Liberal Arts-Based College Education Advantages
In an era of ever–increasing costs of college expenses, concerned parents and stressed high school
students face one crucial decision with an important tradeoff to consider: whether or not the alleged
intellectual and personal benefits of a liberal arts–based college education substantially outweigh the
overarching societal stigma that such a degree is obsolete and the financial burden of the extensive
student loan debts that many families may incur as a result of this type of education. For these
families and their minds spinning with unanswered questions, Fareed Zakaria takes the complicated
matter and confronts it head–on, arguing that a liberal arts–educated population is a necessity for the
success of both the individuals themselves and

Setting Tuition and Financial Aid
Setting Tuition and Financial Aid
Managerial Economics
09/15/2013
The idea behind "applicants had apparently concluded that if the college cost more, it must be
better" (Brickley, Smith, & Zimmerman, 2009) is still a premise that society perceived as
accurate but the financial problem behind this idea is if students are not receiving the help needed
with a financial aid increase, it feels that this idea will not hold up very much longer.
Susan's analysis that the increase in tuition fee is likely to increase in the student enrollment and
therefore would be helpful in solving the school's financial problem is absolutely incorrect.
Financial aid is an important factor when students are thinking about applying for a college. ... Show

The following result associated with increase in the demand for enrolment in other colleges has
convinced the president of Liberal Arts College that increasing tuition fees would lead to an increase
in the quantity demanded. But Susan's analysis is not accurate and the increase in enrollment along
with increase in tuition fee is not because demand curve is upward sloping but because there is just
an increase in demand for enrolment in these prestige colleges. Hence Susan's analysis and
suggestion of increasing the tuition fee and decreasing financial aid should not be accepted.
A college should be recognized by its education and academic levels and not by its costs of
attendance. Susan wants to increase prices to increase revenue and not because the college is
investing on better academic resources and faculty staff. If the college wants to increase total
revenue, then they need to focus on improving the quality of education by having a better faculty
staff and study environment, which ultimately may lead to better job opportunities for student after
graduation.

The James Irvine Foundation : An Impressive Self...
The James Irvine Foundation, through its higher education programs, has provided grants to about
30 private colleges in California to support diversity, and, after the decline of minority student
enrollment in the late 1990s on some campuses, the foundation began to ask more about how the
recipients of the grants dealt with diversity. The recipient colleges were asked to examine their
history and data regarding diversity at their institution and identify their strengths and weaknesses.
The results of this inquiry saw some schools provide an impressive self–assessment with focus on
key issues and development of ways to progress and be better. Other institutions had a difficult time
with the inquiry, while others just listed all the diversity–related activities their schools had on
campus, including the addition of a diversity committee, new courses added to the curriculum, and
the hiring of an African American admissions officer. All examples of what schools listed as
evidence of their commitment and progression towards diversity (Shireman, 2003). To help schools
provide a good self–assessment on diversity Robert Shireman (2003) suggested 10 poignant
questions colleges and universities need to ask when reporting their progress on diversity. The first
question is to ask how the institution defines diversity and if their definition has a focus on gender,
sexual orientation, religion, disability and other factors? The reason for the added focus is because,
by just focusing on

Liberal Arts Education : The Ideas Of A Liberal Arts College
Every year, millions of high school seniors make a decision on where they want to attend college.
One of the ideas these students have to consider is if they want to attend a vocational college or a
liberal arts college. While some students feel very strongly one way or another, many students don't
even know what a liberal arts education is. For a Christian liberal arts college, their answer should
be simple. Jeffry C. Davis once said in his book Liberal Arts for the Christian Life that "Rightly
understood, the pursuit of Christ is the supreme liberal art–the fundamental discipline that sets us
free." (Davis 23) I believe that Davis is right on target with this quote, that anyone who is seeking
true and complete freedom should be seeking Jesus Christ.
But still, what is a "liberal arts" education? There's no one clear–cut answer to that question, and
there's still debate on what the ideal liberal arts education looks like. For the purpose of this essay,
I'd like to use the definition that was originally used for liberal arts. In the same book as before,
Davis states that
Together, these seven studies became what the Roman orator and statesman Cicero first described as
the artes liberales, a term relatively understood in the first century BCE as "the academic disciplines
for freedom." The arts proved to be freeing or liberal (a word that comes from the Latin liber,
meaning "free person")... (Davis 27)
Freedom. That was the goal of having a rounded, liberal arts education.

Why I Am A Liberal Arts Education
A liberal arts education encourages freedom by allowing students to grow individually and
academically. Before I read the summer reading packet, I did not know this. By reading the packet, I
understand what it means to be liberally educated at Loras College. The freedom and growth that I
will experience through the liberal arts at Loras will allow me to become better–rounded as an
individual. Because of this, I will have learned how to be a critical thinker and learner, see the whole
picture of why I am learning what I am learning, and connect and use what I have learned to other
aspects of life. I believe that through the liberal arts I will learn how see deeper into what I have
learned, know the true reason of why I am learning what I am learning, expanding my knowledge by
having a well–rounded education, and use that in real–world situations to better myself and society.
Throughout my educational experience, I have been presented with different educational and social
challenges that I have had to overcome to prepare me for where I am at now at Loras College. My
family has moved to different towns and school districts several times during my 13 years of
education. We moved because of my father's occupations in school administration. By starting as a
teacher then moving up the ranks to being a principal, and eventually becoming a superintendent,
my father has shown me the true meaning of achieving a goal and understanding why my family is
where we are at today in

A Career : The Career Of Acting As A Career
As a person who considers themselves creative and fun, being an actor seems quite interesting. My
job title would be actor/performer. Actors express various ideas and portray many characters from
very different backgrounds, and they try to interpret the writer's script in a way that entertains or
informs the audience ("Summary"). I chose acting as my career because as a kid I always thought
acting was interesting and enjoyable. I tend to be a very verbose person at times so it is the perfect
career for me. It is important, however, to understand the education or training requirements, skills
or talents needed, salary and benefits offered, and the duties for a particular career when making this
decision. The job is like a gypsy. You don't stay in one place. The work environment could range
anywhere from parks, to theaters, and to various studios ("Summary"). Actors also don't have set
work hours because it depends on how big the project is and how much practice is needed. There
isn't a lot that goes into acting, but that doesn't mean that it is an easy job. They do not provide a
specific training class because the training is long–term. That means that you get better the more you
practice and the more you try to improve. Your day consists of auditions, reading and going over
scripts, and performing. Some other duties you do are researching your character's traits, discussing
the roles with the cast, and memorizing all your cues and lines. Your average day is just practice

Are Too Many People Going To College?
In the article "Are Too Many People Going To College," Charles Murray claims that a lot of
colleges are filled with students that lack certain skills and qualities that are needed for the college
level. Murray goes on to say that not all students learn at the same level, but he still believes there
are ways for lower ability students to be successful in college it taught better throughout K–8 and
high school. Charles Murray wants all students to learn the importance of all subjects taught at
college. However, he believes these students should be taught more in high school in order to be
more prepared for college. Murray certainly expresses how important K–8 and high school can be
when stating, "More people should be getting the basics of a liberal education. But for most
students, the places to provide those basics are elementary and middle school." Murray argues that
core knowledge is very important to reading and writing comprehension, stating that familiarity of
these concepts is important when going to college. He believes K–8 is the perfect time to teach the
core knowledge, which should raise the students effort right away in elementary school. Murray
wants kids to be taught more throughout kindergarten and eighth grade, and believes students in
high school should learn by surveys and classes that are just slightly below college level courses.

Liberal Arts College Advantages
A Liberal Arts college is common among my vocabulary as that's the type of college I attend, but I
didn't specifically understand what in fact a Liberal Arts college was until now. Most think college is
college no matter where you go, but frankly that's as far off base as you can get. Most colleges offer
specific degrees or they are known for specific areas of field work. For example Texas A&M is
mainly known for its veterinary field, Texas Tech is going to be where you find your engineer
students and Liberal Arts colleges offer a wide range of selections. They are often known for more
than being good at just one thing. While in my opinion Liberal Arts is a great choice not everyone
agrees So besides Liberal Arts being a more broad range of studies what else makes it so great? ...

