TVI Values
These parameters are: tone value increase TVI, grey balance, solid tone optical ink density, relative
print contrast, color gamut and color difference. Shore durometer PCE DXA was used to measure
hardness all the four blankets, which came out as 82 shore A. Later to this, printing pressure between
blanket and impression cylinder was measured using a Nip Control Pressure Indicator. On each
printing unit, three different pressures between blanket cylinder and impression cylinder were applied
and three measurements were taken on different positions of each printing unit. Sheet fed offset

24 different ink sequences are possible by using four process colors Cyan , Magenta , Yellow and
Black. Out of these, 5 sequences were selected. Two sequences, YMCK and MYCK were selected
based on an informal survey. Next two, CMYK and KCMY were selected because they are industry
standards. And last KYMC was selected based on a suggestion from expert. Printing units were
interchanged and press runs were conducted in sequence YMCK, MYCK, CMYK, KCMY and
KYMC. Dora offset printing machine was used to perform press runs in a pre specified pressroom
condition maintained at 280C temperature and 45% relative humidity. Art paper was used as substrate
for the study. With the help of spectrophotometer X Rite 528, LAB values, contrast of different
samples and density values were measured. Data was analyzed by suitable statistical, quantitative
methods and tools. It was found that value of LAB, contrast and density varied for different ink
sequence. Results were shown category wise for LAB values , density and contrast as follows: LAB
value: KCMY sequence is more suitable for Blue, Brown and Violet color. Whereas CMYK, MYCK,
YMCK, and KYMC sequence were appropriate for Orange, Green, Red and Purple color according to
delta E values. Density: It was found that maximum and minimum value for Red Green color was
obtained for sequences YMCK and MYCK at various density percentages. For Blue color, all the

The Quiet American
Fallujah s End
Sunday 20th April 2004 Afghanistan.
It has not always been like this. There was once peace in this land, though peace is now naught but a
faded memory. When I first came here, i only saw the smiles of the kids in the streets just kicking a
ball or running around. Now what I see is half broken roads with half or completely destroyed
buildings with possibly invisible bombs around the roads. Instead of travelling around this city in a
taxi, I have to travel in a goddamn Humvee. 6 years ago it was, when I first landed here in a plane,
being forced to come here to negotiate with the government of Afghanistan with that of mine, USA

It was only 7 o clock. I took a cold shower, since the time I have been here in this country; I have only
taken 2 hot showers. Sure, at first it was the worst thing to do during a day, now its normal, suited to
my lifestyle.
By the chattering and shouting I heard in the morning, seems as though Chris hadn t come back last
night. That had settled my plan for today as I planned to go search the city to find him. Even though
he was different, narrow minded and wanted different things, he was still my friend in a way, I think...
Chris s special ops team had tried to search for him all day, but still no clue as to where he would be.
As for me I had been going in around the buildings and saw one of the most horrible sights, which I
could never forget. Literally, an army of dead bodies situated in the middle of the road. If I had
remembered correctly, this had been the route I had taken to come to the air base. These bodies were
not here before. This must have happened last night. Unconsciously, I had started to suspect Chris of
being responsible for something like this.
It was close to midnight, I had searched for Chris all day. It seemed as though he s completely
disappeared. Obviously the search team would have searched this city inside out by now. Suddenly, I
had heard a loud voice, as if they had been screaming at the top of their lungs.
Hey!
I turned around to where the voice

Hurricane Katrina s Impact On New Orleans Essay
Migration, whether permanent or temporary, has always been a traditional response or survival
strategy of people confronting the prospect, impact or aftermath of disasters (Hugo 1996). However,
today, more than ever, the complex nature of disasters such as Hurricane Katrina in the city of New
Orleans, bring with them an enormous potential for the uprooting of large numbers of people. The
increasing complexity of disasters is rooted in the interplay of social and economic factors in the
environment, exacerbating the vulnerability of people and environments and intensifying their impacts
when they occur. Hurricane Katrina s impact on New Orleans was compounded by an excessive
dependence on technology and half a century s assault on the natural defenses of the environment of
southern Louisiana, leaving the city tragically vulnerable. Virtually the entire population of the city
has been displaced, a large proportion of it perhaps permanently, presenting a host of profound
economic, social and psychological challenges to individuals, communities and all levels of
government.
Despite technological and scientific advances in prediction and mitigation, we have seen a serious
increase in both mortality and economic losses from disasters since 1960, particularly in the
developing world. Disasters are, in fact, increasing in impact and scope through the combined effects
of economic, social, demographic, ideological and technological factors. Greater numbers of people

Analysis Of The Book Stepdaughters And Love Medicine...
Family
Stepdaughters and Love Medicine
Family is interpreted many different ways by many different people. In these two stories
Stepdaughters by Max Apple and Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich, we will view the family
dynamics differences and similarities. In the story Stepdaughters our author paints a very vivid image
of a broken family. Starting with the death of our character Stephanie s father when she was a very
small child, but also the fact that her mother Helen had remarried several times clues us in to their
incompletion as a whole family. Apple clearly states the newest stepdad saying, I m stepdad number
three trying to stay on the sidelines (129).A nonparticipant parent would suggest that he really is not
sure if he is going to be around to much longer. In our story Love Medicine our author also paints an
image of a broken family. Our character Lipsha comes from a dysfunctional background only to be
cared for in what may seem to others as a dysfunctional situation as well. Starting out as a youth he
was told his mother did not want him, only to be cared for by someone who never lets him forget he
was rescued by her. Grandma Kashpaw would tell him he was the biggest waste on the planet and she
saved him from his mother who wanted to drown him. Lipsha felt there was not that many thank you
left to be said (Erdrich 376). Although our two stories have images of broken homes. Stepdaughters
shows genuine love between Stephanie and her mother

Migrations In International Migration
International Migration is not new. There are many countries in poverty where people seek
opportunities far from home. Jason Pribilsky in La Chulla Vida , and Deborah Boehm in Intimate
Migrations , showed us migrants from two countries, Mexico and Ecuador. There is a story behind
every migration, and the experiences the migrants go through have some similarities and differences.
One of the major factors driving migrants is the state of the economy. Ecuadorian migrants were
coming to the United States since the 1970s, but the intention was only to work a couple of years and
return home. Starting from the 1990s, the economic situation forced widespread poverty and
thousands of people went to find work in New York (Pribilsky 2007, P.8). The Mexican migration
started as early as the 1800s, but there was a mass of migrants returning home. Mass migration from
Mexico heightened in the 1990s, especially after the Peso Crisis of 1994 (Depalma A. 1994). From the
moment the migrants decide to cross the border, they are put into danger. Many migrants encounter
problems in reaching the border and return home, some migrants die, especially while traveling as
cargo in the sea from Ecuador. Most migrants from Mexico who successfully crossed owned debt to
cayotes (Boehm 2012, 91). The migrants from Ecuador deal with the debt from chulqueros (loan
sharks) back home (Pribilsky 2007, 163). Once the migrants make it to the U.S., it still does not
guarantee them to find a job right away,

