Where The Red Fern Grows Book Analysis
What my essay is about is, I'm going to compare differences and similarities in the movie and in the
book. I will be talking about the book and the movie in "Where The Red Fern Grows" and about
how they are similar and how they are different in every way. There are a lot of similarities and
differences in the movie that portray how they are easily different. There is a huge difference in the
book and the movie. In the book Rubin got tripped by a vine and fell on the axe.But there's is a big
difference in the movie Rainy tripped Billy and fell on the axe. They both fell on an axe, But in the
book billy went to the grave where Rubin was buried and put some flowers down and hid from
Rainy's momma. In the movie Billy went Rainy's funeral. In the

Where the red fern grows by Wilson rawls was wrote in 1961. This story is about a boy who earned
money to buy two redbone coonhounds. He trained them to hunt "ringtails". He ends up entering a
championship and wins. Sadly, after an unfortunate event his dogs passed away. First in the book
the boy, billy earned enough money to buy the dogs he wanted for a long time.he teaches them to
hunt coons. He ends up entering them in a championship coon hunt. After a sad event his dogs
passed away. Soon after he buried his dogs. Next the movie was a little different from the book. He
saved his money that he earned to buy two redbone coonhounds. He then teaches them to hunt
coons with a coonskin that he got with a trap. Him and his grandpa entered

In Where the Red Fern Grows, the story is told of how young Billy has worked so hard to save up,
buy, and then train his dogs. Billy has trained his dogs so well that his grandfather believes that he is
good enough to be entered into a hunting contest. He asks billy what he thinks of this idea, and Billy
is very excited. When Billy tells his grandpa that he wants to be entered in the contest, his grandpa
has a very emotional reaction described by Wilson Rawls through a simile. Wilson Rawls uses the
simile "Grandpa flew out of gear like a model–T Ford" to describe how excited Billy's grandfather
was about the contest. Wilson does this by saying that Grandpa lost control of his emotions, just like
how a Model–T ford can lose control from the

The Theme Of Persistence In Where The Red Fern Grows
The great physician George Sheehan once said, "Success means having the courage, the
determination, and the will to become the person you believe you were meant to be." Sheehan
meant in this quote that you can do anything if you are willing to use your willpower and energy to
do so. This leads to the theme shown in Where the Red Fern Grows by Mr.Rawls. In the
development of the book Where the Red Fern Grows the main theme persistence will lead to your
own success is shown strongly throughout. To demonstrate the means of how Rawls showed the
previously stated theme we shall start from the beginning. Persistence can be seen through the use
of time with determination and purpose. "A year passed. I was twelve. I was over the halfway ...

Billy was loyal, he was loyal to his idea of having two dogs at the start of this tale and now he's
being loyal to listen to his promise with his dogs. He's making sure that he does what he says. In this
way he is always doing his best or as the theme suggests being persistent to following through with
his word. Even though his arms and back felt horrible he kept going and even with the questioning
of his father he didn't back down. This ties into persistence because persistence means the following
of a man's(or woman) thoughts or ideas. Billy felt that he must complete the chopping of the tree
even though his dad told him time and time again. He knew that he had to persist his way through.
This is yet only one of the many times Rawls shows the true theme of this book. Subsequently, the
theme is shown again as the story continues on. Here Grandpa shows his determination to getting
Billy in a hunting contest.. " 'Billy,' he said, 'it takes some doing to have a set of dogs entered in this
hunt. I've been working on this for months. I've written letters on top of letters. I've even had several
good friends in town helping me. You see, I've kept a record of all the coons your dogs have caught,
and believe me, their catch is up there with the best of them' " (Rawls 157). In this example, Rawls
proves not just the main character, Billy, but Grandpa also shows persistence through hard work,
showing

Examples Of Determination In Where The Red Fern Grows
Colin Powell once said, "A dream doesn't become reality through magic; it takes sweat,
determination and hard work." A character is revealed through hard work and most importantly,
determination. "Determination is the key to a goal" is what is shown throughout the book, Where
the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls. Billy (the main character) is a determined to reach all goals
that will take hard work, but a lot of determination. Determination is shown through all chapters.
One time Billy shows determination is on paged 18–19 in the first few chapters. Billy's character
was determined to earn money to get two coonhounds when his father refused to get him the dogs.
Billy had to earn $50 dollars in order for him to get the two coonhounds that were ... Show more

On pages 131–133, Billy was determined to save Little Ann and Old Dan from the water. Little Ann
went into the water to save Old Dan from the water. Little Ann was lucky to save Old Dan from the
water – but was luckless to save herself. Billy couldn't hear Little Ann in the water, but could hear
Old Dan in the large sycamore that had fallen in the river. His determination was brought on by fear
of his dogs, Little Ann and Old Dan. Billy came as fast as he could and turned on his lanter to see
better. "If she gets down in that old tree top, she'll drown." is what billy said to rubin while they
were panicking about Little Ann when she was in trouble in the water. Little Ann made it out fairly
safe. She saw the ghost coon in the distance. Little Ann went chasing after the ghost coon. The coon
got his name by disappearing out of nowhere when when he gets tired. Billy was determined to
catch the ghost coon, and this might be his chance. He saw that Little Ann was 15 feet behind the
ghost coon and Old Dan was 25 yards behind Little Ann. Billy was very determined that he thought
that this would be the time to whoop his dogs. They finally caught the ghost coon! This was a very
big goal that took hard work and determination for not only the dogs, but Billy too. Billy trained
them and motivated them to catch the ghost