I walked around toured and saw the girl who directed my tour at orientation and she remembered
my name. That made me feel like I was someone not another person thinking about coming to the
school. I loved the fact that the classes are small, it leaves more opportunities for discussions and
really getting to know everyone. The utmost favorite part would have to be the fact that Houston
Baptist is centered around God. People think you have to be Christian to attend, but that's not the
case. Christianity paved the way for all types of studies. A great example is in an Christianity is
Central to Western Values and Culture by Kevin Donnelly he quotes an American academic named
Thomas E. Woods it states "Western civilization stands indebted to the church for the university
system, charitable work, international law, the sciences, important legal principles and much else

going to be a factor knowingly or unknowingly. Although I chose this school based on a vast amount

Introduction
In 2000, the Board of Ursinus College, raised its tuition from $19,331 to $23,460. This turned out to
be a 17.6% increase. Surprisingly, the tuition increase proved to be a positive change for Ursinus
College. The college received more than 200 applicants than its previous year (Brickley, Smith and
Zimmerman, 2009, p. 110). Other regional institutions such as University of Notre Dame, Bryn
Mawr College and Rice University also experienced a similar trend once they increased their tuition
rates (Brickley, Smith and Zimmerman, 2009, p. 110). The president of Ursinus College deduced
that the tuition increase affected enrollment rate (increased enrollment). She simply stated that
"people don't want cheap" (Brickley, Smith and Zimmerman, 2009, p. 110). Today, Susan Hansen,
Admissions Director of East Liberal Arts College, wishes to increase tuition and reduce financial aid
available to students (Brickley, Smith and Zimmerman, 2009, p. 110). Moreover, she has expressed
that "increasing tuition and reducing the amount of financial aid will solve the schools financial
problems" (Brickley, Smith and Zimmerman, 2009, p. 110). This will be done by "increasing an
effective tuition from $15,000 to $25,000" (Brickley et al., 2009). She also projects that the tuition
increase enrollment from 400 to 600 students (Brickley, Smith and Zimmerman,

Why College Matters to God Essay
1. The author (Ostrander) emphasizes that students should not stress out over choosing a major. He
tells us that what one majors in is less important than the overall qualities, knowledge base, and the
skills that one develops. Ostrander also points out that a major is much less important than the skills
that people gain by using a quote from an executive, "I look for people who take accountability,
responsibility and are good team people over anything else. I can teach the technical."
2. Going to a liberal arts college is like training for the Olympics without knowing what event you
are going to participate in. You have to make sure that you are the best you can be in every way. You
would have to be a great runner, swimmer and even ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
5. The Biblical creation story applies to our lives at college. By studying his creation we grow to
know God better and we learn to live Godly lives by looking at what he created us to do. Just like
atheistic scientists James Watson and Francis Crick discovered DNA by studying the creation not
the Bible we can learn a lot about God and ourselves by not just reading the Bible, but also taking
time to study the creation.
6. One of the ways Adam and Eve's sin in the Garden of Eden effects higher education according to
Rick Orstander is because of the fall, Christians have to approach academic life with a healthy dose
of uncertainty. Because of the fall, we know that people can be selfish, corrupt, mistaken and self–
deluded even when they are trying to do good. With this knowledge we need to apply a
"hermeneutics of suspicion" which means that we recognize that each person has some sort of
biased and all want to be correct. So as Christians we should approach any truth claim with both
generosity and suspicion no matter who the truth claim comes from.
7. Christian college education equips us to play a role in redeeming God's creation to the way it was
supposed to be. By studying the word of God and applying it to every aspect of our lives we are
working hard to bring ourselves back to what God intended us to be. Ostrander points out that part
of our task as cultural beings is to redeem

College Facilites for Division III Athletics Essay
Division III athletics have become more then high school athletes holding onto a dream and
competing at the non–scholarship level of the National collegiate athletic association. From 2004 to
2012 the average cost of having a division III athletics program has gone up 200% (Fulks, 2013).
From 2004 until 2012 the average cost per athlete has also gone up, from $3,500 to $5,800. This
money does not even touch the levels that are being spent in Division I, but Division III athletics are
on an upward trend of spending. The commitment to athletics in Division III has lead to money
being spent on new sports and recreation facilities. So much so that it's been put to question if there

The point of facilities has been to give the "wow" factor to visiting prospects. In almost all cases the
facilities at a college will be better then the high school or junior college the student athlete is
coming from. It is also believed that having better facilities will directly correlate with recruiting
success, especially against rival colleges. The belief that new facilities bring in better recruits was
tested by the research into the subject. Although new facilities did attract more initial interest from
recruits (Schneider, 2012) the final decision about which school to attend came down to other
different factors. In the study of "The impact of Athletic Faculties on the Recruitment of Student
Athletes" college athletic prospects were asked why they choose the college they did. With factors
such as playing time, location, tradition, education, facilities, teammates, and school color to name a
few, the results were as follows. Non–Scholarship athletes that had no option to receive finical aid
from the school they planned on attending, like the ones in division III, had top five factors of 1)
playing time, 2) social life, 3) Education, 4) Location and 5) Financial Aid. Not until after the top
ten did weight room and locker rooms came into effect. In another study it was shown that
scholarship athletes in Division I were motivated by completion and achievement, while in division
III the main motivator to play was the "experience" or the social

Why I Want to Attend Westmont College Essay
Westmont College
Westmont College is a small, liberal arts college located in the beautiful Santa Barbara, California.
The college only offers bachelor's degrees. Westmont is a standard four year college. They are
nondenominational and encourage their students to live out a Christian life. They supply Christian–
based studies. An interesting fact is that 78% of financial needs are met! Serious crime (per 1000
students per year) is a shocking 17.06, drug or weapon incidents are 2.22, and alcohol encounters
are 14.83. Santa Barbara is considered a fairly safe place so seeing these statistics is quite

You can be awarded athletic scholarships as well as merit scholarships. You can be rewarded talent–

music. For first year graduates they have special academic scholarships. There is the Dean's that
gives you $10,000, Provost's that gives you $13,000, President's that gives you $15,000, and the
most special and competitive scholarship is the Monroe scholarship it pays your whole tuition.
Westmont has large selection of majors totaling up to forty–five. They have a pre–nursing program
and a pre–veterinary program, which I am interested in. I really like that Westmont has so many
choices to get a degree in. The college is extremely small with 1,346 students, 337 of which are
freshman. Since the school is so small the student to teacher ratio is 11:1. I really enjoy this statistic,
since I find most my help comes from conversing with my teachers to learn about the subject more
deeply. Having more one–on–one time with the professors' means any terms that you do not
understand you can go over them with your professor privately to get a better understanding! The
small college does not lack in sports. They have twelve league sports and eleven club sports.

INTRODUCTION The name of the study article that I will be analyzing is Romans 12 Motivational
Gifts and College Professors: Implications for Job Satisfaction and Person–Job Fit which was
conducted by Jon C. Tomlinson and Bruce E. Winston. The primary goal of this study is to
determine if job satisfaction and job fit may be directly impacted by a college professor's abilities
and gifts as determined by the Romans 12 Motivational Gifts survey. Furthermore the study aims to
determine what cluster areas are consistent with successful college professors.
QUESTIONS ADDRESSED IN THE ARTICLE
Determine if the seven motivational gifts that Paul wrote about have any impact on job satisfaction
and job fit for college professors
Determine if gender has any impact on the motivational gifts of college professors
Determine if gender has any impact on job satisfaction and job fit of college professors
Determine if tenure has any impact on motivational gifts of college professors

Liberal Arts Should Be Taught In College Essay
What is Being Taught in College?
What should colleges be teaching, is a question that many people are wanting an answer to. Should
colleges be teaching students liberal arts or should they just let liberal arts classes slip away? This a
controversy between students on every college campus. It is important to the students, because they
want what is best for themselves during college. I believe that students need to be taught liberal arts
to help better their learning abilities. In my own experience, I have learned that liberal arts classes
may be frustrating, but in the long run they have really helped to develop a better grasp on general
education. Liberal arts classes are a good way to begin college, instead of just jumping right in to a
major.

