Combating Climate Change
The Need for Smart and Sustainable Infrastructures!
Current level is at 1.2 C. finding the global solutions to reduce
emissions by 45% by 2030 and reach net
zero by 2050.
In Europe, transportation is the main source of carbon emissions:
- It represents 27% of total emissions in the EU
- 45% of these emissions come from cars.
Road transport is the main contributor to these emissions: 77%.
In France: 121 million metric tons of CO2 in 2018.
The European Green Deal aims at reducing the emissions of
the transport sector by 90% by 2050
Road congestion has economic, environmental, and human costs:
• Commuter: time, fuel, quality of life, vehicle maintenance
• Safety: crashes, emergency response times
• Freight: supply chain delays, fuel, shipping costs
• Environmental & Public Health: CO2, fuel, death and illness
• Economic Competitiveness: access to jobs, airport delays
Every 24s, someone dies on the road = 1.35 Million Road deaths every
year (source: World Health Organization)
United Nations Intergovernmental Panel
on Climate Change commits to limit
increase in global surface temperature to
1.5 to 2 C by 2050.
“By 2050, the Earth’s population is expected to increase from 7 to 10 billion and the
world economy is projected to nearly quadruple, creating a growing demand for energy
and natural resources. This new economy is projected to use 80% more energy by
2050.”
“ 55% of the world’s population lives in urban areas and this percentage is expected to
rise to 68% by 2050 (.. addition of 2.5 billion people to urban areas worldwide.).
Additionally, freight volumes are expected to grow by 40% during this time period”
A recent study published in Environmental Research Letters found that 100 cities
drive 18% of global CO2 emissions

5G Technology across 4 high-emitting sectors could create annual emissions
savings equal to taking 1 in 7 cars (over 35 million cars) off EU roads.
GHG Emissions (Indirect) Abatement Thanks to 5G
By 2030: 550MtCO2 each year = 15% of total EU emission in 2017
“Communications technology, digitalization, and
cloud technologies are central to the transition to
a zero-emissions economy.”
“The avoided emissions that they enable is
substantial.”

• Road Safety: 6% CO2 Reduction
• CACC (Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control): with controlled intersections,
thanks to C-V2X: 6% CO2 reduction
• Ecodriving
• on Motorways (avoiding congestion): 6% CO2 reduction
• Other roads: 3% - 7% CO2 reduction.
• Highest for [50-80Km/h]
• Intelligent Intersection:
• Avoiding (complete) stops
• Truck: 22% CO2 reduction on provincial intersections
• Car: 13% - 21% CO2 reduction
• VRU (Vulnerable Road Users) Protection
• This would encourage Cyclists
• Public Transportation prioritization
• V2X RSU Traffic light would prioritize public transportation, thus
encouraging its use, then reducing CO2

A New Era is Coming…
Besides usual supportive specialized (fine-tuning) and
conversational applications, the multimodality opens new
applications for Control Command Centers, thanks to
retrieval & generation of information based on limited
sources (since mapping with other ‘sensing’ has been
trained).
Furthermore, introducing new Modalities is feasible and
facilitated, with vision model still as the keystone (image-
paired data).
1) Text Generation & retrieval
2) Conversation
3) Summarization
4) Multi-Lingual

LLM Telecom: Wireless Sensing and Communication
LLM for Wireless Imaging
• Conventional wireless sensing is performed through DL, which is
performed in a supervised fashion, maps received wireless signals’
characteristics into 2D images.
• Generative visual AI models, like DALL-E, CLIP and VQGAN, and
GPT Image, target to construct high-quality images from textual
descriptions.
• Adopting visual large models at the Telecom domain → create high-
resolution 3D visualization of the wireless environment using wireless
data.
• Objective: Develop foundation models that are capable of converting
wireless signals to images [for improved contextual knowledge and
enhanced communication schemes], and vice-versa.