Where the Red Fern Grows
Where the Red Fern Grows by Fgosal
Where the Red Fern Grows tells about a man named Billy Colman, whose mind drifted away back
on his boyhood memories when he got his dogs. The young Billy was a boy who wanted two coon
hunting dogs of his own more than anything in the world. He worked very hard by selling wares and
saved money to pursue his dreams. After two years, he finally had enough money for two dogs.
Billy made a difficult journey to get his dogs. He loved his dogs very much and spent almost a
whole time to train his dogs. Eventhough there were many problems came to him and his dogs, they
could passed them. This strong bonds between them finally reached the climax when Billy joined
the coon hunting championship and won it. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Second, in the book Little Ann was known to be smarter than Old Dan, but in the movie they looked
alike and had no difference from their appearance and characters. Third, the book tells about how
Billy caught the first coon to train his dogs, while the movie did not show such an action. The next
difference is the chapter 11 of the book tells about Little Ann who almost got drowned in the icy
water and Billy could save her owing to his old lantern, but we couldn't see it in the movie. Another
different thing is when Billy and The Pritchards' boys, Rainie and Rubin, had a bet to tree the ghost
coon. The book mentions that they betted two dollars for it, but 5 dollars in the movie. It is said in
the book how Little Ann won the best looking hound contest, but the process didn't appear in the
movie. The last thing is in the book Billy got 4 coons, so he could win the contest, while in the
movie it is said that Billy didn't win the championship but he was given the title by Mr. Bellington,
the one who won the match. Both the novel and the movie have the strengths and weaknesses. In my
opinion, it is more clearly explained about the strong bonds between Billy and his dogs in the book
than in the movie. I can really understand how much Billy loved his dogs, and the expression of
love was more in the book than in the movie. The book gives more detailed information than the
movie. However, I prefer watching the movie because it seems to be more

Short Story Of 'Where The Red Fern Grows'
A story about an adventurous kid & his hounds – hunting, winning competitions and facing death
In the beginning of the story "Where The Red Fern Grows" a boy named Billy saw a group of dogs
fighting on the street. Billy stopped the dogs from fighting and noticed a red hound all beat up. He
took the hound home, fed him, washed him, and released him. This made him remember his old
days of owning a hound.
When Billy was 10 he wanted two hunting hounds but his family couldn't afford it. Billy had a
sickness called puppy love so he couldn't help asking for puppies. One day he saved and worked for
his money to get two puppy hounds. He named the dogs Old Dan and Little Ann. Billy and his dogs
had so many adventures of hunting racoons. Billy once caught a ghost racoon that has never been
caught before all thanks to his dogs. Billy's dogs help him become a coon hunting expert! The dogs
would never let a coon go even if it was a stormy night. Old Dan and Little Ann were Billy's best
friends. They would always stick together and never leave each other.
One day Billy's grandfather signed him up for a racoon hunting competition. Billy was super excited
and his dogs were too. Papa, grandpa, and the hounds all went hunting with Billy. They all stayed at
a campsite and ate their breakfast. That morning Billy got his first cup of coffee. It made him feel
older and excited to have his very first cup of coffee. After breakfast, Billy and his hound started to

"A dream doesn't become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination, and hard work." said
Colin Powell. This quote is saying that you can't achieve a goal without trying. In the book, Where
the Red Fern Grows, the author, Wilson Rawls, shows the theme as hard work pays off. From
chapter 5 in the story it says "A warm puppy tongue caressed my sore foot." This Shows that he is a
hard worker through the fact that his foot is sore from walking so long. This ties back to the theme
because he spent so much effort and energy walking all the way to get his dogs. This is the first
example of the big theme of the story. In chapter 9 the story says"I can't leave the tree. If I do,the
coon will get away." Hard work pays off is clearly shown

Analysis Of Where The Red Fern Grows
"Cherish these moments – tomorrow they'll be memories" ,pinterest said and has a deep meaning to
the story Where the Red Fern Grows. In the story Where the Red Fern Grows the theme is to cherish
those close to you before it's too late. The story is also a good lesson to learn because you never
know when someone vital to your life may die so cherish them while you have them. This quote
from pinterest fits the theme of the story because when Old Dan and Little Ann almost died Billy
felt like he should've loved them more when they were alive. Without that time in the story the story
would be completely different. This is a wise quote because when Billy got his dogs after working
so hard to get them he knew that once he got the dogs he would remember how he got his dogs
forever. That was one of the most important parts in the story and without them the story would be
different. Since the part is in the story now the part makes a huge impact on the book and that is
why that supports my quote and theme. In the story there were several moments that Billy would
remember for the rest of his life . Billy had multiple lessons he had learned through the course of his
life so far, and there will still be many more lessons to come. There are other pieces to this story that
are important to the story. There is one part in the story where Little Ann and Old Dan nearly died
from the winter storm. Without that time in the story the story would have changed dramatically.

What does a ten–year–old have to look forward to in the fifth grade? Honestly, nothing much.
Learning to drive and getting to stay out late does not become a way of life for, at least, another six
years. In the days of learning about reciprocals and chloroplast I found myself looking forward to
the thirty minutes of story time after recess the most. At that age, it was the sole activity that could
hold my attention for any given time. Excited and attentive, we would all gather around Ms.
Powell's old, wooden rocker and listen to story after story. In the fifth grade books became more
than just stories; I fell in love with reading for pleasure. It has been nearly a decade since I have

One of the smallest, yet most important lessons, was how to empathize. The power of empathy and
imagination opened up the world around me. How could it be that I found and continue to find
myself a better person through reading someone else's words? I do not know, but it happened. I am
thankful for Ms.Powell and the stories she would read after recess. Nothing has stuck with me more
than that special activity. In the fifth grade books became more than just books, and it has been that
way ever since. Word count:

Examples Of External Conflict In Where The Red Fern Grows
In the book where the red fern grows by Wilson Rawls, the main character Billy Coleman faces
many internal and external conflicts on of which is puppy love. Puppy love is one of the internal
conflicts because when he gets the dogs he has been working towards for two years he loves his two
Koon hounds old Dan and Little Ann. Another internal conflict that billy faces is companionship. He
faces companionship because there are not many people where he lives and his crazy sisters are not
his companion. So he needs the dogs for companionship. The last internal conflict is billy guilt. He
feels guilty because when he went shopping he bought overalls for his father, a bunch of yarn for his
mother and candy for himself. The reason he feels guilty is

Commentary On The Book Where The Red Fern Grows
One of my favorite things to do is read, except textbooks I don't like reading them. I like a book that
can keep me engaged, one that makes it hard to put down, or a book that has me thinking about it
well after I am finished reading it. This assignment has been a little difficult for me because I can't
decide on a book, however one book keeps popping into my mind so I think that is the one I will
share. It is called Where The Red Fern Grows. I haven't thought about or even read this book in a
very long time and it is directed more towards a younger audience than adults, so I hope that it still
works for this assignment. The scene from the book that I liked most happened on one of their
hunting trips when they encounter a mountain lion. The

