The Shift Of Perfume
Analysis of the shifts of Grenouille in Patrick SГјskind's Perfume
In Perfume, Patrick SГјskind writes about the life of an extraordinary boy named Grenouille in 18th–century France. The author presents the shifts of
existential thinking of his main character throughout the book. The main purpose of living for Grenouille mirrors that of every other human being – to
discover the world, with his exception of seeking only the scenting part of it. The series of events in the boy's life develop his character and the
various goals he strives for: survival, odor education, perfume making, peace, own smell, smell extraction, and to die.
Grenouille's birth is the start of his first ordeal. In order to survive, his first, primal instinct tells him to make a cry, not for sympathy and love, but
cry for a life. Suskind uses a contrast to show how the neatly born baby brings "himself to people's attention and his mother to the gallow" (21). The
miserable birth or the option of a "modest exit" do not affected the nearly mature decision of Grenouille to grab the opportunity of existing, "sparing
the world a great deal of mischief" (21). His tenacious character is shown from his ability to take all of the power of his nurturer. He ... Show more

It was an unpleasant nightmare that rouses Grenouille from his 7–year phantasy. Suskind uses imagery to illustrate the image of his bad dream:
"Grenouille was completely wrapped in fog, saturated with fog" (133). The most dreadful part of the mysterious fog was its odor, it was the same as
Grenouille's –– scentless. Drowning in his non–existing smell, the dreamer wakes up with a new dedication –– to find his own smell. The book climax
ends with the unsuccessful attempts of the unfortunate to seek for answers to this mystery. The "greatest nose" in Paris which can sense any smell is
ironized to not have any odor

How Does Starvation Affect Larval Behavior
Starvation impacts larval behavior as measured in the two–choice assay a)3rd instar larvae: From previous studies of our lab (Newquist, Novenschi et
al. 2016) we learnt that each larval ORN is functionally diverse and each ORN differentially contributes to olfactory behavior in the Drosophila
melanogaster larvae. Based on these results, we postulated that individual ORNs might be differentially modulated under starved state conditions. To
begin to address this question we started with a panel of seven different odorants from the panel of 19 different odorants published in the study by
(Mathew, Martelli et al. 2013). Each of the seven odorants elicits a strong, specific physiological response from a single ORN (Or 47a ::... Show more

Larvae on each half are counted, RI is calculated using simple equation RI =(S–C)/(S+C) [S denotes number of larvae on the odorant/test side and C
denotes number of larvae towards the control side]. The data from this experiment is presented in Figure 1. When tested for odorant acetal, starved
larvae showed higher RI when compared to non–starved larvae. In other words, starved larvae have a stronger attractive response towards acetal
compared to the non–starved larvae. Next, we looked at the olfactory responses of the remaining six odorants from the panel of seven that were
mentioned above. As mentioned in the previous paragraph, starved and non–starved larvae were subjected to the two–choice assay after 2 hours of the
starvation protocol. Data collected for all seven different odorants are shown in Figure 2. Of all the seven odorants tested, only three odorants showed
significant changes in response indices upon starvation. Acetal (shown in Figure 1), 4, 5–dimethylthiazole, and pentyl acetate were the three odorants
that showed higher RI values for starved state larvae when compared to non–starved larvae. In other words, for these three odorants starved larvae had
higher attractiveness towards odorants compared to non–starved larvae. This supported our hypothesis that individual ORNs might be differentially
modulated by the animal's starved state. b)2nd instar larvae: Next, we looked at the olfactory behavior response of 2nd

What is Olfaction?
Olfaction And Pheromones What is Olfaction? Olfaction is another word or a synonym used for the ability to smell or smell that anything carries
with itself. It is by far one of the oldest senses that human and animals have carried likewise for ages. It allows organisms to identify food, as well
allows them to copulate and evade the threat and danger posed by other predators besides providing sensual as well as warnings of danger pleasure.
For both humans and animals, it is one of the important means by which our environment communicates with us and they communicate with it vice
versa. So in other words it is the means via which one is able to interact with whatever is around us. In light of what has been mentioned in this very
brief paragraph imagine what it would be like if there was no sense of olfaction? What are odors (examples)? The odor of flowers and perfume, smell
of danger like smell of something burning, intoxicants, smell of food and spiciness, smell of something being stale or dead and even smell of
someone that you know as being around you through their body scent and perfumes. Animals often mark their territories by smell and young animals
are able to trace their mothers through the same sense of smell while they are unable to see. Detection of Odorants What is an Odorants? These are
nothing more than the chemical components that are present in the air and are carried through the air as and when we inhale and exhale air. The

Speech On Healthy Summer Vacation
A healthy summer vacation exercise!
Dr. Halit Yerebakan
It is summer time, and most of you are on or will go to summer vacations. It is not surprising that when summer vacations are pronounced aloud, they
are mostly about going to coastal cities. Well when going on a seaside vacation, there are several warnings you should keep in mind and be cautious
about them. You basically should have guessed by now about what I will talk about today, swimming in the pools or the sea, sun bathing, playing
under the sun, eating at hotels, and basically all uncontrolled parts of your vacation. There is no doubt that a noble steed of summer sports is
swimming. No worries, its not bad at all actually it is more special than you think! In the sweltering heat, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The area around the pool, must be paved with smooth and non–slippery stones.
The should never be an odor in the pool. The density of chemical odor is one of the odors that should not be felt in a pool. There wouldn't be a
chemical smell where there is enough circulation. If the degree of chemical smells that disturbs you in the pool, it means that there is a circulation
problem.
If pool pump and filtration filters are working as they should, you can easily hear their sound. Listen to the sound before you start swimming.
While you swim outside, never forget the big picture that may threaten your health. I am talking about sun safety and what you can to protect yourself.
You should always avoid the sun during its peak hours. Although it differs by your region, this is generally between 10'o clock in the morning to
fourteen hours in the afternoon. These are accepted to be the dangerous hour for sun exposure, since skin damaging ultraviolet radiation from the sun
comes right at you, even on cloudy days. You should also wear protective clothing against the sun. I know, everyone would love get a tan! Note that
you can get your tan in the afternoon, instead of cooking yourself under the sun. Protective wear is just like what you generally wear, but only they
should be extra light so that you wont sweat a lot and loose water! And of course you should use sunscreen. When it is summer, every specialist talks
about health options in sunscreens so I don't want to give redundant information about them. But I have heard lately that some people claim that
sunscreen use encourages excessive sun exposure and, as a result, increases the risk of skin cancer! Well there is no strong literature advocating this
claim. But we do advice the use of sunscreens because research has shown that use of sunscreen can reduce the risk of malign melanoma, the most
serious type of skin

Perception, Perception And Perception
Introduction
Learning is defined as the process of gaining knowledge of something or how to do something. As human beings, we tend to learn different things in
the society we live in. learning is essential in the development of both physical and mental growth of human beings. Learning in human beings is
based on what we are able to retain about the new aspect that we have learnt. According to Thomas leahey human beings can forget 78% of whatever
they have leant in 6 days if they do not review it in the within the six day of learning. Learning is related to other aspects of life such as perception

A Rose For Emily By William Faulkner
Miss Emily Grierson, the main character in the strange short story "A Rose for Emily" written by William Faulkner. It would be best to examine
her in a mental capacity as well as the circumstances that may affect her. Throughout the story, Miss Emily's unpredictable and eccentric behavior
becomes unusual, and the reader, like the townspeople in the story, is left to speculate how Miss Emily has spent years living and sleeping with the
body of Homer Barron. An important quote from the story was that the townspeople "did not say she was crazy" at first (Faulkner 159), and even so,
she was never diagnosed nor received treatment by a psychiatric professional. The reader can go back through the history and point out occasions in
which Miss Emily's mentality and actions suggested the probability of a mental illness. This knowledge can support the claim that Miss Emily suffered
from schizophrenia as defined by the American Psychiatric Association's DSM–IV criteria (American Psychiatric Association 159). It is realistic to
suggest that Miss Emily developed this mental illness as a response to the challenging conditions as a Southern woman from a high–class family. When
attempting to diagnose a mental illness, one of the important factors that a doctor examines is the patient's prior history. In the situation of Miss Emily,
an evaluation of the setting and other characters in the story, as well as an evaluation of some of the themes in "A Rose for Emily" and especially events

perfumes contain chemicals which are linked to hormone disruption, reproductive problems, and even cancer. Some products are even perfumed with

Olfaction And Brain Analysis
Olfaction is, by definition, the sense of smell. Olfaction and gustation, the sense of taste, are closely related and complement each other. Because
olfaction is controlled by the limbic system in the brain it can invoke feelings, memories, and other sensations. Although it is a primitive sense, and
one needed for survival, it is incredibly complex. For example, the brain analyzes over 300 odor molecules to identify the smell of a rose. When
humans smell things, there is a process in which the brain interprets the molecules in order to understand what is being sensed. First, vaporized odor
particles, or chemicals, reach the nostrils and dissolve in the mucus that lines each nostril and the olfactory hairs (cilia). Just the structure... Show more

