From moment to moment, a nurse leader’s day involves communication—with patients, families, colleagues, supervisors, and so on.

Research shows that the quality of the patient–provider relationship (Beach, Keruly, & Moore, 2006) and the communications between the patient and provider (Piette et al., 2003) influence a patient’s course of treatment and health outcomes. Unfortunately, there are many barriers to good communication in the patient–provider relationship. Health professionals debate about the best strategies for effective communication.
The initial steps of the Generalist Intervention Model support engagement and building of rapport between a patient and a social worker. Medical social workers are trained to be effective listeners and communicators. Given their unique skills, medical social workers are often called upon to support and navigate the relationships between patients and other providers on the health care team as advocates, liaisons, and mediators.
To prepare for this Discussion:

Coding, Categories and Themes
Saldaña (2016) coding is defined as one way of analyzing qualitative data. A code is a concept that is given a name that describes what is being said. Additionally, a code is primarily a word or short phrase that symbolically assigns a summative attribute for a portion of language-based or visual data (Saldaña, 2016). Whereas, categories is a collection of codes that share attributes, meaning and or intent. Furthermore, themes are developed from one or more categories into larger more overarching categories. Moreover, themes are summary statements and or conclusions. They show the relationship between two or more concepts. Analyzing raw data from the data collection methods employed by the researcher. Rubin & Rubin (2012) the core part analyzing data is to recognize, and identify concepts, themes, and then code.
O’Neil (2008) in qualitative research categories are developed to conceptually organize findings related to the phenomenon or the human experience understudy. In coding the transcripts of the two scholar for change videos and the telephone interview conducted with a Walden student a process was employed to facilitate data collection that included coding and categorization in order to identify an emerging theme. Furthermore, the Excel coding spreadsheet was used to code to assist with the organization of the data.
However, during the early analysis, the categories, themes, and examples were noted. The scholar of change video which highlighted Topper (2014) a scholar practitioner in pursuit of a doctoral degree in education, incorporated what she learned to impact positive social change in her local community. The independent research conducted aimed to address nature deficit disorder. Descriptive and In Vivo coding were used and the emerging themes identified centered on sustainability, positive social change, and becoming a change agent. Creating a Culture of Evidence-Based Practice
Evidence-based practice (EBP) in its most simplistic form is using the evidence, whether from clinical experiences or patient preferences, to make decisions that affect patient care positively (Polit & Beck, 2017). Evidence-based practice is essential for determining changes in practice that are needed to protect and provide safe care for patients. Nurses are the front-line of the healthcare system and are able to recognize and change policies and procedures. Therefore, nurses are responsible for sharing with their peers and co-workers the information obtained from their evidence-based research.
In order to make evidence-based changes, a dissemination plan needs to be in place. In our facility, our evidence-based practice nurse committee is responsible for teaching the staff on changes in practice. Once they have decided on the changes they present the information to the Emergency Department leadership. From there the changes are reported to the nursing staff through department meetings, bulletin boards, and online learning modules. This is based on the ACE Star Model of Knowledge Transformation which seeks to take research findings and use them to impact patient outcomes by using evidence-based care (Polit & Beck, 2017).
“Often in the dissemination phase, there are considerable barriers that exist. These barriers consist of prejudice toward findings, lack of approval from leadership, nurses attitudes, and the resources needed to make changes. Moore & Tierney (2019) found,
“an overarching theme of disconnection between research and evidence and the participants’ perceptions of contemporary nursing practice was underpinned by three themes:
1) We should be using it… but we’re not.
2) Employees suggested that research involvement was something left after graduation and no longer part of their day-to-day roles.
3) Research is other people’s business (p. 90).
In another report, it was suggested that evidence-based practice is challenging for nurses because of the pressures of a patient satisfaction culture and time constraints when caring for patients (Henderson & Fletcher, 2015). These barriers can only be overcome if nursing leadership has the courage to address them and help nurses see the positive benefits of evidence-based practice.
A culture of change is vital to making a significant improvement in the lives of patients. At this time nursing researchers are limited by a non-existent research culture leaving them nurses with the responsibility to develop that culture (Berthelsen & Holge-Hazelton, 2018). Creating an awareness of the research that is taking place by their peers removes the barriers of feeling not competent to participate. As nursing leadership, our role is to build a culture that creates curiosity and critical reflection ab.