The movie and book Where The Fern Grows have many differences and similarities. Some of the
differences are noticeable and some are more subtle, however I found that there were more
similarities than differences. The similarities made it easy to relate the book to the movie. And the
differences kept me interested in both. The book Where The Red Fern Grows is mainly about a
young boy by the name of Billy, that hopes and prays for a pair of hunting coons. So he works hard
and saves enough money to buy a pair to hunt with. After buying the coons he spent many hours
teaching them to hunt together. After learning the basics of hunting Billy and his grandfather made a
bet with two troublemaker kids. They were known as the Pritchard twins. The bet was that Billy's
coons couldn't tree the ghost coon. After betting a dollar and showing their money they began the
hunt. After they had treed the ghost coon, Billy chose not to hurt the coon. So one of the Pritchard

Summary Of Where The Red Fern Grows
Two dogs, and one of the happiest little boys I have ever read about, Billy couldn't be sad for more
than ten minutes. And this is what brings me to believe that Wilson Rawls explores the idea in
Where the Red Fern Grows that hard work could bring you to a much happier and satisfying life.
For the first example, it is when Billy worked for his two dogs. Billy worked for two years to get
Little Ann and Old Dan. When he first started, it was difficult. He most likely thought he wouldn't
be able to do it. But when he did, he was shocked, but also happy. And when he got those dogs, he
cried. And he even said himself that he was the most elated boy in the world.
My second example is when he caught his first raccoon with Old Dan and Little Ann. It was the
beginning of the hunting season. And his mom let him go hunting. When he took the dogs out, they
found the smell of a raccoon. At first, it was hard to catch the raccoon, because Little Ann and Old
Dan wouldn't go across a river. But he kept pushing and saying they could do it. They finally did,
and when him and his dad were skinning the raccoon, Billy couldn't have been more proud and
happy of him and his dogs. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

enough money he finally gets the dogs from Grandpa. With his dogs with him, they become the best

they won the prize and the cup. As the dogs hunt, they encountered a mountain lion which Old Dan

after that Little Ann dies, When his parents told him that they were going to move Billy went to the

Where The Red Fern Grows Character Analysis
There is a saying, "a dog is a man's' best friend". In the book Where The Red Fern Grows,by Wilson
Rawls, Billy Coleman is a young boy who wants nothing other than two Redbone coonhounds and
to hunt in the Ozark Mountains with them. Through his determination, he works up money buy the
pups, but he is faced with many struggles along the road. His determination, the will power and
strong heart to make it through the struggles, made him the boy he is now. Over all, Billy Coleman
and his dogs face many conflicts throughout the book, but he stays determined to make it through.
One of Billy's biggest conflicts is when his dogs tree a coon in a very large tree. Bill knows this tree
as "the big tree", the one that is impossible to climb let alone cut down. As said on pg 78 of Where
The Red Fern Grows, "I know he's there," I said, "but there's nothing I can do. I can't climb it. Why
it's sixty feet up to the first limb and it would take me a month to cut it down."(Rawls) Billy
struggles with being able to climb the tree because he feels that he will not be able to because it is so
high up. Also, he knows that it would be super hard to cut the tree down. Though he struggles he
pulls through and is determined to get the coon. "Gritting my teeth...I don't care how big you are,
I'm not going to let my dogs down...I'm going to cut you down. I don't care if it takes me a whole
year."(Rawls 78) Billy knows that it is going to be a hard task, but he is determined to cut the tree

Where the Red Fern Grows
I cannot remember the first time I read Where the Red Fern Grows, by Wilson Rawls. I read it at
about age ten, and I have lost count of how many times I read it since. It was a period in my life
when childhood was nearly over, but adolescence had not yet set in, and it was a time when animals
were my greatest love.
Where the Red Fern Grows is a novel about a young boy and his two dogs, but to an animal–lover,
it is much more. The story is told in the first person narrative, by an adult reminiscing about his
childhood; the reader experiences life through the eyes of an eleven year old boy living in the Ozark
Mountains of Arkansas. Over the boy's shoulder, an older narrator frequently ... Show more content

As a child I read Where the Red Fern Grows for its adventures and the profound love Billy has for
his two dogs. Billy and his dogs go hunting every night and play in the river during the day. Since I
felt I was somewhat of a tomboy, and had two dogs of my own, this greatly appealed to me. The
suspense I felt whenever the dogs treed a coon, or the time Grandpa was lost in the blizzard and the
dogs found him, never ceased each time I read the book. As I re–read it now, however, I can see that
there are many more factors that appealed to me, but I did not realize it at the time.
This is a book about love –– not only human love for an animal, but the love of a parent for a child,
a man for his home, and a special love between two animals. Billy's family is extremely close–knit.
His mother teaches Billy and his two sisters to read and write because the school is too far away,
and when he turns eleven. Billy's father lets him help out in the fields. To complete the happy nest.
Grandpa lives right down the road, and has the family over every Sunday afternoon for supper.
There is security in this atmosphere of love. After leaving home for three days to pick up the
puppies, Billy's mother breaks down and cries at his return –– this is punishment enough for Billy,
and he

Dog Ownership In Where The Red Fern Grows
For hundreds of years, dogs have served as the benefactor for man. However, beyond their vigilant
nature, their firm sense of loyalty enables them to form a kinship with their owner that is
unsurpassable. While dogs' companionship is often detailed in books and movies, their devout
obedience translates off the screens and pages and is utilized by humans in a variety of ways, such
as; a companion, protector, or guide for the disabled. However, as with any relationship, the pair
faces obstacles or challenges that invokes camaraderie and deepens their emotional bond. As a
result, both the life of the dog and his owner benefit physically and emotionally from their
unrelenting kinship. In Where the Red Fern Grows, a young boy, named Billy, longed ... Show more

A common plot line begins with a dog being portrayed as an inconvenience to their new owners.
However, despite the hardships that ensue, the uncanny ability of dogs to evoke emotional
connections forces the development of an unbreakable and loving bond. The movie Marley and Me,
exemplifies this dynamic. In this film, Jennifer Grogan and John Grogan both sensed a missing
piece in their relationship and believed a dog would complete it. One day, the Grogans decided to
bring home a little puppy and named him Marley. Initially, Marley was reckless and destroyed
everything around the house. The Grogans even attempted to medicate Marley to help him be less
rambunctious. Despite all of Marley's craziness and chaos, the Grogan family recognized his heart

was in a fight and it was an old dog. He took the dog in and let it rest in his house. Next, he let the
dog go and go back to his home. he said, "Come on, boy, let's go home boy.". I think it was pretty
cool and all how billy was really nice to the dog, however h couldn't keep him because it was not his

