Here is an illustration of cover crops. The rye was seeded at a very low rate (1/2 bu/a) the fall before. No herbicides were applied in this picture. You can clearly see where the kochia plant rolled across the field. Through competition and allelopathy the rye as provided very good control of the kochia. The cost of the rye was about $3/a much less than any herbicide. The rye also provides other benefits such as helping to manage salinity and excess water.