Four Characteristics Essay Comparison Of Four Ecosystems
Comparison of Four Ecosystem Essay Assignment An ecosystem is the relationship between the biotic
and abiotic components. Biotic components are composed of all living things in contrast, abiotic
components are composed of the non living parts of an environment. (Ms. Blackshaw) This essay is
focused on the abiotic factors that influence an ecosystem. They are many abiotic factors affecting an
ecosystem such as temperature, water, wind, sunlight, rocks, soil, and oxygen. However, the three
abiotic factors that affect a parking lot, field, meadow, and forest the greatest are wind, rock and water.
Wind is defined as the movement of the air. Even though, Wind is an abiotic factor it is still vital for
various ecosystems. In parking lots, wind is non prominent due to the lack of trees compared to the
forest, where it is chilly and windy. Some biotic factors that were recorded in the parking lot were,
grass, tress, and dandelions. Dandelions are important for bees and other organisms that consume
nectar. Without wind, the dandelion blossoms would not be able to blow away creating more
dandelions for bees and other insects to consume. This gives the organisms less nectar and it may
cause death because the lack of resources for them to consume in that area. Fields produce more wind
currents compared to parking lots because its an open space, with more trees. Since there are not a lot
of interferences with the fields, wind picks up grass pollens and spreads it throughout the fields
making the fields richer and healthier. This allows the primary consumers to eat the grass and be
healthy. Causing the entire food chain to be healthy. Meadows compared to fields, have a bit more
wind due to the trees and bushes that compose the ecosystem. The winds help for cooling birds and
insects. Wind also affects plants throughout their growth. Slight winds help the plants grow sturdier,
so other consumers can benefit from it. Winds in forests are very high due to the number of trees. Due
to more wind, it helps animals such as birds to fly without much effort and the same with butterfly s.
Without wind in forests animals that fly tend to struggle a lot because it does not have wind support.
Rock or stone is a natural substance.

Ethics Of Care And Relativism
Ethical System Reflection Everyone has their own system for determining what is right and wrong
based on certain principles. This can be categorized as an ethical system, which is defined as a
structured set of principles that defines what is moral (Pollock, 2015). Ethical systems have a variety
of characteristics, which create a blue print to how individuals make critical decisions. The two ethical
systems I relate to are, ethics of care and relativism. Ethics of care is an ethical system which focuses
on preserving and enriching relationships while also meeting the needs of others (Pollock, 2015).
While relativism is an ethical system explains how what is deemed right and wrong changes based on
an individual or groups belief (Pollock, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Applying Ethics of Care An example for ethics of care within the justice system is the concept of
restorative justice. Restorative justice highlights mending the relationships between an offender and
the victim; additionally, it brings the victim and offender together throughout this process (Alberta
Government, n.d.). Restorative justice supports ethics of care, as it focuses on the interpersonal
relationships versus a punitive approach, which is a key characteristic to this system. Moreover, the
offender, victim, and family members are involved in this process, supporting that all parties needs are
considered. A personal example for ethics of care was when I was working at Park Place Mall where
there was an individual who was extremely emotionally distraught. This individual was exhibiting
behaviours, which are consistent with someone who was going to steal something, and was acting out
towards the staff members in that store. I walked up to this individual and began to talk to this person
building rapport. After some time, this individual wanted me to pay for their clothing items because
they were embarrassed by the situation. I paid for the items, and met them outside the mall, where this
individual started explaining how they wanted to commit suicide. Due to these triggers, I stayed with
the individual ensuring their safety, while also listening to their story. Once I was confident this
individual would not commit suicide, I

Summary Of Red China Blues By Mao Zedong
On April 27, 1989, hundreds of Chinese protestors took a stand against the oppressive and corrupt
government to fight for reform and democracy by occupying Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China.
The protests were preceded by a memorial for Hu Yaobang, a Communist leader unpopular amongst
Party members for his liberal ideas and lack of enthusiasm for Marxism and Maoism. Marxism is the
political theories of Karl Marx which became the basis of Communism and the inspiration for Mao
Zedong to create Maoism. Approximately 100,000 students had traveled to Tiananmen Square for Hu
Yaobang s memorial. Following the memorial, students presented a petition to meet with Premier Li
Peng which the government refused. This led to a boycott of universities but also led to more demand
for democracy. Catalyzing the protests was the unfair treatment of the Chinese people at the hands of
the Chinese Communist Party. Along with students, civil servants, scholars and laborers joined the
protests, risking their lives, jobs and reputations. By June of 1989, negotiations were in place to end
the protests, now amounting to over a million people and for democratic reform. Mao Zedong had

The One with the Three Parts of Freuds Psyche
The One with the Three Parts of Freud s Psyche
According to Sigmund Freud, every human has three parts of their personalities. One part is the id: the
part of a person that is pleasure driven. It is the part of the personality structure that runs on instinctual
desires. On the opposite end of the spectrum, there is superego. Superego is the section of one s
personality that is only concerned with others opinions and must have perfect behavior in order to
please others. Finally there is ego, the reality of one s personality. It is what one actually does to try to
please both extremes of their personality. Though everyone has parts of each within them, some
people have one part of their personality outshine the others. In the tv series Friends , directed by
Robby Benson, the three parts of the psyche are demonstrated through the three main characters
Chandler, Ross and Joey. Joey Tribbiani represents the id, he lives by the pleasure principle and is
concerned primarily with immediate gratification. Ross clearly corresponds with the ego and operates
on the reality principle. While he certainly likes the same pleasurable things as Joey, he derives his
satisfaction through more realistic long term means. Lastly, Chandler completes the set representing
the superego. He internalizes cultural norms and expectations which realizes the feeling of guilt or
shame. In the episode, The one with all the Jealousy , it shows Joey, Chandler, and Ross s freudian
characteristics very

Essay On Alimony Paper
When couples divorce, it is not uncommon for one spouse to be left unable to support him or herself.
In these cases, the Court may order the spouse with the greater income to pay alimony to the spouse in
need. Alimony, also called spousal maintenance, is a crucial financial safety net for spouses who
cannot support themselves after divorce. There are several different kinds of Florida alimony that
serve various purposes. Alimony can be temporary, bridge the gap, rehabilitative, durational, or
permanent.
Temporary alimony may be awarded while the divorce is pending, to be terminated once the divorce is
finalized. Temporary alimony helps the supported spouse meet their immediate financial needs until a
final alimony award can be ordered. Bridge the gap alimony is short term alimony used to help the
supported spouse maintain the standard of living they enjoyed during the marriage until they can
become self supporting. Bridge the gap alimony cannot exceed two years and cannot be modified.
Rehabilitative alimony may be awarded to a spouse so they can prepare to enter the workforce. ...

