Implementation and Impact
Recommendations
In today's competitive environment checking service quality is considered as an important strategy
to retain the customers. Gap analysis is a tool to check the differences between standards set and
service delivered. The main concern was identified through the evaluation of the findings is the
improvement of customer expectations in Johannesburg branch. This study was conducted to
improve customer's expectation and retain them. The author perceived expectations could be
improved far better than it is currently to avoid poor service delivery.
The gap is between service quality specifications and service delivery, where employees can
improve to meet the standard set by Volvo and leave up brand values. ... Show more content on

The recommendation is made to Volvo at Head Office, to implement in the management strategies
of management teams at Volvo branch level. The gap that has been identified is more of an
opportunity for the company to improve on than for competitors.
There are five focus areas that were identified by the author to see if Volvo delivers brand was
welcoming at branch level, the feedback and follow–up by employee, communication of the brand
by the employees, marketing & communications evaluation, customer satisfaction and customer
loyalty.
1. Feedback and follow–up by employee
The follow–up from the sales executives from Pretoria and Johannesburg Volvo branch was good.
For a number of the groups there was follow up pertaining the products they promoted or
quotations. The author received follow–ups by telephone calls or email messages.
It is recommended that the follow–up with the customers must be a priority and promote their
products to customers. Although the proposals are on Volvo letterheads, the e–mail message should
have the same professional appearance.

public transportation is cheaper and more convenient because it is close to every location that you
may need as well as lack of parking spots that make parking seem endless. On the top of
disadvantages, is the stereotype that the worst drivers in Russia are females? These were my reasons
why I started to drive only at 23, the perfect age when I just moved to US. The thought that I will

Bastion Of Correctness
The Automotive Media: Last Bastion of Sanity in the World of Political Correctness Welcome to the
automotive world, the last holdout in the battle against political correctness. This is one of the few
places left where one can make a statement about women and men and not be assaulted with court
cases or be accused of being a bigot. In the automotive media, it is still acceptable to represent men
in business suits driving luxury vehicles, and to show mothers driving their kids in a minivan. There
is one simple reason that the automotive media has remained unadulterated by political correctness–
money. As a private industry, both car manufacturers and aftermarket companies have one goal, to
sell cars and car related products, and to make ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This ad shows us the more traditional view of the male as a powerful businessman, and one who is
always in control. This advertisement for Volvo was also featured in the September 2006 issue of
Car and Driver. This image varies significantly from the Jaguar ad. It depicts a woman driving a car
with two male passengers. However, despite the more modern view of women, this ad has
undertones which reveal much about the differences in the way men and women think. For years,
Volvo has been has set the bar for automotive safety. In general this tends to appeal more to female
audiences. For most men safety is rather low on their list of considerations when purchasing a
vehicle. Quite the opposite is true for women; safety is of top concern. This ad initially looks
progressive and PC, but when one considers brand history and who the ad actually targets, it
becomes evident that Volvo recognizes that women are more safety oriented than men, and as such
are a more appropriate market for their vehicles. This violates the foremost assumption of PC–that
men and women viewed in the same way. When more research into Volvo's marketing techniques is
done, even more can be learned about the company's target audience and the methods used to reach
them. In 2004, Volvo unveiled a concept known as the Volvo YCC. This car was different from the
beginning–it was to be the first car designed by women, for women. The design team consisted of

sometimes makes quality take a backseat. The company is overstaffed and hence human resource
utilization is sub optimal. Also decision making gets a hard hit due to extensive hierarchy prevalent
at Tata Motors. They do not have a presence in high volume markets like Europe and America. Not

Environment and Root Cause Analysis Navistar considered quality and on–time delivery as a
priority that came before costs; therefore, top management as well as initiatives to improve
processes and on–time delivery supported various improvement initiatives to quality programs.
Andy is an assembly supervisor but had very broad job responsibilities. Andy's time was taken up in
areas such as supplier quality evaluations, internal process documentation, process improvement,
and much more. His focus was very widespread and his day was drawn away from scheduled and
unscheduled meetings; this position required long hours and weekend work. In addition to the
quality issues, truck interior trim shortages was another challenge, which resulted in reordering of
trim parts leading to additional material handling, and post–assembly installation. These delayed
parts required overtime that increased cost and delayed delivery of the finished truck of the
customer. Issues came from both Navistar and their supplier Trimco. Navistar had design changes
such as different sizes, repositioning of mechanisms and other various designer and material
changes; however, these changes to the truck interiors were not communicated to Trimco before
production runs were completed. As a result, parts were shipped with different specifications than
those needed for proper fit during assembly. Due to the lack of coordination and communication,

