4. Title Connotations
I believe the best font style for my magazine
will be Lemon milk from dafonts.com because
it is very similar to the style of NME my
magazine of inspiration and carries through
the similar genre of the new indie different
looking text which my magazine focuses on
(New music from indie bands and artists)
I have chosen this title because I am passionate about
finding new bands and artists who are yet to be discovered
by major record labels. Within my magazine I want to
include these artists as I believe that with the popularity of
my magazine it will help the artists/bands grow and gain a
strong support which will enable them to get a record label
deal and help there careers progress to where they belong.
I have used white and black because white stands for purity
which I want the music within my magazine to be as well as
the interviews and reviews my writers will be producing.
Black has been used as it is the colour of unknown which is
what some of the bands and artists will be when they first
appear in the issue.
5. Hand drawn Drafts Front Cover SHUTTERS
The masthead for my magazine will
be SHUTTERS and will be in the
Lemon Milk font style I am going to
make the font colour white as it
follows the house style of
magazines of inspiration like Q and
NME
The strapline for my magazine is
new music discovered in which I
want my magazine to focus on
new artist and bands upcoming in
British Music industry
The barcode is in the bottom right
corner with the social media sites
my magazine will be on keeping
readers up to date with latest news
and information about what's going
to be in the next issue
By having another two images in
the top right corner it can quickly
establish what other bands feature
within the magazine and are
available as a poster. This is
another way of getting readers by
offering free posters inside the
magazine
The puff promotion I have included
on the front cover shows that you
have a chance to win a prize if you
purchase and read the magazine.
The promotion I have offered on
this draft are tickets to see Alt-J live
which is a very popular band after
there newly released album being
very popular across the country
giving the Richard Dyer Star
Appeal to Readers purchasing the
magazine
The main headline and image
for my magazine will be one of
the leading rock/indie artist
e.g. Arctic Monkeys with lead
singer Alex Turner being the
focus of the interview inside
the magazine and double page
spread.
6. Hand drawn draft (DPS) SHUTTERS
I have decided to place the
interview on both the left and
ride hand side of the page
because the interview has a lot of
content I believe the reader will
want to know about and this is
the only way it can be put onto
the DPS. The font colours will be
red for the questions and black
for the answer as red is the house
colour of my magazine and black
is and easy to read colour on a
white background.
At the bottom of the page in the
middle I will have the social
media sites and issue no. to show
where to get the latest news and
information for the magazine
and what other issues they can
purchase if the have not read the
magazine before.
The page number I have chosen for the
double page spread is 49-50 because this is
directly in the middle of the page and it is
what NME also do `Repeat` Steve Neal
1980 By having the dps in the middle of the
magazine it allows the reader to reach the
middle and then carry on reading the whole
The stand first font my
magazine is a introduction
about what the Killers have
been doing for the last ten
years and what they have
done to get where they are
now and the interview will
lead onto what they want to
do in the future.
The main headline for the
double page spread is `A
decade of history` as I
interview about what hey
have done in the last ten
years and what they are
looking to do in the future
and goals the y have set to
reach.
The main image for the DPS is to be in the
middle of page as it represents that the
artists tis the centre of attention and
everyone is looking to him to see what the
future of The Killers holds.
7. Hand drawn Drafts Front Cover OFF THE RADAR
I have included a puff
promotion at the top of the
page next to the masthead
because I believe that this is
were it is most likely to catch
the readers attention or
potential customer. Also by
using a bright yellow for the
puff promotion background it
makes my magazine stand out
to other competitors next to
one another.
The main headline and image
for my magazine will be one of
the leading artist e.g. Slipknot
and the lead singer looking
down the camera with a close
up shot as this is a very
common technical code used
by Kerrang! Repeat-Steve
Neale 1980
The barcode is in the bottom right
corner with the social media sites my
magazine will be on keeping readers
up to date with latest news and
information about what's going to be
in the next issue
I have included cover lines
on both sides of the main
image because I feel that
starting from the top left
corner in the puff
promotion the readers eye
line will flow from left to
right which is why the
cover lines on the left are
higher to those on the right
hand side . The cover lines
for my magazine will also
have the ‘star appeal’ to
attract rock fans because
this will strengthen their
idea to purchase the
magazine as it includes
more bands and artists
which they want to find out
the latest news/reviews
about.
8. Hand drawn draft (DPS) OFF THE RADAR

light grey is the house colour of
my magazine and black is and
easy to read colour on a light
grey background.
