 The reason I have chosen The colours that I will use in
my magazine will hold consistent of red white and the
image background as it is for my front cover of the
magazine. I will have red text for the headline which will
be on the top of the page and spread across the middle of
the page. Hopefully when my magazine becomes more
popular I will be able to cover some of the masthead like
Kerrang and NME do. Red- It is associated with energy,
power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love.
White- It is associated with purity which is what Shutters
want to be as we produce an honest interview in our
magazine with hard working musicians to get there story
across.

Masthead
My magazine is called Shutters this has been inspired by market research I
carried out in my LO2 presentation as it was the most popular name chosen
by the audience.
I believe the best font style for my magazine will be Lemon milk from
dafonts.com because it is very similar to the style of NME my magazine of
inspiration and carries through the similar genre of the new indie different
looking text which my magazine focuses on (New music from indie bands and
artists)
Font style Ideas
This is the masthead font style I have chosen
because I believe that it is similar to my magazine
of inspirations font and Steve Neale repeat 1980
has proven that this is a popular style of font.
I did select this font as a potential font style
however I think that it is too much like the Kerrang
style of music and heavier rock music than my
rock/indie music magazine
This is similar to the Lemon Milk font however I
did not chose this one as my final font because I
see it as being too young to appeal to my target
audience age group.
Other Font styles
 For the DPS I used the Myriad Pro font style for the
interview and main headline because I felt that this
was the best suited style to the magazine and genre
of music that I am producing. It is also of a similar
style to my magazine of inspiration NME in which I
am `Repeat Steve Neale 1980’. Below is an
example from my DPS interview to show you the
Myriad Pro Font style.

artists and Bands in Britain
who are not signed yet who

For my main image on the front

the first issue I release of the

With the puff promotion

The stand first for my
DPS is about the
recent tour of the UK
they have been on and
are discussing the
crowds they met and
performed for and
then leads into the
interview about what
they are planning for
the future and bigger
shows and arenas they
want to play next time
they are in the UK.
For the main headline
I have chosen the
swiss721 font which is
the same as the front
colour headline as I
think it stands out and
is eye catching to the
reader as well as fitting
to the genre.
The main image for my magazine is the lead
singer for the band while he was signing at
one of their recent gigs in London
There will be social media links at the bottom of
the page next to the magazine issue number so
that readers can keep up to date with latest news.

Hand drawn Drafts Front Cover
The masthead for my magazine
will be SHUTTERS and will be in
the Lemon Milk font style I am
going to make the font colour white
as it follows the house style of
magazines of inspiration like Q and
NME
The puff promotion I have
included on the front cover shows
that you have a chance to win a
prize if you purchase and read the
magazine. By having the prize near
the middle of the magazine it
makes the reader read the whole
magazine until the end.
The strapline for my magazine is
new music discovered in which I
want my magazine to focus on
new artist and bands upcoming in
British Music industry
The main Headline I have chosen is
`The Killers` This will be in a bold red font
across the middle of the page which
follows the house style I have created for
the magazine also by using red it also
symbolises love and passion which my
magazine is for music.
The barcode is in the bottom right
corner with the social media sites
my magazine will be on keeping
readers up to date with latest news
and information about what's going
to be in the next issue
By having another two images in
the top right corner it can quickly
establish what other bands feature
within the magazine and are
available as a poster. This is
another way of getting readers by
offering free posters inside the
magazine
The main image on my magazine will
be one of the leading indie/rock artists of
the last ten years `The Killers` this gives
the magazine the star appeal to attract a
early large audience to the magazine.
Hand drawn draft (DPS)
The main headline for my
magazine I have chosen is `Alex
Turner` on the myriad pro font
style because it is very simple
and basic which Alex Turner
represents about the way he
makes music and doesn’t want
the attention on him as it is a
band. It will be in black font
colour because this is matches
his band logo.
The Interview will be on
the right hand side of the
page because it is split up
evenly with half of the page
and makes it easy to read.
The font colour I will be using
for this will be Read for
questions which matches the
background colour for
SHUTTERS masthead and
black for the answers to
establish the difference.
The stand first font my magazine is a
introduction about what the Arctic Monkeys
have done over the past year and just
recapping what s happening and an
introduction what the interview will be
about
The page number I have
chosen for the double page
spread is 49-50 because this
is directly in the middle of
the page and it is what NME
also do `Repeat` Steve
Neal 1980 By having the
dps in the middle of the
magazine it allows the
reader to reach the middle
and then carry on reading
the whole magazine
The main image for the DPS
is the artist with their arms out
with no background which will
convey the simplistic life that
the band want to live but are
getting frustrated with
everything the media attention
they are getting for things away
from music
Hand drawn Drafts Front Cover
The masthead for my magazine
will be SHUTTERS and will be in