The Decline Of The Latin American And Caribbean Region
For the Latin American/Caribbean region, one human induced environmental problem would be the
severity of deforestation due to mining practices. According to Lisa Naughton s lecture, the price of
gold has skyrocketed due to the stock market crash, leading to a higher demand of gold and driving
roughly 7,000 miners into the forest, making this a global resource demand. Gold mining has a
significant history South America. According to page 281 of the textbook, Spain demanded that their
colonies provide gold and silver for the Spanish crown during the 1500s, with the crown itself
demanding 20% of all mining profits. Also, outsiders are no strangers to destroying South America s
natural resources for their own benefit. As stated on page 281, ... Show more content on

Fish makes up about 80 percent of protein (Where Have All The Fish Gone? Film) in the Khmer
people s diet, and the downstream impact of the Yali Dam has led to high toxicity levels in the streams
that have killed off the fish. Not only does this affect their diets, but it also affects their economy,
since fish is a main export of Southeast Asia. The Mekong River Commission estimated that $200
million of fish migrate up the Hou Sahong channel a year (Biard, Lecture). The Don Sahong dam
would block this channel, which would impact thousands of people. This problem is a result of local
resource use, since the purpose of this dam is to generate electricity specifically for Cambodia.
Southeast Asia becoming so dependent on exports, such as fish, has increased the severity of this
issue. According to page 404 in the textbook, during the 1970s and 1980s, many southeastern
countries have shifted their focus to developing products that could be exported all over the world.
Similarly to those demanding gold from Latin America, the corporations in charge of the dams care
about benefiting from its profits. According to Baird s article, the main objective of building the Don
Sahong Dam is to generate revenue by exporting electricity to Thailand or Cambodia. Those who
consider this Dam to be a problem would be the people of Cambodia and Laos who depend on the
river for food and survival.

How Did The Heian Period Differ From Medieval American...
The Heian Period began when the emperor Kammu moved the capital of Japan from Nara, and Heian

Literary Commentary In All The Pretty Horses
Literary commentary essay In the excerpt on pages 147 151 of All the pretty horses Cormac McCarthy
shows through various literary techniques such as imagery and diction. As well as his use of language
and the structure of the passage to show how the horses are such a big part of the story, how they are
not just a way of transportation for John Grady Cole and Rawlins, they are almost everything to them.
From friends to their life s passion these horses are what really drives them and neither of them would
be the same without them. Throughout this passage there are multiple effects that come from Cormac
McCarthy s choices of literary techniques and structure of the passage. They all mainly focus on the
horses and their impact with John Grady and Rawlins. Throughout the passage Cormac McCarthy
shows that the horses are a connection to the things that John Grady and Rawlins love, you never
really see them upset when they are with horses. McCarthy displays this on pg 147 when it says They
rode hard hazing the wild manadas out of the high valleys and they camped at their old site on the
south slope of the Anteojos where they camped with Luis. This is something that both Rawlins and
John Grady love doing and it is closely tied to the horses. McCarthy most likely does this to symbolize
how important the horses are to them and also how the horses are not just a mere mode of
transportation, they are their passion and what they love doing. You can tell that both have formed

Analysis Of River Out Of Eden And The Art Of War
It is difficult to argue whether strategy is an art form or science because it can actually be both. Sun
Tzu s text, The Art of War is an example of an ancient humanism text about strategies of war.
Humanism by definition is, an outlook or system of thought attaching prime importance to human
rather than divine or supernatural matters. Humanist beliefs stress the potential value and goodness of
human beings, emphasize common human needs, and seek solely rational ways of solving human
problems (Dictionary.com). Therefore, humanism is much like philosophy which is related to science
yet influenced by the skill of art. Thomas Cleary starts off the text with a quote from The Book of
Balance and Harmony which states, To know after seeing is not worthy of being called knowing (qtd.
in Cleary, xv xvi), but since Sun Tzu s teachings are philosophical the text renders itself as war

The Importance Of Computer Literacy
By definition, computer literacy is basic, nontechnical knowledge about computers and how to use
them; familiarity and experience with computers, software, and computer systems. ( Computer literacy
| Define Computer literacy at Dictionary.com, n.d.) Computer literacy is when an individual is familiar
enough with a computer to be able to use it without help or needing extensive knowledge. Someone
who is computer literate is able to use a computer, navigate folders and sub folders, run programs,
install and uninstall computer software, and general knowledge of how it operates.
Computer algorithms and its significance
Computer algorithms are significant in that without them, a computer would not function. A computer
algorithm is a set of instructions which tells the computer how to do something, and in return, we are
given an output of some sort. A computer algorithm can be defined as a procedure for solving a
mathematical problem (as of finding the greatest common divisor) in a finite number of steps that
frequently involves repetition of an operation; broadly . ( Algorithm | Definition of Algorithm by
Merriam Webster, n.d.) Essentially, an algorithm is a set of instructions which are laid out step by step,
in order for the computer to process the information and preform a task.

Huckleberry Finn Symbolism Essay
In Huckleberry Finn, a young boy and a runaway slave look to escape from sivilized land. This
adventure highlights the contrast between Huck s experiences on the Mississippi River, a symbol for
freedom, and his experiences in the South, a symbol for deceit. Twain uses this symbolism to convey
the theme of civilization and natural life. The land symbolizes how skewed and messed up the South s
morality is. Huck s first encounter with this is when the Widow [takes him] for her son, and [allows]
she would sivilize [him]; but it [is] rough living in the house all the time (Twain 2). Huck does not
enjoy the idea of having to be molded into a prim and proper young man. Huck wants to live free and
on his own without having to adhere to a strict lifestyle. This is not quite the case with Huck on the
big river, and nobody to bother [them] (Twain 29). Huck finds a sense of comfort in getting away from
the land in which he once lived as he is now free to become his own person. Huck relishs life on the