Abstract. The scope of nursing informatics practice has been evolving over the
course of the last 5 decades, expanding to address the needs of health care
organizations and in response to the evolution of technology. In parallel, the
educational preparation of nursing informatics specialists has become more
formalized and shaped by the requisite competencies of the role. In this chapter,
the authors describe the evolution of nursing informatics roles, scope and focus of
practice, and anticipated role responsibilities and opportunities for the future.
Further, implications and considerations for the future are presented.

1. Introduction
By 2018, 22 million households will use virtual care solutions, up from less than a
million in 2013. Average (healthcare) visits among these adopter households will
increase from 2 per year in 2013 to 6 per year in 2018, which include both acute care
and preventive follow-up services in a variety of care settings—at home, at retail kiosk
or at work. [1]
Nursing informatics roles have taken many forms in focus and function over the
last decades; suffice it to say that they have not been consistently described or defined
in terms of scope of practice. At the time of this writing it is clear that role of nursing
informatics specialists will continue to evolve at an increasingly rapid rate in the
coming years. The unfolding of new health care paradigms will bring greater
connectivity between care providers and patients, include a wide array of emerging
technologies and an increasing emphasis on data analytics will make the integration of
informatics competencies into every area of nursing an imperative.
2. Brief history of roles of the past and present
The earliest and most common types of informatics work assumed by nurses has
included: oversight of organizational workload measurement systems, project
leadership, systems educator, and nursing unit or departmental information technology
resource. In many instances, these roles were enacted on the basis of a specific
identified organizational need and were often secondments to the Information
Technology Department. It was not unusual for these roles to have the designation of

Patient–Provider Communications
Research shows that the quality of the patient–provider relationship (Beach, Keruly, & Moore, 2006) and the communications between the patient and provider (Piette et al., 2003) influence a patient’s course of treatment and health outcomes. Unfortunately, there are many barriers to good communication in the patient–provider relationship. Health professionals debate about the best strategies for effective communication.
The initial steps of the Generalist Intervention Model support engagement and building of rapport between a patient and a social worker. Medical social workers are trained to be effective listeners and communicators. Given their unique skills, medical social workers are often called upon to support and navigate the relationships between patients and other providers on the health care team as advocates, liaisons, and mediators.
To prepare for this Discussion:
Consider patient–provider communications as an integral part of delivering social work services to patients. Review this week’s resources and think about how to deliver effective communications within the patient–provider relationship.
Post a description of the importance of patient–provider communication. Be sure to address the relationship between patient–provider communications and illness outcomes.
Identify a minimum of three factors that might lead to poor patient–provider communications.
Provide your rationale.
Explain the ways patient–provider communications might be improved.
Then, explain the role culture plays in patient–provider communications.
Finally, explain the roles of a social worker in assisting a patient to improve communications with other members of the health care team.

Starting the Research Process
Formulating a specific, applicable research problem statement is an important step in beginning a research process. The problem statement defines the focus of the research study, dictates what methods and tools will be used, and sets the stage for all subsequent elements of the research process. Because of this, it is necessary to put a great deal of thought into the problem statement to ensure that the rest of the research process will be well planned and appropriate to the problem at hand.
This week’s Discussion asks you to identify evidence-based practice problems that can be addressed using quantitative research methods. Based on the practice problem you select, formulate a quantitative research problem statement. In this Discussion, you are also given the opportunity to evaluate your colleagues’ problem statements. Please refer to this week’s Learning Resources for appropriate and scholarly examples of research problem statements and how they inform the rest of the research process.