going to make the font colour white

The puff promotion I have
included on the front cover shows
that you have a chance to win a

magazine. The promotion I have
offered on this draft are tickets to
see Alt-J live which is a very
popular band after there newly
released album being very popular
across the country giving the
Richard Dyer Star Appeal to
Readers purchasing the magazine
The main headline and
image for my magazine will be
one of the leading rock/indie
artist e.g. Arctic Monkeys with
lead singer Alex Turner being
the focus of the interview
inside the magazine and
double page spread.
Hand drawn draft (DPS)
I have decided to place the
interview on both the left and
ride hand side of the page
because the interview has a lot of
content I believe the reader will
want to know about and this is
the only way it can be put onto
the DPS. The font colours will be
red for the questions and black
for the answer as red is the house
colour of my magazine and black
is and easy to read colour on a
white background.
At the bottom of the page in the
middle I will have the social
media sites and issue no. to
show where to get the latest
news and information for the
magazine and what other issues
they can purchase if the have not
read the magazine before.
The page number I have chosen for the
double page spread is 49-50 because this is
directly in the middle of the page and it is
what NME also do `Repeat` Steve Neal
1980 By having the dps in the middle of the
magazine it allows the reader to reach the
middle and then carry on reading the whole
The stand first font my
magazine is a introduction
about what the Killers have
been doing for the last ten
years and what they have
done to get where they are
now and the interview will
lead onto what they want to
do in the future.
The main headline for
the double page spread is
`A decade of history` as I
interview about what hey
have done in the last ten
years and what they are
looking to do in the future
and goals the y have set to
reach.
The main image for the DPS is to be in
the middle of page as it represents that
the artists tis the centre of attention and
everyone is looking to him to see what the
future of The Killers holds.
Hand drawn drafts analysis
 The reasons for laying out an using the house style
colours for the pages is consistent throughout all of the
designs is because I have been inspired by established
brands such as Q and NME. The front cover is very
similar to NME with a repeat Steve Neale 1980 of
where I have placed the masthead and the background
colour to what to match as well like Q (Red). On the
double page spread have included the date of when the
magazine has been realised because I have seen this in a
heavier rock genre magazine Kerrang! But I have
included the issue number so that readers can keep up to
date on how many have been released and what other
issues they are able to purchase.

