Magazine Ideas
Color Scheme
Due to the representations of the colors and the deeper
meanings behind them all, I would go with darker and
more vibrant colors, red, white and black would be good
examples of these color themes as they connote deeper
meanings and are quite relevant themes in the Rap/ Hip-
Hop genre.
Types Of Images
Big named artists, and news headlines related to Rap and
Hip-Hop based genres or themes. This will interact with
the consumer well as they would want to buy the
magazine due to the attraction of the artist or the news
headline related to the artist. Further Up-And-Coming
artists in the industry that are looking to make a big name
for themselves by releasing their first single.
SHD (Pronounced Shade): The
Masthead of the magazine, was
created in order to portray some of
the ‘shade’, abuse or unfairly
disputed comments against the
artists in the Rap industry.
Masthead
313 (Area Code of Detroit): A lot of Up-And-Coming
artists originate from Detroit, which is where you would
find ‘Raw’ talent form younger artists as they come up
from tougher neighborhoods, a good example would be
Eminem as he was coming up in the mid-to-late 90’s
through rap battles and a tough life with his family and
work life. STRAPLINE: “The story hidden behind the
truth”.
NXT EP: This is inspiration from the song title ‘The
Next Episode’ By Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Nate
Dogg, from Dr. Dre’s album, 2001. This would go
into further meaning of the magazine looking into
the ‘Next Episode’ of the Industry or Rap Genre.
STAPLINE: “Look Ahead to a New Era”.
Frequency
The magazine would be released every month. This would
keep the consumer intact with the news based upon their
favorite artists and also allow the ‘press’ to get news and
imagery to relate to the stories that would have been
heard about within that month and most likely released on
the magazine’s website. This would also give time to the
editorial team to ensure that the magazine is up to
standards and its content is fact not made up or twisted by
the authors of the articles.
Brand Identity
Include the logo on the front cover along with the
masthead and slogan of the magazine. This would
attract the reader as it would allow them to see just
what the magazine is about and what is focuses on,
possibly bringing in new readers due to the slogan.
Further include the website link on the bottom
corner of each page, along with the page number
and the Masthead along the top of the page, or
double page.
Target Audience
The magazine would be focusing on a target
audience of an age between 16-30 years old,
due to the provided content and the general
themes within the magazine itself. Typically
because these would be the ‘Younger’ Adult
ages where people still party and are looking
for a good time, so will most likely be invited
into buying this magazine in order to fit in
and know what the newest music out, is.
It would further focus on Middle Class (B)
and the Lower Working Class (C1). This
would be due top the content that would be
in the magazine, and its relevance to the
audience.
Proposal for ‘NXT EP’
Proposal for ‘313’
Moodboard 1
Moodboard Summary 1
• For this Moodboard I used the inspiration of “NXT EP” due to the fact that, the content within it will be relevant to the most up-to-
date news headlines or stories in relevance to the Rap/Hip-Hop industry. There will be a large amount of focus on artists that are big,
and up-and-coming, specifically to do with new releases from them, hence the name “NXT EP” as it will be looking ahead to what
music is really seen as ‘now’ or new, therefore looking into the artists future due to the release of this new album.
• I specifically chose these artists because, for example, Yelawolf (Middle image with hat and tattoos on neck), has just recently signed a
contract with Eminem’s record Label, Shady Records, and he has just recently got big through this signing and further his single
releases with other famous artists such as Lil’ Jon and Travis Barker, whom he has made hit singles with, but further his own, recently
released album ‘Love Story’ which has hit very high numbers in the charts, at the time of its release.
• Further I used an image of Kendrick Lamar, who has just recently ‘Blown Up’ in the rap scene. Being a rapper from Compton, CA and
growing up in those types of neighborhoods, influenced by gangs, drugs and money, he of course grew up listening to NWA, Dr. Dre
and Tupac, amongst many other West Coast artists from the 80’s and 90’s. These are the artists that influenced him to become the
sensation that he is in the industry at this moment and time, with his most recent album release being ‘To Pimp A Butterfly’, which has
become extremely recognized to many artists, and of course Hip-Hop/ Rap fans across the world. So, along with the rest of the
pictured artists, A$AP Rocky, Danny Brown, Future, Anderson Paak., and G Eazy, he is growing to be the next ‘father figure’ in this
music industry, right next to his inspiration, Dr. Dre himself.
Moodboard 2
Moodboard Summary 2
• For this Moodboard I used the inspiration of “313” due to the fact that, all the content within it would be focused specifically on the
new music and the news stories, along with ‘TBT’ (Throw Back To(s)) stories of rappers that have maybe passed away and have had
amazing careers relevant to Rap and Hip-Hop. This would attract the target audience as it would take them back to the good old days
when music was sampled and strictly original, not like now where artists copy beats, and sample from electronically made beats. So as
a magazine, it would be focusing on Rap and Hip-Hop as “NXT EP” would be, except “313” would be looking at the different aspects of
it, not just the most up-to-date music.
• The reason I used the images of Dr. Dre and Ice Cube, along with their group NWA, is because they almost represent and created the
original era of Hip-Hop back in the late 80’s, early 90’s, and now people are starting to look up to and listen to these artists a lot more,
purely for the fact that the music they release is strictly original and is made with real talent, unlike music nowadays which is
simplistic, auto-tuned and repetitive.
• Finally I used the image of the lowrider in the center in order to represent the fact that the magazine, “313” would be looking at
content and artists relevant to the music releases and attitudes towards rap and hip-hop from the 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s.
Lowriders were predominantly used in Compton and generally the ‘West Coast’ or ‘West Side’ of America, by rappers, gangsters,
hustlers and Mexicans, along with people of a black culture, therefore bringing it back to the days of separation between colors and
races in the 80’s, 90’s eras.
Front Cover Analysis of Magazine of Inspiration
From this front cover we can see a clear Masthead and
Strapline. The masthead would be one of the most
important features on a Magazine front cover as it shows
the reader who the magazine is made by, and this links to
the Strapline as it is what draws in the reader and lets them
know who is on the Front Cover and what other content will
be found in this issue magazine. From this front cover we
can see that there is the typically large ‘Q’ in a bright vivid
red colour which stands out from the rest of the front cover,
as the rest of it includes a majority of white, turquoise and
pink purples. Further we can see the strapline of the front
cover, which would be found at the top right hand corner of
the cover, which reads “The Music That Changed My Life”,
which is a quote from the interview in the DPS with the
artist on the front cover, Tinie Tempah. This is what would
attract a reader to pick up the magazine, buy it and read the
article.
From this front cover I will partially repeat the colour
scheme by taking away the use of the res and the white,
along with the black from the font that has been used, I will
not use the Turquoise or the Pink/ Purple that is seen on
the front cover. Further I will repeat the placement of the
Masthead and the placement of the ‘Other Content/ Titles’
and the Puff Promotions. What will You Repeat (Steve Neale
– 1980).
We can see no puff promotions on this Front Cover, except
for the titles or briefs that would interest readers to buy the
magazine more, as they give little details about the rest of
the articles and the rest of the content that would be found
further into the magazine. This could be due to the fact that
this is from Q Magazine, which is considered a very high
class magazine, therefore they would almost not want to fill
up the whole cover with puff promotions and irrelevant
information.
We can see on this front cover that the use of Star Appeal has been used as they have highlighted the “#01”
through enlarging the font of it severely in comparison to the rest of the text that can be found on the front cover,
and further placing it in front of a completely different colour graphic in comparison to the background and the
rest of the front cover. Further Star Appeal is added through enlarging the “Tinie Tempah” font on the front cover,
and placing it in front of the main image, therefore showing the importance of just having that name, and how
significant it is, but also showing how well known he is, as most people will pick up the magazine and buy it just
because it is Tinie Tempah on the Front Cover, and they will not be too bothered about the actual content as such.
Denotations and Connotations of a Double Page Spread
Credits: On this Double Page Spread, there are no obvious
credits being given to the author of the article, not that
we can see anyways, through credit will be given to the
photographer, as seen underneath the ‘Rap Radar’ logo,
in white writing.
Drop Capital: On the interview part of the Double Page
Spread, we can see a huge letter J being used in the
middle of the page, which is in a sense, the Drop Capital
for the article, as the first word for it begins with a J (Jay
Z, the name of the artist which the article is about).
Main Image: We can see the main image is a close-up
head shot, which has specifically been done like this in
order to capture Jay Z’s facial expression. Further we can
see the lighting that has been added to the image, where
there is a clear divide between the white natural lighting,
and the red lighting, which would almost depict that Jay
has a half side to him, which still remains to his original
roots of New York, as he is a Brooklyn Rapper, and still has
that same rap style in him.
Stand First: “The Most Exciting People in Music, JAY – Z”
is the Stand First used for this article on Jay Z. We can see
this at the top of the article on the right-hand page of the
Double Page Spread, and it is clear as the font has been
used in a Larger size in comparison to the main body of
text. Further we can see ‘Star Appeal’ being used as “Jay
Z’s” name is being used in the sentence, and it is
highlighted in a different colour (Red), whereas the rest of
the text is in black.
Quote from the Interview: “Everyone trying to do
something new is going to come up against a Noel
Gallagher figure in their Life.” is the quote that is used on
the left hand page of the Double Page Spread that we can
see here. This almost signifies that Jay Z could see himself
as the ‘Noel Gallagher’ figure that people come across,
which is why they all seem to look up to him, as he is now
almost a fatherly figure in Hip Hop and has been placed
amongst the greats that came out of New York, such as
Biggie Smalls, Nas and so on. So in essence he is saying
that it is better that he stays in music as one of the
Greats, make some music, but most importantly maintain
his image and role in the industry, and bring up new
people and allow them to gain recognition.
Page Number: We can see the Page Number has been placed at the Bottom-Left hand corner
of the right-hand page, which can be seen along-side the Q Logo, the month in which the issue
was released in, which is October 2010, and further the website link for Q Magazine,
“qthemusic.com”. We cant see a page number or Q promotions on the right-hand page where
the main image for the article is found, due to the main image being there. We can further see
the colour scheme and the theme of the article being carried through on the Double Page
Spread and on the Page Number, Logo and any other promotions, as the colour for the Q logo,
is red, as is the article, and the black simple writing and the Block writing for the actual page
number is also followed through which gives a more professional look overall on the article.
Captions: We can see that there are 2 captions on the left-hand page of the Double Page
Spread, one of which says “Everyone trying to do something new is going to come up against a
Noel Gallagher figure in their Life.”. Which is also the Quote from the Interview. This, along with
the main image and the very bright and vibrant Drop Capital, would be used to attract the
reader as this is a direct quote from Jay Z, which would make people want to read further into
the article and find out more. The second says “Better Red than Dead: Jay Z Shot Exclusively for
Q, New York, July 2010.” which is the title of the Image that has been used, as half of Jay Z in
the image, is Red, and the other half is normal.
Summary Of Ideas “NXT EP”
• Genre: For this magazine the Genre will be purely Rap and Hip-Hop based, and all the content within it will be relevant to the most up-
to-date news headlines or stories in relevance to the Rap/Hip-Hop industry. There will be a large amount of focus on artists that are
big, and up-and-coming, specifically to do with new releases from them, hence the name “NXT EP” as it will be looking ahead to what
music is really seen as ‘now’ or new, therefore looking into the artists future due to the release of this new album.
• The Colors of the Magazine: The magazines theme, color scheme, will be strictly looking at a Red, Black and White colors. Due to the
representations of the colors and the deeper meanings behind them all, I would go with darker and more vibrant colors, red, white
and black would be good examples of these color themes as they connote deeper meanings and are quite relevant themes in the Rap/
Hip-Hop genre.
• Target Audience: The magazine would be focusing on a target audience of an age between 16-30 years old, due to the provided
content and the general themes within the magazine itself. Typically because these would be the ‘Younger’ Adult ages where people
still party and are looking for a good time, so will most likely be invited into buying this magazine in order to fit in and know what the
newest music out, is. It would further focus on Middle Class (B) and the Lower Working Class (C1). This would be due top the content
that would be in the magazine, and its relevance to the audience.
• Price: As a magazine that focuses solely on Rap and Hip-Hop based themes, and provides nothing other than specific content relevant
to these themes, it would intentionally increase the price of the magazine due to the specific content, that is all relevant. So the
estimated price for “NXT EP” would have to be £3.99, as this would be a low enough and also affordable price for the intended target
audience, therefore allowing more people to buy it.
• Size (A4): The magazine would be printed in an A4 size, as this would allow the editors to make their work excellent, due to the small
scale they are working with, therefore allowing them to very easily notice any mistakes or editing errors, and so correcting them. It will
further allow the magazine to be filled entirely and crammed with content relevant to that month’s issue being released.
Summary Of Ideas “313”
• Genre: For this magazine the Genre would be focused specifically on the new music and the news stories, along with ‘TBT’ (Throw
Back To(s)) stories of rappers that have maybe passed away and have had amazing careers relevant to Rap and Hip-Hop. This would
attract the target audience as it would take them back to the good old days when music was sampled and strictly original, not like now
where artists copy beats, and sample from electronically made beats. So as a magazine, it would be focusing on Rap and Hip-Hop as
“NXT EP” would be, except “313” would be looking at the different aspects of it, not just the most up-to-date music.
• The Colors of the Magazine: The magazines theme, color scheme, would be looking at a Red, Black and White colors. Due to the
representations of the colors and the deeper meanings behind them all, I would go with darker and more vibrant colors, red, white
and black would be good examples of these color themes as they connote deeper meanings and are quite relevant themes in the Rap/
So the
estimated price for “313” would have to be £3.99, as this would be a low enough and also affordable price for the intended target
audience, therefore allowing more people to buy it.
• Size (A4): The magazine would be printed in an A4 size, as this would allow the editors to make their work excellent, due to the small
scale they are working with, therefore allowing them to very easily notice any mistakes or editing errors, and so correcting them. It will
further allow the magazine to be filled entirely and crammed with content relevant to that months issue being released.
Form and Style Of Magazine
• The magazine would consist of a color scheme that has the colors of Red, White and Black on it, as this would convey
the use of the general Hip-Hop and Rap theme color scheme that can be seen in most of the album covers of artists, on
the previous moodboard slides. This specific color scheme seems to be very popular within the use of the album covers
and also magazines such as Q Magazine, XXL, or even Vibe Magazine, therefore showing the popularity of the color
scheme that would be used, as it is very common within the Rap and Hip Hop community, be in within the actual music
side or just the media content and coverage of it all. This is also evident through the use of these colors in logos and
graphics that all 3 of those magazines use in their Websites, Magazines, Media, Online Content and Social Media.
• Further I would be using a simple layout of style for the front cover and I would be following the simplicity that XXL
used when they published their Dr. Dre Issue, as portrayed on the ‘Magazine Of Inspiration’ slide at the start of the
presentation. So this would consist of using the following layout of, a clean front cover, with the Main Headline only as
text around the Main Image, therefore allowing the reader to focus solely on that story. Secondly a simple back and
foreground with the simple logo, therefore allowing the magazine to look professional and attractive to the target
audience. I wouldn’t want to go with the exact same front cover style as Q as I wouldn’t necessarily feel it represents
the genre of Rap and Hip Hop as I would want it to, on my magazine. In turn I will combine some ideas from both Q and
XXL in order to get a front cover that has aspects of both, and further represents the genre in the correct manner, and
as intended.