Students will still learn the same way, whether there are a lot of students or a little. Smaller class
size do not make a student perform better, that is up to the student, not the class size. Students can
learn in any type of environment; class size does not matter when it comes to a students learning
ability. Learning is not about where the knowledge is learned, it is about how it is learned and if a
student is willing to learn it. Some might also oppose that colleges should not make students take
liberal arts classes. Liberal arts classes do not always help a student develop better learning skills.
Some liberal arts classes are not even relevant to a students major. Having to take classes that are
not relevant to a student can be overwhelming and frustrating for them. It is too expensive for them
to have to pay for classes that are not relevant to their major. Students should be able to choose what

The New Liberal Arts, By Sanford J. Ungar And Robert Reich...
To discuss the value of liberal education, there should be a mutual understanding that investing in
college means to invest in oneself. Furthermore, while some consider this investment to be a critical
stepping stone to success, others dismiss it, explaining that school simply cannot prepare someone
for the "real world." Sanford J. Ungar and Robert Reich explore both of these subjective values in
their essays "The New Liberal Arts" and "College is a Ludicrous Waste of Money." Ungar, the
president of Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland, discusses why a liberal education should be
sought after; he does so by introducing common misconceptions about liberal arts and, using
argumentative persuasion, proves their insignificance. On the other hand, Reich, the former
secretary of labor, argues against the conventional belief of college being the only road to financial
wellbeing; rather, he explains why a two–year education may better accommodate many college
students, especially those in need of immediate work or those that simply cannot afford a four–year
education. In all, although both Reich and Ungar generally discuss liberal education, their
perspectives differ when it comes to its practicality in the current economy. Also, to express their
different views about liberal arts, the authors use contrasting tones to present their ideas to different
intended audiences. In order to analyze the given arguments, one must identify the intended
audiences. Ungar explores many ideas,

The tuition dependency ratio, which represents the reliance of the institution on revenue generated
from tuition, is relatively small for Allegheny College as compared to Colgate University. The ratios
of 49% and 51% for Allegheny College and Colgate University respectably, show a well–balanced
dependence on tuition. It can be inferred that financial downturns and occasional drop in student
enrollment would not severely preclude operations.
With a strong student demand reflecting in the enrollment figures, we find the relatively high tuition
discount ratio of 44% belonging to Allegheny College concerning. As compared to 31% of tuition
discount provided by Colgate University, Allegheny College's higher percentage reflects that they
are giving out many scholarships and aid from their earned revenue in order to attracted applicants.
Colgate University, on the other hand, establishes itself as a reputable brand and does not need to
rely as heavily on offering scholarships to students in order to keep the student demand high.
Scope of Operations An analysis of operating performance shows the institution's ability to maintain
a healthy financial performance in the long run. For investors, operating margin is one of the most
important indicators of security. The operating margin for Allegheny College is 9.79% as compared
to 0.1% for Colgate University. This ratio shows that amount of operating surplus as a fraction of the

making the decision of what college you are going to attend. But before you can; you find out this is

of the programs, within their respective colleges, and many proud alums that feel deeply that either
is the top school, but what they are blind to is all the similarities that also go along with their
beloved schools. Even though there are differences between the two rival music colleges, the have
many similarities that appeal to prospective students. Wartburg College is nestled in the small Iowa

Benefits Of Liberal Arts Education
The way children are educated early on has a direct influence on their development. There are two
primary forms of education that children are exposed to, the first being liberal arts. In a liberal arts
education the primary subjects taught are, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and formal
sciences. The goal of a liberal arts education is to prepare the student to deal with complexity,
diversity, and change to assist in their adaption to the world later on. The second form of education
is STEM, standing for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. STEM education focuses
more on the analytical side of the school system with not as much thought given to the social and
artistic side as liberal arts does. STEM chooses to integrate science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics in a practical way with emphasis on real–world application. The more beneficial of the
two is liberal arts because it exposes students to a more diverse education, it is affordable, and it
helps students gain an awareness of cultural diversity and varied perspectives. One of the
advantages found through a liberal arts education is that it exposes students to more diverse way of
learning. Liberal arts covers general areas of study which includes a variety of subjects such as,
humanities, social sciences, creative arts, and sciences. This is done without the intent of preparing
students for a specific field of work, but to instead equip them with an invaluable set of skills to

The Art Of Liberal Arts
The Art of Liberal Arts
"I can't go to a liberal–arts college. My parents are conservatives!" I told my eighth grade teacher.
He laughed and then went on to explain what a liberal–arts college actually is. Like many others, I
believed a common misperception about the liberal–arts. In "The New Liberal Arts" by Sanford J.
Ungar, the writer explains wrong ideas about the liberal–arts to a college–based audience including
students, professors, and administration. He explains the importance and relevance of a liberal–arts
education. Ungar claims that it is a better investment than narrow, specific technical training because
it prepares students for career placement by giving them skills in communicating effectively,
thinking creatively, and understanding comprehensively. I agree with Ungar and I think he
successfully explains the reasons why liberal arts are important and relevant in today's society.
First, the logic of the article focuses on why students should have a balanced, well–rounded
understanding of the world to be successful in life rather than having a career–based education that
is only focused on one aspect. There were no obvious fallacies found in Ungar's argument beyond
the generalization about costs for all colleges thus not focusing primarily on the financial situation.
Additionally, Ungar uses a 2009 survey for the Association of American Colleges and Universities
to reveal that "more than three–quarters of our nation's employers recommend that college–bound

Good Education Begins With Individuality
Good Education Begins with Individuality
Higher education is the crucial base for all the people who desire to further their education. An ideal
higher education should be able to open one's horizon as well as secure their hopes and dreams for
the future. An incoming freshman applies to multiple colleges based on different qualities each
university has. Some would mention quality books or well trained professors. Others would lean
more towards the aspect of once in a lifetime opportunities that only college can provide. The
perfect college environment is one with activities, lifetime opportunities, and a cultural
environment.

believe people who have no interest in fashion would pick it up to discover the content of this
catalog. The catalog includes many photographs in vibrant colors, which feature people from
different races. From this, we can conclude that the college has a diversity of people coming from
different cultures, which is one of the criteria that every ideal college should offer. The pictures from
the catalog also feature the campus life, students' products, meetings and the facilities of The
Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. Learning from the visual aids provided by the

college students always look for when they choose their colleges. After reviewing the catalog from

Liberal Arts Education Vs Liberal Education
Liberal education consists in reading and analyzing complex intellectual material every day, this
kind of education is intellectually too demanding for most young people and only a few percentiles
are indeed good at it, however, a large proportion of people who are able to assimilate a liberal
education have no interest in doing so. Liberal arts education has been criticized due to
misperceptions by students, society, and media. Ungar points out seven misperceptions about
Liberal arts education and also provides a response for each one of them. Students can make a living
with a liberal–arts college degree by finding a job easily in the future, the field of study in liberal
arts education is broader, and it is more affordable.
After students graduate from a liberal arts college, they usually obtain a job within a short period of
time. Although a misconception claims that "College graduates are finding it harder to get good jobs
with liberal–arts degrees" (192), Ungar states that employers are in fact, looking ... Show more

People believe that "The cost of American higher education is spiraling out of control..." (196),
which in fact, is a significant concern because economic issues are important when choosing a
university. The net cost of a small liberal–arts college can be lower than the net cost of a large public
university. For this reason, a small liberal–arts college is the best option. The advantage of a small
liberal–arts college goes beyond the net cost to the relation between students and professor, staff and
other students. Since it is smaller, students are able to rich their professors, to get to know them and
have a "sense of community" (196). "Close interaction between faculty member and

more secure and supported in an environment of family that a small college can

Personal Narrative: Entering A Liberal Arts College
Entering a Liberal Arts College I knew was different than that of other colleges, but I didn't fully
understand the difference. My mom attended BC, so I knew that there was going to be a lot of
classes I needed to take that would not involve my major. This was scary entering college because I
didn't know what to expect in these classes since they weren't my strong point. According to the
Bridgewater website about Academic Citizenship as a student I am supposed to, "Through the
Academic Citizenship program, BC is increasing conversations about a wide variety of issues.