Promotion (Above the Line)
 As my magazine is an Indie/rock magazine I will be using
above the line promotion to reach out to the appropriate
audience and I believe by selecting the right times and
platforms to advertise it can potentially help my
readership grow immediately
 I aim to advertise my magazine on the radio with a 30
second advert on XFM London as this is where we are
starting to sell the magazine £650
 The second method of above the line promotion I will be
using is Internet pay per click advertisement because it is
an ever growing space for advertisement there is an
endless amount of people who will see it and can be low
cost as it is £0.03 per click with Google.
Promotion (Below the Line)
 Exterior Location Marketing
 I will be hiring staff to handout flyers and
promotions to people outside gig venues and events
to promote the launch of the magazine. By using this
simple yet effective method and selecting the right
events and gigs to hand out the promotions to it can
potentially bring the business more income with new
readers and mouth of word.
Cross Media Convergence
 On my front cover I will have links to my social media pages
(Twitter and Facebook) as well as the magazine website which
has information such as what's going to be in the latest issue
of the magazine and future editions as well as release dates for
the magazine. They will be placed in the bottom right hand
corner of the page inside the barcode box so it has a
professional image and finish to the page.
 On my double page spread it will also include social media
page links at the bottom of the page in left and right hand
corners.
 The importance of including these links to my page as social
media population is increasing it is more important to have
followers or likes so that readers can keep up to date with
content and release dates.
Content of Issue 1
 For the first issue the content of my magazine will be a mixture of
interviews with bands and artists as well as reviews and tour dates.
 My main DPS story is an interview with ‘The Killers’ the reason I have
chosen this band for the first interview for my magazine is because they
have a Star Appeal-Richard Dyer which will be able to generate a large
readership for my first issue as well as fit for purpose as they are an
indie/rock band which my magazine is targeting fans of this specific genre
of music.
 Another feature in my magazine will be a review of the top 20 tracks of the
month which have been released. The reason I am including this in my
magazine is because it is a very popular feature in magazines such as NME
Q and Kerrang which are well established market leaders in their own
specific genre of music.
 Finally I am including tour dates in my magazine as it make it very clear
and easy for the reader to see when and where there favourite
bands/Artists are performing within the next month in London (As the
magazine will only be initially launched in London)
Market Place
 For year one of my magazine SHUTTERS I am
looking to start of selling the magazines in London
and with the social media page already becoming
very popular quickly I will look to expand the areas
of the country including cities such as Manchester
Nottingham and Bristol. By the start of year 2 I will
hope to have generated a regular readership in these
areas and then start selling the magazine in Scotland
(Glasgow and Edinburgh) and Wales (Cardiff and
Swansea)
Target Audience
 From research at
http://www.mediauk.com:8080/magazines/36168/nme
/readership-figures
 It shows me that 93.1% of the readers are from the age of
15 to 34 with a weekly reading audience of 269000
compared to the 35+ weekly audience of 23,000 6.9%.
By having a young audience the magazine could attract
them with brighter colours and images to entice them
from looking at the front colour. In contrast to this the
35+ age group may not be attracted to Shutters because
the music is “Too young” for them.
Price
 The cost of the magazine will be £3.50 per issue I
think that this is a realistic and reasonable because
comparing it to other monthly music magazines such
as Q and the weekly price of an NME magazine with
the 100 pages it is a reasonable and affordable rice
for the target demographic of reader that will be
more likely to purchase my magazine.
Target Audience- Katz's Uses and Gratifications
 Inform and Educate- This is because when you read
my magazine you are able to inform and educate
yourself with information you will not find in any
other magazine with the exclusive interviews.
 Personal Identity- You are able to relate and
replicate your role models behavior and interests to
the band/artist.
 Entertainment- The readers is able to escape and
relax when reading my magazine as well as
emotional release
Target Audience-Hartleys Subjectivities
 The 7 subjectivities are age, gender , class, ethnicity, self-image,
nation and family.
 For my magazine the age group that I am targeting my magazine for
are aged between 16 to 35 as this is what age group from my
primary research were most popular. Furthermore NME readership
figures also match back this up as over 60% of there readers are
from this age range.
 Following on I carried out primary research to see which gender
would be most interested into a new indie/rock magazine and
61.54% were male which
shows that for my magazine I am able
to identify what advertisements and
competitions should be carried out to
keep this audience purchasing the
monthly issue.
Target Audience-Hartleys Subjectivities
 The social class I look to sell my magazine is the A-C1
because in my first year of sales I am starting in
London and then expanding from their. Currently
London is the country's most expensive living rates
which means that those can afford to live in London
are from London and this is where my target
audience for year 1 will be living. However with the
cheap price I am looking to expand the magazine
sales to other cities in the country including Leeds,
Manchester and Liverpool where living rates are
cheaper and can also afford my magazine every
month.
Target Audience-My Reader Profile
 A stereotypical reader of NME according to the NRS
figures states:
 Over 60% of readers are from the ABC1 band of
demographic 70% Of the readers are aged 15 to 34.
 In recent years there has been an increase of adults
who fall into the A,B and C1 Socio economic group
which means that the spending power of a growing
audience is getting larger meaning that potentially
my magazine is going to grow faster than first
anticipated with this research.
Source: http://www.abc1demographic.co.uk
Brand Ideology
 The slogan for NME is "Thirst for music“. The
connotations of this slogan shows that they have a
desire for needing music as badly as dehydration and
acts as there water which is a basic essential need in
life we need everyday to survive. This shows the
length they go to for finding and listening to new
music.
Proposal’s
 Please see the blog Page
Conclusion
 Following on from LO1 where I researched into an
established music magazine (NME) I felt confident
that I could start to generate ideas for my own music
magazine by creating mood boards to see what
similarities I can use `Repetition’- Steve Neale 1980
 Furthermore by creating hand drawn drafts for my
magazine it gave me a greater understanding of what
genre and house style I would like to focus my
magazine on.