There are 10,000 tastebuds on the surface of the tongue, cheeks, and soft palate that help humans take in stimuli about what they are eating. These
tastebuds are responsible for interpreting six different types of information on food: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and savory (umami). Sweet food is an
indication that the food is high in sugar and its derivatives fructose or lactose. Sour food is mostly acidic and includes things like lemon juice or
organic acids. This sensation is caused by hydrogen ions. Food containing table salt is perceived as salty, but presence of potassium or magnesium
can also cause a salty sensation. A bitter taste is a response from the body that the food being consumed is poisonous and dangerous to survival. Most
bitter tastes come from poisonous plant roots. Lastly, the savory taste, or "umami" taste, comes from amino acids such as glutamic acid or aspartic
acid. High amounts of glumatic acid can be found in cheese, ripe tomatoes, and meat. ("How Does Our Sense of Taste Work?",

Cosmetic Chemistry
Cosmetics are substances that are applied onto the body and/or face to enhance a person's looks or scent. Cosmetics can be make–up which is mostly
used by women and it is to enhance a female's appearance. It is normally applied to face, hair, and body.Cosmetics has been used throughout society
since Ancient times. In Ancient Egypt, cosmetic chemistry was being used before anyone knew it related to chemistry. Cosmetics was being used for
many reasons in Ancient times. It is said that Cleopatra bathed in donkey milk to keep skin smooth, this is an example to show that chemistry is
being used for the benefit of skin care. Skin care is another example of cosmetic chemistry being used. Skin care has been an important factor in
society. Skin care has been around since 3000 BC in Ancient Egypt. This was prepared by natural materials.
Eye make–up was one of the earliest forms of females enhancing their beauty with make–up. It was told that women in Ancient Egypt would put eye
makeup on to make their eyes look larger and to show more of the color of eye. The most used colors were black and dark green. The material used to
make this eye product was a rock, copper, galena, and a sulphide of lead. This is a chemistry compound.
Cosmetics has continued to be a big part of civilization throughout the years. The cosmetic business brings in about 200 billions of dollars each year

By Merilee Kern, MBA
Sweat understandably gets a bad rap. It can ruin our hair; our clothes; our furniture; our mood; our image at home, work and socially; our ability to
exercise, play music and handle gadgets; and far more. And while men tend to sweat more than women under normal circumstances, both genders are
equally impacted by hyperhidrosis–a serious medical condition causing people to sweat excessively (up to 4 or 5 times more than normal). In fact,
according to the International Hyperhidrosis Society–the scholars of sweat–nearly 367 million people of all ages struggle with hyperhidrosis on their
hands, feet, face, underarms, or body.
Those living with hyperhidrosis suffer from extreme, uncomfortable, embarrassing, and emotionally–devastating sweating. In fact, an infographic from
Dermira – an innovative biotech dedicated to developing treatments for chronic skin conditions – is rife with scary hyperhidrosis statistics and sheds
revealing light on this debilitating sweat–inducing condition.
Whether you sweat situationally at a normal level or have clinical hyperhidrosis, there's one shared weapon: antiperspirants. Love them or hate them,
pretty much all of us need–or could certainly benefit–from them. But buyer beware; all antiperspirants are not created equal. And some misnomers

The Age Of Enlightenment In Patrick Suskind's Historical...
Suskind uses literary historical details to narrate the story of a self–obsessed man, who commits horrendous crimes to achieve his objective. In the
narration, Suskind carefully crafts the historical importance of the Age of Enlightenment. That was an important period in European History because, the
age of Enlightenment encouraged Europeans to shift away from the religious based understanding of the universe. Suskind wrote "Perfume" when
rational thinking superseded the common perception about the religious side. My discussion on the literary historical details will primarily focus on
Suskind's portrayal of a self obsessed man in 18th century Paris with reference to the age of Enlightenment.

The spirit of human generosity repulsed him so much that he did not hesitate to enjoy killing women one after another. Grenouille's sensibility and
addiction in a way reconstructs a different perception about the age of Enlightenment. Grenouille's lack of scent is not just lack of a body odor, but also
the lack of morals, "because a reader can see that Grenouille is someone who has the physical characteristics of a man but without the substance
that fully establishes one as a human being. The sense of smell itself is always a way in which a person's soul is identified, without the ability to
smell or produce a body odor, one cannot detect the soul of a person." [3] A good sense of smell is relatable to human generosity, warmth and
passion, Suskind writes about Gaillard, "For good all sense of smell and every sense of human warmth and human coldness, indeed every human
passion. Without that one blow, tenderness had become as foreign to her has enmity. Joy as strange as despair". Thus, Grenouille's obsession for
producing the perfect smell can be interpreted not only a form of self gratification but also creating a soul for himself because when he kills his victims
he extracts their body odor, thus extracting their essence and rendering them soulless. In so doing, Grenouille in fact gruesomely acts against the very
principles of the age of Enlightenment, and thus an antithesis of the human spirit of warmth, sensibility and humanity at large. Grenouille shows a
conflicting personality because even though he lacks body odor, he feels that his inner most being is wonderful. While describing Grenouille, Suskind
writes, "He wanted to empty himself of his inner most being, of nothing less than his inner most being, which he considered more wonderful than
anything the world had to offer". This shows Grenouille really believed in the superiority of his intelligence and his inner

Deodorant plays an essential role in your daily routine, but while your deodorant may be keeping you dry and odor–free, it could also be increasing
your risks for serious health problems in the future. When you turn your store–bought deodorant container over, you'll most likely see a long list of

Why Aluminum?
Aluminum has been present in both deodorants and antiperspirant since the late 19th century. Whiledeodorant itself underwent various incarnations up
until the late 1970s, aluminum has remained a primary ingredient due to its unique abilities to interact with the skin and sweat glands. Alumium ions

research regarding this disease has progressed, less emphasis has been placed on tangles and more on brain plaque and genetic risk factors in regards
to disease development. However, aluminum in products like deodorant and in drinking water sources may still play a contributing role, even if it is

What I Learned At The Salvation Army
In life, we are called to serve others, not judge them for what they have done or will do in their life. This statement speaks volumes and does a
wonderful job of summarizing what I learned, not only about myself, but about myself as a future occupational therapist (OT) while completing my
Academic Service Learning (ASL) Project at the Salvation Army in Findlay, OH under the supervision of Major Angie Carter.
During my time at the Salvation Army, I learned that the Christian–based agency is focused on helping people who are struggling in life, typically
people of low socioeconomic status (SES). The Salvation Army in Findlay provides people, who come to the main Salvation Army office, either with
food boxes and/or vouchers for prescription drugs at participating drug stores and clothes at the Salvation Army Thrift Store or with guidance on
where the item they are in search of, could possibly be found in another Findlay community service based agency. One of the main services that the
Salvation Army took pride in was the adopting of families, affected by poverty, for Christmas. Representatives from these poverty families all over
Hancock County would fill out a Christmas application form in late October, in hopes that they would get "adopted out" by local businesses, schools,
and donors that would buy clothing and toys for members of the family. One of the volunteers that worked at the Salvation Army, named Linda,

The Effect Of Cologne On The Body
The Effects of Cologne Can the way a man smells actually affect his life? Can buying expensive cologne give him more confidence or make him
irresistible? Cologne advertisers would certainly seem to think so. In truth, scents can affect an individual in different ways. Certain scents can have
particular effects on the body, and they can actually alter the way a person behaves or perceives himself. Scents that work positively with a man's
body chemistry can actually change the way he acts or thinks. However, when cologne ads promise men that they will be handsome, successful,
powerful, and talented because of the scents they wear, the industry begins to sell them fantasy rather than reality. Advertisements for cologne are very
unique. Cologne ads usually portray a message that says "wearing this will make you attractive" or "you will be more powerful by wearing this
cologne." Most of these advertisements feature men, since men are their target audience. However, some other advertisements feature women, since
women sometimes buy cologne for men as a gift. Some advertisements, like this one, feature celebrities. Having a good–looking celebrity, such as
James Franco, draws in the attention of viewers. This advertisement does a great job of visual advertising. The dark, simple background of city lights
is intended to focus one's attention solely on the image and the text, while portraying a scene of mystery or perhaps adventure. This advertisement is

It is evident throughout many places in the book that Baldini's perfumery skill are quite poor and much of his success is based off of other people's
work. This is in complete contrast to Grenouille, whose love and talent for olfactory senses far exceeds Baldini's. This is evident when Grenouille
awakes from his sickness and states, "Tell me, maftre, are there other ways to extract the scent from things besides pressing or distilling?" – (104).
Baldini quickly responded and told Grenouille that there were three other ways in which he could extract scent, however these methods are only
present down the south of France. It is evident that Baldini and Grenouille share major differences when it comes to natural talent, as Baldini can no

horrific experience that Grenouille went through, with the disease known as small pox, led him in the search for his own personal identity as a