perspectives. And prepare to be a better citizen of the global community". The first course ... Show

At BC I was blessed with a coach that belonged to a church that needed help setting up prior to the
services on Sunday. To help out with this work he would take a group of players each month to set
up. This allowed me to grow with my teammates, but also to meet new people. Also during my
freshman year I was able to help the community in a way I never had before. I was told about
helping at the concession stand at the local Bridgewater baseball fields. I knew this was beneficial
because it would give the parents a chance to watch their kids without worrying about the
concession stand. I was also able to meet new people and see the community that I was new too.
These examples are a few of the ways that Bridgewater has prepared me for the community. BC has
prepared me for both the academic part and the community part. The academic part was because I
was able to learn about the world today so that I can be a better member. It also has showed me how

This community I desire can only be described as "differing." Twice in my young life have I

Is Providence College A Liberal Arts College?
Providence College is a liberal arts college, which consists of roughly four thousand undergraduate
students, located in Providence, Rhode Island. One of the staples of the college has been the ability
to live off–campus on Eaton Street starting in a student's junior year. The attraction stems from most
of the party scene on the weekends being at these houses on the streets bordering the campus.
However, starting in the Fall of 2017, the school is implicating a new policy that juniors are required
to live on campus. While the school is attempting to reduce disturbances in the surrounding
community caused by partying college students, this housing restriction is only going to cause
further issues for Providence College, its students, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus, this ideology cannot be a rebuttal from the school as to why students should deal with the
space issue and understand the school's decision to push forward with the new off–campus policy
despite the lack of space.
Fortunately, this issue of on campus space that immediately followed the application selections and
choice to move juniors on campus is not an uncommon problem to have. Other schools' policies that
have developed from the same issue can be utilized or modified to fix the problem at Providence
College. For example, Boston College, a school which we heavily associate with and look to be on
the same level with regarding our academics, has a similar space issue. Demand for on campus
housing is greater than the number of beds the college has, thus students are allowed to live off
campus starting their sophomore year (bc.org). Most students live off campus their junior year and if
they wish to stay on campus all 4 years they must apply for additional housing, which is not
guaranteed. However, if students go off campus sophomore year then they must remain off junior
year as well. While on campus housing was previously granted for all students for all 4 years with
the assumption that some students will live off campus, the looming space issue that is going to
impact students in the fall of 2017, a version of Boston College's policy (let, or make, juniors and
seniors live off campus) should be an

The Liberal Arts Education Is Better Than A Education
Now that I am in college, I have pondered upon whether a liberal arts education is better than a
vocational education; a topic that did not cross my mind in high school. A liberal arts curriculum
includes the studies intended to primarily provide general knowledge such as language, philosophy,
literature, and abstract science and to develop general intellectual capacities, such as reason and
judgment, as opposed to professional or vocational skills (merriam–webster.com). As students
wanting to achieve a higher education, we have to think about what we want for ourselves. Either
you want to grow as an individual and obtain a major in whichever field you chose, or just learn
what best interests you. People have many misconceptions toward what the liberal arts are and how
they can benefit you. We often hear things like, "A liberal arts degree will not get you a real job." or
"A liberal arts degree is a luxury not a necessity." Although this is what the majority of the people
who are not aware about the actual facts say, this is not true. An examination of, The New Liberal
Arts by author Sanford J. Ungar, and Are Too Many People Going to College? by author Charles
Murray, will reveal to us why one gains more knowledge at a liberal arts school. Murray argues that
a liberal arts education is only for the elite, but I believe that they shouldn 't be the only ones to
attend because my vision of a liberal arts college is one where all students come in with the

Argumentative Essay On Liberal Arts Colleges
Recently, the job market has been very competitive especially for students straight out of college,
however students with a liberal arts background have a greater advantage as they are more appealing
to employers. There are hundreds of liberal arts colleges in the United States, however they are often
overlooked due to false perceptions regarding price. Liberal arts schools prepare students for the real
world by providing a well–rounded education, smaller class sizes that allow for more individualized
learning, and a unique college experience. Liberal arts schools aim to provide students with a wide
variety of knowledge instead of requiring them to specialize as freshman. General education classes
help set students up for a successful career path. By not specializing in a specific field taking general
education classes it allows students to see the different potential career fields. For example,

Advantage Of Liberal Arts College
For those who want to further their schooling in a way that focuses on undergraduate studies and
creating a well–rounded education a liberal arts college is the perfect opportunity to achieve a higher
education. Some of the oldest liberal arts colleges in the United States date back to the 1600s. There
are many advantages to studying at a liberal arts college. A liberal arts education can give students
the opportunity to have a smaller environment and a well–rounded education. The smaller
environment that a liberal arts college provides to students is very helpful for a successful college
experience. A smaller number of undergrad students enrolled into one's college translates to having
smaller class sizes. Jessica Velasco explains, "Average class sizes at liberal arts colleges are usually
less than 30 students" (Velasco, College Raptor). The transition from small high school classes to
college is easier if the college classes are similar in size. This is especially helpful for students who
have trouble focusing and learn best in smaller environments. It is easier to get help when necessary.
Hand in hand with smaller class sizes is close relationships with professors. Velasco illustrates,
"Classes, including introductory courses, are taught by professors at liberal arts colleges... because
each class is usually taught by a professor, this means they generally have the opportunity to spend
more quality time with their students, getting to know them, evaluating and critiquing their work
much more closely, and serving as mentors" (Velasco, College Raptor). At most universities lecture
classes have hundreds of students. At those institutions, it is nearly impossible to be on a first name
basis with the professors. With a large number of students, there is often no time to build
relationships. The small environment that liberal arts colleges pride themselves on allows easy
access to professors. They are able to answer questions and personally help their students. Finally,
many liberal arts colleges have many student activities to take part in. "Liberal arts colleges usually
have fewer student organizations and activities than larger universities, but participation tends to be
higher," Velasco writes. Time

Similarities Between College And University
The terms college and university originally had very similar meanings. Only with the passing of
centuries did university come to signify an educational institution composed of more than one
college. The word college means literally "union formed by law," or a group of people associated in
some common function. The ancient Roman craft guilds were called collegia. The closest parallel
today is the corporation, a business organization chartered by a government.
 During the Middle Ages students at the universities of Paris, Oxford, and Cambridge found it
convenient to rent houses and share expenses instead of living in private apartments. By the 13th
century these "houses of scholars" were becoming legally recognized corporate institutions. ... Show

When used in its modern sense as a place for advanced learning, it usually required the addition of
other words such as "masters and scholars." The term that was normally used to describe a legally
chartered school of teachers and students was studium generale, meaning a place of study open to
students from all parts. The universitas was a group of teachers or students (or perhaps both) within
the studium. A studium was quite similar to a guild in both origin and composition. The beginners
were essentially apprentices, called bachelors, while the teachers were the masters.
 The studium probably emerged when the bishop of a diocese gave a teacher permission to operate
a school other than the local cathedral or monastery school. It is likely that a license to teach was
granted to a master after a formal examination. The studium itself became a school that granted a
teaching license to its scholars after they completed a prescribed course of study and passed

Essay on The New Liberal Arts
Anh Pham
English 101
"The New Liberal Arts" is an article written by Sanford J. Ungar, who is a president of Goucher
College in Baltimore, Maryland. In the beginning of his article, Ungar wrote, "Hard economic times
inevitably bring scrutiny of all accepted ideals and institutions, and this time around the liberal arts
education has been especially hard hit." In other words, Ungar means that recent economic
recessions have made a huge impact on what people think of going for a liberal arts degree. In his
essay, Ungar lists seven misperceptions and how he reacts to them. The most common
misperception that Ungar identified is that liberal arts degrees are no longer affordable. The cost for
liberal arts education is very expensive while ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He wrote, "The career bandwagon seems to suggest that shortcuts are available to students that lead
directly to high–paying jobs–leaving out "frills" like learning how to write and speak well, how to
understand the nuances of literacy texts and scientific concepts, how to collaborate with others on
research" What he means by that is there is no shortcuts to a high–paying jobs. He also implies that
liberal arts education is the only right way to prepare an individual for their future career because it
equips ones with the abilities to write and speak formally, and understandings on scientific matter or
how to cooperate with other people for your work, etc. However, I do not think he can deny the fact
that the starting salary for a liberal arts graduate is approximately $32,500 while for an engineer is
$75,000, (http://www.mtu.edu/engineering/outreach/welcome/salary/). For instant, what can a
person possibly do with his philosophy degree right after graduating? He will probably have to go
for more schooling before he can find a high–paying job at some big firms or he will have to
struggle a lot before he can open his philosophy shop or publish his book. In short, a liberal arts
degree will take longer to see its worth than career education or vocational training.