  • 4. Mood Board – Analysis  The reason I have chosen The colours that I will use in my magazine will hold consistent of red white and the image background as it is for my front cover of the magazine. I will have red text for the headline which will be on the top of the page and spread across the middle of the page. Hopefully when my magazine becomes more popular I will be able to cover some of the masthead like Kerrang and NME do. Red- It is associated with energy, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love. White- It is associated with purity which is what Shutters want to be as we produce an honest interview in our magazine with hard working musicians to get there story across.
  • 5. Mind Map Colour Scheme Price £1 £1.50£1.75 £2.50 £3.00 Medium Close up Weekly-The magazine will be produced and distributed all in one week with the latest news and gigs Monthly- A larger magazine with information and articles from the previous month and upcoming months gigs/festivals
  • 6. Draft Interview  Please see the blog page
  • 7. Masthead My magazine is called Shutters this has been inspired by market research I carried out in my LO2 presentation as it was the most popular name chosen by the audience. I believe the best font style for my magazine will be Lemon milk from dafonts.com because it is very similar to the style of NME my magazine of inspiration and carries through the similar genre of the new indie different looking text which my magazine focuses on (New music from indie bands and artists)
  • 8. Font style Ideas This is the masthead font style I have chosen because I believe that it is similar to my magazine of inspirations font and Steve Neale repeat 1980 has proven that this is a popular style of font. I did select this font as a potential font style however I think that it is too much like the Kerrang style of music and heavier rock music than my rock/indie music magazine This is similar to the Lemon Milk font however I did not chose this one as my final font because I see it as being too young to appeal to my target audience age group.
  • 9. Other Font styles  For the DPS I used the Myriad Pro font style for the interview and main headline because I felt that this was the best suited style to the magazine and genre of music that I am producing. It is also of a similar style to my magazine of inspiration NME in which I am `Repeat Steve Neale 1980’. Below is an example from my DPS interview to show you the Myriad Pro Font style. Extract from my DPS showing the font style of Myriad Pro
  • 11. Graphic Layout (Front Cover) SHUTTERS Puff Promot ion Secondary Headline Barcode Masthead Cover Lines Main ImageCover Lines Cover Lines Strapline The main headline I have chosen for my front cover is The Killers in a bold font Myriad Pro with a drop shadow effect on it. In a red font colour with signifies love and passion which the band have for music and want to express this through the interview in my DPS. The strapline for my magazine is New music discovered which is what I want to feature my magazine as I feel that there a lot of artists and Bands in Britain who are not signed yet who should be and I want my magazine to give them the audience the should have. For my main image on the front cover it will be the leading singer from The Killers as for the first issue I release of the magazine it will generate a large target audience due to the Richard Dyer Star Appeal With the puff promotion being in the top left corner below the strapline in a bright circle it stands out from the page being bright and eye catching because if someone Is deciding what magazine they are going to read and they have a chance to win a to prize which is eye catching they are more likely to purchase my magazine.
  • 12. Graphic Layout (DPS) SHUTTERS Main Headline I n t e r v i e w I n t e r v i e w I n t e r v i e w Interview Pull Quote Date & Issue Date & Issue Date & Issue Page no. Page no. I have included social media links at the bottom of the page so that readers can keep up to date with what new content will be in the magazine for next months issue The page number I have decided to use as the same place as NME also by placing the DPS in the middle of the magazine I am Repeating Steve Neale 1980 by following this brand identity it conveys the realism between NME and SHUTTERS I have split the interview over both pages because I feel that if I just used one page for the interview it would look to cramped and unprofessional. Also by using both sides of the DPS it enabled me to ad more questions and answers from the interview The main image is going to be in the centre of the page because I believe that by having the image in the middle it puts the focus on the artist or band. Also I will look to do this for future issues to give the brand identity I am looking to get The main headline for my interview is The Killers in the Myriad Pro font because I like to keep it simplistic for the reader with the font being easy to read and setting out how the interview will be with a simple Q and A. The stand first for my DPS is about the previous ten years of where they have started and where they are now leading into the interview about where they want to go in the future after they just picked up best festival act award.

