Health& Safety in the Printing Industry
Manual Handling
There are an estimated 120,000 workers in the printing employees. The most common
types of accidents are manual handling the latest statistics are manual handling 27% slips
and trips 22% and machinery 22%. The first and most common accident that happens
within printing is manual handling; this is tasks such as, lifting carrying and pushing/pulling
without causing injury.
To make sure that the risk is reduced all
employees must make sure that they have
been fully trained about manual handling. The
training for manual handling involves the
regulations of 1992, how to identify unsafe
practices, appropriate method of manual
handling when either pushing, pulling carrying.
Not only having training about manual handling
they must also be shown to how to use appropriate equipment to help them reduce the risk
of injury. The equipment they are trained on includes, Free running or mechanical
conveyors, Swing arm hoists and slings at reel stands, Reel conveyor trolleys, Cylinder and
roller trolleys, Reel shaft trolley and Sack trucks.
Slips and Trips
This is the second highest accident type
within the printing industry and is often in
the production area (Warehouse) however
it also occurs in the car park and stairways.

This can be because of poor tidiness or maintenance and weather. To keep the warehouse
as hazard free as possible guidelines have been set to make sure that they; Keep walkways
well marked and clear of pallets and other obstructions, Identify specific places for pallet
unloading/loading, Provide suitable bins for disposal of strapping, wrapping, paper,
Designate storage areas for equipment such as trolleys and lift trucks, Avoid trailing cables,
provide cable covers for temporary arrangements and Repair potholes in floor surfaces.
Machine Safety
The most common injuries are lacerations, cuts and bruises, fractures/dislocation and
crushing injuries to the fingers or hand. Most printing accidents occur when either making
the magazine trying to clean or free the equipment and
maintenance. The injuries that occur with machines are
often because they are in contact with dangerous moving
equipment or because some parts of the machine have
become intertwined within itself. Before using the printing
machinery workers must check that they have; Chose the
right machine for the job, Checked that the machine is fit for
purpose and is fully working, carry out a risk assessment for
yourself and other employees to use and provide any
protective guards for the machine when operating with it.

Independent Press Standards Organisation
Editors Code of Practice
The Independent press standards organisation is in control with applying code of practice
which is a contractual agreement between the IPSO newspaper, magazine and electronic
news publishers. They have 16 clauses in total at the moment and the ones which affect my
magazine are Accuracy, Privacy, Harassment, Intrusion into grief or shock and
Discrimination.
Accuracy- I must make sure that all of the information that is published in my magazine is
neither inaccurate nor misleading. If my magazine does produce some misleading or

inaccurate information I must make sure that the change is made immediately once noticed
and a full apology must be published following the editors code of practice. To make sure
that the information is not misleading it must be stated and made clear whether it is
comment, conjecture and fact.
Privacy- This code is in place so that everyone is entitled to respect his/her private life and if
a journalist does report anything private about an individual they must have permission to
publish the news. This includes a written story or photograph that has not had permission
to be taken.
Harassment- For my magazine it is very important that the journalists do not intimidate or
persistently pursuit them asking them questions phone calls or constantly taking images. If
they ask to stop/leave they must cooperate to that. To make sure that the editors are not
breaking the code the editors of the magazine must make sure that they follow them and
also take care not to use information from false sources.
Intrusion into grief or shock- If an article within my magazine contains any news or
information about grief or shock the journalist must make contact with sympathy and
discretion. This does not stop the journalist from reporting about the news however they
must make sure that caution with the article must be taken carefully.
Discrimination- As a publishing magazine I must make sure that the information within the
magazine must avoid detrimental or derogatory to an individual’s race religion gender or
any disability. Details about an individual’s race religion or disability can only be published if
it is relevant to the story that is being reported.

Legal Issues
Copyright
Before producing a magazine I will need to be aware of the laws which are put in place to
make sure that you need to be able to be sure that you have contacted companies and
requested there acceptance to use their logo’s or images from a specific website/page to
use in the magazine I will be publishing.

Following on another law is that you need to be able to show proof of your receiving a letter
from the company to use their logo so that you are not in trouble for copyright laws and if
you have proof of the acceptance then you can use that logo in the magazine.
To copyright my magazines name I have to purchase a copyright registration through a
company who offer the certificate of copyright so I am able to put this on my magazine and
therefore stops other people and businesses from using any of my content or name.
Following on here is an example of a registration you will need to complete to make sure
that the magazine is copyrighted. This is also a helpful website as they have an interactive
service where you can ask questions with an immediate response.
Contract Challenges
Contract challenges are a set of legal challenges which stand up from the contracts and
licensing law. First of all if the company has to allow you to use their logo or specific image,
you have to go through a set of stages of contract signing. This is because once you sign the
contract you are under control by the company and cannot go back so therefore if you
decide to plagiarise without consent then you can be in trouble with the press complaints
office and could be taken to court.

Intellectual Property
Intellectual Property is the law that has been put in place sot that if any patents copyright
and trademarks earn any recognition or financial success fromwhat they create. A
trademark is an area of the Intellectual property in which can be either a design symbol logo
or name. To see whether a brand has been trademarked or not it will either have a R
symbol or TM to show that it is a registered brand/organisation. Registering in the UK only
protects the business in that country so if my business is to grow there is an extra European
Union trademark which will have to be used which covers all of the EU countries.

Data Protection Act
With my magazine it will store personal data about artist and musicians who have been
interviewed and some information may have not been published in the magazine. This is
means that the business is a data controller and must advise the Information
commissioner’s office that we are responsible for the availability integrity and security
under the data protection act formed in 1998. All of the information that is published to
the commissioner’s office and published in the magazine must be handled fairly so that any
of the information gathered must have initially gained permission to let the individual know
what the information they give is going to be used for (An article in my magazine).
Furthermore the individual who’s information the business is holding within the data
protection act must be informed and they have rights so that they can:
 Access a copy of their information which is held
 A right to object to processing their data
 A right to have inaccurate personal information destroyed or changed

directors within the organisation. The director of the business will also be an employee so
that the personal income they generate from working at the magazine and business income
are separate paying tax. Once a director/s are in place there are then a further 5
legislations that every company must follow. The business must have an address for the
company, have at least one director, one shareholder, agreed rules about how the business
will be run and the corporation tax for the business income.
