Critical Mass
PART A
What is Critical Mass?
Critical Mass analysis addresses the involvement of key stakeholders in a
project. It can be used at any time during the course of a project. Critical
Mass can be particularly helpful during the start-up period of a project when
the various relationships needed to make the project successful are
beginning to take shape.
Doing a Critical Mass analysis requires explicit and conscious identification of
the various organizational stakeholders who are already connected to the
project in some way and identifying those who need to be connected. Once
this has occurred the work shifts to carefully assessing each actor’s current
level of involvement with the project. This assessment is based on four
different ways of relating to the project that range from being highly
influential to having nothing to do with it.
The labels for these different levels of influence and involvement are: Make
it happen, Let it happen, Help it happen and Not Involved.
How is it done?
The analysis proceeds by completing a grid in which each person’s current
level of involvement is identified by placing an “O” in the appropriate cell. In
addition, the level of involvement that would help most to make the project
successful is represented by placing an “X” in the relevant cell. Then, the
work shifts to developing a strategy for each stakeholder whose “O”, current
involvement, and “X”, desired involvement, are different.
What this amounts to is carefully considering the situation of such a
stakeholder and formulating a negotiating strategy to create a win/win
solution for the stakeholder and the project resulting in the desired level of
involvement.

feel quite self-conscious and even worried that the purpose of such an
analysis is manipulation. This is decidedly not the case.
Power and influence are, without exception, an omnipresent dimension of
every organization. It takes power and influence to get anything done,
including maintaining what is. Since everyone, including the leader(s) of a
project, are embedded in the organizational system, exerting some form of
influence is inescapable! Critical Mass makes the relationships that are or will
influence a project explicit. And, it makes it possible to use influence in a
way that is positive for the stakeholder and the project.

What have you learned about the implementation process of your new program?
The three topics to focus on are due process, equal protection
and civil rights. This week’s readings are very important not only in career advancement but also in daily lives of individuals. As a public administrator, there is need to ensure justice to all people with respect to the laws of a nation. The week’s reading has also been key in exposing me towards
civil rights. It is important to understand civil rights for one’s protection and also for protection of other civilians as a public administrator. All citizens are entitled to equal protection without any form of discrimination (Chemerinsky, 2006).
Implementation of a new program is actually a process. One cannot just come up with a program and try to implement it without considering the stakeholders who may be affected. It is important to involve all people in a holistic manner in the implementation process of a new program. All stakeholders must be in the position to understand the importance and dangers associated with the new program. Justice and equality must be considered to ensure all people or all stakeholders benefit in the same way from the new program. New programs must also be in line with the laws of a state or a nation. Successful program implementation must thus focus on all these factors to ensure it is acceptable and beneficial to the stakeholders.
What are some major roinadblocks that you can come up against?
Program implementation as stated above can be a challenge. These challenges are mainly brought as a result of the roadblocks one may encounter during the implementation process. One major roadblock can be the exclusion of some stakeholders. All stakeholders must be included within any new program to ensure they all understand what is going on and also what is anticipated of them. Failure to
this may result into
lots of resistance of the new program thus becoming a key roadblock. Unrealistic expectations without a clear success path for the program can also be a major roadblock. Stakeholders need to understand how the program will be beneficial to them. The expectation should also be realistic in terms of achievement; failure to this may result into a roadblock during implementation process. Lack of understanding of the requirements of the program is also a key roadblock that may end up affecting the implementation process (Bhuiyan & Alam, 2004).

Our formative research for the Sage Project at SDSU will consist of primary and secondary research. We will conduct surveys of internal SDSU audiences including faculty and students involved with Sage Project, and external audiences in San Diego including city officials and businesses. The secondary research we examined discusses the importance of civic engagement for sustainable development initiatives and argues that while cities talk about sustainability, they are often poor at implementing programs. Our surveys aim to understand awareness and perceptions of Sage Project, and explore how it can effectively partner with cities on projects.