The strapline for my magazine is Undiscovered talent which is what I want to feature my magazine as I feel that there a lot of artists and Bands in Britain who are not signed yet who should be and I want my magazine to give them the audience the should have. For my main image on the front cover it will be the leading singer from Atilla as for the first issue I release of the magazine it will generate a large target audience due to the Richard Dyer Star Appeal The puff promotion for my magazine is in the top right corner in a bright yellow circle as it is a very bright and vibrant colour that grabs the attention of the reader
  • 14. Graphic Layout (Off The Radar) Main Headline Main Image Stand first and Interv iew Pull Quote Inter view Int ervi ew Int ervi ew Band Logo The stand first for my DPS is about the recent tour of the UK they have been on and are discussing the crowds they met and performed for and then leads into the interview about what they are planning for the future and bigger shows and arenas they want to play next time they are in the UK. For the main headline I have chosen the swiss721 font which is the same as the front colour headline as I think it stands out and is eye catching to the reader as well as fitting to the genre. The main image for my magazine is the lead singer for the band while he was signing at one of their recent gigs in London There will be social media links at the bottom of the page next to the magazine issue number so that readers can keep up to date with latest news. The page number I have decided to use as the same place as NME also by placing the DPS in the middle of the magazine I am Repeating Steve Neale 1980 by following this brand identity it conveys the realism between NME and SHUTTERS I have split the interview over both pages because I feel that if I just used one page for the interview it would look to cramped and unprofessional. Also by using both sides of the DPS it enabled me to ad more questions and answers from the interview
  • 15. Hand drawn Drafts Front Cover The masthead for my magazine will be SHUTTERS and will be in the Lemon Milk font style I am going to make the font colour white as it follows the house style of magazines of inspiration like Q and NME The puff promotion I have included on the front cover shows that you have a chance to win a prize if you purchase and read the magazine. By having the prize near the middle of the magazine it makes the reader read the whole magazine until the end. The strapline for my magazine is new music discovered in which I want my magazine to focus on new artist and bands upcoming in British Music industry The main Headline I have chosen is `The Killers` This will be in a bold red font across the middle of the page which follows the house style I have created for the magazine also by using red it also symbolises love and passion which my magazine is for music. The barcode is in the bottom right corner with the social media sites my magazine will be on keeping readers up to date with latest news and information about what's going to be in the next issue By having another two images in the top right corner it can quickly establish what other bands feature within the magazine and are available as a poster. This is another way of getting readers by offering free posters inside the magazine The main image on my magazine will be one of the leading indie/rock artists of the last ten years `The Killers` this gives the magazine the star appeal to attract a early large audience to the magazine.
  • 16. Hand drawn draft (DPS) The main headline for my magazine I have chosen is `Alex Turner` on the myriad pro font style because it is very simple and basic which Alex Turner represents about the way he makes music and doesn’t want the attention on him as it is a band. It will be in black font colour because this is matches his band logo. The Interview will be on the right hand side of the page because it is split up evenly with half of the page and makes it easy to read. The font colour I will be using for this will be Read for questions which matches the background colour for SHUTTERS masthead and black for the answers to establish the difference. The stand first font my magazine is a introduction about what the Arctic Monkeys have done over the past year and just recapping what s happening and an introduction what the interview will be about The page number I have chosen for the double page spread is 49-50 because this is directly in the middle of the page and it is what NME also do `Repeat` Steve Neal 1980 By having the dps in the middle of the magazine it allows the reader to reach the middle and then carry on reading the whole magazine The main image for the DPS is the artist with their arms out with no background which will convey the simplistic life that the band want to live but are getting frustrated with everything the media attention they are getting for things away from music