Coding, Categories and Themes
Saldaña (2016) coding is defined as one way of analyzing qualitative data. A code is a concept that is given a name that describes what is being said. Additionally, a code is primarily a word or short phrase that symbolically assigns a summative attribute for a portion of language-based or visual data (Saldaña, 2016). Whereas, categories is a collection of codes that share attributes, meaning and or intent. Furthermore, themes are developed from one or more categories into larger more overarching categories. Moreover, themes are summary statements and or conclusions. They show the relationship between two or more concepts. Analyzing raw data from the data collection methods employed by the researcher. Rubin & Rubin (2012) the core part analyzing data is to recognize, and identify concepts, themes, and then code.
O’Neil (2008) in qualitative research categories are developed to conceptually organize findings related to the phenomenon or the human experience understudy. In coding the transcripts of the two scholar for change videos and the telephone interview conducted with a Walden student a process was employed to facilitate data collection that included coding and categorization in order to identify an emerging theme. Furthermore, the Excel coding spreadsheet was used to code to assist with the organization of the data.
However, during the early analysis, the categories, themes, and examples were noted. The scholar of change video which highlighted Topper (2014) a scholar practitioner in pursuit of a doctoral degree in education, incorporated what she learned to impact positive social change in her local community. The independent research conducted aimed to address nature deficit disorder. Descriptive and In Vivo coding were used and the emerging themes identified centered on sustainability, positive social change, and becoming a change agent. Moreover, the second scholar of change video reviewed Isaac (2014) a Walden University student in pursuit of a doctoral degree in the field of special education. He created an animated show to effect social change by inspiring children with special needs.
However, a descriptive, holistic, and In Vivo coding was applied and the emerging themes identified included perspectives and positive social change. Moreover, the telephone conducted with a Walden student in pursuit of a doctoral degree in management with a specialization in information system management shared her desire to make an impact on positive change as a result of her being a student at Walden. She did not think about positive social change in her community beyond her involvement with her ch.

Creating a Culture of Evidence-Based Practice
Evidence-based practice (EBP) in its most simplistic form is using the evidence, whether from clinical experiences or patient preferences, to make decisions that affect patient care positively (Polit & Beck, 2017). Evidence-based practice is essential for determining changes in practice that are needed to protect and provide safe care for patients. Nurses are the front-line of the healthcare system and are able to recognize and change policies and procedures. Therefore, nurses are responsible for sharing with their peers and co-workers the information obtained from their evidence-based research.
In order to make evidence-based changes, a dissemination plan needs to be in place. In our facility, our evidence-based practice nurse committee is responsible for teaching the staff on changes in practice. Once they have decided on the changes they present the information to the Emergency Department leadership. From there the changes are reported to the nursing staff through department meetings, bulletin boards, and online learning modules. This is based on the ACE Star Model of Knowledge Transformation which seeks to take research findings and use them to impact patient outcomes by using evidence-based care (Polit & Beck, 2017).
“Often in the dissemination phase, there are considerable barriers that exist. These barriers consist of prejudice toward findings, lack of approval from leadership, nurses attitudes, and the resources needed to make changes. Moore & Tierney (2019) found,
“an overarching theme of disconnection between research and evidence and the participants’ perceptions of contemporary nursing practice was underpinned by three themes:
1) We should be using it… but we’re not.
2) Employees suggested that research involvement was something left after graduation and no longer part of their day-to-day roles.
3) Research is other people’s business (p. 90).
In another report, it was suggested that evidence-based practice is challenging for nurses because of the pressures of a patient satisfaction culture and time constraints when caring for patients (Henderson & Fletcher, 2015). These barriers can only be overcome if nursing leadership has the courage to address them and help nurses see the positive benefits of evidence-based practice.
A culture of change is vital to making a significant improvement in the lives of patients. At this time nursing researchers are limited by a non-existent research culture leaving them nurses with the responsibility to develop that culture (Berthelsen & Holge-Hazelton, 2018). Creating an awareness of the research that is taking place by their peers removes the barriers of feeling not competent to participate. As nursing leadership, our role is to build a culture that creates curiosity and critical reflection ab.

Abstract. The scope of nursing informatics practice has been evolving over the
course of the last 5 decades, expanding to address the needs of health care
organizations and in response to the evolution of technology. In parallel, the
educational preparation of nursing informatics specialists has become more
formalized and shaped by the requisite competencies of the role. In this chapter,
the authors describe the evolution of nursing informatics roles, scope and focus of
practice, and anticipated role responsibilities and opportunities for the future.
Further, implications and considerations for the future are presented.