Additionally, it raises the question of where the metals are going once you roll (or spray) them on.
Research, including one study recently published in the Journal of Applied Toxicology, shows that aluminum is not only absorbed by your body, but it
is deposited in your breast tissue. It can even be found in nipple aspirate fluid, a fluid that reflects the microenvironment in your breast.
Researchers found that the level of aluminum in nipple aspirate fluid was significantly higher in women with breast cancer compared to healthy
women. These results suggest an indication for raised levels of aluminum as a biomarker for identification of women at higher risk of developing
breast cancer.
Though often added to non–organic deodorants and antiperspirant, aluminum is one of the worst metals you can put on your skin, and it may lead to
health issues when applied to the body.

cold–blooded murders just to collect for himself a perfect smell since he was born odorless. Through the pages of the novel, he perceives how... Show

His mother is decapitated after his birth for killing her four earlier babies. With his birth, the mother breathes her last. The unwanted orphan in a
world of odorful people is rejected because of lack of body odor as Father Terrier rightly expresses: "Impossible! It is absolutely impossible for an
infant to be possessed by the devil. An infant is not yet a human being; it is a pre–human being and does not yet possess a fully developed soul. Which
is why it is of no interest to the devil. Can he talk already, perhaps? Does some evil stench come from him?" (10). Starical is the thought that France
was a stench driven monster during the eighteenth century rejects a boy born with no body odor but is endured to have an incomparable power to
detect even the most diluted of smells in France.
Baptized by Monk Terrier in the name of a saint– John the Baptist who also was decapitated adds the irony element to the opening. He has to bear the
name in his mother's shame for the rest of his life. Almost all those who touch Grenouille's life end up in demise. Early childhood is laden loveless
and ridden with remorseless people. Madame Gaillard fosters him. She herself is devoid of smelling senses, brain damaged in her childhood and also
not able to shower any emotions on Grenouille. He is brought up under a cold but reasonably fair guidance of

The Criminal Responsibility Of The Mentally Ill
Punishment or Treatment :The Criminal Responsibility of the Mentally Ill The representation and discussion of mental disorders have drastically
increased during more modern times. Through the development of studies on psychiatric disorders and biological deficiencies, assessment and
treatment have slowly replaced the criminalization. Unfortunately for the protagonist of Perfume, an unfortunate individual born with both situations,
lacked all resources of treatment and sympathy, and was ridiculed and isolated from society. "The persuasive power of anodor cannot be fended off, it
enters into us like breath into our lungs, it fills us up, imbues us totally. There is no remedy for it." ― Patrick Suskind, Perfume: The Story of a
Murderer. Body odor is an unpreventable component of animals including humans and it is primarily resulted from skin glands or sweat gland
excretions. Body odor may give the impression of being absent on certain individuals because its intensity is affected by many circumstances such as
the environment or emotions. Studies proved that each individual secretes a scent that is distinctive and identifiable. Researchers also show that

Literature Review Of Literature : Introduction To Foot Odors
Review of Literature
Introduction to shoe odors In today's society foot odor has become a major problem for some people. The medical name is bromodosis, and it can
affect anyone. There are various conditions causing this problem as well as odor in a person's shoes. The main cause of smelly feet is sweat, but
there are also a lot of other factors and medical conditions that can lead to this smelly condition. These conditions can vary from diseases to stress.
There could also be conditions as minor as not drying your feet after a shower and wearing the same pair of shoes over and over again. There are
various ways to combat foot odor and shoe odor, ranging from home remedies to over the counter products.
II. Causes of foot odors Sweat is moisture exuded through the pores of the skin, typically in profuse quantities as a reaction to heat , physical
exertion, fever, or fear. According to podiatrist, Lorraine Jones, feet become smelly if sweat soaks into shoes and they don't dry before you wear
them again. Then the bacteria on the skin breaks down the sweat as it comes from the pores. A cheesy odor is released as the sweat decomposes
which causes the bad odor on your feet. Your feet hold more sweat glands than any other part of your body. Sweat glands are a small gland that
secretes sweat, situated in the dermis of the skin. Such glands are found over most of the body, and have a simple coiled tubular structure. The main
function of sweat glands is to keep your skin

Descriptive Essay : The Day Of My School
PLAYGROUND: BRING! BRING! BRING! The dynamic sound passed over my head. I immediately responded to it by covering my two fragile ears
with my two small hands. The ringing bell was ear–splitting, but I was happy that I was finally dismissed. As soon as I escaped from the school
building, I quickly approached a lovely playground. The playground was enormous and colorful. There were lots of slides, swings, and seesaws
everywhere. My most favorite out of all was the swing with black seat and two chains tied to it. When I reached to the swing I was exhilarated and
excited. I sat on it and prepared to utilize my legs to taste the sweet windy air. I stretched my legs as straight as I could and inclined my rest of my
body opposite direction. I pressured my legs to push the air and the swing has begun swinging. The sensations of flying and falling were great as I
expected. The wind which was created by my action was wonderful and even beautiful. The touch of the wind was smooth and fresh. The sound of
the windy air was euphonious and harmonious. I felt nothing but the positive senses. It was majestic and impressive. All I have to do was vacant
my brain and feel the wind. While I maintained forcing my legs to shove the air harder and roughly, it was possible for me to dispose of frustration
or anxiety. I was desperate to obtain a rope swing which can be tied to a tree branch in front of my house. I hoped that I could taste these glorious and
marvelous feelings every day. LIBRARY:

Descriptive Essay On The Log House
I was driving home from work and the road I normally take was closed, so I decided to take a different route. While darkness was approaching, I found
myself on a, unfamiliar, long, narrow road and certainly lost. I looked at my phone and I had no cell service and then I hit something with my car.
I pulled over and when I got out of my car I could see that I had hit a tree branch and it had punctured my tire. I started to look around and when I
looked to my left, my blood started to turn cold when I saw a deserted log house. I decided to walk towards the house feeling incapable to walk. I could
smell this really bad body odor coming from the house. As I approached the house I saw a wide open gate and I was feeling a bit audacious, to walk
through it. The odor started getting stronger and stronger so much so, it was to the point where I felt like my nose was going to fall off. My
curiosity was getting the best of me and I was intrigued to find out what the horrific smell could be. As I walked through the gate and felt my heart
skipped a beat, and my blood went from warm to cold in an instant, I was paralysed. The impulsive smell, was the rotting flesh of dead bodies. I walked
backwards out of the gate and ran to the front of the house only to find that there was a missing row of logs and dead bodies lying in their place. I
walk back to the back of the house warily, vary wary. I walk passed the gate more than I did before and see a tire, I run up to it feeling relieved, to only
find out it has been popped. A cold sweat ran down my face when I realized I had to go into the house. The weathered door creaked ominously on its
rusty hinges as it slowly opened.
When I went into the house I felt a sense of concealment. I could smell the rotting wood and flesh that was unbearable. IВґm in the house and I take
out my phone, and I feel relieved when I see I have cell service. Then something hits my phone to the ground and breaks my phone. After a while,
my heart was pounding like a jackhammer something broke my phone. I decide to go upstairs, and on my way out of the corner of my eye I see a
black face just staring at me. My blood went to ice, my heart stopped working, my hair raised, and my spine chilled. He got up from

Does Suskind Portray Grenouille as a Monster in Perfume Essay
There are many different types of monsters that this world has seen, including mythical creatures and mythic humanoids. Their main goal is to either
protect or kill which is all done for a reasonable reason, but there is one monster that has murdered innocent people, with the purpose of creating
specific scents. In the novel Perfume by Patrick Suskind, the author portrays Grenouille as a monster. Suskind has this character that willingly murders
several people for their scent, no matter their age, size, or maturity. He is a monster because he misuses the power of scent to escape worldly problems
and attract love. Grenouille has a hatred of humanity that not only affected young girls but the rest of the characters including his... Show more content

Looking at how all babies cry at the time of birth does make this point unlawful but it was the timing that Grenouille had started to cry that makes
him a true monster. He cried out loud as soon as his mother had left, tossing the knife on the ground, which alerted the village that something was
going on. Most caretakers usually take a liking to the one they care for; however Suskind chose not to display that loving relationship. In the
quote," They put her in a ward populated with hundreds [...] of total strangers, pressing body upon body with five other women, and for three long
weeks let her die in public view"(Suskind Part I, 5), Suskind furthers the concept of black humor. Every character that Grenouille had a relationship
with died. In this case it was Madame Gaillard who had put Grenouille to hard work feeling no affection towards him. She became tired with him as
he sucked the life out of her and gave him to Grimal, and eventually suffered from this choice. Madame Gaillard had gotten cancer that slowly killed
her. This affected Grimal later when he sold Grenouille to another person. Grimal's life was taken the night Grenouille was sold. Grenouille is a
monster in Perfume because of all the adolescent women he murdered, the death of his mother and for his caretakers dying after they left him.
Grenouille had a strong sense of smell, which no other being capable of; however misused this gift.

