within Shusaku Endo's novel, Silence. Endo was clever to name his novel Silence, because the word is a very prominent symbol within the story. In fact, it plays a crucial role to the development of the main character. Although some readers may argue that the role of silence in the book is neutral, I claim that silence plays a negative role for the characters because it is what causes protagonist Rodrigues to renounce his faith. In the story, it represents the silence of God, which induces Rodrigues to question his religion through the torture of innocent Japanese Christians. Padre Rodrigues begins to become uncomfortable with silence, as it is usually present in moments of danger or peril. For example, Rodrigues compares the village to an empty ghost town as the samurai patrol through, with the villagers remaining silent out of fear. He feels sorrow for the villagers as he prays that their suffering and years of hiding will come to an end. In a letter, Rodrigues writes, "Tomogi was like an ancient, abandoned ruin. Yet I could sense the awful silence that enveloped the whole place. Earnestly I prayed to God... I prayed and prayed that this awful noonday silence might forever be taken away from the village over which it hung so ominously." (50). During this moment in the book, ...
