Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat "According to Time magazine, September 27, 1993, violence in video games is on the rise especially with the release of Mortal
Kombat. Over 50 million children all over the United States brought this violence into their homes. The parents and other adults of these children
finally decided that the video games in the U.S. had gone too far." Mortal Kombat was the first game that brought blood and gore into the video
game world. Mortal Kombat started in the arcades it was such a hit, they made it into a game you could buy for personal use. Critics raved over it
when it was first introduced, saying it was too violent for kids and it needed to be taken off the shelves. This game appealed to many people because

Mortal Kombat was one of the first of many video games that got controversy for being too violent. This game also led the way for countless other
violent video games. I feel as if no one would have made a big deal out of the violence there would not be problems that there are today. As they put
stricter ratings on the games it only made people want it more. This game was so popular that there was a movie made after it and all the characters
seemed to come to life on the big screen. As the critics put the whole concept of violent video games down, all it did was feed a fire to burn and made

Mortal Women In The Odyssey
The Odyssey a classic mythological poem composed by Homer. The Odyssey constructs a view of men, women, the divine, and the mortal. The men
portrayed in the Odyssey tend to be dominant, heroic, and powerful. However, the women are given mixed character roles for example some are
portrayed as submissive and meek where as others are divine and determined. Through the Odyssey we are exposed to many different views of women
of both the divine and of the mortal. Yet, although we have the divine women and the mortal we are still projected with the idea of the men being in
charge, and two hierarchy's one within the divine and the other within the mortal. Athena is a divine goddess who is always disguised as a man.

These women are the cleaners for Penelope. Throughout the Odyssey they are not mentioned much; however, once Odysseus returns home then the
maids are a key character in the Odyssey. In book 22: Slaughter in the Hall the maids are put to death by being hung due to the fact that they were
'sluts' and they lay with the suitors, thus they were not loyal. Since the maids were disloyal to the household and Odysseus sentenced them to death.
The maids were given a vulnerable, unimpressive and shameful death. "They would be hung like doves or larks in springГ©s triggered in a thicket,
where the birds think to rest– a cruel nesting, So now in turn each women thrust her head into a noose and swung, yanked high in the air, to perish
there most piteously. Their feet danced for a little, but not long."(Book XXII page 424 line 520) Through this quote we find a helpless, unherioc, and
embarrassing death. The maids to do not have a choice of life or death like the suitors do. As upsetting as this quote is, it still gives a touch of
femininity by using the claim "dancing around". Homer did not have to state dancing around he could have stating that they swayed from side to side,
but rather he states that they danced. Through this word choice we relate it dancing to women, but also to a non–dominant and vulnerable

Background:

packs for the original and two expansions for GTA IV and including a multiplayer title. The games have been released for various platforms,
including the PC, PSX, PS2, Xbox, PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, Xbox One, GBC, DC, GBA, PSP, DS, iPhone and Android with all but two of the games

Each of the seven playable characters enter the tournament for different reasons (some for revenge, while others for glory). The main protagonist is
Liu Kang, a Shaolin Monk of the White Lotus society who wants to bring honor back to the Mortal Kombat tournament. The main storyline was
expanded through comics and sequels, involving the evil forces of Outworld, who use the tournament in order to take over Earth (known as
Earthrealm) ("Mortal Kombat")."
Introduction:
"Roughly 68 percent of all American households play computer or video games. Of this, 25 percent are under the age of 18. While the average age of
a typical video game player is 35, it does show a large number of individuals are playing video games before college and while they are still at home,
living with their parents and attending grade school." Media misrepresents video games as a violent distraction for its audiences. Stereotypes of games
like Grand Theft Auto or Mortal Kombat have dramatically changed the video game world.
When playing violent video games most players can distinguish the difference between the game and reality, but for others their game and realities are
the same. According to Tom Mcgrath, violent shooting games might not be just a game to some people. Playing a

Ethos In Mortal Man
Have you ever wondered who was loyal to you no matter the situation? If you're riding with your homeboys and they commit a crime would you be
loyal and hold them down? When you are doing something for the right cause do you see yourself in the shadow of someone who has taken a similar
route? The song "Mortal Man" written by Kendrick Lamar discusses loyalty, interpersonal relationships, and discrimination to people of color
throughout the song. This song is one of many that has had the opportunity to have been archived into the Harvard Library along with the completed
album "To Pimp A Butterfly". In this essay I will research, explore, AND dissect the song "Mortal Man". Kendrick Lamar had many different meanings
and goals behind the song,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Theme Of Money In My Mortal Enemy By Willa Cather
There are many themes and symbols shown throughout "My Mortal Enemy" by Willa Cather, from love to marriages, and choices. The motif I want
to analyze is the motif of money. Money is used throughout the whole book, it used to help persuade decisions, it characterizes their lavish lifestyle,
and it is what caused Oswald to become Myra's mortal enemy.
Myra, being an orphan child was raised by her great–uncle, John Driscoll, who grew up a poor boy and made his fortune employing contract labor in
the Mississippi swamps (10). The novel describes their lavish lifestyle in which they lived in a grand house on a ten–acre park and was the finest
property in Parthia. Mr. Driscoll had fast horses that made national record, and Myra would throw balls and garden–parties, where she would have the
band play their music (10). Myra's aunt said that Myra had "everything: dresses and jewels, a fine riding horse, a Steinway piano", and how her uncle
took her to Ireland and had her painted by one of the famous painters there (10–11).
At a youthful age, Myra did not care about money, though she cared about love. She fell in love with a gentleman named Oswald Henshawe, but Mr.
Driscoll had an old grudge of some sort with Oswald father, and Driscoll did not like the idea Myra and Oswald being together. Oswald had left Parthia
and went to college at Harvard; he then moved to New York and after two years he was in the position to get married (12). Then he wrote to John
Driscoll for Myra's hand in

The Ghost Of The Late King Hamlet

father didn 't reveal himself to anyone besides Hamlet because he knew his son would avenge his death allowing him to receive divine in Heaven.
Throughout the Elizabethan Era no one in that time period knew how much of an influence they would have on all of the world. In Caffery's words,
"[The] Elizabethan Era was a period of time from 1558 to 1603 known as the golden age in English history. Queen Elizabeth I reigned over England
while all around the arts flourished in the society" (Caffrey). William Shakespeare was one of the most iconic writers in this era, for his use of all the
genres like history, tragedy, and comedy in his plays and sonnets. During this time people became more comfortable with this unknown that most plays
and sonnets included like purgatory, but they were still not comfortable with talking about ghosts walking on the earth.
Even though each religious leader in the Elizabethan Era set how their people should have thought about Purgatory, they all had the same definition of
what it was. Purgatory is defined as, "'the prison in which ghosts were normally incarcerated, though they might be allowed to escape now and then to
briefly haunt those of the living whose zeal in their behalf was insufficient" (Low). Asoul that is repenting their sins in Purgatory is called a Poor Soul