Perfume: The Story Of A Murderer
The Enigma of Scents
In Patrick SГјskind's Perfume: The Story of a Murderer written in German in 1985, SГјskind explores Grenouille's ignorance through the rejection of
his true inner–self. SГјskind does this to reveal the effects of the natural and artificial scents that impacts knowledge. SГјskind accomplishes
Grenouille's rejection of his true inner–self through the rejection of the natural scents and through the acceptance of the artificial scents. Throughout the
novel, SГјskind symbolizes scent as the ability or inability to gain knowledge through Grenouille's application of the natural and artificial scents of
perfume. Although the scents help Grenouille to assimilate into society, he does not have the ability to gain anything from society... Show more content

Perfume hides the body odor that emits from the human body, just as science withholds important information from society to protect the minds of the
citizens because science sometimes contains information that may be too much to handle. When science claims a discovery, it sometimes ends up
being ridiculous. SГјskind mentions several philosophes, however, one philosophe in particular, Marquis De Sade, closely relates to Grenouille in the
sense of living a life unbound by religion or law. SГјskind shows the absurdity of science when Talliade–Espinasse claims that the Earth's
poisonousness gas makes men die and that a bull's semen can produce a milk animal–vegetable hybrid. Since society learns from science, they believe
every theory that presents itself to them. SГјskind's method for revealing deception intertwines with irony and satire. He accomplishes this by creating
confusion within society, like the citizens of Grasse look for the murderer, when the readers already know who the murderer is. Grenouille's odors
confuse the citizens because his odors deceive their perceptions. However, science tries to increase the amount of knowledge available, whereas
Grenouille manipulates perfume to acquire whichever items necessary. "His odor of innocence touched" the heart's of others making them to believe
that his character consists of loyalty and good behavior, but underneath the odor that emits innocence, lies deception (183). "Another perfume in his
[Grenouille's] arsenal was a scent for arousing sympathy that proved effective" to deceive others to provide him with the items necessary to extract the
odor of the girls, which remains to be the essential ingredient for his artificial scent (183). As science continues to progress throughout the novel,
Grenouille's ability to extract scent increases. Though in the end, science is deceptive, the people still gain knowledge, whereas perfume, which is also

A Short Story : The Story Of The City?
I felt my heart hammer and my legs weak. That tiny dot, the city, from the start of the day had made me the tiny specimen instead as I stood under its
giant wall. A girl can't help but feel nervous as she entered a new chapter in her life.
It was evening and my treacherous long journey across the jagged rocks and down the steep mountains had led me finally to the city's gates. It was
beautiful, it was everything I hoped for as I took in the firm yet glimmering poles that stood side by side to form the impressive fence that separated
China's main city from the countryside. It was like a forbidden land that allowed no one to trespass into its territory, having two guards to ensure that
this happened. The guards looked firm and stoic as they presented themselves in front of the gate that gave entrance to new lands.
"Pardon me," I vocalised. "I have applied to reside here, may I pass in?"
The two guards gave me doubtful and apprehensive glances. I flashed my documents in response and with firm hands, they snatched my documents of
civilian rights. They grunted once they were satisfied with my permit and begrudgingly opened the gates. I could hear the clanging of the chains; the
signal to a new world opening up to me.
A gut wrenching feeling washed me as I caught the quick glances of the guards. A flash of pity and remorse. Strange I thought as I walked into the gates.
"It's ..." I stammered. "It's ...oh! My merciful mother?"
There before me was a city not of my dreams but a city of every person's nightmare. There in this secluded fortress were not civilised citizens but
primitive living organisms. The scene of a perfect capital enriched with refined inhabitants had been shattered. Instead, reality crashed onto me; dead
corpses laid along the streets, little children malnourished, women cries for help echoed across the city and worst of all the guards who were to
protect its people stood by and watched with delight.
"What a sadistic society––"
My soft whisper was interrupted by a rude hand and catalysed a gasp from me. It was from a random much older man with a repulsive smirk on his
face. His head shone from the sunlight due to his untamed and greasy hair. His body odour hit my nose with repugnancy and made

Descriptive Essay About Dance
I carry my personality in a dance bag. My stinky dance shoes and sweaty gym clothing hide wet and wrinkled at the bottom of a neon orange
backpack. The soaked clothing wraps its long sleeves around a heavily used cucumber–scented deodorant and a bottle of perfume in an attempt to mask
the vile smells of sweat and hardwork. I always pack one article of black clothing, either a skirt, a dress, or a leotard; yet in my mind I know that
"people who wear black lead colorful lives" reminding me that there is more to me than the black dress I wear to practice. I shuffle my heavy feet.
Each day, my toes become even more blistered and sore than the previous day. Three inch heels for at least three hours a day are not easy to dance
on. After every practice, I peel off the black dress, like my skin. I could wring out the condensation if I really wanted to. My messy hair turns as wet
as if I took a shower, drenched in sweat. I carry pressure to become the best dancer I can be, among thousands of successful teenagers just like me
around the world. The longing–the burning ache to become the world champion, a desire that seems too far away to attain. The hunger for a new
dance partner weighs more than my familiar backpack, filled to the brim with grades that seem to determine my entire being and future. I yearn for a
partner who will treat me with respect, craving to work as hard as me to make it in the dance world. A partner who is willing to put in the work. I am

NATURAL DEODORANTS AND ANTIPERSPIRANTS
ANITHA LALI MATHEW, LAKSHMI SAJI, LIDA ELIZA JOSEPH, JIJU VIJAYAN, ELSSEY ABRAHAM
NAZARETH COLEGE OF PHARMACY, OTHERA, THIRUVALLA
ABSTRACT
Most conventional deodorants and antiperspirants contain several ingredients linked to serious health effects, from Alzheimer's disease to virulent
cancers. Since deodorants and antiperspirants are designed to stay on our bodies for hours, this allows the potential for more harmful chemicals to be
absorbed through the skin.
While natural options are available, many people complain about the inadequacy of natural deodorants to adequately mask body odor. There is now an
abundance of alternative options–many improved upon since their initial introduction several years ago–that may inspire us to think again about
incorporating natural deodorants into our body care regime. This article attempts to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The antiperspirant label may list aluminum as:
aluminum chlorohydrate
ammonium aluminum sulfate
potassium aluminum sulfate
aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex gly
Aside from aluminum, most antiperspirants also contain parabens, antimicrobial agents derived from toluene–a toxic petrochemical derivative. Some
evidence suggests that repeated exposure to toluene may contribute to hormone disruption.
Thirteen research studies performed since 2000 have shown that various types of parabens act like estrogen in living tissue. Estrogen is known to drive
the growth of cancerous cells.
Some people with sensitive skin have an allergic reaction to parabens, which results in a skin condition known as contact dermatitis.
Antiperspirants also have harsh astringent salts containing metals that can cause granulomas (small, itchy bumps) on underarm skin.
Deodorants work by:

The City Of A Mid Size City
The crosswalk in this city is typical of a mid–size city. Small businesses line the busy street, and with people eager to get to their destination, a
combination of sights, sounds and smells unites to form this crosswalk.
This city's intersection is lively with the commonplace sights of businesses, people and vehicles. On a sunny and breezy afternoon, three Eastern and
Western based businesses, on the far left, line up one after another vying for attention from potential patrons. In the middle, the sidewalk is filled with
an array of people. At the forefront of the sidewalk there are three people that are on the edge of the crosswalk. To the left, a medium build,
middle–aged white female with long black hair is about to cross the crosswalk. She is wearing black shoes, a black dress and a white short–sleeved
blouse. Some people would refer to this as business casual. Around her neck is a lanyard that appears to be carrying an identification badge. She is
holding a rolled–up, brown lunch bag in her left hand. While on her cell phone, she walks forward and looks downward as to shield her eyes.
During her walk, her hair is grazed by the wind. In the middle of the sidewalk, a thin, elderly white man with a gray beard man is the focal point of
the picture. He is wearing a brown fedora, thin–framed eyeglasses along with a brown coat, gray pants and black dress shoes. His eyes are gazing
forward as if he just locked eyes with someone from afar. Coincidentally, his body

Purdue Is A School That Is Cold Most Of The Academic Year
Purdue is a school that is cold most of the academic year. There is a little while in the fall when students first arrive that is warm, and then it gets
really cold. This encourages students to stop wearing deodorant because they think that they can get away with it and for the most part they do get
away with it. Then at the end of the academic year the season turns to spring and it starts to get warmer outside. This means that people start to get
sweat and smell more. The problem is that these students are now trained to not wear deodorant. This is troubling because body odor is disgusting. We
thought that it would be a good idea to remind these students, whether they are lifting or even just going to class, to put on deodorant. It will save
the that student from being bothered about it and the other students from having to smell it. We went about the research and production in a few
steps. First we made a power point video and then we did a voice over on the video. The video was made from slides of words and pictures that we
found on the internet. We also found data on the subject. One fact that the Daily Mail found out was that one in five men admitted to never using
deodorant or any other kind of body spray (Tozer, 2011). We also found out throughthe Huffington Post that deodorant has antibacterial that stops the
stink of body odor before it happens while antiperspirants deal with sweat directly (Klein, 2013). The final fact we found that was interesting is