Moral Absolutism And Moral Relativism
Moral Relativism is classified under any positions concerning the differences in moral judgments
between people and the culture. Moral relativism is the position that ethical or moral propositions
make claims regarding cultural or personal circumstances. Moral Relativism affirms relative form of
validation of moral statements but doesn t deny them. Moral relativist typically view the ethical
standards of right or wrong are culturally based and are issued to a person s individual decision.
Instead of making their decision on what is right, decisions are based on self interest. This procedure
has a negative impact on behavior and will affected the way we treat others. Moral absolutism is a
moral view that certain actions are inherently right or wrong. Moral absolution, in more depth, is a
belief that there are established standards against moral questions that can be judged and certain
actions are considered right or wrong. Absolutism represents that ethics and morals come from within
the laws of the universe, the nature of humanity, the will of God. Moral absolutists base their decision

Language, By Nature External And Community Driven
In his Philosophical Investigations Wittgenstein states that language is by nature external and
community driven, therefore the notion of a private language is impossible. Wittgenstein argues that in
a private language, the words of this language are to refer to what the speaker can know to his
immediate private sensations. So another person cannot understand the language (PI 243).
Wittgenstein contends that among other reasons private language is flawed in that there is no way that
the speech community can verify to see if the language is being used correctly. Wittgenstein s
argument that you cannot have an internal language is flawed because it overlooks the crucial internal
functions of the brain that facilitate language, both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
No matter how you try to render the contents of your internal nature, there is no way to verify if
another person could understand you fully. Since you cannot confirm even things that are seemingly
universal, like the perception of a color it is futile that a completely personal language and the
sensations associated with it would be fully perceptible to another person. The notion of private
language is flawed because there is no way to really tell if what you are attempting to communicate is
being perceived correctly by the other party. Since it is impossible to be witness to another person s
thought process the conception of a private language is unsound. A fundamental truth about language
is the fact that in order to communicate effectively, all parties involved must be able to understand the
language that is being spoken. An integral part of understanding language and having a successful
conversation is an underlying agreement as to the definitions of the words being used. Wittgenstein
also claims that there is a fundamental agreement in judgements that is required for communication by
means of language (PI 242). The agreements in judgements that Wittgenstein mentions is simply the
subject matter at hand, a way to determine if both speaker and listener are on the same page . The
word judgement is a very loaded word and it obscures

Analysis Of The Poem The Oysters By Tobias Wolff
There are two short stories with different settings. Oysters, written by Anton Chekhov, takes a place in
the nineteenth century Moscow. It begins with a flashback, which the author recalls on the day that he
and his father try to beg for alms in order to satisfy their hunger, which happens when he is a child.
While his father hesitates to ask people for alms, he sees a word oysters on a placard. Since he does
not know what oysters look like, he asks his father what oysters are and imagines a delicious fish
soup, however, when his father tells what oysters really look like, he starts to feel disgusted. When he
is crying for oysters, two gentlemen drag him to the restaurant to let him eat oysters. In the end, he
gets to eat oysters, but it does not make him satisfied, in fact, it makes him sick.
On the other hand, Powder, written by Tobias Wolff, takes a place in the modern state of Washington.
The author begins with the story by telling that the father and his son go to Mount Baker for skiing.
The father has a difficult relationship with his wife that they are about to break up. When he and his
son decide to go home, they are unable to do so because the road is closed due to snow. Since the
father wants to go home as quick as possible, he tries to call state troopers to move away, which is
breaking law. Oysters and Powder seems to have few relationships with each other because of the
different settings. However, they contain some important similarities and

Paul s By Paul Summary
Introduction
Our spritual journey is harsh. Thanks to the development of media, a plethora of information facilities
our life as Christians. However, in other words, our identity of Christian are always in risk of jeopardy
by wrong or extreme information. Paul, who handled a numerous problem of the incipient Church,
would give the answer to us, who are waiting for the second coming of Jesus as the early church was.
I believe that Paul would encourage us, who are already citizens of heaven, to go forward to the glory
of Jesus wholeheartedly, whereas respecting the fruits of the race of Christian journey to obtain the
trophy of transformation into Jesus. By exegeting and analyzing Philippians 3:17 4:1 with consulting

As people of Philippi enjoy all rights, and public service of Rome, they are also eligible for all

Roman citizen in Philippi would be familiar with these conjoined terms applied to Caesar, and they

Alluding to the hymn (2:5 11) by using the words, form, humiliation and power, the next verse
elucidates the privilege of the citizen of heaven. Again, Paul shows his paradoxical theology by using
opposite words, humiliation and glory, impressing the paradoxical dynamism of salvation with a
divine initiative on the recipients. Interestingly, Paul does not use the plural form, but use singular
form, our body. By this, Paul probably shows the communal characteristic of salvation here.
Confirming his point by further exhortation, stand firm, Paul conculdes his presentation (4:1). He
mentions his trophy of the stoic race (3:12 14) is not only resurrection (3:10), transformation (3:21),
but also the congregation in Philippi. Thus, Paul seems to regard the Church as risen body of

Genital Herpes Essay
I have infected 45 million Americans and will infect 1 million more Americans each year. Who am I?
Herpes, from the ancient Greek meaning to creep or crawl, is the name of a family of viruses of which
herpes simplex virus 1 and herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV 1 and HSV 2) are the most serious human
pathogens. HSV 1 is normally associated with orofacial infections and encephalitis, whereas HSV 2
usually causes genital infections and can be transmitted from infected mothers to neonates. Both
viruses establish latent infections in sensory neurons and, upon reactivation, cause lesions at or near
point of entry into the body.

These signs can last from two to three weeks. The early symptoms can include an itching or burning
sensation; pain in the legs, buttocks, or genital area; vaginal discharge; or a feeling of pressure in the

Within a few days, sores (also called lesions) appear at the site of infection. Lesions can also occur on
the cervix in women or in the urinary passage in men. These small red bumps may develop into
blisters or painful open sores. Over a period of days, the sores become crusted and then heal without
scarring. Other symptoms of a first episode of genital herpes can include fever, headache, muscle
aches, painful or difficult urination, vaginal discharge, and swollen glands in the groin area.
Anyone infected with either virus can experience flare ups. In people who have healthy immune
systems, a herpes flare up usually lasts a few weeks. In people with compromised immune systems the
herpes sores can last for longer than a month. In a very small number of cases, herpes can spread to
other organs, including the eyes, the throat, the lungs, and the brain.
HSV 1 and HSV 2 look identical under the microscope, and either type can infect the mouth or