Mortal Women In The Aeneid
Through Vergil's characterization of mortal women in the Aeneid, he strengthens his narrative and deepens its poetic effect by displaying them
repeatedly as expenses necessary for the founding of Rome. The first woman sacrificed to the greater cause of Rome is Aeneas's wife, Creusa, who
was left behind in the burning of Troy and died. The second woman abandoned was Dido, who Aeneas had to leave behind heartbroken so he could
fulfill his fate. The third women lost for Rome was Camilla, the warrior–maiden who was killed by a Trojan because she was the Trojan's enemy in
battle for Italy. These three mortal women were the expenses to found Rome, emphasized by Vergil by characterizing all them as obstacles of Aeneas's
fate and giving them the similar outcome of death. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If he brought his Trojan wife to Italy, then they would just be reestablishing the Trojan race, which was not his fate. Aeneas needed to marry another
woman from another nation, so they could have children that would be not solely Trojan; however, Aeneas had a wife. Vergil could not have
polygamy in his epic because he under the family–orientated Emperor Augustus. Emperor Augustus was trying to encourage family values back into
Rome, and Vergil was aware of this. To avoid this complication, Vergil wrote Creusa off by having her perish in the fall of Troy. She needed to die in

Mortal Kombat Argument
The first game to come to a lot of peoples minds when prompted with "violent video games" is Mortal Kombat. Mortal Kombat is known for being
extremely violent and gruesome with their death and fighting scenes. Spines being torn out, blood spraying out of bodies, organs being ripped out, its
no wonder it got so much attention even with its first game. In fact, Mortal Kombat is the reason that the Entertainment Software Rating board, or the
ESRB ratings, exists at all. Since then it's been a constant thought in peoples minds that the things we see and play in video games can lead to violent
natures outside in the real world. There are two sides to the argument and both seem to have credibility. I'm of the opinion that violent video games don't

Everyone Is Mortal
Everyone will one day face mortality. This was also true for Prince Prospero in the short story by Edgar Allen Poe, "The Masque of the Red Death".
In it is a version of the black plague, which is called the "Red Death". Prince Prospero secludes a thousand friends and himself from the death around
them, but finds that he cannot avoid the inevitable. The author uses many literary devices to develop the theme of unavoidable death. One of the
devices used is imagery, which evokes the events of the story clearly in the reader's mind. Another is allegory, which is used by Poe to create another
story within his, as it is filled with double meanings. Lastly, Poe utilizes symbolism to give the story meaning. Edgar Allan Poe uses imagery, allegory,
and symbolism to add dimension to his story and to express the theme that one cannot escape death, no matter how hard one tries.
Poe uses imagery to paint a picture in readers' mind, create a mood, and emphasize the significance of certain objects. One can envision the amazement
of the chambers, which had "...a tall and narrow Gothic window...of stained glass whose color varied in accordance with the...hue...of the chamber into
which it opened" and was lit up by "...a brazier of fire that projected its rays through the tinted glass" (421). One can also imagine the way the crowd
slows down to a pause when the "...chiming of the clock... [causes] disconcert and tremulousness and meditations" (423). These descriptions keep

St. Augustine 's Confessions Essay
When a Catholic thinks of sin, the following questions come to his or her mind: Are my actions morally right? Am I disobeying God? Defying God's
rule is a sin, and seeking forgiveness is pivotal, mainly because it shows that one is aware that he or she has committed a sin, and therefore, he or she
must seek redemption. For example, consider the following seven deadly sins: pride, envy, gluttony, lust, anger, greed, and sloth ("The Seven Deadly
Sins," 1). In Saint Augustine's Confessions, readers get the chance to learn about sin through Saint Augustine's experiences of sin confrontations and
temptations. For instance, in Confessions, the pear tree is depicted as a sin, a symbol of pleasure–Saint Augustine's original sin. How so? Well, stealing
the pears with his friends is Saint Augustine's first memory of sinning. Saint Augustine sees a parallel connection between the pear tree and the tree of
the knowledge of good and evil–the original sin. In this paper, the idea of sin in Saint Augustine's story of the pear will be applied to Chaucer's
"Pardoner's Prologue and Tale." Thus, allowing readers to realize that the Pardoner embodies sin as Augustine defines it.
In Chaucer's " The Pardoner's Prologue and Tale," the Pardoner is a medieval preacher whose ultimate goal is to earn money by soliciting offerings
and granting pardons. The prologue begins with the Pardoner describing everything that Chaucer believes to be corrupt with the church of his day. The

Rape And The Mortal Rapists
In ancient Greco–Roman mythic narrative rape is depicted as a normalised and often essential paradigm that is used to show the gods' dominance over
lesser beings. Numerous accounts represent the gods as having transcended the boundaries of justice and morality by highlighting their exemption from
prosecution for rape in contrast to mortal rapists, who cannot avoid punishment. Furthermore, aetiological–rape myths reveal that only the gods could
bring about creation through rape, whether it be the birth of divine offspring, the dawn of natural phenomena or the founding of new institutions. In
this light, the divine rapists are better than the mortal rapists because at least their penetration can prove productive for narrative continuity. ... Show

rapist, these differences providing support as to why rape by gods seems less punishable than compared to rape committed by mortal men. Much of
the Daphne and Apollo story carries a sense of excitement and titillation as Ovid replaces sexually explicit rape with descriptions of Daphne's beauty

Analysis Of Being Mortal
Being Mortal was an interesting book, it poses some very good questions, such as living independent as a senior, which identifies the desire of most
elderly people, to be able to have the freedom to choose how and where they're going to live. As pictured in the book, some of the facilities that
seniors are living in do not encourage independent living, or freedom of choice. Honestly, in some facilities people do die quicker, not from illness,
but lost of purpose. As people age, learning to except their limitations and physical changes may not be easy; trying to adjust mentally and emotionally
is difficult to say the least, changes none the less presents problems. For me, these first two statements by the author set the course... Show more content

How physicians participate at times in prolonging the natural course of dying while trying to fix what cannot be fixed. "The simple view is that

Death in one's life time is unavoidable. In a way those effected by death, die themselves but ultimately shed that part of their life to grow a new

The Negative Chain Of Effects Of Violence In The Media
No one can be protected from the constant bombardments of violence in the media. Violence has been apart of our world ever since the beginning
of time, and therefore has become a part of our daily lives. Acts of violence are ubiquitous and can be witnessed in myriad forms; whether it's on the
news, social media, films, shows, video games and even cartoons. A young child can watch gory films as well as play violent video games without
any adult supervision easily with no problem if he or she wanted to. Trying to avoid this scenario from happening would not only be fatuous but also
preposterous. Advanced technology has facilitated the access to any sort of violent content for any individual, with little to no boundaries. Violence
manifested in the media has caused a negative chain of effects in our society by promoting violence to children, changing our morality and encouraging
violence in real life.
With this object in mind, violence in the media is negatively influencing our society by constantly promoting vicious behavior to children in ample
forms, with no regulations what so ever. Violence has become one of the most popular and most favorite form of entertainment for young people from
these past generations. Currently, video games like Mortal Kombat and Grand Theft Auto are some of the popular gruesome video games among

Mortal Man Poem
Long ago there was a mortal man in love with the daughter of a water god; however, the water god did not approve of the mortal man. He was angry
with the mortal for wishing to take his daughter and marry her. To keep the mortal man and his daughter apart, the god created a long, tall hill that
stretched from horizon to horizon.. There were no dips, and it was impossible to climb.
It seemed hopeless, but the mortal man was clever. He would stop at nothing to reach his love, so he started to dig. The man dug and dug, creating long
tunnels through the hill. There were many tunnels because the man would reach a place he could no longer dig, and the wide expanse of hill was
confusing. Soon, dirt and rock piled up around the hill, creating slopes. It took years to finally dig through the hill to the other side. One he was