Raskolikov's Theory In Crime And Punishment
Dostoevsky's novel Crime and Punishment analyzes a provocative theory constructed by the main character, Raskolnikov. His theory divides
ordinary and extraordinary people. According to Raskolnikov, ordinary people have no opinion of their own, being just mere followers, while
extraordinary people craft new opinions for the society. Extraordinary people are prone to greatness, being therefore justified to act in any way in
order to achieve it, even if it means to kill or steal. An interesting example Raskolnikov makes is:
"the lawgivers and founders of mankind, starting from the most ancient and going on to the Lycurguses, the Solons, the Muhammads, the Napoleons,
and so forth, all of them to a man were criminals, from the fact alone that in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This theory can also be applied to Patrick SUskind's novel Perfume, more precisely to the main character, Grenouille. Ironically, if Raskolnikov was not
able to live up to his own theory and prove to be an extraordinary individual, Grenouille becomes one without realizing it. I will further on expand my
argument by investigating Grenouille's motive, technique of conducting the killings and his relation to guilt.
Grenouille's unique gift allows him to understand the world in a way that no one else can. He never forgets a scent by labeling them in his palace of odor
and by constantly combining them in the most beautiful ways. Moreover, he knows that attraction is based on scent "... this scent will be ripened and
take on a gravity that no one, man or woman, will be able to escape. People will be overwhelmed, disarmed, helpless before the magic of this girl, and
they will not know why" (Suskind 171).
Grenouille's motive of committing all those crimes is concentrated around a superior idea, a great one: creating the most extraordinary perfume in the
world, a perfume that will allow him to rule mankind by combining the scents of the most exquisite

Finding Rhetoric in Our Lives
The commercial of my choice was the Old Spice ad that is advertising their new line of body wash that is advertised having "odor block" power.
The commercial is made by old spice and has a lot of ethos, pathos, and logos throughout the commercial, and is very effective at all three. I think that
the commercial works and gets straight to the point in a very short time. Its main goal is to sell and make money off their product that is said to keep
you smelling god and stopping odor from coming off you. They use a very famous actor, Terry Crews, to tell you that the product works and he even

It demonstrates how he washes his body and it takes immediate effects in stopping the odor. Another instance of the commercial using ethos is
how often the ad and all the diversity in each one being played everywhere on everything, which shows that they have a good feeling that people
will see this and purchase the product from them as soon as possible. The brand of Old Spice already does have a good reputation and is one of the
leading brands in men's health and cleanliness behind Axe brand. So it doesn't need as many appeals to ethos because they already have good
credibility and most people know the name and will trust them. The uses of pathos is how he seems to be screaming at the audience which may seem
to intimidate them into buying the old spice body wash. He seems over excited and is very big which may make you feel like if you don't buy it then
he'll do something about it. There are a lot of different emotional appeals through this commercial that will affect many people in different emotional
states while hearing the commercial. It is very effective and is the most predominately used rhetoric device used in the commercial. Another emotional
response you feel would be happiness because the commercial is overall a comedic ad that wants to make you feel happy and make you feel like you
can trust them and their product. They portray this by having him express his opinions on odor and why you

Commercial Analysis: The Vietnam War
The commercial begins with a charade of cars heading to a hotel in a Middle Eastern country. A commander steps down from the vehicle and walks
inside the hotel surrounded with body guards holding a brief case handcuffed to his wrist. At the same time a visual of helicopters are flying in the
air on top of a field, two soldiers inside the helicopters look at themselves as if they are in extreme pressure, scared and ready for war. A military
war tank is seen driving around the city where you can witness abandoned, destroyed buildings by the war. A figure of a man hidden in the building
hides as the tank passes by. Then, China is seen on the screen with thousands of uniformed soldiers and the president and the first lady of China are

It is the most thrilling, emotional, clearly visualized TV commercial I have seen. It illustrates the rhetorical triangle elements such as pathos, ethos and

extreme pressure. The woman are strong in its own way, but show the kindness, the love, and the influence on a powerful man. The logo is only
showed at the end with the AXE spray being sprayed on the man. In my opinion the AXE deodorant spray makes them feel powerful, controlled under
extreme situations. A man that is willing to show his love for those he cares for even if they seem dangerous and intimidating. It brings in them a true
sense or power, responsibility and self–control. I really liked this commercial. Thumbs

Bartlett: A Short Story
Bartlett became aware of a noise. It sounded like an echo through a long metal tunnel, a thunderous boom. It was loud and sudden, jolting her awake,
but not quite. It seemed more like having an awareness without thought. Her heart began to pound, the beats breaking through, pulsing in her ears.
Fear. Confusion. She remembered years ago, as a child, going exploring with her friends in the woods near her house. Not far from the main path was
a long dried out log. The peeling bark had a musty odor of earth and rotting vegetation. Her friends had dared her to enter the center of the log and
crawl within the darkness. Not wishing to seem scared or girly, she crouched down and inched her way into the opening, her arms in front of her,
pulling her forward. Sounds muted, and darkness encircled her as she moved her body into the log's interior. Unidentifiable wisps of cobwebs and
debris brushed against her arms and face. It was raining that day, a slow and steady rain, making everything damp and slippery. These images began
to permeate her conscious. She could almost smell the dank odor of moss and wet leaves. Images and sounds randomly pinged and ... Show more

The Importance of Hygiene in Perfume: Patrick Süskind’s...
In eighteenth–century France, the standard of hygiene was at an all–time low. In Patrick SГјskind's novel, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, hygiene
plays a key role in developing character behavior. SГјskind portrays a setting of poor hygiene in order to conceal character motives. This is evident
through several main characters and several other minor characters such as Grenouille's mother, Father Terrier, Grenouille, Grimal and
Taillade–Espinasse. Understanding how SГјskind manipulates hygiene to disguise character aims enables the reader to have a better knowledge of the
human values and morals of the time period. Initially, the odor and conditions near Grenouille's birthplace desensitize his mother's cruelty. First,
SГјskind sets the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
SГјskind affirms Father Terrier's disgust of Grenouille with, "Terrier shuddered. He felt sick to his stomach. He pulled back his own nose as if he

hygiene (17). SГјskind masks the similarity of Father Terrier and Grenouille with Father Terrier's exaggerated disgust of Grenouille. Father Terrier
employs the excuse of Grenouille's lack of typical poor hygiene to validate giving him away and thus SГјskind uses hygiene, or a lack of, to conceal
Father Terrier's true goals. Furthermore, SГјskind exaggerates Grenouille's sensitivity to the smell of other characters and settings to distract from
Grenouille's desire for acceptance by society. The elaborate descriptions of malodorous fragrances that Grenouille experiences isolate him from the
rest of society and create a void in which Grenouille needs to fill with normalcy and approval. SГјskind first distinguishes Grenouille's sense of smell
from an average person's, "He gathered tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of specific smells and kept them so clearly, so randomly at his
disposal, that he could not only recall them when he smelled them again, but could also actually smell them simply upon recollection", and then
progresses to Grenouille's pleasure of

Smell Disorders
Trailer "Stop and smell the roses" is a famous idiomatic reference many make when they want to convey the importance of appreciating the beauty of
life. But have any of us imagined what it may be like to NOT smell the roses or anything for that matter? Humans often take their sense of smell for
granted, as they rely more heavily on sight and sound in day–to–day activities. Yet smell–in my opinion– can be such an important aspect of life as the
brain has the capability to associate smells with danger and it can even elicit memories. For example, the odor of smoke notifies us that something
dangerous could be happening, or walking into a bakery with the smell of fresh chocolate chip cookies can cause pleasure, bringing back childhood
memories ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"The most common causes include head injury (common in young adults) and viral infections or Alzheimer disease in older adults" ("Loss of
Smell–Ear,Nose, and Throat Disorders"). Head injuries may result in anosmia due to "damage or destruction to the fibers of the olfactory nerves
where they pass through the roof of the nasal cavity. Sometimes injuries may also cause a fracture to the cribriform plate" ("Loss of Smell–Ear,Nose,
and Throat Disorders"). Infections and tumors near the cribriform plate also can damage the olfactory nerve. Some less common causes of anosmia
include the overuse of antibiotics ,which may kill off all the olfactory neurons at once. If the cause is due to sinus infections or irritation, doctors may
suggest a treatment of steam inhalation, nasal sprays, antibiotics, and occasionally surgery. If a tumor near the cribriform is causing the individual to
lack olfactory abilities, then surgical removal and radiation is typically the course of treatment. However, in causes where anosmia resulted from head
trauma or undiagnosed causes there are no current treatment options.