waist. Both HSV 1 and HSV 2 live in nerve cells, usually under

The Importance Of Characters In The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz
In today s society, the variety of experiences one endures throughout his lifetime develops the full
potential of his character. In L. Frank Baum s, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the quest of the minor
characters, the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Cowardly Lion, contribute to their individual
discoveries of inner strength. The self acclaimed unintelligent Scarecrow demonstrates his smarts and
resourcefulness multiple times during the voyage to the Land of Oz but does not acknowledge his full
capability until the end of the trip. Similarly, the Tin Woodman, despite the lack of a physical heart,
does not realize his compassionate acts throughout the journey prove that he is truly a kind, sensitive
man. Whereas the Cowardly Lion is the bravest and courageous out of all the characters throughout
the entire expedition. The tests and trials the minor characters endure on their quest cause each of their
individual characters to grow to their full potential, finding the strength from within they lack.
The Scarecrow is oblivious to his own personal growth and development throughout the journey.
Before he faces challenges on the way to the Land of Oz, he is initially very soft spoken and
unconfident in himself. He believes that, brains are the only things worth having in this world, no
matter whether one is a crow or a man, (Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Baum 47). This statement of his
value for intelligence demonstrates his inability to see the intellect within himself. The desperate
longing for a brain shows how prior to the journey the Scarecrow does not obtain any inner strength to
look highly upon himself. As the travels continue, his actions prove his intelligence but still, he does
not acknowledge the fact. The Scarecrow is a natural born leader with his quick, rational decision
making skills. He instructs the Tinman to, build a raft, so we can float to the other side, and as the
Tinman does as he is told, the Scarecrow finds, on the river bank a tree full of fine fruit, (Baum 82).
The Scarecrow s great solutions to the obstacles set in front of the group are infallible, and his helpful
resourcefulness allows them to survive and further progress on their journey. By the end of the
journey, the Scarecrow is an

Literature Review On Gay Labour Migration

Gay labour migration and uneven landscapes of work
Michele Lynn Barnett
Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University
09/21/2017
Introduction Research conducted by Stonewall, a gay advocacy group in London, shows that people
are coming out, or publicly sharing their inclusion in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender
(LGBT) community, at continually younger ages (Williams, 2010). While this is heartening news,
many persons who are just coming out of the closet are well into adulthood. For those who are
adjusting to being able to live truthfully and openly with who they really are, there are some real
implications in their lives, mental health, families, careers, and even living situations (Human, 2017,
para. 2). While most of these adjustments can be seen as positive changes, some of the changes may
also necessitate secondary changes, such as moving (or migrating) into sectors and workplaces where
they perceive their sexuality to be more accepted, and to locales where they expect to be better
protected (Lewis Mills, 2016, p. 2498).
Migration
Authors Nathaniel M. Lewis and Suzanne Mills present research on gay labor migration, stating that
the norms governing gender and sexuality within various workplaces, economic sectors and locales
continuously influence migration related to work.... [and] the affective needs of [queer] workers both

Socialization Of Mass Media
The mass media participates in this hegemonic process in the way it reveals the social status and
economic class. The mainstream news media often commends the prosperity and values of the
dominant class and weakens the dignity of the working people. This happens largely through the
corporate monopolization and can be seen through analyzing the dominant ideologies of consumerism,
competition and democracy within modern society. Preserving control over people s minds is a
fundamental element of the political power required to maintain the capitalist economic system.
Herman and Chomsky provide a propaganda model that can be used as an agenda to further examine
how the media serves the ends of a dominant elite. The consumer culture is one of the primary forms
of domination and can often interfere with our identities in destructive ways. Companies use the
media as a system of communication to increase commodity consumption in order to generate profit
for capitalists. Mainstream news media are profit driven businesses owned by corporations and are
largely funded by advertisers. Advertising was a significant innovative expansion that influenced the
formation of the consumer. The goal of advertisers was to aggressively shape consumer desires and
create value in commodities by imbuing them with the power to transform the consumer into a more
desirable person (C. Colaguori, 2013, p.173). When linking values to commodities, advertisers are
implanting insecurities and fears

Elephant Symbolism In The Good Braider
Cecelia Ahern, author of Love, Rosie once wrote, Home isn t a place, it s a feeling . This relates to the
main character of The Good Braider by Terry Farish, because for Viola, home is more of a feeling of
stability rather than a place. The Good Braider is a harrowing and eye opening novel depicting the
story of Viola, a teenage girl whose life changes drastically when she flees her home in favor of safety.
Viola leaves life as she knows it in war ravaged South Sudan with her mother and brother on the path
to a better life in Portland, Maine. In Juba, she endured rape, fear, and apprehension. However, she
survived these circumstances with the symbolic help of elephant bone given to Viola by her mother.
As time went on and she immigrated to America, the elephant came to symbolize a connection
between her life back home and her new life in Portland. Towards the end of the novel, the elephant
becomes a symbol of comfort in stressful situations. As you can see, over the course of The Good
Braider, the elephant symbol changes as Viola does; what was once a symbol of strength at the
beginning of Viola s journey transforms into a connection between Juba and Maine, and finally
becomes a form of comfort.
In the beginning of Viola s journey, she faces rape, fear and apprehension in her homeland. She
survives life with the help of a piece of elephant bone given to her by her mother, Yumis. When Viola
was initially given the elephant bone, she notes, When it s dark and the power has gone off, my
mother presses something hard into my palm. I can t see it, but she says it s a bit of elephant bone she
found among the stones farther north on the Nile... No animal can kill the elephant (23) This quote
shows the original meaning of the elephant bone. It symbolizes strength in that no one can kill the
elephant, which comes into play throughout Viola s life. For instance, in part one of the novel, Viola is
raped by a soldier. She says, I knew the butt of his perik would slam into my head. But then the
elephant appeared to me. Be still, she warned (35). This detail exhibits how in one of the most grim
ordeals of her life, Viola was able to survive because of the symbolic presence of the elephant.