The Critique Of Hester Prynne In 'On The Scarlet Letter'
Throughout D.H. Lawrence's critique, "On the Scarlet Letter," Lawrence emphasizes the idea that Hester Prynne is condemned by today's society, as
well as the late Puritan society. He further criticizes her actions, willing to depict her to be a demon more than a simple sinner. D.H. Lawrence evaluates
Hester Prynne's flaws by using succinct diction, sarcasm, and biblical allusions. By utilizing succinct diction, D.H. Lawrence ridicules Hester in order
to expose the severity her sin. Lawrence simultaneously attacks Hester Prynne's character in a figurative manner as he refers to her as "[an]
Adulteress. Alpha. Abel, Adam. A" (Lawrence). In a figurative sense, Lawrence condenses his words in order to shoot Hester down with
characteristics that best describe her. He exposes her flaws through a series of attacks regarding her most prominent qualities: that she is an adulteress;
that she is a sinner who precedes the future generations; and that her sin is equal to that of Adam's original sin. It is through the words that dignify the
absolute worst of sinning in which Lawrence's negative outlook on Hester is revealed. Succinct diction that symbolize and refer to sin uncover
Hester's withdrawal from attaining the moral perfection that Puritans desire. Lawrence considers Hester's mortal sin as a reason that her life becomes
a failure, that "[her life] becomes a farce" (Lawrence). Lawrence is insightful in exposing Hester's flaws as, through his diction, he argues that her

However, he found himself attracted to a human with hair red as fire and passionate burning rubies for eyes. It was almost weird, the mortal man
almost reminded him of his father Akashi. The stranger was dressed in denim pants and a white T–shirt with a leather jacket loosely hugging his body.

Punishment that Befits the Sin
Dante's Inferno originally named The Divine Comedy or in modern Italian The Commedia , follows the contemporary Christian ethos by showing how
the consequences of man are equal to their sins; passed upon them in death. The physical sins that man does on earth if not repented of, will then
become their eternal consequence in Hell. Dante shows us in his travels through the circles of hell how this suffering is the direct and equal result of
their earthly sins. The sins of the cowardice, the lustful, gluttonous, greedy, angry, heretical, violent, fraudulent and treacherous have their bodies in
constant pain equivalent of the actions of their human bodies on earth. The thesis of this paper is to show how physical pain enacted upon corporeal
bodies in hell, are the logical consequence of sin on earth. I will show this by citing examples of sinners featured in The inferno that are tortured for the
sins in their respective layer of hell. The Inferno is based directly upon Dante's devout catholic nature. The inferno is mixed with the bible, roman
Catholicism, mythology and medieval tradition with a direct influence of 14th century roman Catholicism. The passage concerning purgatory is a
direct indoctrination from roman Catholicism and is not found anywhere in the bible. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches:
"All who die in God's grace, but still imperfectly purified,

Theme Of Violence In Video Games
Portrayal of violence in video games. Video games became a boom in 90's and keep on going becoming more complex and considered by many as a
form of art. Important theme raised by many critics is violence in video games and what happens when a person has lost the border between video
games and reality. If we go back to the beginning of gaming industry it's easy to notice that violent–based games form the majority of the content that
was produced. Just for example take a really popular and simple game – PacMan. Everyone played it and hope that you remember the main rule – if
PacMan is caught by "ghosts" – he's dead. But do ghosts really commit an act of violence over PacMan? There's no terrifying bloodbath going on the
screen of you PC. You just... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In FPS games you act as some hero – whom you don't see or see rarely during come cut scenes and assassinate, kill, perish, burn to the ground,
exterminate, blow up, slash with a sword, perform a stealth kill, shoot of limbs, dot eyes and do other stuff with your game opponents. Enemies in
the game can range from aliens to Nazi soldiers, from gang members to prehistoric animals, from funny looking but deadly ducks to zombies.
Gameplay encourages the player to act as quick and violent as he can. Violence is communicated by game producers as a necessary action to move
along gameplay. If the player doesn't act as he's intended to do – he's losing the game. The critics are blaming the game creators for putting too much
violence into the game. Game creators are opposing to them by putting age rating but this fluffy fight still rages on involving politicians, actor and
other guys who blame violence in video games. Critics try to attract psychologists to emphasize on that gamers are more likely to go outside and start
killing people, stealing cars and rampaging zoos – all the things you can do in GTA

Doctor Faustus and the Role that Sin plays in God's Divine...
Doctor Faustus and the Role that Sin plays in God's Divine Plan.
The nature of sin is brought up many times in the play Doctor Faustus. It seems that Faustus (like all of us) is damned. The question posed is; can we
as humans do anything to save ourselves from eternal damnation, or are we doomed from birth. The play deals with Faustus struggle to understand sin
and its effect on the human soul. There is a interesting scene where the seven deadly sins appear before Faustus. To understand the importance of the
seven deadly sins in this play, we must first learn what constitutes a sin. Once we grasp this, we can proceed to understand the role that sin has on the
play. Then we can determine whether or not we as individuals have any impact... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Jesus was asked what commandment in the law was the greatest. He replied: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with
all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The
whole law of Moses and the teachings of the prophets depend on these two commandments." (Matthew 22:37–40). Since the entire law of God is
according to the words of Jesus, this scripture is merely a commentary on the wonderful principles of love. If this is so, then sin should be defined in
terms of a lack of love, rather than as a formal law. According to this point of view a sin is any failure to love God and our fellow man with a perfect
heart, which then a lack of love would lead to certain attitudes and deeds which are displeasing to God. Keeping this in mind we can proceed to see
how sins are classified.
There are two categories of sin, mortal sin and venial sin. We commit mortal sins when we break a commandment of God in a serious manner, for
example, idolatry, adultery, murder, slander. These are all things that are contrary to the love that we owe God. Jesus taught that even looking at a
woman lustfully is a sin. Sin can be both committed on the inside (choices that we make in our minds) or on the outside (choices that are then carried
into action). A man who willfully desires to have sex, steal, murder
or some other mortal sin, has

Diverse Characters In Cassandra Clare's The Shadowhunter...
Cassandra Clare's works, The Shadowhunter Chronicles, are full of diverse characters, and for various reasons. One reason being that she believes it
is important for novels to have all different kinds of characters to reflect the world around us; because the world is diverse, the book she writes must
also be diverse. She strives to create relatable characters so that readers of any sexual orientation, race, or gender are able to identify with her works. For
example, Clare's choice of writing her main character as a young female was made because she would have wanted to read that as a teenager. Every
character is created in order to give people, especially those who are not as represented in the media, someone to look up to or relate to. Cassandra Clare
creates an important series for teenagers to read as they begin to discover who they are; the inclusion of racially diverse, LGBTQ+, and mentally
disabled characters in Clare's The Mortal Instruments and The Dark Artifices gives young readers a variety of different characters so that any reader
can see themselves in the novels.
First and foremost, I would like to emphasize how important it is to have representation in young adult novels. A large part of the reason that
teenagers read books is to read about someone that they can relate to. Being able to read about a character who has a lot in common with the reader
helps the reader to not only feel connected to the book and its characters, but also to feel as if someone is