  • 2. The Shift Of Perfume Analysis of the shifts of Grenouille in Patrick SГјskind's Perfume In Perfume, Patrick SГјskind writes about the life of an extraordinary boy named Grenouille in 18th–century France. The author presents the shifts of existential thinking of his main character throughout the book. The main purpose of living for Grenouille mirrors that of every other human being – to discover the world, with his exception of seeking only the scenting part of it. The series of events in the boy's life develop his character and the various goals he strives for: survival, odor education, perfume making, peace, own smell, smell extraction, and to die. Grenouille's birth is the start of his first ordeal. In order to survive, his first, primal instinct tells him to make a cry, not for sympathy and love, but cry for a life. Suskind uses a contrast to show how the neatly born baby brings "himself to people's attention and his mother to the gallow" (21). The miserable birth or the option of a "modest exit" do not affected the nearly mature decision of Grenouille to grab the opportunity of existing, "sparing the world a great deal of mischief" (21). His tenacious character is shown from his ability to take all of the power of his nurturer. He ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was an unpleasant nightmare that rouses Grenouille from his 7–year phantasy. Suskind uses imagery to illustrate the image of his bad dream: "Grenouille was completely wrapped in fog, saturated with fog" (133). The most dreadful part of the mysterious fog was its odor, it was the same as Grenouille's –– scentless. Drowning in his non–existing smell, the dreamer wakes up with a new dedication –– to find his own smell. The book climax ends with the unsuccessful attempts of the unfortunate to seek for answers to this mystery. The "greatest nose" in Paris which can sense any smell is ironized to not have any odor ... • 3. How Does Starvation Affect Larval Behavior Starvation impacts larval behavior as measured in the two–choice assay a)3rd instar larvae: From previous studies of our lab (Newquist, Novenschi et al. 2016) we learnt that each larval ORN is functionally diverse and each ORN differentially contributes to olfactory behavior in the Drosophila melanogaster larvae. Based on these results, we postulated that individual ORNs might be differentially modulated under starved state conditions. To begin to address this question we started with a panel of seven different odorants from the panel of 19 different odorants published in the study by (Mathew, Martelli et al. 2013). Each of the seven odorants elicits a strong, specific physiological response from a single ORN (Or 47a ::... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Larvae on each half are counted, RI is calculated using simple equation RI =(S–C)/(S+C) [S denotes number of larvae on the odorant/test side and C denotes number of larvae towards the control side]. The data from this experiment is presented in Figure 1. When tested for odorant acetal, starved larvae showed higher RI when compared to non–starved larvae. In other words, starved larvae have a stronger attractive response towards acetal compared to the non–starved larvae. Next, we looked at the olfactory responses of the remaining six odorants from the panel of seven that were mentioned above. As mentioned in the previous paragraph, starved and non–starved larvae were subjected to the two–choice assay after 2 hours of the starvation protocol. Data collected for all seven different odorants are shown in Figure 2. Of all the seven odorants tested, only three odorants showed significant changes in response indices upon starvation. Acetal (shown in Figure 1), 4, 5–dimethylthiazole, and pentyl acetate were the three odorants that showed higher RI values for starved state larvae when compared to non–starved larvae. In other words, for these three odorants starved larvae had higher attractiveness towards odorants compared to non–starved larvae. This supported our hypothesis that individual ORNs might be differentially modulated by the animal's starved state. b)2nd instar larvae: Next, we looked at the olfactory behavior response of 2nd ... • 4. What is Olfaction? Olfaction And Pheromones What is Olfaction? Olfaction is another word or a synonym used for the ability to smell or smell that anything carries with itself. It is by far one of the oldest senses that human and animals have carried likewise for ages. It allows organisms to identify food, as well allows them to copulate and evade the threat and danger posed by other predators besides providing sensual as well as warnings of danger pleasure. For both humans and animals, it is one of the important means by which our environment communicates with us and they communicate with it vice versa. So in other words it is the means via which one is able to interact with whatever is around us. In light of what has been mentioned in this very brief paragraph imagine what it would be like if there was no sense of olfaction? What are odors (examples)? The odor of flowers and perfume, smell of danger like smell of something burning, intoxicants, smell of food and spiciness, smell of something being stale or dead and even smell of someone that you know as being around you through their body scent and perfumes. Animals often mark their territories by smell and young animals are able to trace their mothers through the same sense of smell while they are unable to see. • 6. Speech On Healthy Summer Vacation A healthy summer vacation exercise! Dr. Halit Yerebakan It is summer time, and most of you are on or will go to summer vacations. It is not surprising that when summer vacations are pronounced aloud, they are mostly about going to coastal cities. Well when going on a seaside vacation, there are several warnings you should keep in mind and be cautious about them. You basically should have guessed by now about what I will talk about today, swimming in the pools or the sea, sun bathing, playing under the sun, eating at hotels, and basically all uncontrolled parts of your vacation. There is no doubt that a noble steed of summer sports is swimming. No worries, its not bad at all actually it is more special than you think! In the sweltering heat, ... The density of chemical odor is one of the odors that should not be felt in a pool. There wouldn't be a chemical smell where there is enough circulation. If the degree of chemical smells that disturbs you in the pool, it means that there is a circulation problem. Although it differs by your region, this is generally between 10'o clock in the morning to fourteen hours in the afternoon. These are accepted to be the dangerous hour for sun exposure, since skin damaging ultraviolet radiation from the sun comes right at you, even on cloudy days. You should also wear protective clothing against the sun. I know, everyone would love get a tan! Note that you can get your tan in the afternoon, instead of cooking yourself under the sun. Protective wear is just like what you generally wear, but only they should be extra light so that you wont sweat a lot and loose water! And of course you should use sunscreen. When it is summer, every specialist talks about health options in sunscreens so I don't want to give redundant information about them. But I have heard lately that some people claim that sunscreen use encourages excessive sun exposure and, as a result, increases the risk of skin cancer! Well there is no strong literature advocating this claim. But we do advice the use of sunscreens because research has shown that use of sunscreen can reduce the risk of malign melanoma, the most serious type of skin