  • 2. TVI Values These parameters are: tone value increase TVI, grey balance, solid tone optical ink density, relative print contrast, color gamut and color difference. Shore durometer PCE DXA was used to measure hardness all the four blankets, which came out as 82 shore A. Later to this, printing pressure between blanket and impression cylinder was measured using a Nip Control Pressure Indicator. On each printing unit, three different pressures between blanket cylinder and impression cylinder were applied and three measurements were taken on different positions of each printing unit. Sheet fed offset machine KBA Rapida 75 was used for printing with FUJIFILM Brillia printing plate. Using black, cyan, magenta and yellow color sequence, 200 sheets of gloss ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 24 different ink sequences are possible by using four process colors Cyan , Magenta , Yellow and Black. Out of these, 5 sequences were selected. Two sequences, YMCK and MYCK were selected based on an informal survey. Next two, CMYK and KCMY were selected because they are industry standards. And last KYMC was selected based on a suggestion from expert. Printing units were interchanged and press runs were conducted in sequence YMCK, MYCK, CMYK, KCMY and KYMC. Dora offset printing machine was used to perform press runs in a pre specified pressroom condition maintained at 280C temperature and 45% relative humidity. Art paper was used as substrate for the study. With the help of spectrophotometer X Rite 528, LAB values, contrast of different samples and density values were measured. Data was analyzed by suitable statistical, quantitative methods and tools. It was found that value of LAB, contrast and density varied for different ink sequence. Results were shown category wise for LAB values , density and contrast as follows: LAB value: KCMY sequence is more suitable for Blue, Brown and Violet color. Whereas CMYK, MYCK, YMCK, and KYMC sequence were appropriate for Orange, Green, Red and Purple color according to delta E values. • 3. The Quiet American Fallujah s End Sunday 20th April 2004 Afghanistan. It has not always been like this. There was once peace in this land, though peace is now naught but a faded memory. When I first came here, i only saw the smiles of the kids in the streets just kicking a ball or running around. Now what I see is half broken roads with half or completely destroyed buildings with possibly invisible bombs around the roads. Instead of travelling around this city in a taxi, I have to travel in a goddamn Humvee. 6 years ago it was, when I first landed here in a plane, being forced to come here to negotiate with the government of Afghanistan with that of mine, USA that is. They call me the Mr. Negotiator as apparently I can negotiate with other people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was only 7 o clock. I took a cold shower, since the time I have been here in this country; I have only taken 2 hot showers. Sure, at first it was the worst thing to do during a day, now its normal, suited to my lifestyle. By the chattering and shouting I heard in the morning, seems as though Chris hadn t come back last night. That had settled my plan for today as I planned to go search the city to find him. Even though he was different, narrow minded and wanted different things, he was still my friend in a way, I think... Chris s special ops team had tried to search for him all day, but still no clue as to where he would be. As for me I had been going in around the buildings and saw one of the most horrible sights, which I could never forget. Literally, an army of dead bodies situated in the middle of the road. If I had remembered correctly, this had been the route I had taken to come to the air base. These bodies were not here before. This must have happened last night. Unconsciously, I had started to suspect Chris of being responsible for something like this. It was close to midnight, I had searched for Chris all day. It seemed as though he s completely disappeared. Obviously the search team would have searched this city inside out by now. Suddenly, I had heard a loud voice, as if they had been screaming at the top of their lungs. Hey! I turned around to where the voice ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Hurricane Katrina s Impact On New Orleans Essay Migration, whether permanent or temporary, has always been a traditional response or survival strategy of people confronting the prospect, impact or aftermath of disasters (Hugo 1996). However, today, more than ever, the complex nature of disasters such as Hurricane Katrina in the city of New Orleans, bring with them an enormous potential for the uprooting of large numbers of people. The increasing complexity of disasters is rooted in the interplay of social and economic factors in the environment, exacerbating the vulnerability of people and environments and intensifying their impacts when they occur. Hurricane Katrina s impact on New Orleans was compounded by an excessive dependence on technology and half a century s assault on the natural defenses of the environment of southern Louisiana, leaving the city tragically vulnerable. Virtually the entire population of the city has been displaced, a large proportion of it perhaps permanently, presenting a host of profound economic, social and psychological challenges to individuals, communities and all levels of government. Despite technological and scientific advances in prediction and mitigation, we have seen a serious increase in both mortality and economic losses from disasters since 1960, particularly in the developing world. Disasters are, in fact, increasing in impact and scope through the combined effects of economic, social, demographic, ideological and technological factors. Greater numbers of people are more ... • 5. Analysis Of The Book Stepdaughters And Love Medicine... Family Stepdaughters and Love Medicine Family is interpreted many different ways by many different people. In these two stories Stepdaughters by Max Apple and Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich, we will view the family dynamics differences and similarities. In the story Stepdaughters our author paints a very vivid image of a broken family. Starting with the death of our character Stephanie s father when she was a very small child, but also the fact that her mother Helen had remarried several times clues us in to their incompletion as a whole family. Apple clearly states the newest stepdad saying, I m stepdad number three trying to stay on the sidelines (129).A nonparticipant parent would suggest that he really is not sure if he is going to be around to much longer. In our story Love Medicine our author also paints an image of a broken family. Our character Lipsha comes from a dysfunctional background only to be cared for in what may seem to others as a dysfunctional situation as well. Starting out as a youth he was told his mother did not want him, only to be cared for by someone who never lets him forget he was rescued by her. Grandma Kashpaw would tell him he was the biggest waste on the planet and she saved him from his mother who wanted to drown him. Lipsha felt there was not that many thank you left to be said (Erdrich 376). Although our two stories have images of broken homes. Stepdaughters shows genuine love between Stephanie and her mother ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Migrations In International Migration International Migration is not new. There are many countries in poverty where people seek opportunities far from home. Jason Pribilsky in La Chulla Vida , and Deborah Boehm in Intimate Migrations , showed us migrants from two countries, Mexico and Ecuador. There is a story behind every migration, and the experiences the migrants go through have some similarities and differences. One of the major factors driving migrants is the state of the economy. Ecuadorian migrants were coming to the United States since the 1970s, but the intention was only to work a couple of years and return home. Starting from the 1990s, the economic situation forced widespread poverty and thousands of people went to find work in New York (Pribilsky 2007, P.8). The Mexican migration started as early as the 1800s, but there was a mass of migrants returning home. Mass migration from Mexico heightened in the 1990s, especially after the Peso Crisis of 1994 (Depalma A. 1994). From the moment the migrants decide to cross the border, they are put into danger. Many migrants encounter problems in reaching the border and return home, some migrants die, especially while traveling as cargo in the sea from Ecuador. Most migrants from Mexico who successfully crossed owned debt to cayotes (Boehm 2012, 91). The migrants from Ecuador deal with the debt from chulqueros (loan sharks) back home (Pribilsky 2007, 163). Once the migrants make it to the U.S., it still does not guarantee them to find a job right away, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Four