Evaluation
In my magazine flat plan I have shown all of the pages that would be in the magazine, in the exact layout that they would
follow along with any relevant adverts that I have chosen to go into the magazine, whether they cover a third of the page, a
half of the page, a full A4 page or the full Double Page Spread. I chose specific adverts such as albums that are big or about to
be released in the Rap and Hip Hop genre because people will be reminded of them or see them for the first time and they
may be from their favorite artist, therefore allowing them to know more about this artist and more about their new music that
will soon be released. I also included adverts from brands that artists from this genre mention in their songs or lyrics, use or
are sponsored by, or brands that are relevant and have meaning or a link to this genre, therefore making them vital to include
as it finalizes the meaning of the magazine and almost seals it as being a Hip Hop and Rap magazine. I have chosen to include
Double Page Spreads that are just posters of certain artists as this would allow for the readers and the target market to simply
rip the double page out when they buy the magazine, and have a poster of their favorite artist instantly, therefore symbolizing
the meaning of the magazine even further and attracting the target market even more as they know that they will get a free
poster of certain artists in the issues of this magazine that will be released in the future and from day 1 of the magazine being
initially released, therefore keeping and locking a specific target market that would remain buying this magazine for the simple
reason that free posters are included in the magazine, and ads for certain brands, but also information and interviews with
their favorite artists of this famous Rap and Hip Hop Genre that everyone is so fond of nowadays.
Spending Power of Audience
• Psychographics Theory: “Psychographics is the study of personality, values, opinions, attitudes, interests, and lifestyles. Because this area of
research focuses on interests, attitudes, and opinions, psychographic factors are also called IAO variables.”. My magazines focuses on the
new and up and coming artists in the rap and hip hop industry, and what exactly they are doing to expand the name for themselves,
whether it is through promotion or through other ways of making their name bigger and more well known. They also look at old school, or
more original artists that have been around a long time, have made a huge name for themselves, some of which have been inducted into
the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, for example, rap group NWA, and most recently 2Pac (Tupac Shakur), therefore showing their importance.
By focusing on these specific topics, they will be increasing the number of sales for the magazine, and so bringing in more profits, due to
the demand that people have to read these top and exclusive stories about such artists.
• Socio-economic Needs: “relating to or concerned with the interaction of social and economic factors.”. My magazines would be focusing on
several ways to connect with their readers in order to attract more subscribers and also to get new content out to the consumers. We
would be looking at ways of advertising new content that would be on our website or that would be in next months issue that we would be
releasing, if this is the case we would be releasing snippets of interviews or content relevant to an artist or topic, that would attract the
reader to buy the magazine when it is next released in order to get hold of that content and read up on their favorite artist, or new artists
that they may have heard good things about through other artists or other people who are influential.
Target Audience Of Magazine
The magazine would be focusing on a target audience of an age between 16-30 years old, due to the provided content and the general themes within the
magazine itself. Typically because these would be the ‘Younger’ Adult ages where people still party and are looking for a good time, so will most likely be
invited into buying this magazine in order to fit in and know what the newest music out, is. It would further focus on Middle Class (B) and the Lower Working
Class (C1). This would be due top the content that would be in the magazine, and its relevance to the audience. As it focuses on these ages, it will allow the
readers that have been reading for years, and those who are new, to be open to all the news and all of the new content relevant to their favourite genre and
also their favourite artists.
Hartley’s Theory,
Age: Generally the focused age group for this magazine would be 16-30 as this is the main focus of ages for the Hip Hop genre, because these are the years
where young adults and University graduates would be interested in this music genre due to the news and style of life it brings about. It would also focus on
people who enjoy the music that originated within the 80’s/90’s era of Hip-Hop and Rap.
Gender: This could hugely vary as nowadays both males and females are interested in Hip Hop music, but still it is categorically a male based genre due to
the attitude of the artists and the lyrics provided by them in their songs. This is because, they glamorise the lifestyle of money, drugs, guns, gangs and sexual
interests, which female listeners wouldn’t like to hear as it refers to gestures and actions towards the females of our generation, almost being used like
pawns on a chess board and not being treated fairly or equally like men would treat each other or themselves. So specifically the magazine would be
focusing on a predominantly male based audience as this is what the content is most relevant to and this is the gender that would take the most interest in it
too.
Class: As a magazine it would be generally focused on middle-working class and young adults as most don’t yet work. This further connotes a reason as to
why it has focused on these two classes, as between these age groups they are into the ‘trends’ of the world, and Hip-Hop styled music and artists. These
artists have since influenced our generation with ideas towards clothing and new branding such as Drake’s and OVO’s range that was recently released,,
which has been created with the clothing style he wears and his fans want to see him in. It further opens up a way for his fans to buy something of his to
then have for life possibly. Therefore showing their loyalty and love towards this artist.
Target Audience
Katz’ Uses & Gratifications Theory:
Personal Identification: The reader can relate to the magazine and its contents as it is specifically based on Hip-Hop and Rap based themes, therefore only people
interested in these topics will be reading the magazine and relate to the news and content within it.
Personal Relationship: The reader would be reading the magazine in order to get closer with their favourite artist and the news surrounding them at that time. It
is also going to be relevant to a new release of an album or single from the artist which would bring the reader closer to them as they would be reading into
reviews and criticisms on this new content which the artist would also be reading in order to improve on what they did wrong, next time.
Inform & Educate: The reader would be learning something from reading the content in the magazine as they would be reading up on news on their favourite
artist or generally the rap ‘scene’ which is relevant to many artists.
Diversion: If the reader is reading some content or text on their favourite artist they would almost get ‘lost’ within the text as they would be so interested in it,
due to the referral to news on their favourite artist.
Audience Theory:
Socio-economic Needs: The magazine in general would be for an audience within the Middle Class (B) and the Lower Working Class (C1). This would be due to the
content that they include within the magazine, as it is generally relevant to an age group of people who have just left University, are still in University, or have just
left school. It would then gradually build up in age relevance as it would depend on the person and their taste in music, also if they are actually interested in Hip-
Hop and Rap music and all the content relevant to it, which the magazine solely provides.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs,
Social Climbers: The reader would be driven by what they see in this magazine as it very much would revolve around their taste in music and content they wish to
see. This would improve their status in society as it would mean that they feel ‘special’ or ‘important’ when they buy or read this magazine. By doing this it would
allow them to say to their peers that they do in fact read this magazine which is related to a B or C1 class person, therefore making them a higher class person just
by buying this magazine.
Target Audience Of Magazine
Psychographics
So, when looking at psychographics, I would be comparing this to my magazine of inspiration and how
that magazine adapts to these certain categories of audience, so which ones specifically relate to their
target audience.
Succeeders: I feel like Q’s target audience would mainly be people who look to succeed, in a sense that
they look at having high aims or goals, and this is due to their favorite artists or artist being in this
magazine, therefore they would aspire to be like them and succeed on such a big scale, as they have
such a great work ethic and are willing to put their all into making this happen. So, they would be aiming
to see themselves succeed and be like their favorite artist, but I feel like this could vary between
professionals and youngsters who are looking to make a change in their lives and the lives of others, and
the seek to do this by succeeding in their dreams and becoming what they want to be.
Reformers: Further, people who are reformers would also come under Q’s audience and this is because
of the social awareness, freedom and their selection of good quality. I chose specifically those 3 sub-
categories to look at because, they describe how someone would look at an artist who is succeeding
majorly in their genre and their world, therefore they would go further into looking up information on
them and wanting to find out more about them, their life and how they came about to be how they are,
and how that brought them to say the words that they are saying in their lyrics, but further how it made
them so big and well known to so many people. So they look further into these artists in order to find
out why they are such good people, and entertainers, in a sense that they have gone through so much
that we can learn from them, therefore making them a quality ‘product’ to the readers.
Resigned: Finally, I would look at the ‘resigned’ to being a part of Q’s audience because they look to see
the older things that go on, and quite frequently, Q tends to release content relevant to the older
generation Artists, therefore drawing the resigned audience in to this content, as they look to find out
more and newer information about their favorite artist from ‘Back in the Day’ but also artists that are
new, up and coming or have very suddenly ‘Blown Up’ in the Music Industry. This would allow them to
reminisce on the days which they had such good times listening to these artists.
House Style
Color Scheme: The magazine would consist of a color scheme that has the colors of Red, White and Black on it, as this would convey
the use of the general Hip-Hop and Rap theme color scheme that can be seen in most of the album covers of artists, on the previous
moodboard slides. This specific color scheme seems to be very popular within the use of the album covers and also magazines such as
Q Magazine, XXL, or even Vibe Magazine, therefore showing the popularity of the color scheme that would be used, as it is very
common within the Rap and Hip Hop community, be in within the actual music side or just the media content and coverage of it all.
This is also evident through the use of these colors in logos and graphics that all 3 of those magazines use in their Websites, Magazines,
Media, Online Content and Social Media.
Font Style: From these two selections of fonts for each magazine, “NXT EP” and “313”, I will be choosing one of each font that I would
like to, or prefer to use in my final magazine front cover and double page spread (DPS). From the two rows above, I have chosen, the
“American Captain” font for “NXT EP”, as this has clean, cut edges that will bring that almost harsh connotation towards the magazine
and almost describe what sort of content will be found inside. Next for “313” I have chosen to use the “Funk Machine” font, due to its
curvature and the sort of ‘old’ style it has to it, which would be relevant to the connotations behind ‘313’, as it is Detroit’s area code,
and Detroit is quite an old and run down city, therefore showing its age and relevance to its meaning.
Social Media: In order to achieve good publicity for the magazine and get a name that is well known for it, an app will be developed for
it over time, further we will create a Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube account in which all the most recent content will be
released on as well as news and stories on artists that are high in-demand at the moment. This will ensure that our customers will be
able to keep up with news from their favorite artists before the newest issue of the magazine comes out, and so they can look ahead
into finding out more when the full magazine issue is released and that story is mentioned in it.