Catholic Reflection
Many times in my before I went through the motions: attending mass on Sundays, participating in confession, when the school offered it, and praying
every so often. The Lord called to me many times but, during that time, in my life, I kept on holding onto certain sins and hiding them. I kept on
persisting in sin and felt no able to give up certain sins in my life. Most of the time I had little understanding of things in Catholicism such as not
receiving the Eucharist in the state of mortal sin and having to say all of your mortal sins in the confessional. After a while of continuing holding onto
to specific sins I finally confessed it and it felt uncomfortable saying a horrible thing I have personally done and I was embarrassed that I would do
such a thing. After going to this confession, one of my friends told me that as catholic we were to not receive the Eucharist in the state of mortal sin
and, at the time, I was very confused not knowing if what he was telling contained truth. To convince me my friend took me to a youth minister and she
explained this to me. At this point I started to realize more truth and learned of the difference between mortal andvenial sin. Learning of this leaded me
to a deeper understanding of truth and guided me to Christ. I learned that what was keeping me from being close to Christ and truly experiencing Him
was not utilizing the Sacrament of Confession and renouncing sin. All of this endowed me with a deeper appreciation from the

How Is Odysseus Mortal
Fellow teammates,
I understand that we are dead, and in the underworld, but I still want to recognize a special compeer. He was our saviour. It is the well–known
prodigious mortal Odysseus King and ruler of Ithaca. Throughout our voyage he has shown optimism and grit to return to Ithaca. He has never given

For first, he has never given up on or transgressions that has ended up with us all out of misery. I am sorry for him that he has supported us. If y'all

For the last reason, Odysseus is a stupendous mortal because his intelligence almost got us forward. What I mean by "almost" is because
remember when we ate that cattle? He warned us for this, but our stupidity kept us from staying alive and so we unfortunately passed away and

there are a few characters male gamers look up to, almost as much as Solid Snake or Mario. Here are the top five greatest females in video games!
Number Five: Kitana, Mortal Kombat
Princess Kitana made her official debut in Mortal Kombat II, and has fought strong ever since. Although 10,000 years old, she has the appearance of a
young woman. Where she isn't all about hand–to–hand combat, she relies on her Steel Fan weapon to tomahawk at other opponents making her one of
the most powerful females in Mortal Kombat, even more powerful than her evil twin Mileena.

Number Three: Madison Paige, Heavy Rain
Madison is one of the four protagonists in Heavy Rain, and is the most mysterious character in the game. Her character is portrayed as a 27–year–old
female photographer and a journalist, who is noted to have severe insomnia, believed to be from being a journalist in Iraq. Her strong personality truly
shined through while investigating "The Origami Killer," and keeping Ethan level–headed throughout the game.
Number Two: Kairi, Kingdom Hearts.
Although ignored greatly in the franchise, Kairi is one of the most important characters in the game. With Sora and Riku constantly going through
different ways to save her, it was not only cute, but implemented carefully in the game. Kairi alone, is a very annoying character, but on the contrary,
her plotline with Sora was a tearjerker, whether it be their goodbye, or even the montage at the end of the first Kingdom

Theme Of Being Mortal
Being Mortal and its Consequences
1.Introduction
In Being Mortal, Atul Gawande uses his experiences as a surgeon, professor and public health professional to discuss many facets of Western
end–of–life care and the process of growing old in a modern age. Overall, I have found that three overpowering themes in this novel are security versus
autonomy, a need for pragmatism surrounding the concept of death, and our medicalized society's devaluation of hospice and palliative care. Regarding
these themes, I have chosen to reflect on my grandparents, death in the West and social role valorization, respectively.
2.Security Versus Autonomy An especially relevant theme to Gawande's Being Mortal is the spectrum of security versus autonomy.... Show more

Personally, the importance of one's freedom in life is drawn upon by the lives of my grandparents. Although my maternal grandmother and grandfather
are 75 and 77 years of age, respectively, they continue to live fulfilling and productive lives. It is not to be said that they have not suffered from
problems related to aging, such as my grandfather suffering from severe arthritis, but they value their freedom to continue living their own lives more
than anything. The true worth of their ability to write their own stories is most evident in the fact that they are motivated to continue to write them
throughout old age.
3.A Need for Pragmatism in the Face of Death As mentioned in a Frontline interview with Gawande about Being Mortal, life's two 'unfixables' are
aging ang dying ("Dr. Atul Gawande On Aging, Dying And "Being Mortal"). Despite this well
–known fact, most physicians and patients alike are
overwhelmed by the concept of death. Moreover, in times of medical crisis, terminally ill patients allow themselves to be given "the medical
equivalent of lottery tickets" in the hopes of making a miraculous recovery (Gawande 171). The allowance of end–of–life decisions to be controlled by
the concepts of medicine or technology is a dangerous path which shows a lack in pragmatism regarding death (Sinclair). Although the overall
avoidance of the

Clarissa Fairchild A mandala is a circular visual meditation tool that is primarily used in Hindu and Buddhist culture. The word "mandala" comes
from the Sanskrit and means "circle." The center of a mandala is always connected to its circumference and its circumference is tied to the center. This

I chose a mule as the symbol, because stereotypically they are stubborn, and have been called that for centuries, for their denial to do something, that
they don't want to do. Although Clary is, selfless, loving, and artistic, she also has an unfavorable trait, stubbornness. This trait comes from the fact that
whenever she puts her mind into something (usually trying to help someone), she won't change it. An example of her being stubborn is: When she
pushed Jace off the demon (who was impersonating a boy), "Stupid little mundie," Isabelle said between her teeth "You could have gotten Jace

Analysis Of The Book ' The On Mortal Kombat ' By Kevin Wilson
In the stories that author Kevin Wilson wrote in "Tunneling to the Center of the Earth," several characters are ruled by fear. The fear that these
characters have eventually winded up having a solution or solve that helps resolve their fears. Fear is defined as: "a feeling of agitation or anxiety
caused by the presence or imminence of danger. An example of fear in one of the stories is Leonard in "Blowing up on the Spot," because he fears
death and it controls and restricts his life. Towards the end of that story, Leonard finds his resolve of having that fear. The type of things that can lead
to resolutions of fear is epiphanies. In his short story, Mortal Kombat to boys was facing a fear like no other. In his short story called "Mortal Kombat"
the boys Scotty and Wynn are best friends and they both have this fear of accepting they are falling for one another. In Kevin Wilsons short story,
"Mortal Kombat" the narrator says, "It is simple and awkward at the same time, the way they proceed. There is only the quickness of movement, the
instinctive responses of the body. It feels like fighting; that is what runs through both of their minds. It lasts all of two minutes, maybe less." (76). The
kiss made them realize they are maybe attracted to eachother and their feelings couldn't fight what they were feeling anymore. This fear that each of
them show towards the situation puts a restriction on their life for awhile. The thoughts that are going thru scotty head while he is raking

The Mortals Influence On Society
Once upon a time, many, many years ago, the society, Fallen was born. It was a land of peace, and equality....for a while that is. Fallen first existed

and believed that social inequality is what drove a society. Many speculated that he was a victim of mental illness, although no one could pinpoint
what it was. After being fed up with Arodon's practices, the rebels formed together, calling themselves, The Fallen, with the title symbolizing the fall

Argumentative Essay On Video Games
Argumentative Essay About Video Games "Teenagers today often spend a great deal of time playing video games. These games are fun and
engaging and young people often feel like playing games is a great thing to do in their spare time. However, you shouldn't spend too much time
gaming and there are a number of reasons for this: it's unhealthy, you should spend more time studying, and you need to socialize more." This
paragraph is from a persuasive essay about video games written by The Scholar Advisor, they're saying that teenagers shouldn't spend a lot of time
on video games because it's unhealthy, we need to socialize more, and that we should spend more time studying. Well some are true but some do
not cause if you're eating every day then you're healthy and on video games, you're socializing with other players around the world, also there are

reason to cut down on gaming time has to be that youths that spend a long time on computers and games consoles are often not getting enough

that people who are overweight during childhood and adolescence are far more likely to become overweight adults than those of a healthy weight

The Vampire Lestat and the Problem of Eternal Damnation Essay
The problem or question of what it means to be damned is difficult to understand at the best of times, it is however all the more difficult when the
subject in question is a vampire. How does a vampire that has developed God–like powers and whose only way to survive is to take human life,
redeem themselves in the eyes of God? This is not really an issue for Lestat; as for the majority of the Vampire Chronicleshe believes himself to be a
form of God. With every life that Lestat takes he is committing a mortal sin, the gravest form of sin and he does so with full knowledge and consent.