Compare And Contrast Where The Red Fern Grows
Every living thing on Earth can have emotion some show it the same as others but some can show it
in a unique way. In the novel Where the Red Fern Grows, by Wilson Rawls Old Dan and Little Ann
share many similarities and differences. The main character named Billy and he is ten years old is
living with his Papa, Mama and three sisters in the Ozark Mountains in Oklahoma, and all Billy
wants is two hounds that he can hunt "coons" with. His family cannot afford them, however, so
Billy works multiple jobs for two years and saves up the money to buy them. Only then does he tell
his plan to his Grandpa, who helps arrange the purchase. In Where the Red Fern Grows, Old Dan
and Little Ann are similar in the way that they are both are loving where as ... Show more content on

Old Dan is strong but he is not too smart because he's completely obsessed with catching coons and
will not stop until he finishes the job. "When I came up to the tree I thought Little Ann had treed
Old Dan. She was sitting on her haunches staring up and bawling the tree bark. There, a good fifteen
feet from the ground, with his hind legs planted firmly in the center of a big limb, and his front feet
against the trunk of the tree, stood Old Dan, bawling for all he was worth"(Rawls 109). Old Dan is
so obsessed with catching the coons that he would jump out of the tree to catch it even if he died.
Little Ann is nervous at this point so she decided to call to Billy for help, and even after Billy got
older and down from the tree he started to climb back up. Little Ann saw Old Dan get sucked into a
muskrat done so she was smart enough to call for Billy and Billy didn't know what was going on she
started to dig where she saw Old Dan go under. "She was digging in a small hole about the size of a
big apple. It was the air hole for a muskrat den. I pulled Little Ann away from the hole, knelt down,
and put my ear to it. I could hear something, and feel a vibration in the ground. It was an eerie sound
and seemed to be coming from far away. I listened. Finally I understood what the noise was. It was
the voice of Old Dan"(Rawls 107). After she dug the beginning of the hole Billy started to hear the
bawl of Old Dan underground and Billy was able to pull Old Dan out. Her cunning ability to almost
be able to communicate with Billy allowed her to show Billy that Old Dan was stuck underground.
Old Dan and Little Ann share many differences that are good and bad but when it becomes time to
hunt Little Ann uses her brain to find and tree the coon and Old Dan uses his brawn to catch and
finish the

Where The Red Fern Grows Book Analysis
Where The Red Fern Grows is an entertaining and sad story about a boy and his dogs. It was made
into a book and a movie. Of course there were differences and similarities. The story was the same
over all. This essay will state my thoughts on the book and the movie. I really enjoyed the book. I
think it had more detail than the movie. It was also more sad than the movie. I think it was more sad
because it had more detail and we got to know the characters more. It is probably one of my favorite
books. I also liked the movie. But, I think it skipped some of the key details. Also, if someone was
only watching the movie and not reading the book they would not get very attached to the
characters. Overall I think the movie did a good job at bringing

Billy Wilson's Where The Red Fern Grows
In Where the Red Fern Grows, the main character, Billy, faces many challenges and attempts to
overcome them in his own way. First, he wants a dog; he considered it 'dog fever.' He did cling to
the hope that someday his with would be fulfilled and he would have a dog, but not just any dog, a
coon hound. And he wants two of them. After struggling for two years, Billy finally gets enough
money to be able to buy the coon hounds in question. Upon acquiring the two redbone hounds, he
proceeds to name them Old Dan and Little Ann, after two names he saw carved into a tree. Dan and
Ann soon prove to be worthy of his hard work. They go on many adventures together, catching
coons for sport. He loves his dogs, and they're all he wants. As time progresses, Billy finds it
increasingly harder to hunt with his hounds in peace. His mother seems constantly worried, and his
grandfather is so proud of his coon hunting accomplishments that he boasts to anyone who will
listen to him. This proves fatal for one boy, Rubin, who decides with his brother, Rainie, that they

It tends to draw on and on, and the book itself is relatively short in word count, but as you read it, it
seems to slow down. However, the story is original and does reflect the atmosphere of the
approximate 1920's, as the story was written forty years later. The tale is moving, in a sense,
because it is centered around a boy, his dogs, and their mutual love for each other. It is also about
how Billy hunts and skins raccoons with his dogs for fun, but if that is something you can overlook,
then so be it. Billy, being the main character, has many good and bad points, and is overall a good
person. The story itself is a hard one to follow, but after a while readers should be able to acclimate
to the writing style. This book is good for humans aged 9–13 years, as Billy himself grows from ten
to fourteen throughout the course of the

Character Analysis: Where The Red Fern Grows
A gaunt boy is walking through the big woods. In his mind there is a garden, blackberries, and
money. In his hand is a shiny tin can. And in his heart are two redbone coon hounds. In the book
"Where the Red Fern Grows", the main character Billy wants two coon hounds, but he has to pay
for them himself, so he saves for two years to get his dream hounds. In this book, Wilson Rawls
portrays the theme that to find love, hard work must come first.
Billy, the hound dogs' owner, proves that hard work is vital in giving and receiving love. First, Billy
decides that he is going to buy the hounds himself, which will take him a long two years. During
this time, he plants a garden, picks blackberries, and does odd jobs for neighbors to get cash. Billy
uses all his efforts to get his dogs, and then walks thirty miles to the nearest town to pick up ... Show

An occurrence of this is when Billy was attacked by a mountain lion. Though the love she had for
Billy was strong already, after she fought the mountain lion with him and Old Dan, their bond
became one of such powerful love that a background character said, "People have been trying to
understand dogs since the beginning of time. One never knows what they'll do. You can read every
day where a dog saved the life of a drowning child, or lay down his life for his master. Some people
call this loyalty. I don't. I may be wrong, but I call it love. The deepest kind of love." The point here
is that the dogs didn't have this love in the beginning. They earned it through Billy and the dogs'
hard work. Another instance of love is when Old Dan was given two biscuits. Old Dan and Little
Ann had killed many coons at this point, always working together. Old Dan sniffed the biscuits, then
picked them up in his mouth and brought them to Little Ann. Then, they each ate one of the biscuits
at the same time. This shows how the dogs become close through their partnership in war, so to