Draft Interview for DPS
• Draft Interview for NXT EP & 313 Magazines.
• Me: Hi Billy, how are you?
• Billy: Hi Stam, I am good thank you, you aight?
• Me: Yes I am good thank you. So, rumors have been going around, and I have heard that you are soon to release a
new album, but are undecided of its date? Is this right?
• Billy: Yes, this is right. I am still deciding when I should release this album, and I am still not sure what songs to put in
it. The record is crazy. There are features with other artists, which will remain unnamed, but I am still to pick what
tracks will make it to the final cut of the record. It’s crazy, simply crazy.
• Me: Have you decided on a name for this album? Lately people are getting hyped up about new albums, but
specifically names. Many rappers like you hold back titles until the last moment. What are you planning to do in
relation to the title of the record?
• Billy: Hmm, to be honest, there’s nothing much to say. The name will come out when the time is right. And that is the
only thing I will say about the release. However, it will be special.
• Me: I have a feeling that there will be some relation to previous records or a project you worked on in the past, and
we are talking years ago, but definitely something special.
• Billy: Well, you could say that, but it’s unexpected and I will say nothing about it. Instead I will refer to it as something
‘Special’ again.
• Me: Okay, well tell us about the last single you released? Were there any specific references to certain people in it?
We all felt like there was a few digs at people.
• Billy: Wow, already on to that yeah? Cool, ‘aight. Well, what’s to say? I said what I said, and it remains forever in the
song. I say what I want to say and it remains. I don’t care about what others think, and don’t even think of this as
being a rude comment or some sh**, I’m simply saying what I wan’ say so I can clear this up.
• Me: Okay, okay. So, in the studio… What actually happens, how do you make the records you make?
• Billy: To be honest, there’s nothing much to it. I simply write the lyrics that I feel are relevant to my mood at the time
or from past experiences, or simply the feel of the songs and how it comes across in my mind. The way I write is
simple, as I want the fans to hear the song the way I hear it, and understand why I write the way I write and the lyrics I
use. The rest, I leave to my producers. They do the magic of making the song and lyrics flow together so well. Wait,
can I tell y’all a lil’ something that you and the fans will love?
• Me: Yeah sure, ha-ha. Go for it man!
• Billy: Right so. The next record… it will be released in CD, MP3 all that sh**… but there will be a little bonus on this
one. There will be a deluxe version available and it will be released in a special and limited edition vinyl record for
those hard core fans man!
• Me: Damn! Okay right, so why is this edition so special that you have made it limited?
• Billy: Well, I wanted to leave that as a surprise but, might as well get the fans hyped up right? So, it’s going to have the
vinyl record inside obviously, then there will be a supersized poster of the album cover and of myself, but finally there
will be a 6ft by 10ft flag of the album cover on it.
•
• Me: Wait, so why a flag?
• Billy: For those hardcore fans man! Like I said, this one will be special. The flag will hang on their walls as I plan this record
to be something they will all remember man.
•
• Me: Alright, cool. So what about features, production and track selection of this record?
• Billy: Once again, man. The features will remain unnamed as I want this to be special, but know that there are some big
names in there. The production, will be done by the usual man that helped me initially, but some will be done by me on
some of the more ‘precious’ tracks, and damn! The selection was tough man, we went through, I think, a total of 100 or
so tracks and finished pieces, but also choppy pieces of chorus’, beats or just verses, until I found the right ones to put in
this record. I wanted to be careful about the choice of these due to the fact that it is a special record, for me, and the
fans.
•
• Me: Okay, so we really aren’t getting any extra information are we? Hmm, okay. So what about ideas for a next record
or project? Have you planned in your head to work on anything, or come up with a title and are still unsure?
• Billy: Na man, I’m afraid not, sorry! And well, to be honest man, I was thinking of a couple things, but still ain’t sure! Like, I
was thinking of doing a full colab’ or feature record with either 1 or 2 different guys in the scene at the moment, but I’m
not too sure yet. Lets just say I’m working on it man.
•
• Me: Alright. To finish off, the fans want to know. What the hell is happening with the beef between you and Lil’ Kidzy?
• Billy: Aaa, okay well lets finish on that then. To be honest, sh** just went south man, and honestly a couple lyrics were
thrown between us here and there, dissing, but that’s it from what I can see. I don’t want it to turn into anything more, it
gives the fans something to listen to and react to; it gives everyone something to pay attention to. That’s it, and I hope it
stays that way.
•
• Me: I see, I see. Well, thanks a lot man, I know the fans will appreciate this, and to be honest, I know I enjoyed it. So,
once again thank you man! Hope we talk again soon about some new things!
• Billy: Aight man thanks a lot! But yeah, definitely, speak again real soon after the release of the record.