This is one of the most important parts of this course – I want you to work with your group to design a follow-up study using the topic Social Loafing. Your instructor will present the ideas to the whole class, and you will vote on which one you would like to do for your final class project. As you work on this discussion, try to think about what other variables might influence Loafing. Let me give you a few examples, though try to get creative with your group. Look at prior research and see if you can use some of their work as a follow-up to your study. Have fun with it!
Okay, consider some ideas I was thinking about for a follow-up study (Personally, I would recommend the third or fourth idea, as there is a lot of research you could draw on these new independent variables, which would make Paper III much easier to write). Keep in mind that we will drop one condition from our original Study One independent variable. I suggest keeping the Individual Total and Group Average conditions and dropping the Group Total condition. I have no solid reasoning behind this other than the Group Total and Group Average conditions probably will not differ much in study one, so including both is not necessary. I think keeping the Group Average condition will be easier to use with our new study design for some of the ideas below, but we could retain the Group Total if you have a good reason for doing so!
A fourth idea, and one I think is interesting, is to give participants an anchor. That is, we tell them how many math problems most people solve, with this number varying for the High Anchor condition (where we tell them most people solve 25 problems) and the Low Anchor condition (where we tell them most people solve 12 problems). Participants should attempt to solve more problems in the High Anchor condition than the Low Anchor condition, though participants with a High Anchor in the Individual Total condition should probably solve the most (with those in the Low Anchor and Group Average solving the least). The interesting part here is the High Anchor and Group Average condition. Since we look at the group score, loafing might occur, but the high anchor might disrupt their likelihood to loaf. In other words, this might be an interesting way to see if we can get rid of social loafing if we set a high anchor.
Finally, you can look at some participant characteristics if you like. You can measure the participants’ own ratings of how good they are or how much they enjoy math problems. Those who like math problems may be less likely to loaf (since loafing is less likely when people enjoy the activity). Or we could also look at participant gender. Research suggests that women are less likely to load than men. Would this same pattern hold in our study? Just remember that if you choose a participant characteristic as your second independent variable, you cannot draw cause-effect conclusions (since you cannot randomly assign someone to be good or bad a ...

The three topics to focus on are due process, equal protection
and civil rights. This week’s readings are very important not only in career advancement but also in daily lives of individuals. As a public administrator, there is need to ensure justice to all people with respect to the laws of a nation. The week’s reading has also been key in exposing me towards
civil rights. It is important to understand civil rights for one’s protection and also for protection of other civilians as a public administrator. All citizens are entitled to equal protection without any form of discrimination (Chemerinsky, 2006).
Implementation of a new program is actually a process. One cannot just come up with a program and try to implement it without considering the stakeholders who may be affected. It is important to involve all people in a holistic manner in the implementation process of a new program. All stakeholders must be in the position to understand the importance and dangers associated with the new program. Justice and equality must be considered to ensure all people or all stakeholders benefit in the same way from the new program. New programs must also be in line with the laws of a state or a nation. Successful program implementation must thus focus on all these factors to ensure it is acceptable and beneficial to the stakeholders.
What are some major roinadblocks that you can come up against?
Program implementation as stated above can be a challenge. These challenges are mainly brought as a result of the roadblocks one may encounter during the implementation process. One major roadblock can be the exclusion of some stakeholders. All stakeholders must be included within any new program to ensure they all understand what is going on and also what is anticipated of them. Failure to

lots of resistance of the new program thus becoming a key roadblock. Unrealistic expectations without a clear success path for the program can also be a major roadblock. Stakeholders need to understand how the program will be beneficial to them. The expectation should also be realistic in terms of achievement; failure to this may result into a roadblock during implementation process. Lack of understanding of the requirements of the program is also a key roadblock that may end up affecting the implementation process (Bhuiyan & Alam, 2004).