By their very nature, a mortal sin cuts our relationship off from God and turns man away from his creator. (Saintaquinas.com: 1)
If mortal sin is a grave matter, what does the bible constitute as being a grave matter? One idea to look upon is breaking any one of the Ten
Commandments, although some are not considered as grave as others. St. Paul offers us a list of such offences, which if committed will not allow the
sinner to enter the Kingdom of God:
The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage,
selfish ambition, dissentions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies and the like. I warn you as I did before, that those who live like this will not
inherit the kingdom of God. (Galatians, 1995, 5:19–20: 824)
It would be fair to assume that almost everyone is guilty of at least one of the above sins at some point in life; however, a being such as Lestat is
on a different level of sin. Of course in between these levels of sin there are sins, which are considered to be of a graver nature, it is obviously a
graver sin to murder than to be a drunk. From this it would be simpler to know that the latter would be considered a venial sin and not within the
same gravity of a mortal sin and therefore the sinner can be saved. However bad a mortal sin is, according to the

Examples Of Mortals In Greek Mythology
Throughout Greek mythology almost every myth includes situations with mortals and the gods interacting. Often times the gods and goddesses of
Olympus were forced to put mortals in their place, or in a way, make apparent that they are immortal while man is mortal. In these tales hubris often
played a part, as some mortals displayed excessive pride often used in defiance of the gods. In most of those situations the consequences were swift
and relentless; as opposed to killing transgressors, the gods preferred to make their criminals immortal, often setting them at impossible tasks or
painful experiences for the rest of eternity. In an article written by Michael Van Duisen, he writes, "Many mortals tried to trick or challenge the gods,

Used still today as examples in philosophy and even psychology, the myth of Sisyphus represents the mindset of mortals and reactions to impossible
tasks. He acted as a highwayman and as such had privy to godly secrets. He occasionally passed along these secrets, often about the underworld and
often for a price. He used what he had learned to capture and confine Death himself, putting him in chains. With Death thus captured, no one in the
mortal word could die and the underworld grew quiet and empty, which Hades lamented. Hades, god of the underworld, spoke with Ares, the god of
war, who was also furious about the situation. Ares proceeded to the underworld and freed Death, also wounding Sisyphus. Before he passed
however, he planned a way to once again escape his fate. Sisyphus ordered his wife to leave him unburied, and also, once he was in the underworld,
requested Hades permission to go back to the world of the living and reprimand his wife. Hades granted his request, but instead of doing as he said he
would, Sisyphus remained on Earth, living many more years and taking part in great pleasures; that is until the gods grew tired of his games and
enacted his punishment. He was ripped back to the underworld, and although after he was received there is not much mention of him, we know that his
punishment for all eternity is to push a giant boulder uphill relentlessly, until he nears the top, at which time the boulder rolls back downhill,