Characteristics Essay Comparison Of Four Ecosystems Comparison of Four Ecosystem Essay Assignment An ecosystem is the relationship between the biotic and abiotic components. Biotic components are composed of all living things in contrast, abiotic components are composed of the non living parts of an environment. (Ms. Blackshaw) This essay is focused on the abiotic factors that influence an ecosystem. They are many abiotic factors affecting an ecosystem such as temperature, water, wind, sunlight, rocks, soil, and oxygen. However, the three abiotic factors that affect a parking lot, field, meadow, and forest the greatest are wind, rock and water. Wind is defined as the movement of the air. Even though, Wind is an abiotic factor it is still vital for various ecosystems. In parking lots, wind is non prominent due to the lack of trees compared to the forest, where it is chilly and windy. Some biotic factors that were recorded in the parking lot were, grass, tress, and dandelions. Dandelions are important for bees and other organisms that consume nectar. Without wind, the dandelion blossoms would not be able to blow away creating more dandelions for bees and other insects to consume. This gives the organisms less nectar and it may cause death because the lack of resources for them to consume in that area. Fields produce more wind currents compared to parking lots because its an open space, with more trees. Since there are not a lot of interferences with the fields, wind picks up grass pollens and spreads it throughout the fields making the fields richer and healthier. This allows the primary consumers to eat the grass and be healthy. Causing the entire food chain to be healthy. Meadows compared to fields, have a bit more wind due to the trees and bushes that compose the ecosystem. The winds help for cooling birds and insects. Wind also affects plants throughout their growth. Slight winds help the plants grow sturdier, so other consumers can benefit from it. Winds in forests are very high due to the number of trees. Due to more wind, it helps animals such as birds to fly without much effort and the same with butterfly s. Without wind in forests animals that fly tend to struggle a lot because it does not have wind support. Rock or stone is a natural substance. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This can be categorized as an ethical system, which is defined as a structured set of principles that defines what is moral (Pollock, 2015). Ethical systems have a variety of characteristics, which create a blue print to how individuals make critical decisions. The two ethical systems I relate to are, ethics of care and relativism. Ethics of care is an ethical system which focuses on preserving and enriching relationships while also meeting the needs of others (Pollock, 2015). Applying Ethics of Care An example for ethics of care within the justice system is the concept of restorative justice. Restorative justice highlights mending the relationships between an offender and the victim; additionally, it brings the victim and offender together throughout this process (Alberta Government, n.d.). Restorative justice supports ethics of care, as it focuses on the interpersonal relationships versus a punitive approach, which is a key characteristic to this system. Moreover, the offender, victim, and family members are involved in this process, supporting that all parties needs are considered. A personal example for ethics of care was when I was working at Park Place Mall where there was an individual who was extremely emotionally distraught. This individual was exhibiting behaviours, which are consistent with someone who was going to steal something, and was acting out towards the staff members in that store. I walked up to this individual and began to talk to this person building rapport. After some time, this individual wanted me to pay for their clothing items because they were embarrassed by the situation. I paid for the items, and met them outside the mall, where this individual started explaining how they wanted to commit suicide. • 11. Summary Of Red China Blues By Mao Zedong On April 27, 1989, hundreds of Chinese protestors took a stand against the oppressive and corrupt government to fight for reform and democracy by occupying Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China. The protests were preceded by a memorial for Hu Yaobang, a Communist leader unpopular amongst Party members for his liberal ideas and lack of enthusiasm for Marxism and Maoism. Marxism is the political theories of Karl Marx which became the basis of Communism and the inspiration for Mao Zedong to create Maoism. Approximately 100,000 students had traveled to Tiananmen Square for Hu Yaobang s memorial. Following the memorial, students presented a petition to meet with Premier Li Peng which the government refused. This led to a boycott of universities but also led to more demand for democracy. Catalyzing the protests was the unfair treatment of the Chinese people at the hands of the Chinese Communist Party. Along with students, civil servants, scholars and laborers joined the protests, risking their lives, jobs and reputations. One part is the id: the part of a person that is pleasure driven. It is the part of the personality structure that runs on instinctual desires. On the opposite end of the spectrum, there is superego. Superego is the section of one s personality that is only concerned with others opinions and must have perfect behavior in order to please others. Finally there is ego, the reality of one s personality. It is what one actually does to try to please both extremes of their personality. Though everyone has parts of each within them, some people have one part of their personality outshine the others. In the tv series Friends , directed by Robby Benson, the three parts of the psyche are demonstrated through the three main characters Chandler, Ross and Joey. Joey Tribbiani represents the id, he lives by the pleasure principle and is concerned primarily with immediate gratification. Ross clearly corresponds with the ego and operates on the reality principle. While he certainly likes the same pleasurable things as Joey, he derives his satisfaction through more realistic long term means. Lastly, Chandler completes the set representing the superego. He internalizes cultural norms and expectations which realizes the feeling of guilt or shame. From friends to their life s passion these horses are what really drives them and neither of them would be the same without them. Throughout this passage there are multiple effects that come from Cormac McCarthy s choices of literary techniques and structure of the passage. • 20. Analysis Of River Out Of Eden And The Art Of War It is difficult to argue whether strategy is an art form or science because it can actually be both. Sun Tzu s text, The Art of War is an example of an ancient humanism text about strategies of war. Humanism by definition is, an outlook or system of thought attaching prime importance to human rather than divine or supernatural matters. Humanist beliefs stress the potential value and goodness of human beings, emphasize common human needs, and seek solely rational ways of solving human problems (Dictionary.com). Therefore, humanism is much like philosophy which is related to science yet influenced by the skill of art. Thomas Cleary starts off the text with a quote from The Book of Balance and Harmony which states, To know after seeing is not worthy of being called knowing (qtd. in Cleary, xv xvi), but since Sun Tzu s teachings are philosophical the text renders itself as war knowledge. In River Out of Eden: A Darwinian View of Life , author and biologist Richard Dawkins would greatly disagree with Cleary s quote because Dawkins believes that, Scientific beliefs are supported by evidence, and they get results (Dawkins 33). According to Dawkins, Darwinism has the power to explain natural occurrences in the universe and his mission is to disprove supernatural views of creation and the world with observable scientific knowledge. Interestingly, Paul does not use the plural form, but use singular form, our body. By this, Paul probably shows the communal characteristic of salvation here. Confirming his point by further exhortation, stand firm, Paul conculdes his presentation (4:1). He mentions his trophy of the stoic race (3:12 14) is not only resurrection (3:10), transformation (3:21), but also the congregation in Philippi. • 27. Genital Herpes Essay I have infected 45 million Americans and will infect 1 million more Americans each year. Who am I? Herpes, from the ancient Greek meaning to creep or crawl, is the name of a family of viruses of which herpes simplex virus 1 and herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV 1 and HSV 2) are the most serious human pathogens. HSV 1 is normally associated with orofacial infections and encephalitis, whereas HSV 2 usually causes genital infections and can be transmitted from infected mothers to neonates. Both