Photo-shoot Plan ‘NXT EP’
Photo-shoot Plan ‘313’
Date Of Publication: The date of publication will be decided on Monday the 26/12/16 at which point the date will be
decided when the public can get their hands onto the latest issue of the magazine. From the time of this decision and
onwards the editorial team and the publishing team have to work together in order to get all of the content for the magazine
and ensure that it is all put together within this 4 week timeframe. (Monday)
Managing the Schedule: In order to meet the deadline for the magazines release date in 4 weeks time, both teams and the
higher up people of the teams have to work alongside each other and keep on top of the timing for the schedule, so plan out
what will be done when. (26/12/16) (Monday)
Editorial and Budgetary Decision: Here the magazine’s editing team will decide what topics or content will be covered within
this issue of the magazine. They will include things such as the main content of this issue of the magazine, the biggest story
at the moment or the biggest artist at the moment, will end up being on the front cover, and so the main story and headline
will be for this, therefore this decision is key for the team to get correct. (27/12/16) (Tuesday)
Content Acquisition: At this stage the teams get the content from ‘In-House’ and ‘External’ writers whilst working on and
putting in/ deciding on the graphics and the artwork of the magazine. This is a vital stage because the teams have got to get
the artwork and the graphics correct and suited to each cover line/ story and make them relevant to the artist that is being
covered in this story, whilst making it look professional and relevant to the brand (Brand Identity) of the Magazine (NXT EP or
313). (28/12/16 – 5/1/17) (Wednesday - Thursday)
Sub-Editing: This is the next step which involves a ‘Sub-Editor’ or an ‘Editor’ of the magazine, going through the magazine
and checking that all the content is correct by fact, there are no grammatical errors, there is correct grammar and
punctuation use, the correct house style and the page layout of all the pages in the magazine is correct. (6/1/17) (Friday)

Production Plan
Page Layout: In this stage the ‘Layout Staff’ use programs such as ‘InDesign’ or ‘PageMaker’ to typeset and layout all the
pages of the magazine. At this stage the decided adverts from companies get placed into the magazine too which is the way
that the magazine makes a large proportion of its profits, therefore is a key stage too. (9/1/17- 10/1/17) (Monday - Tuesday)
Proofreading: In this stage the ‘Editorial Team’ print out a hard copy of the magazine’s issue in order to read through it until
every member of staff is satisfied that there are no errors within the magazine, and if there are they correct it on the DTP
File. This is a vital stage because it ensures that the layout, content and final product meets the satisfactory needs of the
editorial team before it heads out to the general public for retail. (11/1/17) (Wednesday)
File Emailed To Printer: Here the entire magazine gets sent to the printer who’s job is to print out the magazines' copies.
Here the magazine is ‘Pre-Pressed’ and the magazine is checked to ensure that all fonts and images have gone through
correctly and print out as the rest of the magazine does. They then print out a few copies which get sent back to the
publication’s editor and if that team is satisfied they go ahead and print out the thousands of copies they need to print out in
order to meet the demand of the magazine according to the target market/ audience. (12/1/17- 13/1/17) (Thursday- Friday)
Distribution: In this final stage the printing company will have finished printing and will pack away the magazines and send
them to a warehouse, and from the warehouse they get distributed and sold to the public and this is the point where the
public get access to all of the new content and can catch up an all of the news on their favorite artists. (15/1/17 – 16/1/17)

Calendar Events
There are no other dates in conflict with my magazine being distributed apart from the fact that the final day of the production
plan ends on a Sunday when people generally do not work, which is also the distribution day, meaning that the magazines will
have to be distributed in the early hours of Monday morning in order to for the customer base to get their magazines first thing
in the morning and get their hands on the news they want to get on their favourite artist.
My magazine will be distributed on a Monday which is the day after the final day of the production plan as the final day lands
on a Sunday, therefore the magazines will have to be sent out to retailers the morning after the final day for people to get
their magazines as soon as possible, and for us as a company to get news and reviews on this issue of the Magazine.
My magazine will be released in January 2017, this is a good month to release this issue of the magazine because with a new
year, comes new music and a large number of new artists that are up and coming, will be open to get signed by new labels and
so will be looking to get an interview with a magazine so that they can get their music and their name out as soon as possible
in order to start making money fro themselves. Secondly it’s a good time to publish a magazine because, people will be
expecting new music due to the new year and so will be eager to go into music magazines and find new artists that they would
like or think have potential and so give them a chance and start listening to their music and become one of their fans from a
very early stage in their career.

In order to get a fully functioning team to create a magazine I will need a Publisher.
Publishers are companies or people that prepare and issue books, journals, or music for
sale. I would need Editors and Graphic Designers. Editors are people who are in charge
of and determine the final content of a newspaper, magazine, or multi-author book, and
Graphic Designers are people with the art or skill of combining text and pictures in
advertisements, magazines, or books (Digitally or/ and Physically). Next, I would need
Journalists, Writers and Photographers. Journalists are people who write for
newspapers, magazines, or news websites or prepare news to be broadcast, Writers are
people who write books, stories, or articles as a job or occupation, and finally
Photographers are people who take photographs as a profession or as a job, and can be
self-employed or employed by bigger companies. I then would need people in Marketing
and Advertising. People in marketing generally are people who would deal with getting
the product out and making the next issue sell more than the previous one by
advertising it on things such as social media and advertising who and what will be
included in the next issue, as this will attract more people to go in and buy the magazine.
Advertisers have a similar role as they will be the ones advertising this content on social
media websites such as Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. Finally I
would look at needing people in Finance and people in Human Resources. The people in
Finance are the part of an organization that manages its money. The business functions
of a finance department typically include planning, organizing, auditing, accounting for
and controlling its company's finances. The finance department also usually produces
the company's financial statements. Human Resources are the department of a business
or organization that deals with the hiring, administration, and training of staff.
Printing Quotes and Cost
In order for me to print my magazine, per copy it would cost a
total of, £0.73. As seen to the left from the website I used to get
this information, for 20,000 copies of my magazine to be printed
and delivered it would come to a total of £14,796.19 with
Delivery Fees included in this price. This is because of the paper
and binding that would be used in the magazine, and further the
amount of colour that would be printed, along with the fact that
the colours and paper would be Glossy, instead of standard paper,
which is rougher.

Distribution to Retailer and Cost
I will distribute my magazine to these retailers because:
WH Smith: This retailer is one of the biggest and longest running shops for books, magazines and other types of media in the UK, therefore by
having my magazine retailed in this shop, it will mean that a much larger number of people will be able to see and so buy my magazine because
of the brand recognition from this shop. For a magazine to be retailed in this shop, it must be good and of high quality in all aspects, therefore
ensuring to the customer that what is in this magazine is of high quality and can be trusted content-wise.
HMV: I would place my magazine in HMV for retail because this is one of the most trusted music and media related chain of shops in the UK,
they sell everything from DVDs, CDs, Vinyl Records, to sound systems and other accessories for listening to music and getting the most out of
the newest music technology that out time has to offer. This will be a key shop top retail my magazine in because as a music magazine, I would
want to attract as many people as possible that are music fanatics and are huge fans of a specific genre of music, and so are likely to buy my
magazine due to the fact that it allows them access to the most up-to-date news about their favorite artists.
Where will the magazine be
Marketed?
The magazine will be advertised using social medias such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter. This will all be
achieved through creating separate accounts on each of the social medias, that will be posting news or updates for NXT or 313
only, therefore allowing the fans and readers of the magazine to keep on top of their Hip Hip and Rap news daily, but also keep
on top of any news that we may have for the magazine as a whole, for example a new release date, or when the next issue of
the magazine will be released.
The magazine will also be sold in retail chains such as WH Smiths, Tesco and Waterstones. In order to retail my magazine in
these shops, there will be a set cost and so there will be more expenditure coming out from the magazines profits, therefore
meaning that we lose a bit more money but make more through the numerous sales we receive rom all 3 chains of stores,
nationwide. Through having it in retail chains and stores such as these, it will ensure that the sales of the magazine will rise as
soon as possible due to the popularity and the amount of people that enter stores such as these annually, but also every day.
For example, Tesco has stores in 11 countries, has 476,000+ colleagues, and get an average 78 Million shopping trips per week
across these 11 countries. This would ensure that our magazine flourished and became extremely popular across these 11
countries (and the other countries from WH Smiths and Waterstones), as well as bring in profits for us every year due to the
large amounts of sales.

Advertising Revenue
When looking at advertising, I will look at setting certain costs for the different types of adverts in
my magazine. For example:
FH (Full Page): A full page advert will cost £4,975.00
Half Page: A Half page advert will cost £2,455.00
DPS: A Double Page Spread advert will cost £9,950.00
These will be the set costs for these kinds of adverts for the simple reason of them taking up a
large amount of space within the magazine, but also because they solely provide the income for
the magazine as a whole, along with of course the actual sales of the physical magazine copies
too.
By having adverts in our magazines it will allow us to bring in more income through companies
wanting to advertise their products inside of our magazine, therefore showing an interest in our
magazine and possibly brand. Which in turn could bring about a possible business relationship
with that company and so lead to new opportunities with them, and most likely provide a much
larger and more significant/ stable income for the Magazine as whole, therefore making more
profits.
Advertising in Social Media Platforms
Advertising in social media platforms is a key form of bringing in income for a company nowadays because everyone's lives
revolve around communication through social medias such as Facebook, Snapchat, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, and so on.
Because so many people look at social media everyday, nearly every morning, all through the day, and minutes if not seconds
before they sleep, it is probably one of the most vital places that any company can advertise products or brands on because so
many millions of people will see it, from across the world, at most likely the same exact time.
By placing adverts on social media platforms such as the ones above, it allows another profitable income for the Magazine as a
whole company, therefore improving the Profit to Loss breakdown, by having less losses and more income, most likely
disposable income. Meaning that the income they generate is 100% profit and can be disposed of in any way they wish to use
it, be it in departments of the Company or new Apps for the Magazine or new features with artists or for the company as a
whole, possibly new equipment, and so forth.
Profit and Loss Breakdown
As this is the first year that the magazine will be released in, the loss to profit ratio will be far outbalanced as the loss will be far
bigger compared to the profits that the magazine will bring in for the first year, especially for the first issue as not many people
will know about the magazine as a brand so will not know what its about and what it covers inside, therefore will not be as
interested to buy it, but they could see it as an opportunity to find and buy a new magazine, and possibly subscribe to this new
magazine, and so bring in more profits for the company. When looking at the profits of the first issue, they will be minimal as
the adverts we receive will not be from huge companies, therefore the chances are that we will not a receive a large number of
companies willing to advertise their products in our magazine, therefore having to spend more money on finding new content
for the pages that haven't been filled by adverts.
When looking at the overall costs of the first year to initially set up the business as a whole, there will be a total of £112,226.24
to spend on the first year, because on top of editing programmes and the 30 Computer system for MAC, there are the Adobe
Packages which will offer the staff full access to the, and also the Office space that they will be working in, which comes to
£275.00 a month, but this includes the overall price of all the extras such as the desks and chairs that the staff will be using all
the time, the printers, cameras and other photoshoot equipment and any consumables such as ink, paper and stationary for all
of the employees. We then would have to look at the overall cost of all of the staff all together each month and then the total
expenditure of their salaries each year. The total cost per year for all salaries to be paid out for all staff will come to
£725,000.00, and each month a total of £60,416.00 will be spent on paying staff their monthly salary. This also covers the
printing costs and delivery of the prints, which come to a total of £14,796.19.
Legal and Ethical Issues
• The IPSO (Independent Press Standards Organization), has a set of rules called the Editor’s Code of Practice, in which the editor of a
magazine, newspaper or any other form of media, has to follow a specific set of rules set by this Organization. The code itself is written by
the Editors’ Code Committee and further enforced by the IPSO. The latest version of the Editors’ Code of Practice came into effect on 1
January 2016. the code is there to set the highest professional standards in the publishing industry and ensure that no information is
misinterpreted or misleading, but further that no privacy is breached of other people.
• They focus specifically on the categories of, Accuracy, Privacy, Harassment, Intrusion into grief or shock, Reporting Suicide, Children, Children
in sex cases, Hospitals, Reporting of crime, Clandestine devices and subterfuge, Victims of sexual assault, Discrimination, Financial
journalism, Confidential sources, Witness payments in criminal trials and Payment to criminals. They are all of the categories that are
included in the Editor’s Code of Practice, which include a specific set of rules that the editor must follow, under each category. By having
these rules they are ensuring that no information or facts are misinterpreted about a person, further that no rights are abused and that
respect is shown to people by following their privacy rules, if for example they ask fro some information to not be ‘leaked’ or released to the
public.
• Initially it was the PCC (Press Complaints Commission) that dealt with these rules and set specific standards that editors would have to
follow, and now this has been taken over by the IPSO.