  • 9. A Rose For Emily By William Faulkner Miss Emily Grierson, the main character in the strange short story "A Rose for Emily" written by William Faulkner. It would be best to examine her in a mental capacity as well as the circumstances that may affect her. Throughout the story, Miss Emily's unpredictable and eccentric behavior becomes unusual, and the reader, like the townspeople in the story, is left to speculate how Miss Emily has spent years living and sleeping with the body of Homer Barron. An important quote from the story was that the townspeople "did not say she was crazy" at first (Faulkner 159), and even so, she was never diagnosed nor received treatment by a psychiatric professional. The reader can go back through the history and point out occasions in which Miss Emily's mentality and actions suggested the probability of a mental illness. This knowledge can support the claim that Miss Emily suffered from schizophrenia as defined by the American Psychiatric Association's DSM–IV criteria (American Psychiatric Association 159). It is realistic to suggest that Miss Emily developed this mental illness as a response to the challenging conditions as a Southern woman from a high–class family. When attempting to diagnose a mental illness, one of the important factors that a doctor examines is the patient's prior history. In the situation of Miss Emily, an evaluation of the setting and other characters in the story, as well as an evaluation of some of the themes in "A Rose for Emily" and especially events ... • 11. Olfaction And Brain Analysis Olfaction is, by definition, the sense of smell. Olfaction and gustation, the sense of taste, are closely related and complement each other. Because olfaction is controlled by the limbic system in the brain it can invoke feelings, memories, and other sensations. Although it is a primitive sense, and one needed for survival, it is incredibly complex. For example, the brain analyzes over 300 odor molecules to identify the smell of a rose. When humans smell things, there is a process in which the brain interprets the molecules in order to understand what is being sensed. First, vaporized odor particles, or chemicals, reach the nostrils and dissolve in the mucus that lines each nostril and the olfactory hairs (cilia). Just the structure... Sweet food is an indication that the food is high in sugar and its derivatives fructose or lactose. Sour food is mostly acidic and includes things like lemon juice or organic acids. This sensation is caused by hydrogen ions. Food containing table salt is perceived as salty, but presence of potassium or magnesium can also cause a salty sensation. A bitter taste is a response from the body that the food being consumed is poisonous and dangerous to survival. Most bitter tastes come from poisonous plant roots. Lastly, the savory taste, or "umami" taste, comes from amino acids such as glutamic acid or aspartic acid. High amounts of glumatic acid can be found in cheese, ripe tomatoes, and meat. It can ruin our hair; our clothes; our furniture; our mood; our image at home, work and socially; our ability to exercise, play music and handle gadgets; and far more. And while men tend to sweat more than women under normal circumstances, both genders are equally impacted by hyperhidrosis–a serious medical condition causing people to sweat excessively (up to 4 or 5 times more than normal). In fact, according to the International Hyperhidrosis Society–the scholars of sweat–nearly 367 million people of all ages struggle with hyperhidrosis on their hands, feet, face, underarms, or body. Those living with hyperhidrosis suffer from extreme, uncomfortable, embarrassing, and emotionally–devastating sweating. In fact, an infographic from Dermira – an innovative biotech dedicated to developing treatments for chronic skin conditions – is rife with scary hyperhidrosis statistics and sheds revealing light on this debilitating sweat–inducing condition. Suskind uses literary historical details to narrate the story of a self–obsessed man, who commits horrendous crimes to achieve his objective. In the narration, Suskind carefully crafts the historical importance of the Age of Enlightenment. That was an important period in European History because, the age of Enlightenment encouraged Europeans to shift away from the religious based understanding of the universe. Suskind wrote "Perfume" when rational thinking superseded the common perception about the religious side. My discussion on the literary historical details will primarily focus on Suskind's portrayal of a self obsessed man in 18th century Paris with reference to the age of Enlightenment. The spirit of human generosity repulsed him so much that he did not hesitate to enjoy killing women one after another. Grenouille's sensibility and addiction in a way reconstructs a different perception about the age of Enlightenment. Grenouille's lack of scent is not just lack of a body odor, but also the lack of morals, "because a reader can see that Grenouille is someone who has the physical characteristics of a man but without the substance that fully establishes one as a human being. The sense of smell itself is always a way in which a person's soul is identified, without the ability to smell or produce a body odor, one cannot detect the soul of a person." [3] A good sense of smell is relatable to human generosity, warmth and passion, Suskind writes about Gaillard, "For good all sense of smell and every sense of human warmth and human coldness, indeed every human passion. Without that one blow, tenderness had become as foreign to her has enmity. Joy as strange as despair". Thus, Grenouille's obsession for producing the perfect smell can be interpreted not only a form of self gratification but also creating a soul for himself because when he kills his victims he extracts their body odor, thus extracting their essence and rendering them soulless. In so doing, Grenouille in fact gruesomely acts against the very principles of the age of Enlightenment, and thus an antithesis of the human spirit of warmth, sensibility and humanity at large. Grenouille shows a conflicting personality because even though he lacks body odor, he feels that his inner most being is wonderful. While describing Grenouille, Suskind writes, "He wanted to empty himself of his inner most being, of nothing less than his inner most being, which he considered more wonderful than anything the world had to offer". • 17. The Effect Of Cologne On The Body The Effects of Cologne Can the way a man smells actually affect his life? Can buying expensive cologne give him more confidence or make him irresistible? Cologne advertisers would certainly seem to think so. In truth, scents can affect an individual in different ways. Certain scents can have particular effects on the body, and they can actually alter the way a person behaves or perceives himself. Scents that work positively with a man's body chemistry can actually change the way he acts or thinks. However, when cologne ads promise men that they will be handsome, successful, powerful, and talented because of the scents they wear, the industry begins to sell them fantasy rather than reality. Advertisements for cologne are very unique. Cologne ads usually portray a message that says "wearing this will make you attractive" or "you will be more powerful by wearing this cologne." This is evident when Grenouille awakes from his sickness and states, "Tell me, maftre, are there other ways to extract the scent from things besides pressing or distilling?" – (104). When science claims a discovery, it sometimes ends up being ridiculous. SГјskind mentions several philosophes, however, one philosophe in particular, Marquis De Sade, closely relates to Grenouille in the sense of living a life unbound by religion or law. SГјskind shows the absurdity of science when Talliade–Espinasse claims that the Earth's poisonousness gas makes men die and that a bull's semen can produce a milk animal–vegetable hybrid. Since society learns from science, they believe every theory that presents itself to them. SГјskind's method for revealing deception intertwines with irony and satire. He accomplishes this by creating confusion within society, like the citizens of Grasse look for the murderer, when the readers already know who the murderer is. Grenouille's odors confuse the citizens because his odors deceive their perceptions. However, science tries to increase the amount of knowledge available, whereas Grenouille manipulates perfume to acquire whichever items necessary. "His odor of innocence touched" the heart's of others making them to believe that his character consists of loyalty and good behavior, but underneath the odor that emits innocence, lies deception (183). "Another perfume in his [Grenouille's] arsenal was a scent for arousing sympathy that proved effective" to deceive others to provide him with the items necessary to extract the odor of the girls, which remains to be the essential ingredient for his artificial scent (183). As science continues to progress throughout the novel, Grenouille's ability to extract scent increases. • 30. A Short Story : The Story Of The City? I felt my heart hammer and my legs weak. That tiny dot, the city, from the start of the day had made me the tiny specimen instead as I stood under its giant wall. A girl can't help but feel nervous as she entered a new chapter in her life. It was evening and my treacherous long journey across the jagged rocks and down the steep mountains had led me finally to the city's gates. It was beautiful, it was everything I hoped for as I took in the firm yet glimmering poles that stood side by side to form the impressive fence that separated China's main city from the countryside. It was like a forbidden land that allowed no one to trespass into its territory, having two guards to ensure that this happened. The guards looked firm and stoic as they presented themselves in front of the gate that gave entrance to new lands. "Pardon me," I vocalised. "I have applied to reside here, may I pass in?" The two guards gave me doubtful and apprehensive glances. I flashed my documents in response and with firm hands, they snatched my documents of civilian rights. They grunted once they were satisfied with my permit and begrudgingly opened the gates. I could hear the clanging of the chains; the signal to a new world opening up to me. A gut wrenching feeling washed me as I caught the quick glances of the guards. A flash of pity and remorse. Strange I thought as I walked into the gates. "It's ..." I stammered. "It's ...oh! My merciful mother?" There before me was a city not of my dreams but a city of every person's nightmare. There in this secluded fortress were not civilised citizens but primitive living organisms. The scene of a perfect capital enriched with refined inhabitants had been shattered. Instead, reality crashed onto me; dead corpses laid along the streets, little children malnourished, women cries for help echoed across the city and worst of all the guards who were to protect its people stood by and watched with delight. "What a sadistic society––" My soft whisper was interrupted by a rude hand and catalysed a gasp from me. It was from a random much older man with a repulsive smirk on his face. His head shone from the sunlight due to his untamed and greasy hair. His body odour hit my nose with repugnancy and made