Liberal Arts Misperceptions
Why are many young Americans so uncomfortable with liberal arts? And why are countless high
school graduates shying away from this particular form of education? Just like anything else that is
popular, once liberal arts has been accurately, or inaccurately, discredited, the aftermath inevitably
spreads. As more information is being mistakenly spread, numerous liberal arts colleges are taking
the fall. To combat the onslaught of negative publicity, university officers are beginning to speak out
to discredit the invalid claims. Sanford J. Ungar, a journalist and president of Goucher College, is
one of the faculty members actively trying to disprove the accusations against liberal arts colleges
and educations. In his February 2010 article from the academic journal The Chronicle of Higher
Education, Ungar gives readers multiple examples of common misunderstandings about liberal arts
and then informs them why those examples are incorrect. Appropriately titled, Ungar's "7 Major
Misperceptions About the Liberal Arts" is an easy "go to" guide when a person wants to learn more
about liberal arts. These readers, mainly students and parents looking toward a higher degree of
education, can read Ungar's essay and find new knowledge about the liberal arts discipline. As
students and parents are looking into colleges, their minds need to be open and free of biases.
Sanford Ungar's essay can help broaden the mindset of families, and even help make a decision to

Liberal Arts Colleges Do Not Gurantee A Job After Graduation
Society today places so much emphasis on attending a liberal arts college in order to get a degree
and succeed in life. The only problem is that liberal arts colleges do not gurantee a job after
graduation. Students are going into school expecting to graduate and be able to find a job, but then
they find out it is not that easy. The value on liberal arts education is too high compared to the
benefits. Results of interviews showed that after getting a job, the employee then had to learn on the
job how to use the proper writing style required. Future research should look towards toning down
the specialization of writing programs in higher education in order to cover a broader background
and better prepare students.
Overspecialization of Undergraduate Programs
Introduction
The Problem Undergraduate programs in recent years have become more and more specialized and
there is a lack of diversity in the writing styles taught in writing classes. This has led to students
being less prepared to enter the workplace and less qualified than the people who know the writing
style of the specific job. In multiple interviews, the interviewees, most of whom had been to college,
discussed how they learned the style of writing required by their job while at work.
Importance of the Problem The purpose of a liberal arts education is to teach students how to think
and learn for themselves while technical colleges prepare students to immediately enter the work
force after

`` Yes A College Education Is Worth The Cost `` By Rodney...
In his essay, "Yes a College Education is Worth the Cost," writer Rodney Smith discusses how
students of this generation don't care about receiving a great education for the future. Throughout his
essay he explains how a college education is worth the cost. He stated that people between the ages
of 18–34 say they would much rather get a job and make money than spend money to go back to
school to obtain a higher degree. Smith's family grew up in Oklahoma and they viewed education as
an investment. Smith was influenced by his father's upbringing and attended college and law school
just like his father. By establishing and building his case about how education is worth the cost, uses
a great deal of evidence, his argument is well organized, and he gains the audience's attention.
Background of the author
The organization of Smith argument was well structured. Smith begins his argument by imagining a
student getting a "worthless degree" and realizing that the degree he got won't repay the loan debt
(29). He then uses one type of persuasion, logos. He uses logos in the beginning to show the
percentages of going and not going to college can affect your future. In addition, the data illustrates
the percentage of people who have a certain degree and how much money the degree will earn them
(29). After that, he explains thoroughly why college education is worth the money. Smith uses
pathos to emotionally connect to his audience when he tells his story about when he was a president