Where The Red Fern Grow: A Classic
A classic story about a boy and his two dogs. I'm talking about the book where the red fern grows.
It's about Billy and his life with his two dogs little Ann and old Dan. It starts with how he got them
and goes through their entire life all the way to the end. It's a nice story to read to pass time. This is
why Where the Red Fern Grows is a classic.
The book starts off great with a man helping an old dog and how he remembers about his childhood
and how he had two dogs. Then the story flashes back to before he had his dogs. It talks about how
he got every boy's love for dogs but stronger. He explains how he grew sick without them and how
they couldn't afford them. It then says that throughout two long years he saved up all the money he
made

Determination In Where The Red Fern Grows
Novel Theme Essay Michael Jordan once said, "Some people want it to happen, some wish it would
happen, others make it happen." In order to achieve your goals, you must work for it and be
determined to get them. You can stay home and dream about your goals, or you can go out and
actually take a risk. This quote shows the theme of determination in Where the Red Fern Grows, by
Wilson Rawls. The theme of determination is shown in section one of this book. On pages 20
through 21 when Billy worked consistently for two hard years collecting money to buy pups. This
shows the theme of determination because Billy was determined to earn enough money to buy two
coon hounds to hunt and play with. Furthermore, the theme of determination is shown on pages 27
through 28, when Billy went through a long, hard journey on foot to go get his dogs. This supports
the theme because Billy was so determined to get those dogs, he was willing to journey on his bare
feet to retrieve them. Billy's determination in section one was crucial to him getting his dogs. ...

One example is on page 94, when Billy worked his arms off trying to cut down a big sycamore tree
with a coon in it. This supports the theme because Billy was determined to get this coon for his
pups. His dogs found the coon and chased it up the tree, and he had to cut the tree down to keep up
his end of the deal. He showed determination again on pages 115 through 119 when he worked very
hard in the freezing cold to try and save Little Ann from the frozen river. This shows determination
because Billy loved Little Ann, and was determined to save her. If Billy didn't use determination, he
would have never gotten his first coon skin, and Ann might have

The Theme Of Where The Red Corn Grows
Where the Red Fern grows
A novel by Wilson Rawls named Where the Red Fern Grows
is the story of a boy, his two hounds (which he named Old Dan and
Little Ann), and all of the adventures they shared together. A
loving threesome, they ranged the dark hills and river bottoms of
the Cherokee country. Old Dan had the brawn, Little Ann had the
brains, and Billy had the will to train them to be the finest hunting
team in the valley. Glory and victory awaited them, but sadness
waited too. Close by was the strange and wonderful power that is
only found Where the Red Fern Grows. An exciting tale of love
and adventure one will never forget. Some themes that will be
encountered ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One example shown was when Billy worked and worked for two whole years
selling accessories to fisherman. After two years he finally saved up enough money to
buy his hounds, which was an excellent reward for hard work. An additional example is
when Billy took a long, hard, and hot journey barefoot alone to Tahlequah. He faces
bullies and is afraid to turn every corner knowing something unknown will be lurking
behind the walls but in the end, he received his hounds and was very happy for what he
accomplished but for the most part he was happy that he got his hounds. Another
example explained in the novel was when Billy got his hounds and he trained the and
taught them all of the tricks he knew. After hard training his hounds (Old Dan and Little
Ann) became the finest hounds in the Ozark mountain ranges. They went hunting every
night and skinned many coons. One more example is when Little Ann got trapped in the
icy river and Billy and Old Dan worked to get Little Ann out but all of that work was
worth the life of Little Ann. Finally, after all the hard work put into his hounds, Billy's
grandfather came to him with an invitation to a coon–hunting tournament. Billy was full
of zest when he knew he was going to go to a coon–hunting tournament. He proved he
had the finest hounds by working hard and believing in himself and his

Examples Of Determination In Where The Red Fern Grows
Determination is the first theme shown throughout the novel, Where The Red Fern Grows. When
Billy ordered his two dogs and went on a trip to get them, Billy used his strong determination to
brave out rude city people and get over all of the hardships in his way. "I was ready to die for my
dogs." (Rawls 45–46) After Billy went to the city and collected his pups, he went on a venture to go
back home. When the night came, Billy and his dogs slept in a cave, but then a mountain lion caught
the scent of Billy's dogs and roared out into the Ozarks. Billy became determined and protected his
dog with his life against the mountain lion. Another example of determination in the novel, Where
The Red Fern Grows is when Billy would not stop looking ... Show more content on

A blizzard with deafening roars of wind and whitening snow settled in and Billy's dogs were no
where to be found. Even though the group wanted to head back to camp, Billy kept looking for his
dogs and used determination with a little help with people from the camp to obtain his dogs back.
The theme, determination, helped Billy numerous amount of times to save someone from getting
hurt or killed in the novel. Spirituality is the next theme shared with the reader in the novel, Where
The Red Fern Grows. When Billy got home from his expedition from town, he attempted to
convince his mom that how god got him the puppies and their names. "I told her about praying for
the two pups, about the magazine and the plans I had made." (Rawls 54) After Billy came home
from the trip to the town, his family and himself ate diner and asked a few questions. Billy then
went to bed and told his mother about his wondering. Billy shows spirituality when telling his
mother that he believes that god made his dogs to be in Billy's hand. "I know–if god made room in
heaven for all good dogs, I know he made a special place for you." (Rawls 247) When Billy buried
Little Ann next to Old Dan, Billy was extremely dejected and wondered why god let Billy's dogs
die. Right before his family and himself left for town,

worked very hard by selling wares and saved money to pursue his dreams. After two years, he