Watermarking
Digital Watermarking is the fact or process of embedding a piece of code in a digital image, video, or audio
file in order to provide copyright information. By doing this it allows the person who embedded the code to
know that the image, or content that they embedded the code in, is strictly theirs and if anyone else tries
to use it, well, they wont because you cannot get rid of watermarks on any kind of content, no matter how
hard you try with editing.
Digital watermarking can be employed for multiple purposes, such as:
• Copyright protection
• Source tracking
• Broadcast tracking, such as watermarked videos from global news organizations
• Hidden communication
There are two types of digital watermarking:
Visible Digital Watermarking: Visible data is embedded as the watermark. This can be a logo or a text that
denotes a digital medium's owner.
Invisible Digital Watermarking: The data embedded is invisible or, in case of audio content, inaudible.
Robust watermarks involve blending signal amplitude with large bandwidth sizes and a short message
length. Frequency domain capabilities and mixed-domain techniques, when added to signals, are believed
to provide the right amount of robustness in order to guard against watermark attacks.
The publisher Playboy has used an invisible form of digital watermarking to detect where its copyrighted
material has been illegally posted on other websites.
Copyright and IP
• “The current act is the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988. The law gives the creators of
literary, dramatic, musical, artistic works, sound recordings, broadcasts, films and typographical
arrangement of published editions, rights to control the ways in which their material may be used.”
• When looking at the use of Copyright in a magazine we would be looking at examples of images and
adverts from big and smaller companies, that have their logo or specific graphics, such as new
products or posters related to content, or even their own content and logo. They would place the
Copyright sign on the footer of this page of content, or on the base of the image, or even
underneath it, therefore allowing people to know that this content or imagery is owned and made
by this company, and cannot be used by other people for commercial uses unless granted so by the
company itself.
• If people do not follow these rules then they can be prosecuted and jailed for using other peoples
content or imagery without their permission. But this can work both ways as companies can use
peoples work from smaller businesses or places of work, without having their authority, and if this is
found out, then the smaller business or company can try and sue the business for what they have
done, or simply ask them to pay a smaller fee towards the use of their content or imagery.

Copyright and IP
• When looking at examples of each Sub-Category of protection, we could look at Criminal Records,
and how they tend to be a major part of how information gets out and twisted about artists or
celebrities. So in order for the magazine to follow these rules about the confidential information
that an artist may state about themselves in an interview, they must not change or misinterpret the
information given to them by the artist, or not publicize it at all if this is the wish of the artist. This
can be due to a few reasons such as the persona of the artist and how they feel it would be
interpreted by their fans or further audience, and this is vital as they do not want to suddenly
disappoint their fans or audience in a sense that it would make them stop listening to this artist’s
music. This is why information such as this, is sometimes strictly between the artist and the person
interviewing them for a magazine or article of a sort.
• Further we could look at how ‘Accurate’ the information that is published, should be, and why.
When an interview is conducted with an artist, the information or facts that they give about certain
topics or specific people, then the information, as before, should not be misinterpreted or given out
falsely. This is because the information would then be false, and the blame would go towards the
artist, instead of the Interviewer, editing team or publishing company, whom may have made the
mistake. Therefore, fans will lose their trust and love for this artist and will most likely not listen to
what they say any longer.

Data Protection Act 1988
The Data Protection Act controls how your personal information is used
by organisations, businesses or the government.
Everyone responsible for using data has to follow strict rules called ‘data
protection principles’. They must make sure the information is:
• Used fairly and lawfully
• Used for limited, specifically stated purposes
• Used in a way that is adequate, relevant and not excessive
• Accurate
• Kept for no longer than is absolutely necessary
• Handled according to people’s data protection rights
• Kept safe and secure
• Not transferred outside the European Economic Area without
adequate protection
There is stronger legal protection for more sensitive information, such as:
• Ethnic background
• Political opinions
• Religious beliefs
• Health

Editors Code Of Practice
• The IPSO (Independent Press Standards Organization), has a set of rules called the Editor’s Code of Practice, in which the
editor of a magazine, newspaper or any other form of media, has to follow a specific set of rules set by this Organization.
The code itself is written by the Editors’ Code Committee and further enforced by the IPSO. The latest version of the Editors’
Code of Practice came into effect on 1 January 2016. the code is there to set the highest professional standards in the
publishing industry and ensure that no information is misinterpreted or misleading, but further that no privacy is breached
of other people.
• They focus specifically on the categories of, Accuracy, Privacy, Harassment, Intrusion into grief or shock, Reporting Suicide,
Children, Children in sex cases, Hospitals, Reporting of crime, Clandestine devices and subterfuge, Victims of sexual assault,
Discrimination, Financial journalism, Confidential sources, Witness payments in criminal trials and Payment to criminals.
They are all of the categories that are included in the Editor’s Code of Practice, which include a specific set of rules that the
editor must follow, under each category. By having these rules they are ensuring that no information or facts are
misinterpreted about a person, further that no rights are abused and that respect is shown to people by following their
privacy rules, if for example they ask fro some information to not be ‘leaked’ or released to the public.
Editors Code Of Practice
• Accuracy: When a magazine such as Q looks to follow the rules of the category of Accuracy, they would have to ensure that they
follow these exact rules that have been set by the IPSO:
i)The Press must take care not to publish inaccurate, misleading or distorted information or images, including headlines not supported
by the text.
ii) A significant inaccuracy, misleading statement or distortion must be corrected, promptly and with due prominence, and — where
appropriate — an apology published. In cases involving IPSO, due prominence should be as required by the regulator.
iii) A fair opportunity to reply to significant inaccuracies should be given, when reasonably called for.
iv) The Press, while free to editorialise and campaign, must distinguish clearly between comment, conjecture and fact.
v) A publication must report fairly and accurately the outcome of an action for defamation to which it has been a party, unless an
agreed settlement states otherwise, or an agreed statement is published.
These rules, if followed, generally ensure that the magazine does’t breach any accuracy rules, in a sense that
they do not publish information that is inaccurate or false, or that makes the person that the information is on,
look bad or worse than they already do, or simply misinterprets the situation. By doing this it ensures that the
reader will get information that is 100% accurate from the magazine, but also ensures that readers of the
magazine will be coming back to read more issues of this magazine due to the information being so accurate
and good. So whilst being strict with what they must include and the rules they must follow when publishing a
magazine, they will get benefits such as a regular customer base.
Editors Code Of Practice
• Privacy: When a magazine such as Q looks to follow the rules of the category of Privacy, they would have to ensure that they follow
these exact rules that have been set by the IPSO:
• i) Everyone is entitled to respect for his or her private and family life, home, health and correspondence, including digital
communications.
• ii) Editors will be expected to justify intrusions into any individual's private life without consent. Account will be taken of the
complainant's own public disclosures of information.
• iii) It is unacceptable to photograph individuals, without their consent, in public or private places where there is a reasonable
expectation of privacy.
Survey Monkey
From the screenshots of the Survey Monkey answers above, we can see that in the first question, all 8 people who answered
said ‘Yes’, that the front covers that I created were relevant to the music genre that they were aimed towards, which shows
me that the front covers had been designed and edited correctly for their purpose of being used for the Hip Hop and Rap
genre. Secondly, when looking at the second question, this looked at my presentation of the Pitch, and how I presented it, but
also if there was anything I could improve on. For example, one person said that I should “Cut down the Umm” in my
presentation, and I agree as this downgrades the presentation and makes me seem unprepared but also anxious. Next,
someone said that I should “Know the figures off the top of” my head, which I should do seeing as though it is MY magazine
that I created and I am pitching to my peers, therefore should know it enough to remember all of the figures from conducting
my initial research in order to see how much everything would cost.
Survey Monkey Continued
Next, when looking at question 3, “How well do
you think I presented my Pitch?”, 1 person gave
me a rating of 7, 2 people gave me a rating of 8,
4 people gave me a rating of 9 and 1 person
gave me a rating of 10. This indicates to me that
I presented my pitch as a whole very well, and
had minimal but crucial mistakes in the
presentation of it, for example the “Umm” and
me standing in front of the interactive
whiteboard, and not fully allowing people to see
the slides of my presentation.
Secondly, when looking at question 4, 2 people
chose to change the Theme of my Front Covers,
2 people then chose to change the Text Font of
my Front Covers, and 2 people chose to change
the Social Media Icons of my Front Covers. This
would indicate to me that maybe they didn’tlike
the color scheme or fonts that I used for my
Front Covers, but also the customized Social
Media Icons that I created specifically to fit the
Background Colors and Theme of the Front
Covers.
Survey Monkey Continued
Then, looking at question 5, “What did you
think was the best part of my Chosen Front
Cover”, 1 person said the Color Scheme, 3
People said the Theme (Majority), 2 People
said the Main Image, and 2 people said the
Front Cover as a Whole. This would indicate
to me that there were some mixed views
about my front cover and that certain people
liked certain bits of it, and some liked the
front cover as a whole.
Secondly, when looking at question 6, 8 out
of 8 people said that “yes” my proposals
were detailed and did cover all of the things
that they should have done in the first place.
This would then indicate to me that I
completed my proposals correctly in order
for them to cover all of the content that they
should be covering, in order to create my
magazine and pitch it well in the end.
Survey Monkey Continued
Finally, when looking at Question 7, 8 out of 8 people that answered, said that
“Yes” they do agree with my final choice Magazine Front Cover and DPS, and that
the reasons behind my choices are relevant and make sense. This would then
indicate to me that I chose the better of the two magazines, which would mean
that it would be more successful in the future, bring in more profit and allow for
newer artists or bigger artists to get involved, and recognize my magazine as a
Brand, and not just a media magazine for Rap and Hip Hop. Further it allows me
to see that the reasons to why I chose this magazine to be my final choice, were
reasonable and good, ,made sense and had meaning behind them, otherwise my
peers wouldn’t agree with me and would have said no, but also would have
chosen the second idea for the magazines, which I believed was the more
unsuccessful one out of the two, even though I preferred the DPS from the
second idea and the Front Cover from the first idea, which I chose as my final
choice.