Our formative research for the Sage Project at SDSU will consist of primary and secondary research. We will conduct surveys of internal SDSU audiences including faculty and students involved with Sage Project, and external audiences in San Diego including city officials and businesses. The secondary research we examined discusses the importance of civic engagement for sustainable development initiatives and argues that while cities talk about sustainability, they are often poor at implementing programs. This is one of the most important parts of this course – I want you to work with your group to design a follow-up study using the topic Social Loafing. Your instructor will present the ideas to the whole class, and you will vote on which one you would like to do for your final class project. As you work on this discussion, try to think about what other variables might influence Loafing. Let me give you a few examples, though try to get creative with your group. Look at prior research and see if you can use some of their work as a follow-up to your study. Have fun with it!
Okay, consider some ideas I was thinking about for a follow-up study (Personally, I would recommend the third or fourth idea, as there is a lot of research you could draw on these new independent variables, which would make Paper III much easier to write). Keep in mind that we will drop one condition from our original Study One independent variable. I suggest keeping the Individual Total and Group Average conditions and dropping the Group Total condition. I have no solid reasoning behind this other than the Group Total and Group Average conditions probably will not differ much in study one, so including both is not necessary. I think keeping the Group Average condition will be easier to use with our new study design for some of the ideas below, but we could retain the Group Total if you have a good reason for doing so!
A fourth idea, and one I think is interesting, is to give participants an anchor. That is, we tell them how many math problems most people solve, with this number varying for the High Anchor condition (where we tell them most people solve 25 problems) and the Low Anchor condition (where we tell them most people solve 12 problems). Participants should attempt to solve more problems in the High Anchor condition than the Low Anchor condition, though participants with a High Anchor in the Individual Total condition should probably solve the most (with those in the Low Anchor and Group Average solving the least). The interesting part here is the High Anchor and Group Average condition. Since we look at the group score, loafing might occur, but the high anchor might disrupt their likelihood to loaf. In other words, this might be an interesting way to see if we can get rid of social loafing if we set a high anchor.
Finally, you can look at some participant characteristics if you like. You can measure the participants’ own ratings of how good they are or how much they enjoy math problems. Those who like math problems may be less likely to loaf (since loafing is less likely when people enjoy the activity). Or we could also look at participant gender. Research suggests that women are less likely to load than men. Would this same pattern hold in our study? Just remember that if you choose a participant characteristic as your second independent variable, you cannot draw cause-effect conclusions (since you cannot randomly assign someone to be good or bad a ...