Gender, Race, And Class
In the All–New Volvo XC90 commercial the first words to appear on the screen is "What is
Luxury?" In this commercial it appears that luxury can only be afforded by primarily white, rich
males. The media in the United States has made a lot of progress towards showing gender and racial
equality on TV but America still has a long way to go. As of 2015 white men still have a patriarchal
ranking in media compared to women and minorities. This essay will be discussing how
intersectionality, such as gender, race, and class, play a key part in gender roles in TV media today.
Luxury is the main focus in Volvo Cars US' commercial for their new Volvo XC90; but what does
luxury mean? According to Merriam Webster Online, the definition of luxury is something that is
expensive and not necessary ("Luxury"). But according to the All–New Volvo XC90 commercial,
luxury signifies simplicity, a sanctuary, confidence, and safety. First of all this commercial is
showing that all of those things are expensive and they are not a necessity to live. Anyone can gain a
sanctuary and confidence for free. Those things do not come from buying something expensive, they
come from how an individual feels about oneself. In the commercial it shows a white man driving
and navigating the touch screen GPS system while a white woman sits in the passenger seat and

The XC60 offers nearly 31 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat or 67.4 cubic feet when the

The XC60 features standard leather–covered seats and a thickly padded steering wheel also wrapped
in leather. The interior is clean and ordered, even utilitarian, without the chrome embellishments and
other touches that usually define luxury models. The emphasis here is on ergonomics and in this
department the XC60 excels – buttons and knobs have been carefully placed and are easy to reach.
The instrument panel is uncluttered and drama free.
This SUV's sight lines are excellent, supplying a panoramic view of the road ahead. The rear
window is large and provides an unobstructed view of the road behind. Thick rear roof pillars enable
this model to score high in rollover tests, but the compromise here are the large blind spots that go
with it. That's typical of any SUV and Volvo employs the attendant safety features to mitigate the

Essay on Ford Competition
In a present day of global warming, environmental issues, labor unions, and other impacts, the
automobile industry is in an era of instability and change. Ford Motor Company has been
traditionally considered one of the "Big Three" in the auto industry, but they are not adapting as well
as hoped to the changing industry, and will have to strategize to survive in a struggling industry.
There are many different risk factors for Ford and its competitors. In this paper we will look at two
competitors for Ford that are also considered to be members of the "Big Three" and coincidently, are
not adapting to changes in the auto industry as quickly as other competitors. These other companies
are General Motors (GM) and Daimler Chrysler. We will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Ford feels that although steps have been taken to lower their health care expenses, the cost to the
company will continue to rise for the foreseeable future. Foreign car manufacturers have on average
lower health care and employee costs, giving them an advantage over Ford, GM, and Daimler
Chrysler. Ford Motor Co is hoping to take steps to offset the costs of employee benefits; however,
this could also lead to negative publicity for the company. Foreign auto makers are able to maintain
lower costs with non–unionized and on average, younger employees. The next risk factor for the
auto industry is commodity and energy price increases. Steel and resin (plastic) are the two most
used commodities for auto manufacturers, and they are products in high demand for many
industries. Rising awareness of sustainability and rising demand for these products has lead to recent
price increases, and it is estimated to continue this trend. This factor targets all of the auto industry,
but again hits the big three and other auto manufacturers harder then it does some of the foreign car
manufacturers. Japanese auto makers have long been seen as efficient smaller car manufacturers,
where the "big three" have moved to the larger SUV type vehicle. By building smaller vehicles,
Japanese auto makers reduce their dependency and therefore their costs on steel and resin. The
second risk coming from the comparative sizes of vehicles being manufactured by the auto makers
is the cost

leading in green technologies, safety and driving ahead with connectivity and mobility concepts

celebrates great success. Most large business firms usually prepare a meticulous strategic plan.
Various strategies need to be evaluated before the choice comes upon one, and a critical element in
the choosing is time. Even the best product in the market may fail in the case that they are being
revealed at an inappropriate time for the consumers. In 2014, Mercedes Benz announced its plan to
introduce up to 30 new models by 2020, 11 of which would be all new (Daimler, 2014). In wake of
the planned execution preparation, Mercedes has additionally changed its naming strategy for the

