Evaluation on Front Cover, Contents
Page and Double Page Spread
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media products?


My media product develops a Masthead which takes place in the top left
corner of the page; the name is ‘K’, which stands for ‘Kraze’. Which is
themed in black on a red background, which is the house style of the
magazine, with also white and blue, but that is contained in the contents
page where most of the writing is placed on a blue background. My
Masthead follows conventions of an actual magazine Masthead as it is
similar to ‘Q’ as it is only has a 1 lettered Masthead but is in a different
font and is a darker colour on red. Also as ‘Q’ sometimes does, it has the
name of the person on the front cover underneath there photo, only mine
has been challenged as I have done mine across the person’s body and
drawn a customized line underneath. My media product has also
developed a few cover lines down the left side of the page which speak
a little about the person on the front cover. The image itself takes up
most of the space on the front cover, as photos do; it shows his
expression and his mood, his face is serious but focussed on something
looking for sympathy, which establishes his genre of music, Rap/Hip
Pop. I also changed the colour of his t-shirt to black which was originally
white, just to make him look more masculine and fierce. My Contents
page also shows a variety of different pictures which represent what is
going to be in this magazine which follows the conventions of a real
magazine contents page as they are also filled with images of people
that are going to be in the magazine. Also the text is mainly speaking
about artists and groups which other media products also do.
Furthermore, the double page spread starts with the artist’s name which
is in a font that associates with that artist and gives more feeling of the
artist to the audience which follows conventions of an actual magazine
double page spread, as they also use font to give a certain feeling
towards the artist/band. The image I have used also shows the audience
what kind of artist he is as he is stood tall looking down the page with a
confident look, as again media products will use certain images of
people to verify their genre of music and what they are like.


How does your media product represent particular social groups?
My media product represents all different social groups, it speaks about
different kinds of music, it may have a bit more of people between the
ages of 12-30 but still some people of an older age, and the music it
does is a variety of Hip/Pop, Rap, Rock, Dance and Indie. When I did my
market research the majority of the people I asked preferred Indie,
Dance and Pop, they preferred to read ‘Q’ magazine which is also a
magazine that contains information and pictures of different genres of
music, also the people I asked were an equal amount of girls and boys
which shows that they both prefer the same kind of music and so my
magazine will have a lot of buyers. The contents page contains images
of both girls and boys and so gives the audience a chance to read about
different types people that they like. It also shows different aged artists
and bands and so goes out to different social groups. My double page
spread mainly only goes out to young girls and boys who like’s a young
male artist who sings Rap/Hip Pop and gives off a confident attitude, and
also who speaks about his past and what the audience could be looking
forward to in the future.


What kind of media institution might distribute your media product
and why?
My magazine would most likely fit into Bauer Media publishing house as
it does lots of different brands such as Pop, Q, Kerrang, FHM and so on,
and so because the magazines are aimed at different kinds of people
and ages especially Q which is aimed at lots of different ages, my
magazine would fit perfectly into this publishing house. IPC wouldn’t
have been a good publishing house for my magazine as that mainly
does magazines for a lot older people and only aimed at them, the
brands it does are NME, TV Times, Uncut and so on. IPC even say
themselves on their webpage that their famous brands deliver high
quality content time, and again to 26 million UK adults in key audiences,
and so my magazine would differently publish well being in IPC
publishing house.
Who would be the audience for your media product?
The audience to my magazine would definitely be a variety of people,
both gender’s, young people, young adults and some older people. The
colours on my magazine front cover are quite light and casual, apart
from a couple of text which is in black but still don’t stand out too much
against the light writing. The picture is of a young male artist who looks,
serious and confident, attracting the ladies to his unique charm, and
attracting the guys with his sharp quotes and standing out, completing
them with knowledge of his music which is Rap/Hip Pop. The font on the
page is called Impact which looks a little sharp but more casual and
gentle but it’s the writing that makes it more powerful and attracts guys,
even kids because of the destruction on the page. My Contents page
holds a lot more colour like, blue, yellow, red black and white, which
catches different people’s eyes with certain colours standing out to
certain people and then reading the text will help people figure out if this
is the magazine for them as is speaks about certain artists and bands
that are going to be in this magazine but are targeted at lots of different
people. My Double page spread is mainly only targeted at young girls
and boys as again because of his genre of music and the way he looks.
Also it speaks about how he was when he was young who could
associate with another young person’s life who might appreciate that he
is telling people why and how he ended up like that. When I did my focus
group on my finished products, I learned that they were very successful
in looking professional, meeting the audiences needs and enjoying the
cover lines and quotes. I now know what I would do differently if I was to
do it again, including making everything colour co-ordinated, making
images the same contrast to blend in, adding a price on my front cover,
and straightening out layout and lining everything up. When I asked the
five people I asked who they thought my final products were aimed at
they said, between the ages of 15-25, also13-20, 14-20, 16 and over,
most likely up to 40 and 17-35, and from this I can see that I have
achieved my aim to getting the audience I want for my magazine.