Unit 30 - UK Media Publishing - LO2

  • 1.
  • 2. Magazine Ideas Color Scheme Due to the representations of the colors and the deeper meanings behind them all, I would go with darker and more vibrant colors, red, white and black would be good examples of these color themes as they connote deeper meanings and are quite relevant themes in the Rap/ Hip- Hop genre. Types Of Images Big named artists, and news headlines related to Rap and Hip-Hop based genres or themes. This will interact with the consumer well as they would want to buy the magazine due to the attraction of the artist or the news headline related to the artist. Further Up-And-Coming artists in the industry that are looking to make a big name for themselves by releasing their first single. SHD (Pronounced Shade): The Masthead of the magazine, was created in order to portray some of the ‘shade’, abuse or unfairly disputed comments against the artists in the Rap industry. Masthead 313 (Area Code of Detroit): A lot of Up-And-Coming artists originate from Detroit, which is where you would find ‘Raw’ talent form younger artists as they come up from tougher neighborhoods, a good example would be Eminem as he was coming up in the mid-to-late 90’s through rap battles and a tough life with his family and work life. STRAPLINE: “The story hidden behind the truth”. NXT EP: This is inspiration from the song title ‘The Next Episode’ By Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Nate Dogg, from Dr. Dre’s album, 2001. This would go into further meaning of the magazine looking into the ‘Next Episode’ of the Industry or Rap Genre. STAPLINE: “Look Ahead to a New Era”. Frequency The magazine would be released every month. This would keep the consumer intact with the news based upon their favorite artists and also allow the ‘press’ to get news and imagery to relate to the stories that would have been heard about within that month and most likely released on the magazine’s website. This would also give time to the editorial team to ensure that the magazine is up to standards and its content is fact not made up or twisted by the authors of the articles. Brand Identity Include the logo on the front cover along with the masthead and slogan of the magazine. This would attract the reader as it would allow them to see just what the magazine is about and what is focuses on, possibly bringing in new readers due to the slogan. Further include the website link on the bottom corner of each page, along with the page number and the Masthead along the top of the page, or double page. Target Audience The magazine would be focusing on a target audience of an age between 16-30 years old, due to the provided content and the general themes within the magazine itself. Typically because these would be the ‘Younger’ Adult ages where people still party and are looking for a good time, so will most likely be invited into buying this magazine in order to fit in and know what the newest music out, is. It would further focus on Middle Class (B) and the Lower Working Class (C1). This would be due top the content that would be in the magazine, and its relevance to the audience.
  • 6. Moodboard Summary 1 • For this Moodboard I used the inspiration of “NXT EP” due to the fact that, the content within it will be relevant to the most up-to- date news headlines or stories in relevance to the Rap/Hip-Hop industry. There will be a large amount of focus on artists that are big, and up-and-coming, specifically to do with new releases from them, hence the name “NXT EP” as it will be looking ahead to what music is really seen as ‘now’ or new, therefore looking into the artists future due to the release of this new album. • I specifically chose these artists because, for example, Yelawolf (Middle image with hat and tattoos on neck), has just recently signed a contract with Eminem’s record Label, Shady Records, and he has just recently got big through this signing and further his single releases with other famous artists such as Lil’ Jon and Travis Barker, whom he has made hit singles with, but further his own, recently released album ‘Love Story’ which has hit very high numbers in the charts, at the time of its release. • Further I used an image of Kendrick Lamar, who has just recently ‘Blown Up’ in the rap scene. Being a rapper from Compton, CA and growing up in those types of neighborhoods, influenced by gangs, drugs and money, he of course grew up listening to NWA, Dr. Dre and Tupac, amongst many other West Coast artists from the 80’s and 90’s. These are the artists that influenced him to become the sensation that he is in the industry at this moment and time, with his most recent album release being ‘To Pimp A Butterfly’, which has become extremely recognized to many artists, and of course Hip-Hop/ Rap fans across the world. So, along with the rest of the pictured artists, A$AP Rocky, Danny Brown, Future, Anderson Paak., and G Eazy, he is growing to be the next ‘father figure’ in this music industry, right next to his inspiration, Dr. Dre himself.
  • 8. Moodboard Summary 2 • For this Moodboard I used the inspiration of “313” due to the fact that, all the content within it would be focused specifically on the new music and the news stories, along with ‘TBT’ (Throw Back To(s)) stories of rappers that have maybe passed away and have had amazing careers relevant to Rap and Hip-Hop. This would attract the target audience as it would take them back to the good old days when music was sampled and strictly original, not like now where artists copy beats, and sample from electronically made beats. So as a magazine, it would be focusing on Rap and Hip-Hop as “NXT EP” would be, except “313” would be looking at the different aspects of it, not just the most up-to-date music. • The reason I used the images of Dr. Dre and Ice Cube, along with their group NWA, is because they almost represent and created the original era of Hip-Hop back in the late 80’s, early 90’s, and now people are starting to look up to and listen to these artists a lot more, purely for the fact that the music they release is strictly original and is made with real talent, unlike music nowadays which is simplistic, auto-tuned and repetitive. • Finally I used the image of the lowrider in the center in order to represent the fact that the magazine, “313” would be looking at content and artists relevant to the music releases and attitudes towards rap and hip-hop from the 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s. Lowriders were predominantly used in Compton and generally the ‘West Coast’ or ‘West Side’ of America, by rappers, gangsters, hustlers and Mexicans, along with people of a black culture, therefore bringing it back to the days of separation between colors and races in the 80’s, 90’s eras.
  • 9. Front Cover Analysis of Magazine of Inspiration From this front cover we can see a clear Masthead and Strapline. The masthead would be one of the most important features on a Magazine front cover as it shows the reader who the magazine is made by, and this links to the Strapline as it is what draws in the reader and lets them know who is on the Front Cover and what other content will be found in this issue magazine. From this front cover we can see that there is the typically large ‘Q’ in a bright vivid red colour which stands out from the rest of the front cover, as the rest of it includes a majority of white, turquoise and pink purples. Further we can see the strapline of the front cover, which would be found at the top right hand corner of the cover, which reads “The Music That Changed My Life”, which is a quote from the interview in the DPS with the artist on the front cover, Tinie Tempah. This is what would attract a reader to pick up the magazine, buy it and read the article. From this front cover I will partially repeat the colour scheme by taking away the use of the res and the white, along with the black from the font that has been used, I will not use the Turquoise or the Pink/ Purple that is seen on the front cover. Further I will repeat the placement of the Masthead and the placement of the ‘Other Content/ Titles’ and the Puff Promotions. What will You Repeat (Steve Neale – 1980). We can see no puff promotions on this Front Cover, except for the titles or briefs that would interest readers to buy the magazine more, as they give little details about the rest of the articles and the rest of the content that would be found further into the magazine. This could be due to the fact that this is from Q Magazine, which is considered a very high class magazine, therefore they would almost not want to fill up the whole cover with puff promotions and irrelevant information. We can see on this front cover that the use of Star Appeal has been used as they have highlighted the “#01” through enlarging the font of it severely in comparison to the rest of the text that can be found on the front cover, and further placing it in front of a completely different colour graphic in comparison to the background and the rest of the front cover. Further Star Appeal is added through enlarging the “Tinie Tempah” font on the front cover, and placing it in front of the main image, therefore showing the importance of just having that name, and how significant it is, but also showing how well known he is, as most people will pick up the magazine and buy it just because it is Tinie Tempah on the Front Cover, and they will not be too bothered about the actual content as such.
  • 10. Denotations and Connotations of a Double Page Spread Credits: On this Double Page Spread, there are no obvious credits being given to the author of the article, not that we can see anyways, through credit will be given to the photographer, as seen underneath the ‘Rap Radar’ logo, in white writing. Drop Capital: On the interview part of the Double Page Spread, we can see a huge letter J being used in the middle of the page, which is in a sense, the Drop Capital for the article, as the first word for it begins with a J (Jay Z, the name of the artist which the article is about). Main Image: We can see the main image is a close-up head shot, which has specifically been done like this in order to capture Jay Z’s facial expression. Further we can see the lighting that has been added to the image, where there is a clear divide between the white natural lighting, and the red lighting, which would almost depict that Jay has a half side to him, which still remains to his original roots of New York, as he is a Brooklyn Rapper, and still has that same rap style in him. Stand First: “The Most Exciting People in Music, JAY – Z” is the Stand First used for this article on Jay Z. We can see this at the top of the article on the right-hand page of the Double Page Spread, and it is clear as the font has been used in a Larger size in comparison to the main body of text. Further we can see ‘Star Appeal’ being used as “Jay Z’s” name is being used in the sentence, and it is highlighted in a different colour (Red), whereas the rest of the text is in black. Quote from the Interview: “Everyone trying to do something new is going to come up against a Noel Gallagher figure in their Life.” is the quote that is used on the left hand page of the Double Page Spread that we can see here. This almost signifies that Jay Z could see himself as the ‘Noel Gallagher’ figure that people come across, which is why they all seem to look up to him, as he is now almost a fatherly figure in Hip Hop and has been placed amongst the greats that came out of New York, such as Biggie Smalls, Nas and so on. So in essence he is saying that it is better that he stays in music as one of the Greats, make some music, but most importantly maintain his image and role in the industry, and bring up new people and allow them to gain recognition. Page Number: We can see the Page Number has been placed at the Bottom-Left hand corner of the right-hand page, which can be seen along-side the Q Logo, the month in which the issue was released in, which is October 2010, and further the website link for Q Magazine, “qthemusic.com”. We cant see a page number or Q promotions on the right-hand page where the main image for the article is found, due to the main image being there. We can further see the colour scheme and the theme of the article being carried through on the Double Page Spread and on the Page Number, Logo and any other promotions, as the colour for the Q logo, is red, as is the article, and the black simple writing and the Block writing for the actual page number is also followed through which gives a more professional look overall on the article. Captions: We can see that there are 2 captions on the left-hand page of the Double Page Spread, one of which says “Everyone trying to do something new is going to come up against a Noel Gallagher figure in their Life.”. Which is also the Quote from the Interview. This, along with the main image and the very bright and vibrant Drop Capital, would be used to attract the reader as this is a direct quote from Jay Z, which would make people want to read further into the article and find out more. The second says “Better Red than Dead: Jay Z Shot Exclusively for Q, New York, July 2010.” which is the title of the Image that has been used, as half of Jay Z in the image, is Red, and the other half is normal.
  • 11. Summary Of Ideas “NXT EP” • Genre: For this magazine the Genre will be purely Rap and Hip-Hop based, and all the content within it will be relevant to the most up- to-date news headlines or stories in relevance to the Rap/Hip-Hop industry. There will be a large amount of focus on artists that are big, and up-and-coming, specifically to do with new releases from them, hence the name “NXT EP” as it will be looking ahead to what music is really seen as ‘now’ or new, therefore looking into the artists future due to the release of this new album. • The Colors of the Magazine: The magazines theme, color scheme, will be strictly looking at a Red, Black and White colors. Due to the representations of the colors and the deeper meanings behind them all, I would go with darker and more vibrant colors, red, white and black would be good examples of these color themes as they connote deeper meanings and are quite relevant themes in the Rap/ Hip-Hop genre. • Target Audience: The magazine would be focusing on a target audience of an age between 16-30 years old, due to the provided content and the general themes within the magazine itself. • Price: As a magazine that focuses solely on Rap and Hip-Hop based themes, and provides nothing other than specific content relevant to these themes, it would intentionally increase the price of the magazine due to the specific content, that is all relevant. So the estimated price for “NXT EP” would have to be £3.99, as this would be a low enough and also affordable price for the intended target audience, therefore allowing more people to buy it. • Size (A4): The magazine would be printed in an A4 size, as this would allow the editors to make their work excellent, due to the small scale they are working with, therefore allowing them to very easily notice any mistakes or editing errors, and so correcting them. It will further allow the magazine to be filled entirely and crammed with content relevant to that month’s issue being released.
  • 12. Summary Of Ideas “313” • Genre: For this magazine the Genre would be focused specifically on the new music and the news stories, along with ‘TBT’ (Throw Back To(s)) stories of rappers that have maybe passed away and have had amazing careers relevant to Rap and Hip-Hop. • The Colors of the Magazine: The magazines theme, color scheme, would be looking at a Red, Black and White colors. • Price: As a magazine that focuses solely on Rap and Hip-Hop based themes, and provides nothing other than specific content relevant to these themes, it would intentionally increase the price of the magazine due to the specific content, that is all relevant. So the estimated price for “313” would have to be £3.99, as this would be a low enough and also affordable price for the intended target audience, therefore allowing more people to buy it. • Size (A4): The magazine would be printed in an A4 size, as this would allow the editors to make their work excellent, due to the small scale they are working with, therefore allowing them to very easily notice any mistakes or editing errors, and so correcting them. It will further allow the magazine to be filled entirely and crammed with content relevant to that months issue being released.
  • 13. Form and Style Of Magazine • The magazine would consist of a color scheme that has the colors of Red, White and Black on it, as this would convey the use of the general Hip-Hop and Rap theme color scheme that can be seen in most of the album covers of artists, on the previous moodboard slides. This specific color scheme seems to be very popular within the use of the album covers and also magazines such as Q Magazine, XXL, or even Vibe Magazine, therefore showing the popularity of the color scheme that would be used, as it is very common within the Rap and Hip Hop community, be in within the actual music side or just the media content and coverage of it all. This is also evident through the use of these colors in logos and graphics that all 3 of those magazines use in their Websites, Magazines, Media, Online Content and Social Media. • Further I would be using a simple layout of style for the front cover and I would be following the simplicity that XXL used when they published their Dr. Dre Issue, as portrayed on the ‘Magazine Of Inspiration’ slide at the start of the presentation. So this would consist of using the following layout of, a clean front cover, with the Main Headline only as text around the Main Image, therefore allowing the reader to focus solely on that story. Secondly a simple back and foreground with the simple logo, therefore allowing the magazine to look professional and attractive to the target audience. I wouldn’t want to go with the exact same front cover style as Q as I wouldn’t necessarily feel it represents the genre of Rap and Hip Hop as I would want it to, on my magazine. In turn I will combine some ideas from both Q and XXL in order to get a front cover that has aspects of both, and further represents the genre in the correct manner, and as intended.