The real event of 1990 was one whereby a monster truck, which because of its scope was given the
name "Bear Foot", cantered over the roofs of cars covered in its path, one of which was a Volvo. The
huge truck crushed all the other vehicles in its way, except the Volvo wagon and thus the new
concept of the car 's enhanced power was adopted. Instant manufacture of an announcement to serve
as an adaptation of the stunt in the rally in both print and television advertisements began. The Volvo
Car Company selected the promoting agencies of Scali, Mc Cabe and Solves. The manufacture
crew, in an effort to allow the Volvo car to endure the number of takes in the required filming of the
advertisement, protected the roof of the Volvo with lumber and steel, and partially sawed through
the roof support of the other cars. The announcement made no mention of the statement that it was a
renovation of the events of 1990, and thus leading consumers to believe that it was the actual stunt.
This was Volvo 's big error. This act flashed attention in the attorney general of Texas, who
concluded that the cars were equipped and subsequently accused Volvo with customer deception.
Though engineers in their investigation determined that the Volvo car could endure the weight of a
five–ton truck and that the ad was not deceptive, the Volvo car company speedily established the
lawsuit, compensated the state of Texas for

By taking over Volvo, Geely can own a lot of advanced exclusive technologies, and patents, which

Descriptive Essay About My First Car
My first car My journey began on a spring day, when my boyfriend at that time–now my husband
said that is right time to buy a car. Even though I was 23 at that moment, I had a feeling like I will
be so independent despite the fact that from the age of 18 years old I didn't live with my parents ,I
traveled in Europe by myself and I was already an independent person. In contrast with the US, in
Russia the minimum age to drive a car is 18 years old, but there is no much in a car because the
public transportation is cheaper and more convenient because it is close to every location that you
may need as well as lack of parking spots that make parking seem endless. On the top of
disadvantages, is the stereotype that the worst drivers in Russia are females? These were my reasons
why I started to drive only at 23, the perfect age when I just moved to US. The thought that I will
have a car, my own car, made me feel very confident in myself. Thinking about my future first car
made me so happy like I was a child expecting for Christmas gifts, unwrapping the presents without
any idea about what is inside of the box. Unlike a child, I knew what is inside of the box, something
that suits my budget, around 2 or 3 thousand. I was searching a car not for its shape, color or model
but by my budget. As every first car owner I wanted a car that will be cheap in maintenance, with
the lowest gas mileage , new inside and outside and with a clean title. My dreams were destroyed

Case Study 2.2: The Failed Merger between Renault and Volvo
In 1993, merger talks finally broke down between Renault and Volvo. A merger between the two
companies had seemed the inevitable consequence of a number of years of collaboration and the
plans seemed well set.
Cooperation between the two firms had begun in 1990 when Renault took a 25 per cent share in
Volvo cars and a 45 per cent share in their truck division. Volvo, for its part, took a 20 per cent share
in Renault. The early collaboration took the form of an exchange of engines, the joint purchasing of
components and joint developments in quality control. The cooperative arrangements between the
two companies were a constant source of internal criticism, which focused on ... Show more content