  • 1. Mortal Kombat Mortal Kombat "According to Time magazine, September 27, 1993, violence in video games is on the rise especially with the release of Mortal Kombat. Over 50 million children all over the United States brought this violence into their homes. The parents and other adults of these children finally decided that the video games in the U.S. had gone too far." Mortal Kombat was the first game that brought blood and gore into the video game world. Mortal Kombat started in the arcades it was such a hit, they made it into a game you could buy for personal use. Critics raved over it when it was first introduced, saying it was too violent for kids and it needed to be taken off the shelves. This game appealed to many people because of its... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mortal Kombat was one of the first of many video games that got controversy for being too violent. This game also led the way for countless other violent video games. I feel as if no one would have made a big deal out of the violence there would not be problems that there are today. As they put stricter ratings on the games it only made people want it more. This game was so popular that there was a movie made after it and all the characters seemed to come to life on the big screen. As the critics put the whole concept of violent video games down, all it did was feed a fire to burn and made Mortal Kombat became larger than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Mortal Women In The Odyssey The Odyssey a classic mythological poem composed by Homer. The Odyssey constructs a view of men, women, the divine, and the mortal. The men portrayed in the Odyssey tend to be dominant, heroic, and powerful. However, the women are given mixed character roles for example some are portrayed as submissive and meek where as others are divine and determined. Through the Odyssey we are exposed to many different views of women of both the divine and of the mortal. Yet, although we have the divine women and the mortal we are still projected with the idea of the men being in charge, and two hierarchy's one within the divine and the other within the mortal. Athena is a divine goddess who is always disguised as a man. Penelope is the loyal wife of Odysseus. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These women are the cleaners for Penelope. Throughout the Odyssey they are not mentioned much; however, once Odysseus returns home then the maids are a key character in the Odyssey. In book 22: Slaughter in the Hall the maids are put to death by being hung due to the fact that they were 'sluts' and they lay with the suitors, thus they were not loyal. Since the maids were disloyal to the household and Odysseus sentenced them to death. The maids were given a vulnerable, unimpressive and shameful death. "They would be hung like doves or larks in springГ©s triggered in a thicket, where the birds think to rest– a cruel nesting, So now in turn each women thrust her head into a noose and swung, yanked high in the air, to perish there most piteously. Their feet danced for a little, but not long."(Book XXII page 424 line 520) Through this quote we find a helpless, unherioc, and embarrassing death. The maids to do not have a choice of life or death like the suitors do. As upsetting as this quote is, it still gives a touch of femininity by using the claim "dancing around". Homer did not have to state dancing around he could have stating that they swayed from side to side, but rather he states that they danced. Through this word choice we relate it dancing to women, but also to a non–dominant and vulnerable ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The main protagonist is Liu Kang, a Shaolin Monk of the White Lotus society who wants to bring honor back to the Mortal Kombat tournament. The main storyline was expanded through comics and sequels, involving the evil forces of Outworld, who use the tournament in order to take over Earth (known as Earthrealm) ("Mortal Kombat")." Introduction: "Roughly 68 percent of all American households play computer or video games. Of this, 25 percent are under the age of 18. While the average age of a typical video game player is 35, it does show a large number of individuals are playing video games before college and while they are still at home, living with their parents and attending grade school." Media misrepresents video games as a violent distraction for its audiences. Stereotypes of games like Grand Theft Auto or Mortal Kombat have dramatically changed the video game world. When playing violent video games most players can distinguish the difference between the game and reality, but for others their game and realities are the same. According to Tom Mcgrath, violent shooting games might not be just a game to some people. Playing a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When you are doing something for the right cause do you see yourself in the shadow of someone who has taken a similar route? The song "Mortal Man" written by Kendrick Lamar discusses loyalty, interpersonal relationships, and discrimination to people of color throughout the song. This song is one of many that has had the opportunity to have been archived into the Harvard Library along with the completed album "To Pimp A Butterfly". • 5. The Theme Of Money In My Mortal Enemy By Willa Cather There are many themes and symbols shown throughout "My Mortal Enemy" by Willa Cather, from love to marriages, and choices. The motif I want to analyze is the motif of money. Money is used throughout the whole book, it used to help persuade decisions, it characterizes their lavish lifestyle, and it is what caused Oswald to become Myra's mortal enemy. Myra, being an orphan child was raised by her great–uncle, John Driscoll, who grew up a poor boy and made his fortune employing contract labor in the Mississippi swamps (10). The novel describes their lavish lifestyle in which they lived in a grand house on a ten–acre park and was the finest property in Parthia. Mr. Driscoll had fast horses that made national record, and Myra would throw balls and garden–parties, where she would have the band play their music (10). Myra's aunt said that Myra had "everything: dresses and jewels, a fine riding horse, a Steinway piano", and how her uncle took her to Ireland and had her painted by one of the famous painters there (10–11). At a youthful age, Myra did not care about money, though she cared about love. She fell in love with a gentleman named Oswald Henshawe, but Mr. Driscoll had an old grudge of some sort with Oswald father, and Driscoll did not like the idea Myra and Oswald being together. Oswald had left Parthia and went to college at Harvard; he then moved to New York and after two years he was in the position to get married (12). Then he wrote to John Driscoll for Myra's hand in ... • 6. The Ghost Of The Late King Hamlet Although some may think the ghost of the late King Hamlet in William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet is a demon, but the truth is that Hamlet's father didn 't reveal himself to anyone besides Hamlet because he knew his son would avenge his death allowing him to receive divine in Heaven. Throughout the Elizabethan Era no one in that time period knew how much of an influence they would have on all of the world. In Caffery's words, "[The] Elizabethan Era was a period of time from 1558 to 1603 known as the golden age in English history. Queen Elizabeth I reigned over England while all around the arts flourished in the society" (Caffrey). William Shakespeare was one of the most iconic writers in this era, for his use of all the genres like history, tragedy, and comedy in his plays and sonnets. During this time people became more comfortable with this unknown that most plays and sonnets included like purgatory, but they were still not comfortable with talking about ghosts walking on the earth. Even though each religious leader in the Elizabethan Era set how their people should have thought about Purgatory, they all had the same definition of what it was. Purgatory is defined as, "'the prison in which ghosts were normally incarcerated, though they might be allowed to escape now and then to briefly haunt those of the living whose zeal in their behalf was insufficient" (Low). • 7. Mortal Women In The Aeneid Through Vergil's characterization of mortal women in the Aeneid, he strengthens his narrative and deepens its poetic effect by displaying them repeatedly as expenses necessary for the founding of Rome. The first woman sacrificed to the greater cause of Rome is Aeneas's wife, Creusa, who was left behind in the burning of Troy and died. The second woman abandoned was Dido, who Aeneas had to leave behind heartbroken so he could fulfill his fate. The third women lost for Rome was Camilla, the warrior–maiden who was killed by a Trojan because she was the Trojan's enemy in battle for Italy. These three mortal women were the expenses to found Rome, emphasized by Vergil by characterizing all them as obstacles of Aeneas's fate and giving them the similar outcome of death. ... • 8. Mortal Kombat Argument The first game to come to a lot of peoples minds when prompted with "violent video games" is Mortal Kombat. Mortal Kombat is known for being extremely violent and gruesome with their death and fighting scenes. Spines being torn out, blood spraying out of bodies, organs being ripped out, its no wonder it got so much attention even with its first game. In fact, Mortal Kombat is the reason that the Entertainment Software Rating board, or the ESRB ratings, exists at all. Since then it's been a constant thought in peoples minds that the things we see and play in video games can lead to violent natures outside in the real world. There are two sides to the argument and both seem to have credibility. I'm of the opinion that violent video games don't ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Everyone Is Mortal Everyone will one day face mortality. This was also true for Prince Prospero in the short story by Edgar Allen Poe, "The Masque of the Red Death". In it is a version of the black plague, which is called the "Red Death". Prince Prospero secludes a thousand friends and himself from the death around them, but finds that he cannot avoid the inevitable. The author uses many literary devices to develop the theme of unavoidable death. One of the devices used is imagery, which evokes the events of the story clearly in the reader's mind. Another is allegory, which is used by Poe to create another story within his, as it is filled with double meanings. Lastly, Poe utilizes symbolism to give the story meaning. Edgar Allan Poe uses imagery, allegory, and symbolism to add dimension to his story and to express the theme that one cannot escape death, no matter how hard one tries. Poe uses imagery to paint a picture in readers' mind, create a mood, and emphasize the significance of certain objects. One can envision the amazement of the chambers, which had "...a tall and narrow Gothic window...of stained glass whose color varied