How did you attract/address your audience?
The house style of this magazine is shown to be unique mixed with
colours such as red, black, white, blue and yellow, which addresses
different audiences to my magazine. On my cover I have also used the
Guttenberg Principle which makes the image stand out and look more
robust on the page attracting people straight to the image and then to
the magazine. The content on the page is all laid out straight and
specific down the left side of the page, and having the image maintains
the right side of the image, with the content it’s probably the lyrics and
quotes that attract the audience’s eye after the image as it’s vigorous
and precise. My contents page attracts people also with its variety of
colours; images of both genders, artists and bands and again the text
used speaking about the singers that will be in this magazine. The
Double page spread attracts people with its wretch, bright text and bold,
confident image that attracts some young guys but mainly girls.


What have you learnt about technologies from the process of
constructing this product?
I have learnt that the Guttenberg Principle is important in the use of
photography for magazine covers as it takes power over the cover and
attracts the audience to the magazine. Also I think I have progressed in
using Photoshop after this, and learned new skills that are available on it
to use which were very helpful such as the quick selection tool which
helped with getting rid of things I didn’t want on the page anymore. Also I
have learnt how to create my own Blogger and Slide share and how to
upload documents and images and finished products on to them. All
these technologies I have learned to use have really helped with
completing my coursework.


Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have
learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Looking back at when I did my ancillary task I have learnt that colour and
the layout and the set out of a page is important and my ancillary task
wasn’t set out that good, but now I have improved on my knowledge of
designing and laying out images and cover stars on layouts. Also my
understanding of photo shop manipulation has improved and helped me
a lot with my covers. My Front cover, contents page and double page
spread are all conventions of different magazines which have helped me
set them all out as they need to be to attract the audiences I want for my
magazine and so that is why I have used the colours I have and set
images in specific positions and to look in a specific way. Also the text I
have used on all three pages is also what attracts the audience with the
sadistic words and truth in it all.

