2. What Is Non-verbal Communication ?
 It’s a transmission of messages by a medium other than speech or
writing.
 Non-verbal communication consists of the feeling or emotion we
convey behind the words we speak verbally.
 Non-verbal communication includes pitch, speed, tone and
volume of voice; gestures and facial expressions; body posture,
stance, and proximity to the listener; eye movements and contact;
and dress and appearance.
 Problems occur when our verbal messages do not match the non-
verbal messages that our bodies are sending out. This can result
in counter-productivity within the business world while also
destroying one’s credibility

anthropologist, Edward T.
Hall, in a normal
conversation between two
persons, less than 35% of
the social meanings is
actually transmitted by
words.
So, at least 65% of it is
conveyed through the body
(non-verbal channel).

 Non-verbal communication originates from the sub conscious,
therefore is convincing and continuous.
 Non–verbal signs are reliable
 Non–verbal cues communicate particular responses
 Non –verbal cues make speech more meaningful & act as
complement to the speech

 Non-verbal communication is spontaneous and unintentional.
 Non-verbal Communication is not universal
 Non–verbal cues could often be vague
 Non-verbal cues could also contradict speech

 To communicate in a realistic way
 To regulate interaction
 To express or hide emotion
 To express power and control