Never Give Up In 'Where The Red Fern Grows'
Winston Churchill once said, "Never give up on something that you can't go a day without thinking
about." In the story Where the Red Fern Grows, by Wilson Rawls, the theme of the novel is never
give up . First, in chapter 2 it says, "I was in bed one night trying to figure out a way I could get
some dogs..." This shows the theme because Billy is not giving up on getting his dogs. Also because
Billy is thinking about something he can't go a while without thinking about, just like the quote
states. Later, in chapter 9 it says, "...give me the strength to finish the job." This shows Billy not
giving up because he so badly wants to finish doing his job even though he is out of energy. This
also shows the quote because he will not let go of

Where The Red Fern Grows Characters
Have you ever seen two humans and noticed that they are very different from each other? All
humans have different appearances no matter how small, just like all dogs. In addition, every human
and dog faces conflicts in different ways. These differences make everyone unique. Old Dan and
Little Ann are two redbone coonhound characters in the novel, Where the Red Fern Grows by
Wilson Rawls, that have different appearances and methods of dealing with conflict. However, they
both have similar personalities. First of all, Dan and Ann have very different methods of handling
conflict. Old Dan does not think much before he goes into action. Billy announces, "It was the voice
of Old Dan ... In some way he had gotten into that old muskrat den" (107). He was on the tail of a
coon when he got stuck in the den. Dan did not think about it before he tried to find the coon. This
demonstrates that he is impulsive. There is also another time that Dan ... Show more content on

Billy reports, "Old Dan, seeing the fate of his little friend (Little Ann), had quit the chase and come
back to help her" (115). Dan quit chasing the coon and went over to assist Little Ann when she was
in trouble. This shows that Old Dan is loyal to Little Ann. Also, Old Dan only hunts with one
specific hound. Billy announces, "[Old Dan] would not hunt with another hound, other than Little
Ann ... he would not hunt, even with me, unless Little Ann was with him" (102). Old Dan again
shows that he is loyal because he does not hunt by himself with Billy or with other hounds.
Similarly, Little Ann left to help Old Dan. The author composes, "There, scratched deep in the soft
leaves were two little beds. One was smaller than the other" (93). Ann left the doghouse and went to
aid Dan's effort in keeping the coon in the big tree. They slept together in beds they made all night
to make sure it did not leave. This reveals that Little Ann is loyal to Old Dan. Both characters are