Liberal Arts-Based College Education Advantages

  • 1. Liberal Arts-Based College Education Advantages In an era of ever–increasing costs of college expenses, concerned parents and stressed high school students face one crucial decision with an important tradeoff to consider: whether or not the alleged intellectual and personal benefits of a liberal arts–based college education substantially outweigh the overarching societal stigma that such a degree is obsolete and the financial burden of the extensive student loan debts that many families may incur as a result of this type of education. For these families and their minds spinning with unanswered questions, Fareed Zakaria takes the complicated matter and confronts it head–on, arguing that a liberal arts–educated population is a necessity for the success of both the individuals themselves and ... • 6. Setting Tuition and Financial Aid Setting Tuition and Financial Aid Managerial Economics 09/15/2013 The idea behind "applicants had apparently concluded that if the college cost more, it must be better" (Brickley, Smith, & Zimmerman, 2009) is still a premise that society perceived as accurate but the financial problem behind this idea is if students are not receiving the help needed with a financial aid increase, it feels that this idea will not hold up very much longer. Susan's analysis that the increase in tuition fee is likely to increase in the student enrollment and therefore would be helpful in solving the school's financial problem is absolutely incorrect. Financial aid is an important factor when students are thinking about applying for a college. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The following result associated with increase in the demand for enrolment in other colleges has convinced the president of Liberal Arts College that increasing tuition fees would lead to an increase in the quantity demanded. But Susan's analysis is not accurate and the increase in enrollment along with increase in tuition fee is not because demand curve is upward sloping but because there is just an increase in demand for enrolment in these prestige colleges. Hence Susan's analysis and suggestion of increasing the tuition fee and decreasing financial aid should not be accepted. A college should be recognized by its education and academic levels and not by its costs of attendance. Susan wants to increase prices to increase revenue and not because the college is investing on better academic resources and faculty staff. If the college wants to increase total revenue, then they need to focus on improving the quality of education by having a better faculty staff and study environment, which ultimately may lead to better job opportunities for student after graduation. • 8. The James Irvine Foundation : An Impressive Self... The James Irvine Foundation, through its higher education programs, has provided grants to about 30 private colleges in California to support diversity, and, after the decline of minority student enrollment in the late 1990s on some campuses, the foundation began to ask more about how the recipients of the grants dealt with diversity. The recipient colleges were asked to examine their history and data regarding diversity at their institution and identify their strengths and weaknesses. The results of this inquiry saw some schools provide an impressive self–assessment with focus on key issues and development of ways to progress and be better. Other institutions had a difficult time with the inquiry, while others just listed all the diversity–related activities their schools had on campus, including the addition of a diversity committee, new courses added to the curriculum, and the hiring of an African American admissions officer. All examples of what schools listed as evidence of their commitment and progression towards diversity (Shireman, 2003). To help schools provide a good self–assessment on diversity Robert Shireman (2003) suggested 10 poignant questions colleges and universities need to ask when reporting their progress on diversity. The first question is to ask how the institution defines diversity and if their definition has a focus on gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability and other factors? The reason for the added focus is because, by just focusing on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Liberal Arts Education : The Ideas Of A Liberal Arts College Every year, millions of high school seniors make a decision on where they want to attend college. One of the ideas these students have to consider is if they want to attend a vocational college or a liberal arts college. While some students feel very strongly one way or another, many students don't even know what a liberal arts education is. For a Christian liberal arts college, their answer should be simple. Jeffry C. Davis once said in his book Liberal Arts for the Christian Life that "Rightly understood, the pursuit of Christ is the supreme liberal art–the fundamental discipline that sets us free." (Davis 23) I believe that Davis is right on target with this quote, that anyone who is seeking true and complete freedom should be seeking Jesus Christ. But still, what is a "liberal arts" education? There's no one clear–cut answer to that question, and there's still debate on what the ideal liberal arts education looks like. For the purpose of this essay, I'd like to use the definition that was originally used for liberal arts. In the same book as before, Davis states that Together, these seven studies became what the Roman orator and statesman Cicero first described as the artes liberales, a term relatively understood in the first century BCE as "the academic disciplines for freedom." The arts proved to be freeing or liberal (a word that comes from the Latin liber, meaning "free person")... (Davis 27) Freedom. That was the goal of having a rounded, liberal arts education. ... • 12. Why I Am A Liberal Arts Education A liberal arts education encourages freedom by allowing students to grow individually and academically. Before I read the summer reading packet, I did not know this. By reading the packet, I understand what it means to be liberally educated at Loras College. The freedom and growth that I will experience through the liberal arts at Loras will allow me to become better–rounded as an individual. Because of this, I will have learned how to be a critical thinker and learner, see the whole picture of why I am learning what I am learning, and connect and use what I have learned to other aspects of life. I believe that through the liberal arts I will learn how see deeper into what I have learned, know the true reason of why I am learning what I am learning, expanding my knowledge by having a well–rounded education, and use that in real–world situations to better myself and society. Throughout my educational experience, I have been presented with different educational and social challenges that I have had to overcome to prepare me for where I am at now at Loras College. My family has moved to different towns and school districts several times during my 13 years of education. We moved because of my father's occupations in school administration. By starting as a teacher then moving up the ranks to being a principal, and eventually becoming a superintendent, my father has shown me the true meaning of achieving a goal and understanding why my family is where we are at today in ... • 14. A Career : The Career Of Acting As A Career As a person who considers themselves creative and fun, being an actor seems quite interesting. My job title would be actor/performer. Actors express various ideas and portray many characters from very different backgrounds, and they try to interpret the writer's script in a way that entertains or informs the audience ("Summary"). I chose acting as my career because as a kid I always thought acting was interesting and enjoyable. I tend to be a very verbose person at times so it is the perfect career for me. It is important, however, to understand the education or training requirements, skills or talents needed, salary and benefits offered, and the duties for a particular career when making this decision. The job is like a gypsy. You don't stay in one place. The work environment could range anywhere from parks, to theaters, and to various studios ("Summary"). Actors also don't have set work hours because it depends on how big the project is and how much practice is needed. There isn't a lot that goes into acting, but that doesn't mean that it is an easy job. They do not provide a specific training class because the training is long–term. That means that you get better the more you practice and the more you try to improve. Your day consists of auditions, reading and going over scripts, and performing. Some other duties you do are researching your character's traits, discussing the roles with the cast, and memorizing all your cues and lines. Your average day is just practice ... • 16. Analysis Of Are Too Many People Going To College Cade Wyman Professor Joyce Aasen English 1 11/5/17 Are Too Many People Going To College? In the article "Are Too Many People Going To College," Charles Murray claims that a lot of colleges are filled with students that lack certain skills and qualities that are needed for the college level. Murray goes on to say that not all students learn at the same level, but he still believes there are ways for lower ability students to be successful in college it taught better throughout K–8 and high school. Charles Murray wants all students to learn the importance of all subjects taught at college. However, he believes these students should be taught more in high school in order to be more prepared for college. Murray certainly expresses how important K–8 and high school can be when stating, "More people should be getting the basics of a liberal education. But for most students, the places to provide those basics are elementary and middle school." Murray argues that core knowledge is very important to reading and writing comprehension, stating that familiarity of these concepts is important when going to college. He believes K–8 is the perfect time to teach the core knowledge, which should raise the students effort right away in elementary school. Murray wants kids to be taught more throughout kindergarten and eighth grade, and believes students in high school should learn by surveys and classes that are just slightly below college level courses. • 18. Liberal Arts College Advantages A Liberal Arts college is common among my vocabulary as that's the type of college I attend, but I didn't specifically understand what in fact a Liberal Arts college was until now. Most think college is college no matter where you go, but frankly that's as far off base as you can get. Most colleges offer specific degrees or they are known for specific areas of field work. For example Texas A&M is mainly known for its veterinary field, Texas Tech is going to be where you find your engineer students and Liberal Arts colleges offer a wide range of selections. They are often known for more than being good at just one thing. While in my opinion Liberal Arts is a great choice not everyone agrees So besides Liberal Arts being a more broad range of studies what else makes it so great? ... That made me feel like I was someone not another person thinking about coming to the school. I loved the fact that the classes are small, it leaves more opportunities for discussions and really getting to know everyone. The utmost favorite part would have to be the fact that Houston Baptist is centered around God. People think you have to be Christian to attend, but that's not the case. Christianity paved the way for all types of studies. A great example is in an Christianity is Central to Western Values and Culture by Kevin Donnelly he quotes an American academic named Thomas E. Woods it states "Western civilization stands indebted to the church for the university system, charitable work, international law, the sciences, important legal principles and much else besides." (Lines 47–50). So whether used to approve or disapprove something Christianity is always going to be a factor knowingly or unknowingly. • 20. The Tuition Increase Affected Enrollment Rate Table of Contents Introduction 3 Background 4 Analysis 5 Factors 6 Recommendation 7 Conclusion 8 References 9 Introduction In 2000, the Board of Ursinus College, raised its tuition from $19,331 to $23,460. This turned out to be a 17.6% increase. Surprisingly, the tuition increase proved to be a positive change for Ursinus College. The college received more than 200 applicants than its previous year (Brickley, Smith and Zimmerman, 2009, p. 110). Other regional institutions such as University of Notre Dame, Bryn Mawr College and Rice University also experienced a similar trend once they increased their tuition rates (Brickley, Smith and Zimmerman, 2009, p. 110). The president of Ursinus College deduced that the tuition increase affected enrollment rate (increased enrollment). She simply stated that "people don't want cheap" (Brickley, Smith and Zimmerman, 2009, p. 110). Today, Susan Hansen, Admissions Director of East Liberal Arts College, wishes to increase tuition and reduce financial aid available to students (Brickley, Smith and Zimmerman, 2009, p. 110). Moreover, she has expressed that "increasing tuition and reducing the amount of financial aid will solve the schools financial problems" (Brickley, Smith and Zimmerman, 2009, p. 110). This will be done by "increasing an effective tuition from $15,000 to $25,000" (Brickley et al., 2009). She also projects that the tuition increase enrollment from 400 to 600 students (Brickley, Smith and Zimmerman, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 22. Why College Matters to God Essay 1. The author (Ostrander) emphasizes that students should not stress out over choosing a major. He tells us that what one majors in is less important than the overall qualities, knowledge base, and the skills that one develops. Ostrander also points out that a major is much less important than the skills that people gain by using a quote from an executive, "I look for people who take accountability, responsibility and are good team people over anything else. I can teach the technical." 