viruses establish latent infections in sensory neurons and, upon reactivation, cause lesions at or near point of entry into the body. While HSV 1 and HSV 2 are different viruses, under a ... The early symptoms can include an itching or burning sensation; pain in the legs, buttocks, or genital area; vaginal discharge; or a feeling of pressure in the abdominal region. Within a few days, sores (also called lesions) appear at the site of infection. Lesions can also occur on the cervix in women or in the urinary passage in men. These small red bumps may develop into blisters or painful open sores. Over a period of days, the sores become crusted and then heal without scarring. Other symptoms of a first episode of genital herpes can include fever, headache, muscle aches, painful or difficult urination, vaginal discharge, and swollen glands in the groin area. Anyone infected with either virus can experience flare ups. In people who have healthy immune systems, a herpes flare up usually lasts a few weeks. In people with compromised immune systems the herpes sores can last for longer than a month. In a very small number of cases, herpes can spread to other organs, including the eyes, the throat, the lungs, and the brain. HSV 1 and HSV 2 look identical under the microscope, and either type can infect the mouth or genitals. Most commonly, however, HSV 1 occurs above the waist, and HSV 2 occurs below the waist. • 28. The Importance Of Characters In The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz In today s society, the variety of experiences one endures throughout his lifetime develops the full potential of his character. In L. Frank Baum s, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the quest of the minor characters, the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Cowardly Lion, contribute to their individual discoveries of inner strength. The self acclaimed unintelligent Scarecrow demonstrates his smarts and resourcefulness multiple times during the voyage to the Land of Oz but does not acknowledge his full capability until the end of the trip. Similarly, the Tin Woodman, despite the lack of a physical heart, does not realize his compassionate acts throughout the journey prove that he is truly a kind, sensitive man. Whereas the Cowardly Lion is the bravest and courageous out of all the characters throughout the entire expedition. The tests and trials the minor characters endure on their quest cause each of their individual characters to grow to their full potential, finding the strength from within they lack. The Scarecrow is oblivious to his own personal growth and development throughout the journey. Before he faces challenges on the way to the Land of Oz, he is initially very soft spoken and unconfident in himself. He believes that, brains are the only things worth having in this world, no matter whether one is a crow or a man, (Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Baum 47). This statement of his value for intelligence demonstrates his inability to see the intellect within himself. The desperate longing for a brain shows how prior to the journey the Scarecrow does not obtain any inner strength to look highly upon himself. As the travels continue, his actions prove his intelligence but still, he does not acknowledge the fact. The Scarecrow is a natural born leader with his quick, rational decision making skills. He instructs the Tinman to, build a raft, so we can float to the other side, and as the Tinman does as he is told, the Scarecrow finds, on the river bank a tree full of fine fruit, (Baum 82). The Scarecrow s great solutions to the obstacles set in front of the group are infallible, and his helpful resourcefulness allows them to survive and further progress on their journey. Literature Review On Gay Labour Migration A literature review of seeking security: Gay labour migration and uneven landscapes of work Michele Lynn Barnett Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University 09/21/2017 Introduction Research conducted by Stonewall, a gay advocacy group in London, shows that people are coming out, or publicly sharing their inclusion in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community, at continually younger ages (Williams, 2010). While this is heartening news, many persons who are just coming out of the closet are well into adulthood. For those who are adjusting to being able to live truthfully and openly with who they really are, there are some real implications in their lives, mental health, families, careers, and even living situations (Human, 2017, para. 2). While most of these adjustments can be seen as positive changes, some of the changes may also necessitate secondary changes, such as moving (or migrating) into sectors and workplaces where they perceive their sexuality to be more accepted, and to locales where they expect to be better protected (Lewis Mills, 2016, p. 2498). Migration Authors Nathaniel M. Lewis and Suzanne Mills present research on gay labor migration, stating that the norms governing gender and sexuality within various workplaces, economic sectors and locales continuously influence migration related to work.... • 30. Socialization Of Mass Media The mass media participates in this hegemonic process in the way it reveals the social status and economic class. The mainstream news media often commends the prosperity and values of the dominant class and weakens the dignity of the working people. This happens largely through the corporate monopolization and can be seen through analyzing the dominant ideologies of consumerism, competition and democracy within modern society. Preserving control over people s minds is a fundamental element of the political power required to maintain the capitalist economic system. Herman and Chomsky provide a propaganda model that can be used as an agenda to further examine how the media serves the ends of a dominant elite. The consumer culture is one of the primary forms of domination and can often interfere with our identities in destructive ways. Companies use the media as a system of communication to increase commodity consumption in order to generate profit for capitalists. Mainstream news media are profit driven businesses owned by corporations and are largely funded by advertisers. Advertising was a significant innovative expansion that influenced the formation of the consumer. The goal of advertisers was to aggressively shape consumer desires and create value in commodities by imbuing them with the power to transform the consumer into a more desirable person (C. Colaguori, 2013, p.173). When linking values to commodities, advertisers are implanting insecurities and fears ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. Elephant Symbolism In The Good Braider Cecelia Ahern, author of Love, Rosie once wrote, Home isn t a place, it s a feeling . This relates to the main character of The Good Braider by Terry Farish, because for Viola, home is more of a feeling of stability rather than a place. The Good Braider is a harrowing and eye opening novel depicting the story of Viola, a teenage girl whose life changes drastically when she flees her home in favor of safety. Viola leaves life as she knows it in war ravaged South Sudan with her mother and brother on the path to a better life in Portland, Maine. In Juba, she endured rape, fear, and apprehension. However, she survived these circumstances with the symbolic help of elephant bone given to Viola by her mother. As time went on and she immigrated to America, the elephant came to symbolize a connection between her life back home and her new life in Portland. Towards the end of the novel, the elephant becomes a symbol of comfort in stressful situations. As you can see, over the course of The Good Braider, the elephant symbol changes as Viola does; what was once a symbol of strength at the beginning of Viola s journey transforms into a connection between Juba and Maine, and finally becomes a form of comfort. In the beginning of Viola s journey, she faces rape, fear and apprehension in her homeland. She survives life with the help of a piece of elephant bone given to her by her mother, Yumis. When Viola was initially given the elephant bone, she notes, When it s dark and the power has gone off, my mother presses something hard into my palm. I can t see it, but she says it s a bit of elephant bone she found among the stones farther north on the Nile... No animal can kill the elephant (23) This quote shows the original meaning of the elephant bone. It symbolizes strength in that no one can kill the elephant, which comes into play throughout Viola s life. For instance, in part one of the novel, Viola is raped by a soldier. She says, I knew the butt of his perik would slam into my head. But then the elephant appeared to me. Be still, she warned (35). This detail exhibits how in one of the most grim ordeals of her life, Viola was able to survive because of the symbolic presence of the elephant. Because she visualized it, ...