In part, the unease of the Swedes could be traced back to their ambivalence about EU membership,
which they eventually took in 1995.
Opposition mounted in Sweden among several groups of stakeholders. The merger was to take place
before the privatization of Renault. The French government had no published timetable for the sale
and Swedish shareholders feared either nationalization by the French of Volvo or a fall in share
price. They believed that the share price would be devalued, fearing that the French government
would underprice the company to ensure a successful sale. Volvo employees, including many of the
less senior managers, became increasingly convinced that a merger would mean a loss of Swedish
jobs. Renault had already demonstrated its ability to make significant productivity improvements
and there was a belief that such methods would be transferred to Sweden, resulting in yet more
restructuring. This fear was understandable given the difference in 1abour costs in the two countries.
Swedish workers enjoyed the highest wages and lowest working hours of any in the European auto
industry. In 1991, hourly labour costs in Sweden were 169 Swedish kronor compared to 96 in
France. The inevitable conclusion was that jobs would migrate from Sweden to France, and the
Swedish government, even if they wished, would be prevented from giving special assistance to
Volvo by EU competition policy, even though Sweden was not a member at the time. Eventually,
these fears found

Nature: Tactical and Strategic Timing: Long term and Short Term
Interior trim was provided for each truck in the form of"kits" that contained a specific group of
sequenced interior trim parts necessary to complete each truck. When "kits" were delivered to
Navistar assembly, problem arose when assemblers attempted to assemble the trim into truck, were
not able to do so because of missing or inappropriate interior trim parts. therefore, the subsequent
consequences of trim parts reordering, additional material handling, post–assembling resulted in the
premium on direct materials, labor costs and the delivery delay of finished truck.

idea repeats history where the brand new Mercedes–Benz GLE Coupe also revolved in the latest

Fleet buyers and leasing companies buy the heavy trucks in mass amounts, which are driven by
truck drivers who are the centers of influence in the heavy truck industry. By providing them
comfort through a sleeping cabin, heavy trucks with this feature will change the mindset of drivers
toward Volvo heavy truck segment. The implication for Volvo is an increase in brand awareness in
the industry, created through positive word of mouth from drivers and in the long run, further create
an increase in the market share.
Case Questions
Volvo entered the US heavy truck market in 1975 and missed the opportunity to acquire Freightliner
(Appendix 3), which was acquired by Daimler–Benz and later became the market leader. Due to the
difference in the European and US industry regulations, Volvo was not successful in implementing
the same strategy as they did in Europe. This further made it more difficult to standardize their
product within the heavy truck segment and benefit from economies of scale or scope, thus implying
that the globalization of the heavy truck industry is very difficult.
In 1988 Volvo was unable to meet the high demand of heavy trucks, which led them to acquire GM
Heavy Truck. Unfortunately, Volvo did not use this acquisition to their advantage, and failed to
integrate this acquisition into a higher profit margin. In order to effectively cater to their customers
(fleet operators and leasing companies), Volvo used this opportunity to provide

There are distinctive barriers to entry in the automotive industry. The main 10 firms operating in the
automotive industry have great power in terms of reputation, finances, experience, technology and
existing large product portfolios. It would be highly difficult for a new company to compete with the
above. The existing companies within the industry are joining forces, which at times do have
detrimental effects for new comers to the market and for some existing companies. For instance, the

Introduction
On November 14, 2000 Olav Larsson, Managing Director of Sunwind, eased back in his seat as his
A380 climbed away from Tokyo's Narita Airport to begin the 17 hour flight to Gothenburg, Sweden.
He was returning from a 10–day trip to Japan where he had visited factories of Nissan and Mazda as
well as a number of their parts suppliers. This visit had reinforced his conviction that Sunwind
should initiate a proposal to Volvo, its major customer, that Just–In–Time delivery of floor lids1 be

Average weekly requirements in 2001 were expected to approach 1,400 units. Lars estimated
Sunwind's current single shift capacity at approximately 1,250 units/week. To achieve this, he had
hired an additional 20 people at the beginning of August and established three shift operations on a
numerically controlled milling machine used to shape plywood parts.
Effective capacity was actually less than 1,250 units/week due to equipment failures, e.g. the gluing
machine had proved particularly troublesome and had increased rejects. Recent causes of the rejects
included seeping through the carpeting that covered the plywood forms. Volvo had also rejected a
shipment of floor lids due to differences in the shade of carpeting covering the four separate pieces
which made up a floor lid.
Such difficulties could not have come a worse time, when Lars was already concerned by the world–
wide trend of major manufacturers in the automobile industry to rely on fewer suppliers. He knew
that Toyota, which industry observers continually cited for its productivity gains, relied on only 320
suppliers, while Volvo had over 600. Headlines such as "Volvo will reduce number of suppliers;
pressure on sub–contractors" in Dagens–Nyheter, one of Sweden's major daily newspapers, did not

