4. Photographer:
Colin Prior (born
1958) is an Scottish
landscape
photographer, who
grew up in Glasgow.
He has spent many
years travelling the
world alone with his
camera.
8. Choose an image…. Describe it
The photo was taken in a
mountainous area of Alaska,
USA.
The sky is very clear without
clouds and is very visible at the
top of the photo. The photo is
framed so you can see the
closer things near the bottom
such as the water and the
surface, but can also clearly
see the mountains in the back
ground.
9. Composition
Prior has made the decision of
framing the photo in order to have
the summit of the mountain placed in
the centre of the photo. I get the
feeling he wanted to capture a
contrast in the photo by having the
clear blue of the water on the right
hand side of the photo and dark
wasteland area on the left.
10. Techniques used
I can’t really see
noteworthy techniques
in this photo and after
looking through some
of Prior’s other work, I
can’t see much there
either.
11. Strengths & Weaknesses
I like the framing of Prior’s
photographs, especially in this
example. He has decided what
he wants or doesn’t want to
include, such as not capturing
more of the mountain and by
contrasting the different things
in each half of the photo. The
only weakness that springs to
mind are the lack of techniques,
although the photo’s quality
doesn’t really decrease without
them.