  • 32. Descriptive Essay About Dance I carry my personality in a dance bag. My stinky dance shoes and sweaty gym clothing hide wet and wrinkled at the bottom of a neon orange backpack. The soaked clothing wraps its long sleeves around a heavily used cucumber–scented deodorant and a bottle of perfume in an attempt to mask the vile smells of sweat and hardwork. I always pack one article of black clothing, either a skirt, a dress, or a leotard; yet in my mind I know that "people who wear black lead colorful lives" reminding me that there is more to me than the black dress I wear to practice. I shuffle my heavy feet. Each day, my toes become even more blistered and sore than the previous day. Three inch heels for at least three hours a day are not easy to dance on. After every practice, I peel off the black dress, like my skin. I could wring out the condensation if I really wanted to. My messy hair turns as wet as if I took a shower, drenched in sweat. I carry pressure to become the best dancer I can be, among thousands of successful teenagers just like me around the world. The longing–the burning ache to become the world champion, a desire that seems too far away to attain. The hunger for a new dance partner weighs more than my familiar backpack, filled to the brim with grades that seem to determine my entire being and future. I yearn for a partner who will treat me with respect, craving to work as hard as me to make it in the dance world. A partner who is willing to put in the work. I am constantly wary of the ... Essay On Natural Deodorants And Antiperspirants NATURAL DEODORANTS AND ANTIPERSPIRANTS ANITHA LALI MATHEW, LAKSHMI SAJI, LIDA ELIZA JOSEPH, JIJU VIJAYAN, ELSSEY ABRAHAM NAZARETH COLEGE OF PHARMACY, OTHERA, THIRUVALLA ABSTRACT Most conventional deodorants and antiperspirants contain several ingredients linked to serious health effects, from Alzheimer's disease to virulent cancers. Since deodorants and antiperspirants are designed to stay on our bodies for hours, this allows the potential for more harmful chemicals to be absorbed through the skin. While natural options are available, many people complain about the inadequacy of natural deodorants to adequately mask body odor. There is now an abundance of alternative options–many improved upon since their initial introduction several years ago–that may inspire us to think again about incorporating natural deodorants into our body care regime. The antiperspirant label may list aluminum as: aluminum chlorohydrate ammonium aluminum sulfate potassium aluminum sulfate aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex gly Aside from aluminum, most antiperspirants also contain parabens, antimicrobial agents derived from toluene–a toxic petrochemical derivative. Some evidence suggests that repeated exposure to toluene may contribute to hormone disruption. Thirteen research studies performed since 2000 have shown that various types of parabens act like estrogen in living tissue. Estrogen is known to drive the growth of cancerous cells. Some people with sensitive skin have an allergic reaction to parabens, which results in a skin condition known as contact dermatitis. Antiperspirants also have harsh astringent salts containing metals that can cause granulomas (small, itchy bumps) on underarm skin. • 34. The City Of A Mid Size City The crosswalk in this city is typical of a mid–size city. Small businesses line the busy street, and with people eager to get to their destination, a combination of sights, sounds and smells unites to form this crosswalk. This city's intersection is lively with the commonplace sights of businesses, people and vehicles. On a sunny and breezy afternoon, three Eastern and Western based businesses, on the far left, line up one after another vying for attention from potential patrons. In the middle, the sidewalk is filled with an array of people. At the forefront of the sidewalk there are three people that are on the edge of the crosswalk. To the left, a medium build, middle–aged white female with long black hair is about to cross the crosswalk. She is wearing black shoes, a black dress and a white short–sleeved blouse. Some people would refer to this as business casual. Around her neck is a lanyard that appears to be carrying an identification badge. She is holding a rolled–up, brown lunch bag in her left hand. While on her cell phone, she walks forward and looks downward as to shield her eyes. During her walk, her hair is grazed by the wind. In the middle of the sidewalk, a thin, elderly white man with a gray beard man is the focal point of the picture. He is wearing a brown fedora, thin–framed eyeglasses along with a brown coat, gray pants and black dress shoes. His eyes are gazing forward as if he just locked eyes with someone from afar. • 35. Purdue Is A School That Is Cold Most Of The Academic Year Purdue is a school that is cold most of the academic year. There is a little while in the fall when students first arrive that is warm, and then it gets really cold. This encourages students to stop wearing deodorant because they think that they can get away with it and for the most part they do get away with it. Then at the end of the academic year the season turns to spring and it starts to get warmer outside. This means that people start to get sweat and smell more. The problem is that these students are now trained to not wear deodorant. This is troubling because body odor is disgusting. We thought that it would be a good idea to remind these students, whether they are lifting or even just going to class, to put on deodorant. It will save the that student from being bothered about it and the other students from having to smell it. We went about the research and production in a few steps. First we made a power point video and then we did a voice over on the video. The video was made from slides of words and pictures that we found on the internet. We also found data on the subject. One fact that the Daily Mail found out was that one in five men admitted to never using deodorant or any other kind of body spray (Tozer, 2011). We also found out throughthe Huffington Post that deodorant has antibacterial that stops the stink of body odor before it happens while antiperspirants deal with sweat directly (Klein, 2013). The final fact we found that was interesting is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Raskolikov's Theory In Crime And Punishment Dostoevsky's novel Crime and Punishment analyzes a provocative theory constructed by the main character, Raskolnikov. His theory divides ordinary and extraordinary people. According to Raskolnikov, ordinary people have no opinion of their own, being just mere followers, while extraordinary people craft new opinions for the society. Extraordinary people are prone to greatness, being therefore justified to act in any way in order to achieve it, even if it means to kill or steal. An interesting example Raskolnikov makes is: "the lawgivers and founders of mankind, starting from the most ancient and going on to the Lycurguses, the Solons, the Muhammads, the Napoleons, and so forth, all of them to a man were criminals, from the fact alone that in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This theory can also be applied to Patrick SUskind's novel Perfume, more precisely to the main character, Grenouille. Ironically, if Raskolnikov was not able to live up to his own theory and prove to be an extraordinary individual, Grenouille becomes one without realizing it. I will further on expand my argument by investigating Grenouille's motive, technique of conducting the killings and his relation to guilt. Grenouille's unique gift allows him to understand the world in a way that no one else can. He never forgets a scent by labeling them in his palace of odor and by constantly combining them in the most beautiful ways. Moreover, he knows that attraction is based on scent "... this scent will be ripened and take on a gravity that no one, man or woman, will be able to escape. People will be overwhelmed, disarmed, helpless before the magic of this girl, and they will not know why" (Suskind 171). Grenouille's motive of committing all those crimes is concentrated around a superior idea, a great one: creating the most extraordinary perfume in the world, a perfume that will allow him to rule mankind by combining the scents of the most exquisite ... Analysis Of ' Writing ' Our Lives ' Ebrahim Ziba 10/16/14 English 101 Paper #2 Finding Rhetoric in Our Lives The commercial of my choice was the Old Spice ad that is advertising their new line of body wash that is advertised having "odor block" power. The commercial is made by old spice and has a lot of ethos, pathos, and logos throughout the commercial, and is very effective at all three. I think that the commercial works and gets straight to the point in a very short time. Its main goal is to sell and make money off their product that is said to keep you smelling god and stopping odor from coming off you. They use a very famous actor, Terry Crews, to tell you that the product works and he even shows how it blocks the odor, and it uses logos by giving off the time it ... Another instance of the commercial using ethos is how often the ad and all the diversity in each one being played everywhere on everything, which shows that they have a good feeling that people will see this and purchase the product from them as soon as possible. The brand of Old Spice already does have a good reputation and is one of the leading brands in men's health and cleanliness behind Axe brand. So it doesn't need as many appeals to ethos because they already have good credibility and most people know the name and will trust them. The uses of pathos is how he seems to be screaming at the audience which may seem to intimidate them into buying the old spice body wash. He seems over excited and is very big which may make you feel like if you don't buy it then he'll do something about it. There are a lot of different emotional appeals through this commercial that will affect many people in different emotional states while hearing the commercial. It is very effective and is the most predominately used rhetoric device used in the commercial. Another emotional response you feel would be happiness because the commercial is overall a comedic ad that wants to make you feel happy and make you feel like you can trust them and their product. It seemed more like having an awareness without thought. Her heart began to pound, the beats breaking through, pulsing in her ears. Fear. Confusion. She remembered years ago, as a child, going exploring with her friends in the woods near her house. Not far from the main path was a long dried out log. The peeling bark had a musty odor of earth and rotting vegetation. Her friends had dared her to enter the center of the log and crawl within the darkness. Not wishing to seem scared or girly, she crouched down and inched her way into the opening, her arms in front of her, pulling her forward. Sounds muted, and darkness encircled her as she moved her body into the log's interior. Unidentifiable wisps of cobwebs and debris brushed against her arms and face. • 41. The Importance of Hygiene in Perfume: Patrick SГјskind’s... In eighteenth–century France, the standard of hygiene was at an all–time low. In Patrick SГјskind's novel, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, hygiene plays a key role in developing character behavior. SГјskind portrays a setting of poor hygiene in order to conceal character motives. This is evident through several main characters and several other minor characters such as Grenouille's mother, Father Terrier, Grenouille, Grimal and Taillade–Espinasse. Understanding how SГјskind manipulates hygiene to disguise character aims enables the reader to have a better knowledge of the human values and morals of the time period. Initially, the odor and conditions near Grenouille's birthplace desensitize his mother's cruelty. First, SГјskind sets the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... SГјskind affirms Father Terrier's disgust of Grenouille with, "Terrier shuddered. He felt sick to his stomach. He pulled back his own nose as if he smelled something foul that he wanted nothing to do with", and hints that Father Terrier's repulsion of Grenouille stems from his own poor personal hygiene (17). SГјskind masks the similarity of Father Terrier and Grenouille with Father Terrier's exaggerated disgust of Grenouille. Father Terrier employs the excuse of Grenouille's lack of typical poor hygiene to validate giving him away and thus SГјskind uses hygiene, or a lack of, to conceal Father Terrier's true goals. Furthermore, SГјskind exaggerates Grenouille's sensitivity to the smell of other characters and settings to distract from Grenouille's desire for acceptance by society. The elaborate descriptions of malodorous fragrances that Grenouille experiences isolate him from the rest of society and create a void in which Grenouille needs to fill with normalcy and approval. SГјskind first distinguishes Grenouille's sense of smell from an average person's, "He gathered tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of specific smells and kept them so clearly, so randomly at his disposal, that he could not only recall them when he smelled them again, but could also actually smell them simply upon recollection", and then progresses to Grenouille's pleasure of ... But have any of us imagined what it may be like to NOT smell the roses or anything for that matter? Humans often take their sense of smell for granted, as they rely more heavily on sight and sound in day–to–day activities. Yet smell–in my opinion– can be such an important aspect of life as the brain has the capability to associate smells with danger and it can even elicit memories. For example, the odor of smoke notifies us that something dangerous could be happening, or walking into a bakery with the smell of fresh chocolate chip cookies can cause pleasure, bringing back childhood memories ... Sometimes injuries may also cause a fracture to the cribriform plate" ("Loss of Smell–Ear,Nose, and Throat Disorders"). Infections and tumors near the cribriform plate also can damage the olfactory nerve. Some less common causes of anosmia include the overuse of antibiotics ,which may kill off all the olfactory neurons at once. If the cause is due to sinus infections or irritation, doctors may suggest a treatment of steam inhalation, nasal sprays, antibiotics, and occasionally surgery. If a tumor near the cribriform is causing the individual to lack olfactory abilities, then surgical removal and radiation is typically the course of treatment. However, in causes where anosmia resulted from head trauma or undiagnosed causes there are no current treatment options. Additional ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
