Slides from a presentation by Richard Waterhouse at the Empowering you in a BIM world event from NBS in June 2016.
Richard is a Fellow of the Institute of Directors and chair of the B555 British Standards committee covering the development of Building Information Modelling in the UK.
He is a member of the European CEN/BT WG215 BIM committee and has been involved in liaison with BuildingSMART for over 15 years. He has recently spoken at conferences across the EU, US and Asia.

Introduction
Why BIM and what is it?

4. ‘What depresses me
infinitely is that we
seem to have moved
hardly at all towards
getting the design skills
together, getting the
professional institutes
together, and getting
the designers and
constructors together.
All this internecine
struggle is very
destructive. We ought
to stop it.’
Sir Andrew Derbyshire
5. BIM – the ISO Definition
Shared digital representation of physical and functional
characteristics of any built object (including buildings,
bridges, roads, etc.) which forms a reliable basis for
decisions
BS ISO 29481-1 2010
What is BIM?
6. BIM – the NBS Definition
A Building Information Model is a rich information model,
consisting of potentially multiple data sources, elements
of which can be shared across all stakeholders and be
maintained across the life of a building from inception to
recycling (cradle to cradle). The information model can
include contract and specification properties, personnel,
programming, quantities, cost, spaces and geometry.
NBS, 2010
What is BIM?
7. Its about the information and collaboration!
The output of the design is not drawings. It is
the information that is represented on the
drawings. The ‘drawings’ are a representation of
multiple information models that support the
design and construction workflow
The big BIM issue
9. "This Government's four year strategy
for BIM implementation will change
the dynamics and behaviours of the
construction supply chain, unlocking
new, more efficient and collaborative
ways of working. This whole sector
adoption of BIM will put us at the
vanguard of a new digital construction
era and position the UK to become the
world leaders in BIM.“
Francis Maude
Minister for the Cabinet Office
The UK Government’s agenda
11. Simple objectives and requirements:
3D collaborative environment by 2016
COBie output at key stages including handover
20% capital cost reduction for construction phase

28. The future
Lower emissions
50%
Reduction in greenhouse gas
emissions in the built environment.
Faster delivery
50%
Reduction in the overall time, from
inception to completion, for new build
and refurbished assets.
Lower costs
33%
Reduction in the initial cost of
construction and the whole life cost
of built assets.
Improvement in exports
50%
Reduction in the trade gap between total
Exports and total imports for
construction
products and materials.