1. Introduction
By 2018, 22 million households will use virtual care solutions, up from less than a
million in 2013. Average (healthcare) visits among these adopter households will
increase from 2 per year in 2013 to 6 per year in 2018, which include both acute care
and preventive follow-up services in a variety of care settings—at home, at retail kiosk
or at work. [1]
Nursing informatics roles have taken many forms in focus and function over the
last decades; suffice it to say that they have not been consistently described or defined
in terms of scope of practice. At the time of this writing it is clear that role of nursing
informatics specialists will continue to evolve at an increasingly rapid rate in the
coming years. The unfolding of new health care paradigms will bring greater
connectivity between care providers and patients, include a wide array of emerging
technologies and an increasing emphasis on data analytics will make the integration of
informatics competencies into every area of nursing an imperative.
2. Brief history of roles of the past and present
The earliest and most common types of informatics work assumed by nurses has
included: oversight of organizational workload measurement systems, project
leadership, systems educator, and nursing unit or departmental information technology
resource. In many instances, these roles were enacted on the basis of a specific
identified organizational need and were often secondments to the Information
Technology Department. It was not unusual for these roles to have the designation of

Perhaps it was inevitable that Pope Francis’ comments on the Church’s position on scientific theories such as the Big Bang and evolution would cause a stir. In his address to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, the Pope cautioned against the image of God the creator as “a magician, with a magic wand”, arguing that belief in both theories around the beginnings of the universe and the birth of humankind are consistent with the Catholic faith.
“The Big Bang, which is today posited as the origin of the world, does not contradict the divine act of creation; rather, it requires it”, he stated. Similarly, he argued, “evolution of nature is not inconsistent with the notion of creation because evolution pre-supposes the creation of beings which evolve.”
Yet despite further murmurings that Pope Francis was beginning (yet another) revolution in Catholic doctrine, it must be pointed out – the Pope’s declaration on either theory has not broken with established Catholic belief in the slightest.

In 1969, Millon proposed 8 personality prototypes that could be conceptualized at
lower levels of severity than the level of the personality disorders. These personalities
were fit into a theoretical system that emphasized the strength of the interpersonal at-
tachment and the mode of accommodation. Disorders such as schizophrenia and de-
pression were pictured as a decompensation of the basic personality. This article traces
the evolution of Millon’s theory from the original inception, through the influence of
the 3rd and 4th editions of theDiagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders,
and onto its present form. Now visualized as resulting from 3 polarities, the model has
expanded the number of personalities to include 3 additional prototypes.
Through a book entitledModern Psychopathology(1969),Theodore Millon pro-
posed a new classification for emotional or psychiatric disorders. The foundation of
the system was made up of eight personality prototypes borrowed from the psychi-
atric nosology that was current at the time, the second edition of theDiagnostic and
Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders(DSM–II; American Psychiatric Associa-
tion, 1952). The innovation was the way Millon described and conceptualized the
eight prototypes in the 1969 book and in another book that followed shortly thereaf-
ter (Millon & Millon, 1974).
First, Millon (1969) wrote less pathological versions of personality disorders of
theDSM–II,creating “personality patterns of mild severity” (p. 220). In each case,
he set his descriptions to characterize three elements for each of the eight personal-
ity patterns: behaviors, self-perceptions, and intrapsychic processes.
Second, Millon fit his personality prototypes into a logical and coherent clas-
sification scheme. To organize the eight personality prototypes, Millon focused
on the kind of interpersonal relationships that the individual typically established
and the mode with which the person achieved his or her accommodation with

Introduction
All species of living organisms—from the bacteria on our skin, to the trees in our yards, to the birds outside—evolved at some point from a different species. Although it may seem that living things today stay much the same from generation to generation, that is not the case: evolution is ongoing. Evolution is the process through which the characteristics of species change and through which new species arise.
The theory of evolution is the unifying theory of biology, meaning it is the framework within which biologists ask questions about the living world. Its power is that it provides direction for predictions about living things that are borne out in experiment after experiment. The Ukrainian-born American geneticist Theodosius Dobzhansky famously wrote that "nothing makes sense in biology except in the light of evolution" (Dobzhansky 1964, 449). He meant that the principle that all life has evolved and diversified from a common ancestor is the foundation from which we understand all other questions in biology. This chapter will explain some of the mechanisms for evolutionary change and the kinds of questions that biologists can and have answered using evolutionary theory.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