  • 17. Hand drawn Drafts Front Cover The masthead for my magazine will be SHUTTERS and will be in the Lemon Milk font style I am going to make the font colour white as it follows the house style of magazines of inspiration like Q and NME The strapline for my magazine is new music discovered in which I want my magazine to focus on new artist and bands upcoming in British Music industry The barcode is in the bottom right corner with the social media sites my magazine will be on keeping readers up to date with latest news and information about what's going to be in the next issue By having another two images in the top right corner it can quickly establish what other bands feature within the magazine and are available as a poster. This is another way of getting readers by offering free posters inside the magazine The puff promotion I have included on the front cover shows that you have a chance to win a prize if you purchase and read the magazine. The promotion I have offered on this draft are tickets to see Alt-J live which is a very popular band after there newly released album being very popular across the country giving the Richard Dyer Star Appeal to Readers purchasing the magazine The main headline and image for my magazine will be one of the leading rock/indie artist e.g. Arctic Monkeys with lead singer Alex Turner being the focus of the interview inside the magazine and double page spread.
  • 18. Hand drawn draft (DPS) I have decided to place the interview on both the left and ride hand side of the page because the interview has a lot of content I believe the reader will want to know about and this is the only way it can be put onto the DPS. The font colours will be red for the questions and black for the answer as red is the house colour of my magazine and black is and easy to read colour on a white background. At the bottom of the page in the middle I will have the social media sites and issue no. to show where to get the latest news and information for the magazine and what other issues they can purchase if the have not read the magazine before. The page number I have chosen for the double page spread is 49-50 because this is directly in the middle of the page and it is what NME also do `Repeat` Steve Neal 1980 By having the dps in the middle of the magazine it allows the reader to reach the middle and then carry on reading the whole The stand first font my magazine is a introduction about what the Killers have been doing for the last ten years and what they have done to get where they are now and the interview will lead onto what they want to do in the future. The main headline for the double page spread is `A decade of history` as I interview about what hey have done in the last ten years and what they are looking to do in the future and goals the y have set to reach. The main image for the DPS is to be in the middle of page as it represents that the artists tis the centre of attention and everyone is looking to him to see what the future of The Killers holds.
  • 19. Hand drawn drafts analysis  The reasons for laying out an using the house style colours for the pages is consistent throughout all of the designs is because I have been inspired by established brands such as Q and NME. The front cover is very similar to NME with a repeat Steve Neale 1980 of where I have placed the masthead and the background colour to what to match as well like Q (Red). On the double page spread have included the date of when the magazine has been realised because I have seen this in a heavier rock genre magazine Kerrang! But I have included the issue number so that readers can keep up to date on how many have been released and what other issues they are able to purchase.