Where The Red Fern Grows Book Analysis

  • 1. Where The Red Fern Grows Book Analysis What my essay is about is, I'm going to compare differences and similarities in the movie and in the book. I will be talking about the book and the movie in "Where The Red Fern Grows" and about how they are similar and how they are different in every way. There are a lot of similarities and differences in the movie that portray how they are easily different. There is a huge difference in the book and the movie. In the book Rubin got tripped by a vine and fell on the axe.But there's is a big difference in the movie Rainy tripped Billy and fell on the axe. They both fell on an axe, But in the book billy went to the grave where Rubin was buried and put some flowers down and hid from Rainy's momma. In the movie Billy went Rainy's funeral. In the ... He trained them to hunt "ringtails". He ends up entering a championship and wins. Sadly, after an unfortunate event his dogs passed away. First in the book the boy, billy earned enough money to buy the dogs he wanted for a long time.he teaches them to hunt coons. He ends up entering them in a championship coon hunt. After a sad event his dogs passed away. Soon after he buried his dogs. Next the movie was a little different from the book. He saved his money that he earned to buy two redbone coonhounds. He then teaches them to hunt coons with a coonskin that he got with a trap. Him and his grandpa entered ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Where The Red Fern Grows In Where the Red Fern Grows, the story is told of how young Billy has worked so hard to save up, buy, and then train his dogs. Billy has trained his dogs so well that his grandfather believes that he is good enough to be entered into a hunting contest. He asks billy what he thinks of this idea, and Billy is very excited. When Billy tells his grandpa that he wants to be entered in the contest, his grandpa has a very emotional reaction described by Wilson Rawls through a simile. Wilson Rawls uses the simile "Grandpa flew out of gear like a model–T Ford" to describe how excited Billy's grandfather was about the contest. Wilson does this by saying that Grandpa lost control of his emotions, just like how a Model–T ford can lose control from the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Theme Of Persistence In Where The Red Fern Grows The great physician George Sheehan once said, "Success means having the courage, the determination, and the will to become the person you believe you were meant to be." Sheehan meant in this quote that you can do anything if you are willing to use your willpower and energy to do so. This leads to the theme shown in Where the Red Fern Grows by Mr.Rawls. In the development of the book Where the Red Fern Grows the main theme persistence will lead to your own success is shown strongly throughout. To demonstrate the means of how Rawls showed the previously stated theme we shall start from the beginning. Persistence can be seen through the use of time with determination and purpose. "A year passed. I was twelve. I was over the halfway ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Billy was loyal, he was loyal to his idea of having two dogs at the start of this tale and now he's being loyal to listen to his promise with his dogs. He's making sure that he does what he says. In this way he is always doing his best or as the theme suggests being persistent to following through with his word. Even though his arms and back felt horrible he kept going and even with the questioning of his father he didn't back down. This ties into persistence because persistence means the following of a man's(or woman) thoughts or ideas. Billy felt that he must complete the chopping of the tree even though his dad told him time and time again. He knew that he had to persist his way through. This is yet only one of the many times Rawls shows the true theme of this book. Subsequently, the theme is shown again as the story continues on. Here Grandpa shows his determination to getting Billy in a hunting contest.. " 'Billy,' he said, 'it takes some doing to have a set of dogs entered in this hunt. I've been working on this for months. I've written letters on top of letters. I've even had several good friends in town helping me. You see, I've kept a record of all the coons your dogs have caught, and believe me, their catch is up there with the best of them' " (Rawls 157). In this example, Rawls proves not just the main character, Billy, but Grandpa also shows persistence through hard work, showing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Examples Of Determination In Where The Red Fern Grows Colin Powell once said, "A dream doesn't become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work." A character is revealed through hard work and most importantly, determination. "Determination is the key to a goal" is what is shown throughout the book, Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls. Billy (the main character) is a determined to reach all goals that will take hard work, but a lot of determination. Determination is shown through all chapters. One time Billy shows determination is on paged 18–19 in the first few chapters. Billy's character was determined to earn money to get two coonhounds when his father refused to get him the dogs. Billy had to earn $50 dollars in order for him to get the two coonhounds that were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On pages 131–133, Billy was determined to save Little Ann and Old Dan from the water. Little Ann went into the water to save Old Dan from the water. Little Ann was lucky to save Old Dan from the water – but was luckless to save herself. Billy couldn't hear Little Ann in the water, but could hear Old Dan in the large sycamore that had fallen in the river. His determination was brought on by fear of his dogs, Little Ann and Old Dan. Billy came as fast as he could and turned on his lanter to see better. "If she gets down in that old tree top, she'll drown." is what billy said to rubin while they were panicking about Little Ann when she was in trouble in the water. Little Ann made it out fairly safe. She saw the ghost coon in the distance. Little Ann went chasing after the ghost coon. The coon got his name by disappearing out of nowhere when when he gets tired. Billy was determined to catch the ghost coon, and this might be his chance. He saw that Little Ann was 15 feet behind the ghost coon and Old Dan was 25 yards behind Little Ann. Billy was very determined that he thought that this would be the time to whoop his dogs. They finally caught the ghost coon! This was a very big goal that took hard work and determination for not only the dogs, but Billy too. Billy trained them and motivated them to catch the ghost ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Where the Red Fern Grows Where the Red Fern Grows by Fgosal Where the Red Fern Grows tells about a man named Billy Colman, whose mind drifted away back on his boyhood memories when he got his dogs. The young Billy was a boy who wanted two coon hunting dogs of his own more than anything in the world. He worked very hard by selling wares and saved money to pursue his dreams. After two years, he finally had enough money for two dogs. Billy made a difficult journey to get his dogs. He loved his dogs very much and spent almost a whole time to train his dogs. Eventhough there were many problems came to him and his dogs, they could passed them. This strong bonds between them finally reached the climax when Billy joined the coon hunting championship and won it. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Second, in the book Little Ann was known to be smarter than Old Dan, but in the movie they looked alike and had no difference from their appearance and characters. Third, the book tells about how Billy caught the first coon to train his dogs, while the movie did not show such an action. The next difference is the chapter 11 of the book tells about Little Ann who almost got drowned in the icy water and Billy could save her owing to his old lantern, but we couldn't see it in the movie. Another different thing is when Billy and The Pritchards' boys, Rainie and Rubin, had a bet to tree the ghost coon. The book mentions that they betted two dollars for it, but 5 dollars in the movie. It is said in the book how Little Ann won the best looking hound contest, but the process didn't appear in the movie. The last thing is in the book Billy got 4 coons, so he could win the contest, while in the movie it is said that Billy didn't win the championship but he was given the title by Mr. Bellington, the one who won the match. Both the novel and the movie have the strengths and weaknesses. In my opinion, it is more clearly explained about the strong bonds between Billy and his dogs in the book than in the movie. I can really understand how much Billy loved his dogs, and the expression of love was more in the book than in the movie. The book gives more detailed information than the movie. • 7. Short Story Of 'Where The Red Fern Grows' A story about an adventurous kid & his hounds – hunting, winning competitions and facing death In the beginning of the story "Where The Red Fern Grows" a boy named Billy saw a group of dogs fighting on the street. Billy stopped the dogs from fighting and noticed a red hound all beat up. He took the hound home, fed him, washed him, and released him. This made him remember his old days of owning a hound. When Billy was 10 he wanted two hunting hounds but his family couldn't afford it. Billy had a sickness called puppy love so he couldn't help asking for puppies. One day he saved and worked for his money to get two puppy hounds. He named the dogs Old Dan and Little Ann. Billy and his dogs had so many adventures of hunting racoons. Billy once caught a ghost racoon that has never been caught before all thanks to his dogs. Billy's dogs help him become a coon hunting expert! The dogs would never let a coon go even if it was a stormy night. Old Dan and Little Ann were Billy's best friends. They would always stick together and never leave each other. One day Billy's grandfather signed him up for a racoon hunting competition. Billy was super excited and his dogs were too. Papa, grandpa, and the hounds all went hunting with Billy. This quote is saying that you can't achieve a goal without trying. In the book, Where the Red Fern Grows, the author, Wilson Rawls, shows the theme as hard work pays off. From chapter 5 in the story it says "A warm puppy tongue caressed my sore foot." This Shows that he is a hard worker through