In response to problems in our environment, we adapt both physically and psychologically to ensure our survival and reproduction. Sexual selection theory describes how evolution has shaped us to provide a mating advantage rather than just a survival advantage and occurs through two distinct pathways: intrasexual competition and intersexual selection. Gene selection theory, the modern explanation behind evolutionary biology, occurs through the desire for gene replication. Two major evolutionary psychological theories are described: Sexual strategies theory describes the psychology of human mating strategies and the ways in which women and men differ in those strategies. Introduction If you have ever been on a first date, you’re probably familiar with the anxiety of trying to figure out what clothes to wear or what perfume or cologne to put on. In fact, you may even consider flossing your teeth for the first time all year. When considering why you put in all this work, you probably recognize that you’re doing it to impress the other person. But how did you learn these particular behaviors? Where did you get the idea that a first date should be at a nice restaurant or someplace unique? It is possible that we have been taught these behaviors by observing others. It is also possible, however, that these behaviors— the fancy clothes, the expensive restaurant —are biologically programmed into us. That is, just as peacocks display their feathers to show how attractive they are, or some lizards do push-ups to show how strong they are, when we style our hair or bring a gift to a date, we’re trying to communicate to the other person: “Hey, I’m a good mate! Choose me! Choose me!" However, we all know that our ancestors hundreds of thousands of years ago weren’t driving sports cars or wearing designer clothes to attract mates. So how could someone ever say that such behaviors are “biologically programmed” into us? Well, even though our ancestors might not have been doing these specific actions, these behaviors are the result of the same driving force: the powerful influence of evolution. Pope Francis's comments on the Big Bang are not revolutionary. Catholic teaching has long professed the likelihood of human evolution
Perhaps it was inevitable that Pope Francis’ comments on the Church’s position on scientific theories such as the Big Bang and evolution would cause a stir. In his address to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, the Pope cautioned against the image of God the creator as “a magician, with a magic wand”, arguing that belief in both theories around the beginnings of the universe and the birth of humankind are consistent with the Catholic faith.
“The Big Bang, which is today posited as the origin of the world, does not contradict the divine act of creation; rather, it requires it”, he stated. Similarly, he argued, “evolution of nature is not inconsistent with the notion of creation because evolution pre-supposes the creation of beings which evolve.”
Yet despite further murmurings that Pope Francis was beginning (yet another) revolution in Catholic doctrine, it must be pointed out – the Pope’s declaration on either theory has not broken with established Catholic belief in the slightest.
The Big Bang theory, originally hypothesised in 1927 by Jesuit priest and physicist Georges Lemaître, is based on the central proposition that the universe is continually expanding. As a preposition, the universe was originally contained within a single point, in a highly intense state of heat and density. In 1969, Millon proposed 8 personality prototypes that could be conceptualized at
lower levels of severity than the level of the personality disorders. These personalities
were fit into a theoretical system that emphasized the strength of the interpersonal at-
tachment and the mode of accommodation. Disorders such as schizophrenia and de-
pression were pictured as a decompensation of the basic personality. This article traces
the evolution of Millon’s theory from the original inception, through the influence of
the 3rd and 4th editions of theDiagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders,
and onto its present form. Now visualized as resulting from 3 polarities, the model has
expanded the number of personalities to include 3 additional prototypes.
Through a book entitledModern Psychopathology(1969),Theodore Millon pro-
posed a new classification for emotional or psychiatric disorders. The foundation of
the system was made up of eight personality prototypes borrowed from the psychi-
atric nosology that was current at the time, the second edition of theDiagnostic and
Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders(DSM–II; American Psychiatric Associa-
tion, 1952). The innovation was the way Millon described and conceptualized the
eight prototypes in the 1969 book and in another book that followed shortly thereaf-
ter (Millon & Millon, 1974).
First, Millon (1969) wrote less pathological versions of personality disorders of
theDSM–II,creating “personality patterns of mild severity” (p. 220). In each case,
he set his descriptions to characterize three elements for each of the eight personal-
ity patterns: behaviors, self-perceptions, and intrapsychic processes.
Second, Millon fit his personality prototypes into a logical and coherent clas-
sification scheme. To organize the eight personality prototypes, Millon focused
on the kind of interpersonal relationships that the individual typically established
and the mode with which the person achieved his or her accommodation with

sonal attachment or dominance to produce four different options (left column of
the figure). Two modes of accommodation (active and passive) were added to
each of the interpersonal choices to create the basis for the eight personality
prototypes.

Introduction
All species of living organisms—from the bacteria on our skin, to the trees in our yards, to the birds outside—evolved at some point from a different species. Although it may seem that living things today stay much the same from generation to generation, that is not the case: evolution is ongoing. Evolution is the process through which the characteristics of species change and through which new species arise.
The theory of evolution is the unifying theory of biology, meaning it is the framework within which biologists ask questions about the living world. Its power is that it provides direction for predictions about living things that are borne out in experiment after experiment. The Ukrainian-born American geneticist Theodosius Dobzhansky famously wrote that "nothing makes sense in biology except in the light of evolution" (Dobzhansky 1964, 449). He meant that the principle that all life has evolved and diversified from a common ancestor is the foundation from which we understand all other questions in biology. This chapter will explain some of the mechanisms for evolutionary change and the kinds of questions that biologists can and have answered using evolutionary theory.
Discovering How Populations Change

The theory of evolution by natural selection describes a mechanism for species change over time. That species change had been suggested and debated well before Darwin. The view that species were static and unchanging was grounded in the writings of Plato, yet there were also ancient Greeks that expressed evolutionary ideas.
In the eighteenth century, ideas about the evolution of animals were reintroduced by the naturalist Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon and even by Charles Darwin’s grandfather, Erasmus Darwin. During this time, it was also accepted that there were extinct species. At the same time, James Hutton, the Scottish naturalist, proposed that geological change occurred gradually by the accumulation of small changes from pr.