in accordance with the...hue...of the chamber into which it opened" and was lit up by "...a brazier of fire that projected its rays through the tinted glass" (421). One can also imagine the way the crowd slows down to a pause when the "...chiming of the clock... [causes] disconcert and tremulousness and meditations" (423). • 10. St. Augustine 's Confessions Essay When a Catholic thinks of sin, the following questions come to his or her mind: Are my actions morally right? Am I disobeying God? Defying God's rule is a sin, and seeking forgiveness is pivotal, mainly because it shows that one is aware that he or she has committed a sin, and therefore, he or she must seek redemption. For example, consider the following seven deadly sins: pride, envy, gluttony, lust, anger, greed, and sloth ("The Seven Deadly Sins," 1). In Saint Augustine's Confessions, readers get the chance to learn about sin through Saint Augustine's experiences of sin confrontations and temptations. For instance, in Confessions, the pear tree is depicted as a sin, a symbol of pleasure–Saint Augustine's original sin. How so? Well, stealing the pears with his friends is Saint Augustine's first memory of sinning. Saint Augustine sees a parallel connection between the pear tree and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil–the original sin. In this paper, the idea of sin in Saint Augustine's story of the pear will be applied to Chaucer's "Pardoner's Prologue and Tale." Thus, allowing readers to realize that the Pardoner embodies sin as Augustine defines it. In Chaucer's " The Pardoner's Prologue and Tale," the Pardoner is a medieval preacher whose ultimate goal is to earn money by soliciting offerings and granting pardons. The prologue begins with the Pardoner describing everything that Chaucer believes to be corrupt with the church of his day. The Pardoner describes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Rape And The Mortal Rapists In ancient Greco–Roman mythic narrative rape is depicted as a normalised and often essential paradigm that is used to show the gods' dominance over lesser beings. Numerous accounts represent the gods as having transcended the boundaries of justice and morality by highlighting their exemption from prosecution for rape in contrast to mortal rapists, who cannot avoid punishment. Furthermore, aetiological–rape myths reveal that only the gods could bring about creation through rape, whether it be the birth of divine offspring, the dawn of natural phenomena or the founding of new institutions. Much of the Daphne and Apollo story carries a sense of excitement and titillation as Ovid replaces sexually explicit rape with descriptions of Daphne's beauty and her running away: "She was graceful to see, as the wind bared her limbs and its gusts stirred her garments ... he gave the fleeing maiden no respite, but followed close on her heels, and his breath touched the locks that lay scattered on her neck." (Ovid, Metamorphoses 1.526–7, 541–3) Apollo could have seized and raped her immediately but instead attempts to woe her with words in a courtly manner. Lawrence evaluates Hester Prynne's flaws by using succinct diction, sarcasm, and biblical allusions. By utilizing succinct diction, D.H. Lawrence ridicules Hester in order to expose the severity her sin. Lawrence simultaneously attacks Hester Prynne's character in a figurative manner as he refers to her as "[an] Adulteress. Alpha. It is through the words that dignify the absolute worst of sinning in which Lawrence's negative outlook on Hester is revealed. Succinct diction that symbolize and refer to sin uncover Hester's withdrawal from attaining the moral perfection that Puritans desire. • 23. Punishment That Befits The Sin Essay Myles P. Toe Professor Cynthia Gaw World literature 11 November 2016 Punishment that Befits the Sin Dante's Inferno originally named The Divine Comedy or in modern Italian The Commedia , follows the contemporary Christian ethos by showing how the consequences of man are equal to their sins; passed upon them in death. The physical sins that man does on earth if not repented of, will then become their eternal consequence in Hell. Dante shows us in his travels through the circles of hell how this suffering is the direct and equal result of their earthly sins. The sins of the cowardice, the lustful, gluttonous, greedy, angry, heretical, violent, fraudulent and treacherous have their bodies in constant pain equivalent of the actions of their human bodies on earth. The thesis of this paper is to show how physical pain enacted upon corporeal bodies in hell, are the logical consequence of sin on earth. I will show this by citing examples of sinners featured in The inferno that are tortured for the sins in their respective layer of hell. The Inferno is based directly upon Dante's devout catholic nature. The inferno is mixed with the bible, roman Catholicism, mythology and medieval tradition with a direct influence of 14th century roman Catholicism. The passage concerning purgatory is a direct indoctrination from roman Catholicism and is not found anywhere in the bible. The nature of sin is brought up many times in the play Doctor Faustus. It seems that Faustus (like all of us) is damned. The question posed is; can we as humans do anything to save ourselves from eternal damnation, or are we doomed from birth. The play deals with Faustus struggle to understand sin and its effect on the human soul. There is a interesting scene where the seven deadly sins appear before Faustus. He replied: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law of Moses and the teachings of the prophets depend on these two commandments." (Matthew 22:37–40). Since the entire law of God is according to the words of Jesus, this scripture is merely a commentary on the wonderful principles of love. If this is so, then sin should be defined in terms of a lack of love, rather than as a formal law. According to this point of view a sin is any failure to love God and our fellow man with a perfect heart, which then a lack of love would lead to certain attitudes and deeds which are displeasing to God. Keeping this in mind we can proceed to see how sins are classified. There are two categories of sin, mortal sin and venial sin. We commit mortal sins when we break a commandment of God in a serious manner, for example, idolatry, adultery, murder, slander. These are all things that are contrary to the love that we owe God. Jesus taught that even looking at a woman lustfully is a sin. One reason being that she believes it is important for novels to have all different kinds of characters to reflect the world around us; because the world is diverse, the book she writes must also be diverse. She strives to create relatable characters so that readers of any sexual orientation, race, or gender are able to identify with her works. For example, Clare's choice of writing her main character as a young female was made because she would have wanted to read that as a teenager. Every character is created in order to give people, especially those who are not as represented in the media, someone to look up to or relate to. Cassandra Clare creates an important series for teenagers to read as they begin to discover who they are; the inclusion of racially diverse, LGBTQ+, and mentally disabled characters in Clare's The Mortal Instruments and The Dark Artifices gives young readers a variety of different characters so that any reader can see themselves in the novels. First and foremost, I would like to emphasize how important it is to have representation in young adult novels. A large part of the reason that teenagers read books is to read about someone that they can relate to. Being able to read about a character who has a lot in common with the reader helps the reader to not only feel connected to the book and its characters, but also to feel as if someone is ... • 33. Theme Of Being Mortal Being Mortal and its Consequences 1.Introduction In Being Mortal, Atul Gawande uses his experiences as a surgeon, professor and public health professional to discuss many facets of Western end–of–life care and the process of growing old in a modern age. Overall, I have found that three overpowering themes in this novel are security versus autonomy, a need for pragmatism surrounding the concept of death, and our medicalized society's devaluation of hospice and palliative care. Regarding these themes, I have chosen to reflect on my grandparents, death in the West and social role valorization, respectively. 2.Security Versus Autonomy An especially relevant theme to Gawande's Being Mortal is the spectrum of security versus autonomy.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Personally, the importance of one's freedom in life is drawn upon by the lives of my grandparents. Although my maternal grandmother and grandfather are 75 and 77 years of age, respectively, they continue to live fulfilling and productive lives. It is not to be said that they have not suffered from problems related to aging, such as my grandfather suffering from severe arthritis, but they value their freedom to continue living their own lives more than anything. The true worth of their ability to write their own stories is most evident in the fact that they are motivated to continue to write them throughout old age. 3.A Need for Pragmatism in the Face of Death As mentioned in a Frontline interview with Gawande about Being Mortal, life's two 'unfixables' are aging ang dying ("Dr. Atul Gawande On Aging, Dying And "Being Mortal"). Despite this well –known fact, most physicians and patients alike are overwhelmed by the concept of death. Moreover, in times of medical crisis, terminally ill patients allow themselves to be given "the medical equivalent of lottery tickets" in the hopes of making a miraculous recovery (Gawande 171). The allowance of end–of–life decisions to be controlled by the concepts of medicine or technology is a dangerous path which shows a lack in pragmatism regarding death (Sinclair). Although the overall avoidance of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Symbols In The Mortal Instruments Clarissa Fairchild A mandala is a circular visual meditation tool that is primarily used in Hindu and Buddhist culture. The word "mandala" comes from the Sanskrit and means "circle." The center of a mandala is always connected to its circumference and its circumference is tied to the center. This character analysis is about the protagonist of the very well–known dramatic/fantasy novel, The Mortal instruments: City of Bones, written by Cassandra Clare, and the character is Clarissa Fairchild, or Clary for short. The novel is set in present day New York, and follows a 16 year old girl, whose life turns into a mess when she sees 'someone' getting killed, her mother gets kidnapped, and she is told that "all the stories are true", meaning all the myths about demons, warlocks, vampires, werewolves, etc. Clary, a dynamic character, who is selfless, loving, artistic, stubborn, and determined, goes through an adventure that she will never