2. Going to a liberal arts college is like training for the Olympics without knowing what event you are going to participate in. You have to make sure that you are the best you can be in every way. You would have to be a great runner, swimmer and even ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 5. The Biblical creation story applies to our lives at college. By studying his creation we grow to know God better and we learn to live Godly lives by looking at what he created us to do. Just like atheistic scientists James Watson and Francis Crick discovered DNA by studying the creation not the Bible we can learn a lot about God and ourselves by not just reading the Bible, but also taking time to study the creation. 6. One of the ways Adam and Eve's sin in the Garden of Eden effects higher education according to Rick Orstander is because of the fall, Christians have to approach academic life with a healthy dose of uncertainty. Because of the fall, we know that people can be selfish, corrupt, mistaken and self– deluded even when they are trying to do good. With this knowledge we need to apply a "hermeneutics of suspicion" which means that we recognize that each person has some sort of biased and all want to be correct. So as Christians we should approach any truth claim with both generosity and suspicion no matter who the truth claim comes from. 7. Christian college education equips us to play a role in redeeming God's creation to the way it was supposed to be. By studying the word of God and applying it to every aspect of our lives we are working hard to bring ourselves back to what God intended us to be. Ostrander points out that part of our task as cultural beings is to redeem ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 24. College Facilites for Division III Athletics Essay Division III athletics have become more then high school athletes holding onto a dream and competing at the non–scholarship level of the National collegiate athletic association. From 2004 to 2012 the average cost of having a division III athletics program has gone up 200% (Fulks, 2013). From 2004 until 2012 the average cost per athlete has also gone up, from $3,500 to $5,800. This money does not even touch the levels that are being spent in Division I, but Division III athletics are on an upward trend of spending. The commitment to athletics in Division III has lead to money being spent on new sports and recreation facilities. The point of facilities has been to give the "wow" factor to visiting prospects. In almost all cases the facilities at a college will be better then the high school or junior college the student athlete is coming from. The belief that new facilities bring in better recruits was tested by the research into the subject. Although new facilities did attract more initial interest from recruits (Schneider, 2012) the final decision about which school to attend came down to other different factors. In the study of "The impact of Athletic Faculties on the Recruitment of Student Athletes" college athletic prospects were asked why they choose the college they did. With factors such as playing time, location, tradition, education, facilities, teammates, and school color to name a few, the results were as follows. Non–Scholarship athletes that had no option to receive finical aid from the school they planned on attending, like the ones in division III, had top five factors of 1) playing time, 2) social life, 3) Education, 4) Location and 5) Financial Aid. Not until after the top ten did weight room and locker rooms came into effect. In another study it was shown that scholarship athletes in Division I were motivated by completion and achievement, while in division III the main motivator to play was the "experience" or the social ... The college only offers bachelor's degrees. Westmont is a standard four year college. They are nondenominational and encourage their students to live out a Christian life. They supply Christian– based studies. An interesting fact is that 78% of financial needs are met! Serious crime (per 1000 students per year) is a shocking 17.06, drug or weapon incidents are 2.22, and alcohol encounters are 14.83. Westmont has large selection of majors totaling up to forty–five. They have a pre–nursing program and a pre–veterinary program, which I am interested in. I really like that Westmont has so many choices to get a degree in. The college is extremely small with 1,346 students, 337 of which are freshman. Since the school is so small the student to teacher ratio is 11:1. I really enjoy this statistic, since I find most my help comes from conversing with my teachers to learn about the subject more deeply. Having more one–on–one time with the professors' means any terms that you do not understand you can go over them with your professor privately to get a better understanding! • 30. Liberal Arts Should Be Taught In College Essay What is Being Taught in College? What should colleges be teaching, is a question that many people are wanting an answer to. Should colleges be teaching students liberal arts or should they just let liberal arts classes slip away? This a controversy between students on every college campus. It is important to the students, because they want what is best for themselves during college. I believe that students need to be taught liberal arts to help better their learning abilities. In my own experience, I have learned that liberal arts classes may be frustrating, but in the long run they have really helped to develop a better grasp on general education. Liberal arts classes are a good way to begin college, instead of just jumping right in to a major. Colleges should teach liberal arts because they help students develop better learning skills. ... • 32. The New Liberal Arts, By Sanford J. Ungar And Robert Reich... To discuss the value of liberal education, there should be a mutual understanding that investing in college means to invest in oneself. Furthermore, while some consider this investment to be a critical stepping stone to success, others dismiss it, explaining that school simply cannot prepare someone for the "real world." Sanford J. Ungar and Robert Reich explore both of these subjective values in their essays "The New Liberal Arts" and "College is a Ludicrous Waste of Money." Ungar, the president of Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland, discusses why a liberal education should be sought after; he does so by introducing common misconceptions about liberal arts and, using argumentative persuasion, proves their insignificance. On the other hand, Reich, the former secretary of labor, argues against the conventional belief of college being the only road to financial wellbeing; rather, he explains why a two–year education may better accommodate many college students, especially those in need of immediate work or those that simply cannot afford a four–year education. In all, although both Reich and Ungar generally discuss liberal education, their perspectives differ when it comes to its practicality in the current economy. Also, to express their different views about liberal arts, the authors use contrasting tones to present their ideas to different intended audiences. In order to analyze the given arguments, one must identify the intended audiences. Ungar explores many ideas, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The tuition dependency ratio, which represents the reliance of the institution on revenue generated from tuition, is relatively small for Allegheny College as compared to Colgate University. The ratios of 49% and 51% for Allegheny College and Colgate University respectably, show a well–balanced dependence on tuition. It can be inferred that financial downturns and occasional drop in student enrollment would not severely preclude operations. With a strong student demand reflecting in the enrollment figures, we find the relatively high tuition discount ratio of 44% belonging to Allegheny College concerning. As compared to 31% of tuition discount provided by Colgate University, Allegheny College's higher percentage reflects that they are giving out many scholarships and aid from their earned revenue in order to attracted applicants. Colgate University, on the other hand, establishes itself as a reputable brand and does not need to rely as heavily on offering scholarships to students in order to keep the student demand high. • 45. Benefits Of Liberal Arts Education The way children are educated early on has a direct influence on their development. There are two primary forms of education that children are exposed to, the first being liberal arts. In a liberal arts education the primary subjects taught are, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and formal sciences. The goal of a liberal arts education is to prepare the student to deal with complexity, diversity, and change to assist in their adaption to the world later on. The second form of education is STEM, standing for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. STEM education focuses more on the analytical side of the school system with not as much thought given to the social and artistic side as liberal arts does. STEM chooses to integrate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in a practical way with emphasis on real–world application. The more beneficial of the two is liberal arts because it exposes students to a more diverse education, it is affordable, and it helps students gain an awareness of cultural diversity and varied perspectives. One of the advantages found through a liberal arts education is that it exposes students to more diverse way of learning. Liberal arts covers general areas of study which includes a variety of subjects such as, humanities, social sciences, creative arts, and sciences. • 47. The Art Of Liberal Arts The Art of Liberal Arts "I can't go to a liberal–arts college. My parents are conservatives!" I told my eighth grade teacher. He laughed and then went on to explain what a liberal–arts college actually is. Like many others, I believed a common misperception about the liberal–arts. In "The New Liberal Arts" by Sanford J. Ungar, the writer explains wrong ideas about the liberal–arts to a college–based audience including students, professors, and administration. He explains the importance and relevance of a liberal–arts education. Ungar claims that it is a better investment than narrow, specific technical training because it prepares students for career placement by giving them skills in communicating effectively, thinking creatively, and understanding comprehensively. I agree with Ungar and I think he successfully explains the reasons why liberal arts are important and relevant in today's society. First, the logic of the article focuses on why students should have a balanced, well–rounded understanding of the world to be successful in life rather than having a career–based education that is only focused on one aspect. There were no obvious fallacies found in Ungar's argument beyond the generalization about costs for all colleges thus not focusing primarily on the financial situation. Additionally, Ungar uses a 2009 survey for the Association of American Colleges and Universities to reveal that "more than three–quarters of our nation's employers recommend that college–bound ... The Liberal Arts Education Is Better Than A Education Now that I am in college, I have pondered upon whether a liberal arts education is better than a vocational education; a topic that did not cross my mind in high school. A liberal arts curriculum includes the studies intended to primarily provide general knowledge such as language, philosophy, literature, and abstract science and to develop general intellectual capacities, such as reason and judgment, as opposed to professional or vocational skills (merriam–webster.com). As students wanting to achieve a higher education, we have to think about what we want for ourselves. Either you want to grow as an individual and