Ford Motor Company : A Pioneer Essay
Introduction
Ford Motor Company is a pioneer in the automotive industry; based in Dearborn, Michigan it
assembles and distributes automobiles throughout six continents. The company's automotive brands
include Ford and Lincoln. With over 187,000 employees and 62 plants worldwide, the company
additionally provides financial services through Ford Motor Credit Company. By 31 December
2014, Ford sold approximately 6.3 million vehicles worldwide, distributing from 11,980 dealerships.
With no one, dominant producer in the automotive industry, certain manufacturers maintain a
majority of sales in their country of origin. Some of these competitors are the Honda Motor
Company, Hyundai–Kia Automotive Group, Renault–Nissan B.V., Suzuki Motor Corporation and
lastly the Toyota Motor Corporation.
Revenue
Ford recognizes revenues in two sectors, the Automotive and the Financial Service sector. Through
the sales of vehicles, accessories and parts is how Ford generates automotive revenues. The revenue
recognition takes place when the customer takes full ownership upon transfer; this usually happens
at the dealer and distributor levels. Vehicles leased are accounted as operating leases at the time of
sale and the proceeds recorded as deferred revenue under other liabilities and deferred revenue.
Whenever the lease is satisfied there is a sale to an auction at values in line with depreciation over

Both of these points are true, and as a result create a logical chain. These cars are different, and we
are different, right? By relating the Prius to humanity, this logic ends up slightly personifying it, and
seems to almost be attempting to trick the reader into showing this car affection, making buying one

entirely on the Prius's mother company: Toyota. This car brand is easily recognizable among
America, and is one of the most trusted manufacturers around. With a company networth of 236

Toyota primarily through text and imagery. For example, in the bottom right corner, the Toyota logo

my father sitting upon his chair, in the family room, with bloodshot eyes. I was amazed– I never saw
my father cry before. I always thought that he was this extremely tall man who could care less about
what other people thought of him, who could do almost anything, who loved my mother, my
brothers, and I so dearly. I asked him what was the matter, but all he did was tell me to go to my
room and do my homework. Then, I went and asked my mother why my father was acting the way
he was, all she said was, "Your father and I will tell you and your brothers later." It wasn't until
dinner when my mother and father told my younger brothers and I what had happened. My brothers

Effects Of Production Stoppage On Ford Motor 's Single...
Risk #1: Losses caused by production stoppage in Ford Motor's single source suppliers Risk
Description Although single sourcing can create an efficient, low–cost supply chain model for many
top manufacturers like Ford, dependence on a single source can also end up being quite costly for a
company. If one of Ford's single suppliers halts production on any key component for any reason,
there will be adverse effects. As Ford reported in their 2014 annual 10–K filing, many of the
components in their vehicles cannot be re–sourced quickly or inexpensively to another supplier
because of long lead times and new contractual arrangements that the new supplier must follow
(Ford Motor Co.). Ford has had complications with this particular risk in the past. In 1998, faulty
software in a German supplier of door and trunk latches halted production in several of their
factories. After a three–day halt in Ford Fiestas and Pumas, it is estimated that the difficulties cost
Ford up to 7,000 vehicles (Professional Engineering). Another example of the severity of the risk
occurred several months prior to the 1998 Ford incident. Week long national strikes in Denmark
froze Saab's supplier production of key engine parts. The halt in production left Saab without engine
mounts for its newly launched vehicles. Ultimately, 4,250 factory workers were sent home at an
approximate cost of $90,000,000 (inflation adjusted) (Professional Engineering). This has been a
recurring problem in large manufacturers

Automobile Safety Essay
People in developed countries all over the world have come to see automobiles as the preferred way
to travel. They allow independence: point to point transportation without having to rely on others to
get where we want to go, to do what we want to do. Long range travel and short range travel can be
undertaken whenever one desires, either alone or with other people. Citizens of the modern world
must often wonder how people ever lived without automobiles. To think that human beings once
traveled everywhere by foot or on horseback is not just a humorous idea to reminisce; it is foreign
concept that would not allow the social and business culture of today to exist.
It is almost as foreign a concept that early automobiles were driven ... Show more content on

