Assessment brief
Based on the drawings provided, you are required to prepare a COMPLETE TAKING-OFF for the following structural
elements for the chosen building.
 Pilecaps including excavations from reduce level
 Work below ground floor level including site clearance and excavation, ground floor slab, ground beams and
apron slab.
 First floor slab and beams
 Roof slab and roof beams
 Columns stumps, columns and stiffeners.
Notes:
 Excavate topsoil 50 mm deep to be disposed off site.
Assessment Criteria
Refer to matrix attached.
Teaching Objectives
 To demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of measurement techniques and their application.
 To develop an awareness of the nature, content, and significance of tendering and contractual documentation.
 To have sufficient knowledge and understanding of the Standard Method of Measurement in taking-off quantities.
 To develop an understanding of the principles of measurement in preparing the Bills of Quantities and
Specification writing.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1. Explain and able to interpret clauses in the Standard Method of Measurement (SMM) for the various trades in
relation to sub-structure and reinforced concrete frame works.
2. Distinguish and illustrate differences in writing-up descriptions in accordance to design changes for sub-structure
and reinforced concrete frame works.
3. Evaluate the relationship between Specifications, Drawings and Bill of Quantities in Tender Documents for sub-
structure and reinforced concrete frame works.
4. Adopt a systematic approach to take-off quantities from drawings for the preparation of Bills of Quantities for
sub-structure and reinforced concrete frame works.
5. Generate a conceptual understanding of and the ability to competently carry out the preparation of the Bills of
Quantities for sub-structure and reinforced concrete frame works.
Submission
Each student is to submit in the following sequence:
 Taking off list
 Query list
 Dimension sheets
 Billing (in own handwriting)
 Appropriate front cover with the names of group members.
The Leader of each group is to collect from everyone in the group and attach the front cover page and arrange it in
the following sequence.
 Pilecaps including excavations from reduce level.
 Work below ground floor level including site clearance and excavation, ground floor slab, ground beams and
apron slab.
 First floor slab and beams
 Roof slab and roof beams
 Columns and stiffeners.