forget. I chose a mule as the symbol, because stereotypically they are stubborn, and have been called that for centuries, for their denial to do something, that they don't want to do. Although Clary is, selfless, loving, and artistic, she also has an unfavorable trait, stubbornness. This trait comes from the fact that whenever she puts her mind into something (usually trying to help someone), she won't change it. An example of her being stubborn is: When she pushed Jace off the demon (who was impersonating a boy), "Stupid little mundie," Isabelle said between her teeth "You could have gotten Jace killed" (pg 14), she was so focused on saving the 'boy' (who is actually a demon) she didn't realize what she was actually doing. Stubbornness is Clary's biggest flaw, she gets so focused on something, that she is oblivious of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Analysis Of The Book ' The On Mortal Kombat ' By Kevin Wilson In the stories that author Kevin Wilson wrote in "Tunneling to the Center of the Earth," several characters are ruled by fear. The fear that these characters have eventually winded up having a solution or solve that helps resolve their fears. Fear is defined as: "a feeling of agitation or anxiety caused by the presence or imminence of danger. An example of fear in one of the stories is Leonard in "Blowing up on the Spot," because he fears death and it controls and restricts his life. Towards the end of that story, Leonard finds his resolve of having that fear. The type of things that can lead to resolutions of fear is epiphanies. In his short story, Mortal Kombat to boys was facing a fear like no other. In his short story called "Mortal Kombat" the boys Scotty and Wynn are best friends and they both have this fear of accepting they are falling for one another. In Kevin Wilsons short story, "Mortal Kombat" the narrator says, "It is simple and awkward at the same time, the way they proceed. There is only the quickness of movement, the instinctive responses of the body. It feels like fighting; that is what runs through both of their minds. It lasts all of two minutes, maybe less." (76). The kiss made them realize they are maybe attracted to eachother and their feelings couldn't fight what they were feeling anymore. This fear that each of them show towards the situation puts a restriction on their life for awhile. The thoughts that are going thru scotty head while he is raking ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This dry cleaners was impeccable in its reputation for the beauty it possessed ,the secrets it held. I worked here in a dazed sort of way. I was a dunpeal,so I was only half way in on the secret of vampirism and it made my heart bleed so to say. I would see the poor humans walk in here with the clothes and leave ,only to be tracked and killed by the vampiric caress of death, their scents heavy with fear.It was all sort of nonchalant how this system worked. The patrons would walk and the clothes would end up being sold into cash for the coven. • 37. The Mortals Influence On Society Once upon a time, many, many years ago, the society, Fallen was born. It was a land of peace, and equality....for a while that is. Fallen first existed back in 2126 – the Future Renaissance–, after the people, led by Orillia Norback had overthrown the communist government of The Mortals, and their corrupt leader, Samil Aredon. Aredon was a cruel and sadist man, he believed in discrimination, genocide, and torture. He was a racist and a sexist, and believed that social inequality is what drove a society. Many speculated that he was a victim of mental illness, although no one could pinpoint what it was. After being fed up with Arodon's practices, the rebels formed together, calling themselves, The Fallen, with the title symbolizing the fall of Aredon will soon come. The rebels gained more power, year after year, going from one town, to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fallen became a society where all races, cultures and genders were embraced. However, just like many other societies, Fallen experienced their share of conflict, mainly with their biggest rival: The British Isles. The British Isles had always planned to invade The Mortals, but stepped back because of the civil war between the people, and the communist government. Now, with a new government, a combination of monarchy, and democracy, Fallen, became a force to be reckoned with. Conflict within the society arose after an attempted invasion from the British Isles in 2180. Many, mainly the people of colour were wounded severely, angering the coloured community. Many speculated that this was the British's attempt to tear apart the society from the inside, and it worked. Fallen soon became a place where division struck, where a line between Black and White arose. Territorial disputes, interstates, and terrorism came after, leaving the society, vulnerable. Vulnerability, gave the British Isles an advantage, where in 2230, Fallen was taken over by the British Isles. The society of Fallen, had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Argumentative Essay On Video Games Argumentative Essay About Video Games "Teenagers today often spend a great deal of time playing video games. These games are fun and engaging and young people often feel like playing games is a great thing to do in their spare time. However, you shouldn't spend too much time gaming and there are a number of reasons for this: it's unhealthy, you should spend more time studying, and you need to socialize more." This paragraph is from a persuasive essay about video games written by The Scholar Advisor, they're saying that teenagers shouldn't spend a lot of time on video games because it's unhealthy, we need to socialize more, and that we should spend more time studying. Well some are true but some do not cause if you're eating every day then you're healthy and on video games, you're socializing with other players around the world, also there are school studying games too or they don't have to study because there are smart people playing video games. The second paragraph says "The primary reason to cut down on gaming time has to be that youths that spend a long time on computers and games consoles are often not getting enough exercise. With high obesity rates, it's very important for young people to spend as much time being active as possible, especially since studies show that people who are overweight during childhood and adolescence are far more likely to become overweight adults than those of a healthy weight when they're young. • 39. The Vampire Lestat and the Problem of Eternal Damnation Essay The problem or question of what it means to be damned is difficult to understand at the best of times, it is however all the more difficult when the subject in question is a vampire. How does a vampire that has developed God–like powers and whose only way to survive is to take human life, redeem themselves in the eyes of God? This is not really an issue for Lestat; as for the majority of the Vampire Chronicleshe believes himself to be a form of God. With every life that Lestat takes he is committing a mortal sin, the gravest form of sin and he does so with full knowledge and consent. With reference to Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles and both Interview with the Vampire and Queen of the Damned motion pictures, Lestat's journey from mortal to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By their very nature, a mortal sin cuts our relationship off from God and turns man away from his creator. (Saintaquinas.com: 1) If mortal sin is a grave matter, what does the bible constitute as being a grave matter? One idea to look upon is breaking any one of the Ten Commandments, although some are not considered as grave as others. St. Paul offers us a list of such offences, which if committed will not allow the sinner to enter the Kingdom of God: The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissentions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies and the like. I warn you as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. (Galatians, 1995, 5:19–20: 824) It would be fair to assume that almost everyone is guilty of at least one of the above sins at some point in life; however, a being such as Lestat is on a different level of sin. Of course in between these levels of sin there are sins, which are considered to be of a graver nature, it is obviously a graver sin to murder than to be a drunk. From this it would be simpler to know that the latter would be considered a venial sin and not within the same gravity of a mortal sin and therefore the sinner can be saved. However bad a mortal sin is, according to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Examples Of Mortals In Greek Mythology Throughout Greek mythology almost every myth includes situations with mortals and the gods interacting. Often times the gods and goddesses of Olympus were forced to put mortals in their place, or in a way, make apparent that they are immortal while man is mortal. In these tales hubris often played a part, as some mortals displayed excessive pride often used in defiance of the gods. In most of those situations the consequences were swift and relentless; as opposed to killing transgressors, the gods preferred to make their criminals immortal, often setting them at impossible tasks or painful experiences for the rest of eternity. In an article written by Michael Van Duisen, he writes, "Many mortals tried to trick or challenge the gods, and all... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Used still today as examples in philosophy and even psychology, the myth of Sisyphus represents the mindset of mortals and reactions to impossible tasks. He acted as a highwayman and as such had privy to godly secrets. He occasionally passed along these secrets, often about the underworld and often for a price. He used what he had learned to capture and confine Death himself, putting him in chains. With Death thus captured, no one in the mortal word could die and the underworld grew quiet and empty, which Hades lamented. Hades, god of the underworld, spoke with Ares, the god of war, who was also furious about the situation. Ares proceeded to the underworld and freed Death, also wounding Sisyphus. Before he passed however, he planned a way to once again escape his fate. Sisyphus ordered his wife to leave him unburied, and also, once he was in the underworld, requested Hades permission to go back to the world of the living and reprimand his wife. Hades granted his request, but instead of doing as he said he would, Sisyphus remained on Earth, living many more years and taking part in great pleasures; that is until the gods grew tired of his games and enacted his punishment. He was ripped back to the underworld, and although after he was received there is not much mention of him, we know that his punishment for all eternity is to push a giant boulder uphill relentlessly, until he nears the top, at which time the boulder rolls back downhill, ...