Simple mistakes, that everyone makes, can lead to great harm. Even the most cautious and agile
driver cannot avoid every possible stalled car, unexpected furniture, careless cell phone user, stray
animal, unexpected construction, or drunken driver on the road.
Automobiles are therefore a huge source of potential injury, and even death. In the year 2001 alone,
37, 795 people lost their lives in automobile accidents in the United States. That is more people than
the populations of many small cities in America. In fact, that is over ten times more lives lost than
were lost in the horrible attack on the World Trade Center in 2001! On top of that, over two million
people were injured in automobile accidents in the same time frame.3 Neither of these numbers
includes the thousands of pedestrians who are killed or injured every year by automobiles.
Given the risks involved in the use of automobiles much consideration should be given to how to
best make automobiles safer for humans. Often times, however, safety is not the first consideration
in automobile design. Some automobile manufacturers do not even look carefully at safety
considerations until a new product is sent down the crash test line and adjusted until it makes
government safety requirements. On the other hand, some manufacturers start car design with safety
as their first priority.

In contrast with the US, in Russia the minimum age to drive a car is 18 years old, but there is no much in a car because the public transportation is cheaper and more convenient because it is close to every location that you may need as well as lack of parking spots that make parking seem endless. On the top of disadvantages, is the stereotype that the worst drivers in Russia are females? These were my reasons why I started to drive only at 23, the perfect age when I just moved to US. The thought that I will have a car, my own car, made me feel very confident in myself. Thinking about my future first car made me so happy like I was a child expecting for Christmas gifts, unwrapping the presents without any idea about what is inside of the box. Unlike a child, I knew what is inside of the box, something that suits my budget, around 2 or 3 thousand. I was searching a car not for its shape, color or model but by my budget. As every first car owner I wanted a car that will be cheap in maintenance, with the lowest gas mileage , new inside and outside and with a clean title. My dreams were destroyed very fast, at the ... • 53. Case Study 2.2: the Failed Merger Between Renault and Volvo Case Study 2.2: The Failed Merger between Renault and Volvo In 1993, merger talks finally broke down between Renault and Volvo. A merger between the two companies had seemed the inevitable consequence of a number of years of collaboration and the plans seemed well set. Cooperation between the two firms had begun in 1990 when Renault took a 25 per cent share in Volvo cars and a 45 per cent share in their truck division. Volvo, for its part, took a 20 per cent share in Renault. The early collaboration took the form of an exchange of engines, the joint purchasing of components and joint developments in quality control. The cooperative arrangements between the two companies were a constant source of internal criticism, which focused on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In part, the unease of the Swedes could be traced back to their ambivalence about EU membership, which they eventually took in 1995. Opposition mounted in Sweden among several groups of stakeholders. The merger was to take place before the privatization of Renault. The French government had no published timetable for the sale and Swedish shareholders feared either nationalization by the French of Volvo or a fall in share price. They believed that the share price would be devalued, fearing that the French government would underprice the company to ensure a successful sale. Volvo employees, including many of the less senior managers, became increasingly convinced that a merger would mean a loss of Swedish jobs. Renault had already demonstrated its ability to make significant productivity improvements and there was a belief that such methods would be transferred to Sweden, resulting in yet more restructuring. This fear was understandable given the difference in 1abour costs in the two countries. Swedish workers enjoyed the highest wages and lowest working hours of any in the European auto industry. In 1991, hourly labour costs in Sweden were 169 Swedish kronor compared to 96 in France. The inevitable conclusion was that jobs would migrate from Sweden to France, and the Swedish government, even if they wished, would be prevented from giving special assistance to Volvo by EU competition policy, even though Sweden was not a member at the time. The strategic opportunity is to increase the market share from 11.6% to 20% by 2001 by creating a product differentiation advantage. Through the acquisition of a technologically advanced company, Volvo will be able to gain competitive advantage in the industry. The implication for Volvo is an increase in brand awareness in the industry, created through positive word of mouth from drivers and in the long run, further create an increase in the market share. Case Questions