How Kraze magazine develops and challenges conventions

  • 1. Evaluation on Front Cover, Contents Page and Double Page Spread In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? My media product develops a Masthead which takes place in the top left corner of the page; the name is ‘K’, which stands for ‘Kraze’. Which is themed in black on a red background, which is the house style of the magazine, with also white and blue, but that is contained in the contents page where most of the writing is placed on a blue background. My Masthead follows conventions of an actual magazine Masthead as it is similar to ‘Q’ as it is only has a 1 lettered Masthead but is in a different font and is a darker colour on red. Also as ‘Q’ sometimes does, it has the name of the person on the front cover underneath there photo, only mine has been challenged as I have done mine across the person’s body and drawn a customized line underneath. My media product has also developed a few cover lines down the left side of the page which speak a little about the person on the front cover. The image itself takes up most of the space on the front cover, as photos do; it shows his expression and his mood, his face is serious but focussed on something looking for sympathy, which establishes his genre of music, Rap/Hip Pop. I also changed the colour of his t-shirt to black which was originally white, just to make him look more masculine and fierce. My Contents page also shows a variety of different pictures which represent what is going to be in this magazine which follows the conventions of a real magazine contents page as they are also filled with images of people that are going to be in the magazine. Also the text is mainly speaking about artists and groups which other media products also do. Furthermore, the double page spread starts with the artist’s name which is in a font that associates with that artist and gives more feeling of the artist to the audience which follows conventions of an actual magazine double page spread, as they also use font to give a certain feeling towards the artist/band. The image I have used also shows the audience what kind of artist he is as he is stood tall looking down the page with a
  • 2. confident look, as again media products will use certain images of people to verify their genre of music and what they are like. How does your media product represent particular social groups? My media product represents all different social groups, it speaks about different kinds of music, it may have a bit more of people between the ages of 12-30 but still some people of an older age, and the music it does is a variety of Hip/Pop, Rap, Rock, Dance and Indie. When I did my market research the majority of the people I asked preferred Indie, Dance and Pop, they preferred to read ‘Q’ magazine which is also a magazine that contains information and pictures of different genres of music, also the people I asked were an equal amount of girls and boys which shows that they both prefer the same kind of music and so my magazine will have a lot of buyers. The contents page contains images of both girls and boys and so gives the audience a chance to read about different types people that they like. It also shows different aged artists and bands and so goes out to different social groups. My double page spread mainly only goes out to young girls and boys who like’s a young male artist who sings Rap/Hip Pop and gives off a confident attitude, and also who speaks about his past and what the audience could be looking forward to in the future. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? My magazine would most likely fit into Bauer Media publishing house as it does lots of different brands such as Pop, Q, Kerrang, FHM and so on, and so because the magazines are aimed at different kinds of people and ages especially Q which is aimed at lots of different ages, my magazine would fit perfectly into this publishing house. IPC wouldn’t have been a good publishing house for my magazine as that mainly does magazines for a lot older people and only aimed at them, the brands it does are NME, TV Times, Uncut and so on. IPC even say themselves on their webpage that their famous brands deliver high quality content time, and again to 26 million UK adults in key audiences, and so my magazine would differently publish well being in IPC publishing house.
  • 3. Who would be the audience for your media product? The audience to my magazine would definitely be a variety of people, both gender’s, young people, young adults and some older people. The colours on my magazine front cover are quite light and casual, apart from a couple of text which is in black but still don’t stand out too much against the light writing. The picture is of a young male artist who looks, serious and confident, attracting the ladies to his unique charm, and attracting the guys with his sharp quotes and standing out, completing them with knowledge of his music which is Rap/Hip Pop. The font on the page is called Impact which looks a little sharp but more casual and gentle but it’s the writing that makes it more powerful and attracts guys, even kids because of the destruction on the page. My Contents page holds a lot more colour like, blue, yellow, red black and white, which catches different people’s eyes with certain colours standing out to certain people and then reading the text will help people figure out if this is the magazine for them as is speaks about certain artists and bands that are going to be in this magazine but are targeted at lots of different people. My Double page spread is mainly only targeted at young girls and boys as again because of his genre of music and the way he looks. Also it speaks about how he was when he was young who could associate with another young person’s life who might appreciate that he is telling people why and how he ended up like that. When I did my focus group on my finished products, I learned that they were very successful in looking professional, meeting the audiences needs and enjoying the cover lines and quotes. I now know what I would do differently if I was to do it again, including making everything colour co-ordinated, making images the same contrast to blend in, adding a price on my front cover, and straightening out layout and lining everything up. When I asked the five people I asked who they thought my final products were aimed at they said, between the ages of 15-25, also13-20, 14-20, 16 and over, most likely up to 40 and 17-35, and from this I can see that I have achieved my aim to getting the audience I want for my magazine. How did you attract/address your audience? The house style of this magazine is shown to be unique mixed with colours such as red, black, white, blue and yellow, which addresses different audiences to my magazine. On my cover I have also used the
  • 4. Guttenberg Principle which makes the image stand out and look more robust on the page attracting people straight to the image and then to the magazine. The content on the page is all laid out straight and specific down the left side of the page, and having the image maintains the right side of the image, with the content it’s probably the lyrics and quotes that attract the audience’s eye after the image as it’s vigorous and precise. My contents page attracts people also with its variety of colours; images of both genders, artists and bands and again the text used speaking about the singers that will be in this magazine. The Double page spread attracts people with its wretch, bright text and bold, confident image that attracts some young guys but mainly girls. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? I have learnt that the Guttenberg Principle is important in the use of photography for magazine covers as it takes power over the cover and attracts the audience to the magazine. Also I think I have progressed in using Photoshop after this, and learned new skills that are available on it to use which were very helpful such as the quick selection tool which helped with getting rid of things I didn’t want on the page anymore. Also I have learnt how to create my own Blogger and Slide share and how to upload documents and images and finished products on to them. All these technologies I have learned to use have really helped with completing my coursework. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? Looking back at when I did my ancillary task I have learnt that colour and the layout and the set out of a page is important and my ancillary task wasn’t set out that good, but now I have improved on my knowledge of designing and laying out images and cover stars on layouts. Also my understanding of photo shop manipulation has improved and helped me a lot with my covers. My Front cover, contents page and double page spread are all conventions of different magazines which have helped me set them all out as they need to be to attract the audiences I want for my magazine and so that is why I have used the colours I have and set images in specific positions and to look in a specific way. Also the text I