I will use the largest font size
for main headline because I
have seen this in other
versions of my inspiration
(Kerrang!) so I will repeat
this as it catches the readers
eye quickly and they can
already establish what the
interview s about from
reading the main headline

13. House Style (SHUTTERS)
The colours that I will use in my magazine will hold consistent
of red white and the image background as it is for my front
cover of the magazine.
I will have red text for the headline which will be on the top of
the page and spread across the middle of the page. Hopefully
when my magazine becomes more popular I will be able to
cover some of the masthead like Kerrang! and NME do.
Red- It is associated with energy, power, determination as
well as passion, desire, and love.
White- It is associated with purity which is what Shutters
want to be as we produce an honest interview in our magazine
with hard working musicians to get there story across.
14. House Style (Off The Radar)
The colours I will use for my Off The Radar magazine will be
red and black because it will be a more heavy rock magazine
like Kerrang!
I will have red text for the headline which will be on the top of
the page and spread across the middle of the page. The
background I will use for my magazine throughout will be
black.
Black- relates to the hidden, the secretive and the unknown,
and as a result it creates an air of mystery. It keeps things
bottled up inside, hidden from the world. To find new artist
and bands which my magazine is focusing on.
Red-It is associated with energy, power, determination as well
as passion, desire, and love.
15. Target Audience
From research at
http://www.mediauk.com:8080/magazines/36168/nme
/readership-figures
It shows me that 93.1% of the readers are from the age of
15 to 34 with a weekly reading audience of 269000
compared to the 35+ weekly audience of 23,000 6.9%.
By having a young audience the magazine could attract
them with brighter colours and images to entice them
from looking at the front colour. In contrast to this the
35+ age group may not be attracted to Shutters because
the music is “Too young” for them.
16. Katz Uses & Gratifications
My magazine is able to fit 3 of the uses and gratifications
and these are:
Inform and Educate- This is because when you read my
magazine you are able to inform and educate yourself
with information you will not find in any other magazine
with the exclusive interviews.
Personal Identity- You are able to relate and replicate
your role models behaviour and interests to the
band/artist.
Entertainment- The readers is able to escape and relax
when reading my magazine as well as emotional release
17. Hartley’s 7 subjectivities
The 7 subjectivities are age, gender , class, ethnicity,
self-image, nation and family.
For my magazine as mentioned previously the class
that my magazine is targeted at is A to C1.
Another of Hartley's subjectivities that is relate to my
magazine is the age of reader. From my primary and
secondary research I have found out that the
audience will be from 15 to 34 with it being a
potentially 92% of my readership.
18. Hartley’s 7 subjectivities
Following on from secondary research at
http://www.mediauk.com/magazines/36168/nme/r
eadership-figures
It shows that 65.7% of the readers for NME are male
and as it is my main competitor i should try and aim
the content and advertisements more at males
compared to females as this is a larger potential
audience from the male gender.
19. Hartley’s 7 subjectivities
The target audience for my readership are aged
between 15-34 this is from research into a similar
and magazine of inspiration NME
http://www.abc1demographic.co.uk Furthermore I
also carried out my own primary research will
solidified these results as 93% of the population I
asked that were interested in this genre of magazine
were aged between U18-24.
20. Target Audience-Hartley’s 7 subjectivities
The 7 subjectivities are age, gender , class, ethnicity, self-image,
nation and family.
For my magazine the age group that I am targeting my magazine for
are aged between 16 to 35 as this is what age group from my
primary research were most popular. Furthermore NME readership
figures also match back this up as over 60% of there readers are
from this age range.
Following on I carried out primary research to see which gender
would be most interested into a new indie/rock magazine and
61.54% were male which
shows that for my magazine I am able
to identify what advertisements and
competitions should be carried out to
keep this audience purchasing the
monthly issue.
21. Target Audience-Hartley’s 7 subjectivities
The social class I look to sell my magazine is the A-C1
because in my first year of sales I am starting in
London and then expanding from their. Currently
London is the country's most expensive living rates
which means that those can afford to live in London
are from London and this is where my target
audience for year 1 will be living. However with the
cheap price I am looking to expand the magazine
sales to other cities in the country including Leeds,
Manchester and Liverpool where living rates are
cheaper and can also afford my magazine every
month.
22. Socio Economic Needs
Socio-Economic Needs
In recent years there has been an increase of adults who
fall into the A,B and C1 Socio economic group which
means that the spending power of a growing audience is
getting larger meaning that potentially my magazine is
going to grow faster than first anticipated with this
research. I researched this from (Source at the bottom of
the page) Over 60% of readers are from the ABC1 band of
demographic 70% Of the readers are aged 15 to 34.