Volvo entered the US heavy truck market in 1975 and missed the opportunity to acquire Freightliner (Appendix 3), which was acquired by Daimler–Benz and later became the market leader. Due to the difference in the European and US industry regulations, Volvo was not successful in implementing the same strategy as they did in Europe. This further made it more difficult to standardize their product within the heavy truck segment and benefit from economies of scale or scope, thus implying that the globalization of the heavy truck industry is very difficult. In 1988 Volvo was unable to meet the high demand of heavy trucks, which led them to acquire GM Heavy Truck. Unfortunately, Volvo did not use this acquisition to their advantage, and failed to integrate this acquisition into a higher profit margin. He was returning from a 10–day trip to Japan where he had visited factories of Nissan and Mazda as well as a number of their parts suppliers. This visit had reinforced his conviction that Sunwind should initiate a proposal to Volvo, its major customer, that Just–In–Time delivery of floor lids1 be made directly onto its 700 series automobile assembly lines at Torslanda, near Gothenburg, Kalmer, a port city on Sweden's east cost, and at Ghent in Belgium. Lars estimated Sunwind's current single shift capacity at approximately 1,250 units/week. To achieve this, he had hired an additional 20 people at the beginning of August and established three shift operations on a numerically controlled milling machine used to shape plywood parts. Effective capacity was actually less than 1,250 units/week due to equipment failures, e.g. the gluing machine had proved particularly troublesome and had increased rejects. Recent causes of the rejects included seeping through the carpeting that covered the plywood forms. Volvo had also rejected a shipment of floor lids due to differences in the shade of carpeting covering the four separate pieces which made up a floor lid. Such difficulties could not have come a worse time, when Lars was already concerned by the world– wide trend of major manufacturers in the automobile industry to rely on fewer suppliers. He knew that Toyota, which industry observers continually cited for its productivity gains, relied on only 320 suppliers, while Volvo had over 600. • 79. Effects Of Production Stoppage On Ford Motor 's Single... Risk #1: Losses caused by production stoppage in Ford Motor's single source suppliers Risk Description Although single sourcing can create an efficient, low–cost supply chain model for many top manufacturers like Ford, dependence on a single source can also end up being quite costly for a company. If one of Ford's single suppliers halts production on any key component for any reason, there will be adverse effects. As Ford reported in their 2014 annual 10–K filing, many of the components in their vehicles cannot be re–sourced quickly or inexpensively to another supplier because of long lead times and new contractual arrangements that the new supplier must follow (Ford Motor Co.). Ford has had complications with this particular risk in the past. In 1998, faulty software in a German supplier of door and trunk latches halted production in several of their factories. After a three–day halt in Ford Fiestas and Pumas, it is estimated that the difficulties cost Ford up to 7,000 vehicles (Professional Engineering). Another example of the severity of the risk occurred several months prior to the 1998 Ford incident. Week long national strikes in Denmark froze Saab's supplier production of key engine parts. The halt in production left Saab without engine mounts for its newly launched vehicles. Ultimately, 4,250 factory workers were sent home at an approximate cost of $90,000,000 (inflation adjusted) (Professional Engineering). This has been a recurring problem in large manufacturers ... Even the most cautious and agile driver cannot avoid every possible stalled car, unexpected furniture, careless cell phone user, stray animal, unexpected construction, or drunken driver on the road. Automobiles are therefore a huge source of potential injury, and even death. In the year 2001 alone, 37, 795 people lost their lives in automobile accidents in the United States. That is more people than the populations of many small cities in America. In fact, that is over ten times more lives lost than were lost in the horrible attack on the World Trade Center in 2001! On top of that, over two million people were injured in automobile accidents in the same time frame.3 Neither of these numbers includes the thousands of pedestrians who are killed or injured every year by automobiles. Given the risks involved in the use of automobiles much consideration should be given to how to best make automobiles safer for humans. Often times, however, safety is not the first consideration in automobile design. Some automobile manufacturers do not even look carefully at safety considerations until a new product is sent down the crash test line and adjusted until it makes government safety requirements. On the other hand, some manufacturers start car design with safety as their first priority. What Does Automobile Safety Have to Offer? Safety systems inside an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