  • 16. Magazine Flat Plan for NXT and 313 Evaluation In my magazine flat plan I have shown all of the pages that would be in the magazine, in the exact layout that they would follow along with any relevant adverts that I have chosen to go into the magazine, whether they cover a third of the page, a half of the page, a full A4 page or the full Double Page Spread. I chose specific adverts such as albums that are big or about to be released in the Rap and Hip Hop genre because people will be reminded of them or see them for the first time and they may be from their favorite artist, therefore allowing them to know more about this artist and more about their new music that will soon be released. I also included adverts from brands that artists from this genre mention in their songs or lyrics, use or are sponsored by, or brands that are relevant and have meaning or a link to this genre, therefore making them vital to include as it finalizes the meaning of the magazine and almost seals it as being a Hip Hop and Rap magazine. I have chosen to include Double Page Spreads that are just posters of certain artists as this would allow for the readers and the target market to simply rip the double page out when they buy the magazine, and have a poster of their favorite artist instantly, therefore symbolizing the meaning of the magazine even further and attracting the target market even more as they know that they will get a free poster of certain artists in the issues of this magazine that will be released in the future and from day 1 of the magazine being initially released, therefore keeping and locking a specific target market that would remain buying this magazine for the simple reason that free posters are included in the magazine, and ads for certain brands, but also information and interviews with their favorite artists of this famous Rap and Hip Hop Genre that everyone is so fond of nowadays.
  • 17. Spending Power of Audience • Psychographics Theory: “Psychographics is the study of personality, values, opinions, attitudes, interests, and lifestyles. Because this area of research focuses on interests, attitudes, and opinions, psychographic factors are also called IAO variables.”. My magazines focuses on the new and up and coming artists in the rap and hip hop industry, and what exactly they are doing to expand the name for themselves, whether it is through promotion or through other ways of making their name bigger and more well known. They also look at old school, or more original artists that have been around a long time, have made a huge name for themselves, some of which have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, for example, rap group NWA, and most recently 2Pac (Tupac Shakur), therefore showing their importance. By focusing on these specific topics, they will be increasing the number of sales for the magazine, and so bringing in more profits, due to the demand that people have to read these top and exclusive stories about such artists. • Socio-economic Needs: “relating to or concerned with the interaction of social and economic factors.”. My magazines would be focusing on several ways to connect with their readers in order to attract more subscribers and also to get new content out to the consumers. We would be looking at ways of advertising new content that would be on our website or that would be in next months issue that we would be releasing, if this is the case we would be releasing snippets of interviews or content relevant to an artist or topic, that would attract the reader to buy the magazine when it is next released in order to get hold of that content and read up on their favorite artist, or new artists that they may have heard good things about through other artists or other people who are influential.
  • 18. Target Audience Of Magazine The magazine would be focusing on a target audience of an age between 16-30 years old, due to the provided content and the general themes within the magazine itself. As it focuses on these ages, it will allow the readers that have been reading for years, and those who are new, to be open to all the news and all of the new content relevant to their favourite genre and also their favourite artists. Hartley’s Theory, Age: Generally the focused age group for this magazine would be 16-30 as this is the main focus of ages for the Hip Hop genre, because these are the years where young adults and University graduates would be interested in this music genre due to the news and style of life it brings about. It would also focus on people who enjoy the music that originated within the 80’s/90’s era of Hip-Hop and Rap. Gender: This could hugely vary as nowadays both males and females are interested in Hip Hop music, but still it is categorically a male based genre due to the attitude of the artists and the lyrics provided by them in their songs. This is because, they glamorise the lifestyle of money, drugs, guns, gangs and sexual interests, which female listeners wouldn’t like to hear as it refers to gestures and actions towards the females of our generation, almost being used like pawns on a chess board and not being treated fairly or equally like men would treat each other or themselves. So specifically the magazine would be focusing on a predominantly male based audience as this is what the content is most relevant to and this is the gender that would take the most interest in it too. Class: As a magazine it would be generally focused on middle-working class and young adults as most don’t yet work. This further connotes a reason as to why it has focused on these two classes, as between these age groups they are into the ‘trends’ of the world, and Hip-Hop styled music and artists. These artists have since influenced our generation with ideas towards clothing and new branding such as Drake’s and OVO’s range that was recently released,, which has been created with the clothing style he wears and his fans want to see him in. It further opens up a way for his fans to buy something of his to then have for life possibly. Therefore showing their loyalty and love towards this artist.
  • 19. Target Audience Katz’ Uses & Gratifications Theory: Personal Identification: The reader can relate to the magazine and its contents as it is specifically based on Hip-Hop and Rap based themes, therefore only people interested in these topics will be reading the magazine and relate to the news and content within it. Personal Relationship: The reader would be reading the magazine in order to get closer with their favourite artist and the news surrounding them at that time. It is also going to be relevant to a new release of an album or single from the artist which would bring the reader closer to them as they would be reading into reviews and criticisms on this new content which the artist would also be reading in order to improve on what they did wrong, next time. Inform & Educate: The reader would be learning something from reading the content in the magazine as they would be reading up on news on their favourite artist or generally the rap ‘scene’ which is relevant to many artists. Diversion: If the reader is reading some content or text on their favourite artist they would almost get ‘lost’ within the text as they would be so interested in it, due to the referral to news on their favourite artist. Audience Theory: Socio-economic Needs: The magazine in general would be for an audience within the Middle Class (B) and the Lower Working Class (C1). This would be due to the content that they include within the magazine, as it is generally relevant to an age group of people who have just left University, are still in University, or have just left school. It would then gradually build up in age relevance as it would depend on the person and their taste in music, also if they are actually interested in Hip- Hop and Rap music and all the content relevant to it, which the magazine solely provides. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Social Climbers: The reader would be driven by what they see in this magazine as it very much would revolve around their taste in music and content they wish to see. This would improve their status in society as it would mean that they feel ‘special’ or ‘important’ when they buy or read this magazine. By doing this it would allow them to say to their peers that they do in fact read this magazine which is related to a B or C1 class person, therefore making them a higher class person just by buying this magazine. Target Audience Of Magazine
  • 20. Psychographics So, when looking at psychographics, I would be comparing this to my magazine of inspiration and how that magazine adapts to these certain categories of audience, so which ones specifically relate to their target audience. Succeeders: I feel like Q’s target audience would mainly be people who look to succeed, in a sense that they look at having high aims or goals, and this is due to their favorite artists or artist being in this magazine, therefore they would aspire to be like them and succeed on such a big scale, as they have such a great work ethic and are willing to put their all into making this happen. So, they would be aiming to see themselves succeed and be like their favorite artist, but I feel like this could vary between professionals and youngsters who are looking to make a change in their lives and the lives of others, and the seek to do this by succeeding in their dreams and becoming what they want to be. Reformers: Further, people who are reformers would also come under Q’s audience and this is because of the social awareness, freedom and their selection of good quality. I chose specifically those 3 sub- categories to look at because, they describe how someone would look at an artist who is succeeding majorly in their genre and their world, therefore they would go further into looking up information on them and wanting to find out more about them, their life and how they came about to be how they are, and how that brought them to say the words that they are saying in their lyrics, but further how it made them so big and well known to so many people. So they look further into these artists in order to find out why they are such good people, and entertainers, in a sense that they have gone through so much that we can learn from them, therefore making them a quality ‘product’ to the readers. Resigned: Finally, I would look at the ‘resigned’ to being a part of Q’s audience because they look to see the older things that go on, and quite frequently, Q tends to release content relevant to the older generation Artists, therefore drawing the resigned audience in to this content, as they look to find out more and newer information about their favorite artist from ‘Back in the Day’ but also artists that are new, up and coming or have very suddenly ‘Blown Up’ in the Music Industry. This would allow them to reminisce on the days which they had such good times listening to these artists.
  • 21. House Style Color Scheme: The magazine would consist of a color scheme that has the colors of Red, White and Black on it, as this would convey the use of the general Hip-Hop and Rap theme color scheme that can be seen in most of the album covers of artists, on the previous moodboard slides. Font Style: From these two selections of fonts for each magazine, “NXT EP” and “313”, I will be choosing one of each font that I would like to, or prefer to use in my final magazine front cover and double page spread (DPS). From the two rows above, I have chosen, the “American Captain” font for “NXT EP”, as this has clean, cut edges that will bring that almost harsh connotation towards the magazine and almost describe what sort of content will be found inside. Next for “313” I have chosen to use the “Funk Machine” font, due to its curvature and the sort of ‘old’ style it has to it, which would be relevant to the connotations behind ‘313’, as it is Detroit’s area code, and Detroit is quite an old and run down city, therefore showing its age and relevance to its meaning. Social Media: In order to achieve good publicity for the magazine and get a name that is well known for it, an app will be developed for it over time, further we will create a Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube account in which all the most recent content will be released on as well as news and stories on artists that are high in-demand at the moment. This will ensure that our customers will be able to keep up with news from their favorite artists before the newest issue of the magazine comes out, and so they can look ahead into finding out more when the full magazine issue is released and that story is mentioned in it.