  • 24. Promotion (Above the Line)  As my magazine is an Indie/rock magazine I will be using above the line promotion to reach out to the appropriate audience and I believe by selecting the right times and platforms to advertise it can potentially help my readership grow immediately  I aim to advertise my magazine on the radio with a 30 second advert on XFM London as this is where we are starting to sell the magazine £650  The second method of above the line promotion I will be using is Internet pay per click advertisement because it is an ever growing space for advertisement there is an endless amount of people who will see it and can be low cost as it is £0.03 per click with Google.
  • 25. Promotion (Below the Line)  Exterior Location Marketing  I will be hiring staff to handout flyers and promotions to people outside gig venues and events to promote the launch of the magazine. By using this simple yet effective method and selecting the right events and gigs to hand out the promotions to it can potentially bring the business more income with new readers and mouth of word.
  • 26. Cross Media Convergence  On my front cover I will have links to my social media pages (Twitter and Facebook) as well as the magazine website which has information such as what's going to be in the latest issue of the magazine and future editions as well as release dates for the magazine. They will be placed in the bottom right hand corner of the page inside the barcode box so it has a professional image and finish to the page.  On my double page spread it will also include social media page links at the bottom of the page in left and right hand corners.  The importance of including these links to my page as social media population is increasing it is more important to have followers or likes so that readers can keep up to date with content and release dates.
  • 27. Content of Issue 1  For the first issue the content of my magazine will be a mixture of interviews with bands and artists as well as reviews and tour dates.  My main DPS story is an interview with ‘The Killers’ the reason I have chosen this band for the first interview for my magazine is because they have a Star Appeal-Richard Dyer which will be able to generate a large readership for my first issue as well as fit for purpose as they are an indie/rock band which my magazine is targeting fans of this specific genre of music.  Another feature in my magazine will be a review of the top 20 tracks of the month which have been released. The reason I am including this in my magazine is because it is a very popular feature in magazines such as NME Q and Kerrang which are well established market leaders in their own specific genre of music.  Finally I am including tour dates in my magazine as it make it very clear and easy for the reader to see when and where there favourite bands/Artists are performing within the next month in London (As the magazine will only be initially launched in London)
  • 28. Market Place  For year one of my magazine SHUTTERS I am looking to start of selling the magazines in London and with the social media page already becoming very popular quickly I will look to expand the areas of the country including cities such as Manchester Nottingham and Bristol. By the start of year 2 I will hope to have generated a regular readership in these areas and then start selling the magazine in Scotland (Glasgow and Edinburgh) and Wales (Cardiff and Swansea)
  • 29. Target Audience  From research at http://www.mediauk.com:8080/magazines/36168/nme /readership-figures  It shows me that 93.1% of the readers are from the age of 15 to 34 with a weekly reading audience of 269000 compared to the 35+ weekly audience of 23,000 6.9%. By having a young audience the magazine could attract them with brighter colours and images to entice them from looking at the front colour. In contrast to this the 35+ age group may not be attracted to Shutters because the music is “Too young” for them.
  • 30. Price  The cost of the magazine will be £3.50 per issue I think that this is a realistic and reasonable because comparing it to other monthly music magazines such as Q and the weekly price of an NME magazine with the 100 pages it is a reasonable and affordable rice for the target demographic of reader that will be more likely to purchase my magazine.
  • 31. Target Audience- Katz's Uses and Gratifications  Inform and Educate- This is because when you read my magazine you are able to inform and educate yourself with information you will not find in any other magazine with the exclusive interviews.  Personal Identity- You are able to relate and replicate your role models behavior and interests to the band/artist.  Entertainment- The readers is able to escape and relax when reading my magazine as well as emotional release
  • 32. Target Audience-Hartleys Subjectivities  The 7 subjectivities are age, gender , class, ethnicity, self-image, nation and family.  For my magazine the age group that I am targeting my magazine for are aged between 16 to 35 as this is what age group from my primary research were most popular. Furthermore NME readership figures also match back this up as over 60% of there readers are from this age range.  Following on I carried out primary research to see which gender would be most interested into a new indie/rock magazine and 61.54% were male which shows that for my magazine I am able to identify what advertisements and competitions should be carried out to keep this audience purchasing the monthly issue.
  • 33. Target Audience-Hartleys Subjectivities  The social class I look to sell my magazine is the A-C1 because in my first year of sales I am starting in London and then expanding from their. Currently London is the country's most expensive living rates which means that those can afford to live in London are from London and this is where my target audience for year 1 will be living. However with the cheap price I am looking to expand the magazine sales to other cities in the country including Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool where living rates are cheaper and can also afford my magazine every month.
  • 34. Target Audience-My Reader Profile  A stereotypical reader of NME according to the NRS figures states:  Over 60% of readers are from the ABC1 band of demographic 70% Of the readers are aged 15 to 34.  In recent years there has been an increase of adults who fall into the A,B and C1 Socio economic group which means that the spending power of a growing audience is getting larger meaning that potentially my magazine is going to grow faster than first anticipated with this research. • 35. Brand Ideology  The slogan for NME is "Thirst for music“. The connotations of this slogan shows that they have a desire for needing music as badly as dehydration and acts as there water which is a basic essential need in life we need everyday to survive. This shows the length they go to for finding and listening to new music.
  • 37. Conclusion  Following on from LO1 where I researched into an established music magazine (NME) I felt confident that I could start to generate ideas for my own music magazine by creating mood boards to see what similarities I can use `Repetition’- Steve Neale 1980  Furthermore by creating hand drawn drafts for my magazine it gave me a greater understanding of what genre and house style I would like to focus my magazine on.