obtain a major in whichever field you chose, or just learn what best interests you. People have many misconceptions toward what the liberal arts are and how they can benefit you. We often hear things like, "A liberal arts degree will not get you a real job." or "A liberal arts degree is a luxury not a necessity." Although this is what the majority of the people who are not aware about the actual facts say, this is not true. An examination of, The New Liberal Arts by author Sanford J. Ungar, and Are Too Many People Going to College? by author Charles Murray, will reveal to us why one gains more knowledge at a liberal arts school. Advantage Of Liberal Arts College For those who want to further their schooling in a way that focuses on undergraduate studies and creating a well–rounded education a liberal arts college is the perfect opportunity to achieve a higher education. Some of the oldest liberal arts colleges in the United States date back to the 1600s. There are many advantages to studying at a liberal arts college. A liberal arts education can give students the opportunity to have a smaller environment and a well–rounded education. The smaller environment that a liberal arts college provides to students is very helpful for a successful college experience. A smaller number of undergrad students enrolled into one's college translates to having smaller class sizes. Jessica Velasco explains, "Average class sizes at liberal arts colleges are usually less than 30 students" (Velasco, College Raptor). The transition from small high school classes to college is easier if the college classes are similar in size. This is especially helpful for students who have trouble focusing and learn best in smaller environments. It is easier to get help when necessary. Hand in hand with smaller class sizes is close relationships with professors. Velasco illustrates, "Classes, including introductory courses, are taught by professors at liberal arts colleges... because each class is usually taught by a professor, this means they generally have the opportunity to spend more quality time with their students, getting to know them, evaluating and critiquing their work much more closely, and serving as mentors" (Velasco, College Raptor). At most universities lecture classes have hundreds of students. At those institutions, it is nearly impossible to be on a first name basis with the professors. With a large number of students, there is often no time to build relationships. The small environment that liberal arts colleges pride themselves on allows easy access to professors. They are able to answer questions and personally help their students. Finally, many liberal arts colleges have many student activities to take part in. "Liberal arts colleges usually have fewer student organizations and activities than larger universities, but participation tends to be higher," Velasco writes. Time ... • 69. Similarities Between College And University The terms college and university originally had very similar meanings. Only with the passing of centuries did university come to signify an educational institution composed of more than one college. The word college means literally "union formed by law," or a group of people associated in some common function. The ancient Roman craft guilds were called collegia. The closest parallel today is the corporation, a business organization chartered by a government.  During the Middle Ages students at the universities of Paris, Oxford, and Cambridge found it convenient to rent houses and share expenses instead of living in private apartments. By the 13th century these "houses of scholars" were becoming legally recognized corporate institutions. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When used in its modern sense as a place for advanced learning, it usually required the addition of other words such as "masters and scholars." The term that was normally used to describe a legally chartered school of teachers and students was studium generale, meaning a place of study open to students from all parts. The universitas was a group of teachers or students (or perhaps both) within the studium. A studium was quite similar to a guild in both origin and composition. The beginners were essentially apprentices, called bachelors, while the teachers were the masters.  The studium probably emerged when the bishop of a diocese gave a teacher permission to operate a school other than the local cathedral or monastery school. It is likely that a license to teach was granted to a master after a formal examination. The studium itself became a school that granted a teaching license to its scholars after they completed a prescribed course of study and passed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. Essay on The New Liberal Arts Anh Pham English 101 "The New Liberal Arts" is an article written by Sanford J. Ungar, who is a president of Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland. In the beginning of his article, Ungar wrote, "Hard economic times inevitably bring scrutiny of all accepted ideals and institutions, and this time around the liberal arts education has been especially hard hit." In other words, Ungar means that recent economic recessions have made a huge impact on what people think of going for a liberal arts degree. In his essay, Ungar lists seven misperceptions and how he reacts to them. The most common misperception that Ungar identified is that liberal arts degrees are no longer affordable. The cost for liberal arts education is very expensive while ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He wrote, "The career bandwagon seems to suggest that shortcuts are available to students that lead directly to high–paying jobs–leaving out "frills" like learning how to write and speak well, how to understand the nuances of literacy texts and scientific concepts, how to collaborate with others on research" What he means by that is there is no shortcuts to a high–paying jobs. He also implies that liberal arts education is the only right way to prepare an individual for their future career because it equips ones with the abilities to write and speak formally, and understandings on scientific matter or how to cooperate with other people for your work, etc. However, I do not think he can deny the fact that the starting salary for a liberal arts graduate is approximately $32,500 while for an engineer is $75,000, (http://www.mtu.edu/engineering/outreach/welcome/salary/). For instant, what can a person possibly do with his philosophy degree right after graduating? He will probably have to go for more schooling before he can find a high–paying job at some big firms or he will have to struggle a lot before he can open his philosophy shop or publish his book. In short, a liberal arts degree will take longer to see its worth than career education or vocational training. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Liberal Arts Misperceptions Why are many young Americans so uncomfortable with liberal arts? And why are countless high school graduates shying away from this particular form of education? Just like anything else that is popular, once liberal arts has been accurately, or inaccurately, discredited, the aftermath inevitably spreads. As more information is being mistakenly spread, numerous liberal arts colleges are taking the fall. To combat the onslaught of negative publicity, university officers are beginning to speak out to discredit the invalid claims. Sanford J. Ungar, a journalist and president of Goucher College, is one of the faculty members actively trying to disprove the accusations against liberal arts colleges and educations. In his February 2010 article from the academic journal The Chronicle of Higher Education, Ungar gives readers multiple examples of common misunderstandings about liberal arts and then informs them why those examples are incorrect. Appropriately titled, Ungar's "7 Major Misperceptions About the Liberal Arts" is an easy "go to" guide when a person wants to learn more about liberal arts. These readers, mainly students and parents looking toward a higher degree of education, can read Ungar's essay and find new knowledge about the liberal arts discipline. As students and parents are looking into colleges, their minds need to be open and free of biases. Sanford Ungar's essay can help broaden the mindset of families, and even help make a decision to attend a liberal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Liberal Arts Colleges Do Not Gurantee A Job After Graduation Society today places so much emphasis on attending a liberal arts college in order to get a degree and succeed in life. The only problem is that liberal arts colleges do not gurantee a job after graduation. Students are going into school expecting to graduate and be able to find a job, but then they find out it is not that easy. The value on liberal arts education is too high compared to the benefits. Results of interviews showed that after getting a job, the employee then had to learn on the job how to use the proper writing style required. Future research should look towards toning down the specialization of writing programs in higher education in order to cover a broader background and better prepare students. Overspecialization of Undergraduate Programs Introduction The Problem Undergraduate programs in recent years have become more and more specialized and there is a lack of diversity in the writing styles taught in writing classes. This has led to students being less prepared to enter the workplace and less qualified than the people who know the writing style of the specific job. In multiple interviews, the interviewees, most of whom had been to college, discussed how they learned the style of writing required by their job while at work. Importance of the Problem The purpose of a liberal arts education is to teach students how to think and learn for themselves while technical colleges prepare students to immediately enter the work force after ... • 77. `` Yes A College Education Is Worth The Cost `` By Rodney... In his essay, "Yes a College Education is Worth the Cost," writer Rodney Smith discusses how students of this generation don't care about receiving a great education for the future. Throughout his essay he explains how a college education is worth the cost. He stated that people between the ages of 18–34 say they would much rather get a job and make money than spend money to go back to school to obtain a higher degree. Smith's family grew up in Oklahoma and they viewed education as an investment. Smith was influenced by his father's upbringing and attended college and law school just like his father. By establishing and building his case about how education is worth the cost, uses a great deal of evidence, his argument is well organized, and he gains the audience's attention. Background of the author The organization of Smith argument was well structured. Smith begins his argument by imagining a student getting a "worthless degree" and realizing that the degree he got won't repay the loan debt (29). He then uses one type of persuasion, logos. He uses logos in the beginning to show the percentages of going and not going to college can affect your future. In addition, the data illustrates the percentage of people who have a certain degree and how much money the degree will earn them (29). After that, he explains thoroughly why college education is worth the money. Smith uses pathos to emotionally connect to his audience when he tells his story about when he was a president at ... • 79. A Study On Wartburg College Wartburg College is nestled in the small Iowa city of Waverly population 10,106. The small campus of 1,482 is arranged so it is very close together and most buildings are connected by skywalks. Since the private college is so small, the average class size is eighteen, and the student to faculty ratio is an impressive 11:1. Of the 1,482 students at Warburg College around 450 are involved in music in some way. This shows a strong emphasis on and belief in music. There are currently fifteen choral and instrumental ensembles at Wartburg and there is always potential to be more. They allow people to form music ensembles and have them supported by the school if a faculty member will sponsor it. They even have a community symphony that some selected students can play in. With this, the students can interact more with the Waverly community and form some important business connections that they can call on in the future. All the ensembles are open to music and non music majors and they are all open to incoming freshman. Students do not have to be an upperclassmen to make it into one of the three internationally touring ensembles. Wartburg college has a 4–4–1 class schedule and this allows the touring ensembles to travel in what they call "May term" or the 1 part of the class schedule. During that time they only take one class for the whole month of May and really immerse themselves in it. It is also at this time when most people plan their study abroad classes. 42% of the 2016 class ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
