JENS – 6:30
Welcome to the 2017 Science in Practice Reception
[Introduce yourself, including name, title, etc.]
Boehringer Ingelheim’s commitment to the swine industry is represented through our platform - Start Healthy. End Strong. This is our promise – to partner with you and your producer customers to provide tools and resources to help get pigs off to their healthiest start possible to help reach their full potential.
This platform also aligns with Boehringer Ingelheim’s support of swine industry veterinary leaders in their pursuit of knowledge and science to drive innovative herd health solutions.
We are very excited to be the new sponsors of the Allen D. Leman Science in Practice Award.
JENS – 6:35
As some of you may have heard me say this morning, the Science in Practice Award is given out annually to a veterinarian who has demonstrated promising research as it relates to swine production and disease, and who has worked to apply and adapt scientific research in the field.
This year’s recipient, Dr. Bob Thompson of PIC North America, has been at the forefront of applying PRRS biosecurity measures in a practical way.
He helped develop the best testing practices for sampling boar studs to locate the PRRS virusnd worked to develop PRRS biosecurity recommendations for transportation.
Most recently, Bob’s efforts have focused on elimination of the influenza virus from sow herds.
It’s my pleasure to introduce Dr. Bob Thompson, the recipient of the 2017 Science in Practice Award.
DR. BOB THOMPSON – 6:40
[Dr. Thompson comes to podium and shares a few remarks.]
[Dr. Thompson passes microphone back to Jens.]
JENS – 6:45
Congratulations again to Dr. Thompson on that well deserved recognition.
Though this night is about celebrating the great work being done in the swine industry, next we’re going to take a moment to remember a man we lost this year who helped make this event what it is today.
To do that, please welcome Dr. Perle Boyer from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine.
PERLE – 6:50
[Perle says a few words about Bob and what he meant to the industry, to the U of M, and to her personally.]
To remember Bob tonight, we put together a tribute video with some snapshots of his life that I’m going to play for you now.
[Advance to next slide, video will play automatically.]
VIDEO – 6:55
[Perle steps down from podium while video plays but stays nearby.]
PERLE – 7:00
[Perle discusses how the U of M wanted to create something that honors Bob’s memory and helps continue the work he was so passionate about during his career.]
[Advance to next slide when you first mention the Morrison Swine Innovator Prize by name]
PERLE – 7:05
[Perle displays this slide momentarily but then advances to next slide relatively quickly to give overview of Morrison Swine Innovator Prize]
PERLE – 7:05
[Perle gives overview of Morrison Swine Innovator Prize]
[Close with the following:]
Tonight we want to capture your memories of Bob for use in future materials related to the Morrison Swine Innovator Prize.
I know there are many people in this room who worked with him and knew him both on a personal and professional level.
There’s a video booth set up over near the elevators you took to get up here.
Please take a minute sometime this evening, don’t be shy, and visit the video booth to help us capture what Bob meant to you.
If you’re having trouble thinking of anything specific, there are people in the booth who will ask you questions and help jog your memory.
[Advance to next slide.]
PERLE – 7:10
On behalf of the University of Minnesota and Boehringer Ingelheim, thank you for being here tonight.
Please enjoy the rest of the reception.