the fact that his foot is sore from walking so long. This ties back to the theme because he spent so much effort and energy walking all the way to get his dogs. This is the first example of the big theme of the story. • 9. Analysis Of Where The Red Fern Grows "Cherish these moments – tomorrow they'll be memories" ,pinterest said and has a deep meaning to the story Where the Red Fern Grows. In the story Where the Red Fern Grows the theme is to cherish those close to you before it's too late. The story is also a good lesson to learn because you never know when someone vital to your life may die so cherish them while you have them. This quote from pinterest fits the theme of the story because when Old Dan and Little Ann almost died Billy felt like he should've loved them more when they were alive. Without that time in the story the story would be completely different. This is a wise quote because when Billy got his dogs after working so hard to get them he knew that once he got the dogs he would remember how he got his dogs forever. That was one of the most important parts in the story and without them the story would be different. Since the part is in the story now the part makes a huge impact on the book and that is why that supports my quote and theme. In the story there were several moments that Billy would remember for the rest of his life . Billy had multiple lessons he had learned through the course of his life so far, and there will still be many more lessons to come. There are other pieces to this story that are important to the story. There is one part in the story where Little Ann and Old Dan nearly died from the winter storm. Without that time in the story the story would have changed dramatically. Who knows whether ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some of the differences are noticeable and some are more subtle, however I found that there were more similarities than differences. The similarities made it easy to relate the book to the movie. And the differences kept me interested in both. The book Where The Red Fern Grows is mainly about a young boy by the name of Billy, that hopes and prays for a pair of hunting coons. So he works hard and saves enough money to buy a pair to hunt with. After buying the coons he spent many hours teaching them to hunt together. After learning the basics of hunting Billy and his grandfather made a bet with two troublemaker kids. They were known as the Pritchard twins. The bet was that Billy's coons couldn't tree the ghost coon. • 16. Summary Of Where The Red Fern Grows Two dogs, and one of the happiest little boys I have ever read about, Billy couldn't be sad for more than ten minutes. And this is what brings me to believe that Wilson Rawls explores the idea in Where the Red Fern Grows that hard work could bring you to a much happier and satisfying life. For the first example, it is when Billy worked for his two dogs. Billy worked for two years to get Little Ann and Old Dan. When he first started, it was difficult. He most likely thought he wouldn't be able to do it. But when he did, he was shocked, but also happy. And when he got those dogs, he cried. And he even said himself that he was the most elated boy in the world. My second example is when he caught his first raccoon with Old Dan and Little Ann. It was the beginning of the hunting season. And his mom let him go hunting. When he took the dogs out, they found the smell of a raccoon. At first, it was hard to catch the raccoon, because Little Ann and Old Dan wouldn't go across a river. But he kept pushing and saying they could do it. They finally did, and when him and his dad were skinning the raccoon, Billy couldn't have been more proud and happy of him and his dogs. ... • 21. Where The Red Fern Grows Character Analysis There is a saying, "a dog is a man's' best friend". In the book Where The Red Fern Grows,by Wilson Rawls, Billy Coleman is a young boy who wants nothing other than two Redbone coonhounds and to hunt in the Ozark Mountains with them. Through his determination, he works up money buy the pups, but he is faced with many struggles along the road. His determination, the will power and strong heart to make it through the struggles, made him the boy he is now. Over all, Billy Coleman and his dogs face many conflicts throughout the book, but he stays determined to make it through. One of Billy's biggest conflicts is when his dogs tree a coon in a very large tree. Bill knows this tree as "the big tree", the one that is impossible to climb let alone cut down. As said on pg 78 of Where The Red Fern Grows, "I know he's there," I said, "but there's nothing I can do. I can't climb it. Why it's sixty feet up to the first limb and it would take me a month to cut it down."(Rawls) Billy struggles with being able to climb the tree because he feels that he will not be able to because it is so high up. Also, he knows that it would be super hard to cut the tree down. Though he struggles he pulls through and is determined to get the coon. "Gritting my teeth...I don't care how big you are, I'm not going to let my dogs down...I'm going to cut you down. I read it at about age ten, and I have lost count of how many times I read it since. It was a period in my life when childhood was nearly over, but adolescence had not yet set in, and it was a time when animals were my greatest love. Where the Red Fern Grows is a novel about a young boy and his two dogs, but to an animal–lover, it is much more. As a child I read Where the Red Fern Grows for its adventures and the profound love Billy has for his two dogs. Billy and his dogs go hunting every night and play in the river during the day. Since I felt I was somewhat of a tomboy, and had two dogs of my own, this greatly appealed to me. The suspense I felt whenever the dogs treed a coon, or the time Grandpa was lost in the blizzard and the dogs found him, never ceased each time I read the book. As I re–read it now, however, I can see that there are many more factors that appealed to me, but I did not realize it at the time. This is a book about love –– not only human love for an animal, but the love of a parent for a child, a man for his home, and a special love between two animals. Billy's family is extremely close–knit. His mother teaches Billy and his two sisters to read and write because the school is too far away, and when he turns eleven. Billy's father lets him help out in the fields. To complete the happy nest. Grandpa lives right down the road, and has the family over every Sunday afternoon for supper. The Grogans even attempted to medicate Marley to help him be less rambunctious. Despite all of Marley's craziness and chaos, the Grogan family recognized his heart was pure. "When I came up to the tree I thought Little Ann had treed Old Dan. She was sitting on her haunches staring up and bawling the tree bark. There, a good fifteen feet from the ground, with his hind legs planted firmly in the center of a big limb, and his front feet against the trunk of the tree, stood Old Dan, bawling for all he was worth"(Rawls 109). Old Dan is so obsessed with catching the coons that he would jump out of the tree to catch it even if he died. Little Ann is nervous at this point so she decided to call to Billy for help, and even after Billy got older and down from the tree he started to climb back up. Little Ann saw Old Dan get sucked into a muskrat done so she was smart enough to call for Billy and Billy didn't know what was going on she started to dig where she saw Old Dan go under. "She was digging in a small hole about the size of a big apple. It was the air hole for a muskrat den. I pulled Little Ann away from the hole, knelt down, and put my ear to it. I could hear something, and feel a vibration in the ground. It was an eerie sound and seemed to be coming from far away. I listened. Finally I understood what the noise was. It was the voice of Old Dan"(Rawls 107). After she dug the beginning of the hole Billy started to hear the bawl of Old Dan underground and Billy was able to pull Old Dan out. Her cunning ability to almost be able to communicate with Billy allowed her to show Billy that Old Dan was stuck underground. • 27. Where The Red Fern Grows Book Analysis Where The Red Fern Grows is an entertaining and sad story about a boy and his dogs. It was made into a book and a movie. Of course there were differences and similarities. The story was the same over all. This essay will state my thoughts on the book and the movie. I really enjoyed the book. I think it had more detail than the movie. It was also more sad than the movie. I think it was more sad because it had more detail and we got to know the characters more. It is probably one of my favorite books. I also liked the movie. But, I think it skipped some of the key details. Also, if someone was only watching the movie and not reading the book they would not get very attached to the characters. Overall I think the movie did a good job at bringing ... The tale is moving, in a sense, because it is centered around a boy, his dogs, and their mutual love for each other. It is also about how Billy hunts and skins raccoons with his dogs for fun, but if that is something you can overlook, then so be it. Billy, being the main character, has many good and bad points, and is overall a good person. In the book "Where the Red Fern Grows", the main character Billy wants two coon hounds, but he has to pay for them himself, so he saves for two years to get his dream hounds. An occurrence of this is when Billy was attacked by a mountain lion. Though the love she had for Billy was strong already, after she fought the mountain lion with him and Old Dan, their bond became one of such powerful love that a background character said, "People have been trying to understand dogs since the beginning of time. One never knows what they'll do. You can read every day where a dog saved the life of a drowning child, or lay down his life for his master. Some people call this loyalty. I don't. I may be wrong, but I call it love. The deepest kind of love." The point here is that the dogs didn't have this love in the beginning. They earned it through Billy and the dogs' hard work. Another instance of love is when Old Dan was given two biscuits. Old Dan and Little Ann had killed many coons at this point, always working together. Old Dan sniffed the biscuits, then picked them up in his mouth and brought them to Little Ann. Then, they each ate one of the biscuits at the same time. This shows how the dogs become close through their partnership in war, so to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
