There are three main types of muscles in the body: skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscles. Skeletal muscle forms about 40% of body weight and is found in the limbs and body wall. It is voluntary muscle that contracts to enable movement. Cardiac muscle is only found in the heart and resembles smooth muscle in being involuntary, but shows striations like skeletal muscle. Smooth muscle is mainly associated with viscera and does not show striations. It is involuntary muscle. Skeletal muscle is composed of bundles of elongated cells called muscle fibers surrounded by connective tissue sheaths.