  • 29. Draft Interview for DPS • Draft Interview for NXT EP & 313 Magazines. • Me: Hi Billy, how are you? • Billy: Hi Stam, I am good thank you, you aight? • Me: Yes I am good thank you. So, rumors have been going around, and I have heard that you are soon to release a new album, but are undecided of its date? Is this right? • Billy: Yes, this is right. I am still deciding when I should release this album, and I am still not sure what songs to put in it. The record is crazy. There are features with other artists, which will remain unnamed, but I am still to pick what tracks will make it to the final cut of the record. It’s crazy, simply crazy. • Me: Have you decided on a name for this album? Lately people are getting hyped up about new albums, but specifically names. Many rappers like you hold back titles until the last moment. What are you planning to do in relation to the title of the record? • Billy: Hmm, to be honest, there’s nothing much to say. The name will come out when the time is right. And that is the only thing I will say about the release. However, it will be special. • Me: I have a feeling that there will be some relation to previous records or a project you worked on in the past, and we are talking years ago, but definitely something special. • Billy: Well, you could say that, but it’s unexpected and I will say nothing about it. Instead I will refer to it as something ‘Special’ again. • Me: Okay, well tell us about the last single you released? Were there any specific references to certain people in it? We all felt like there was a few digs at people. • Billy: Wow, already on to that yeah? Cool, ‘aight. Well, what’s to say? I said what I said, and it remains forever in the song. I say what I want to say and it remains. I don’t care about what others think, and don’t even think of this as being a rude comment or some sh**, I’m simply saying what I wan’ say so I can clear this up. • Me: Okay, okay. So, in the studio… What actually happens, how do you make the records you make? • Billy: To be honest, there’s nothing much to it. I simply write the lyrics that I feel are relevant to my mood at the time or from past experiences, or simply the feel of the songs and how it comes across in my mind. The way I write is simple, as I want the fans to hear the song the way I hear it, and understand why I write the way I write and the lyrics I use. The rest, I leave to my producers. They do the magic of making the song and lyrics flow together so well. Wait, can I tell y’all a lil’ something that you and the fans will love? • Me: Yeah sure, ha-ha. Go for it man! • Billy: Right so. The next record… it will be released in CD, MP3 all that sh**… but there will be a little bonus on this one. There will be a deluxe version available and it will be released in a special and limited edition vinyl record for those hard core fans man! • Me: Damn! Okay right, so why is this edition so special that you have made it limited? • Billy: Well, I wanted to leave that as a surprise but, might as well get the fans hyped up right? So, it’s going to have the vinyl record inside obviously, then there will be a supersized poster of the album cover and of myself, but finally there will be a 6ft by 10ft flag of the album cover on it. • • Me: Wait, so why a flag? • Billy: For those hardcore fans man! Like I said, this one will be special. The flag will hang on their walls as I plan this record to be something they will all remember man. • • Me: Alright, cool. So what about features, production and track selection of this record? • Billy: Once again, man. The features will remain unnamed as I want this to be special, but know that there are some big names in there. The production, will be done by the usual man that helped me initially, but some will be done by me on some of the more ‘precious’ tracks, and damn! The selection was tough man, we went through, I think, a total of 100 or so tracks and finished pieces, but also choppy pieces of chorus’, beats or just verses, until I found the right ones to put in this record. I wanted to be careful about the choice of these due to the fact that it is a special record, for me, and the fans. • • Me: Okay, so we really aren’t getting any extra information are we? Hmm, okay. So what about ideas for a next record or project? Have you planned in your head to work on anything, or come up with a title and are still unsure? • Billy: Na man, I’m afraid not, sorry! And well, to be honest man, I was thinking of a couple things, but still ain’t sure! Like, I was thinking of doing a full colab’ or feature record with either 1 or 2 different guys in the scene at the moment, but I’m not too sure yet. Lets just say I’m working on it man. • • Me: Alright. To finish off, the fans want to know. What the hell is happening with the beef between you and Lil’ Kidzy? • Billy: Aaa, okay well lets finish on that then. To be honest, sh** just went south man, and honestly a couple lyrics were thrown between us here and there, dissing, but that’s it from what I can see. I don’t want it to turn into anything more, it gives the fans something to listen to and react to; it gives everyone something to pay attention to. That’s it, and I hope it stays that way. • • Me: I see, I see. Well, thanks a lot man, I know the fans will appreciate this, and to be honest, I know I enjoyed it. So, once again thank you man! Hope we talk again soon about some new things! • Billy: Aight man thanks a lot! But yeah, definitely, speak again real soon after the release of the record.
  • 33. Date Of Publication: The date of publication will be decided on Monday the 26/12/16 at which point the date will be decided when the public can get their hands onto the latest issue of the magazine. From the time of this decision and onwards the editorial team and the publishing team have to work together in order to get all of the content for the magazine and ensure that it is all put together within this 4 week timeframe. (Monday) Managing the Schedule: In order to meet the deadline for the magazines release date in 4 weeks time, both teams and the higher up people of the teams have to work alongside each other and keep on top of the timing for the schedule, so plan out what will be done when. (26/12/16) (Monday) Editorial and Budgetary Decision: Here the magazine’s editing team will decide what topics or content will be covered within this issue of the magazine. They will include things such as the main content of this issue of the magazine, the biggest story at the moment or the biggest artist at the moment, will end up being on the front cover, and so the main story and headline will be for this, therefore this decision is key for the team to get correct. (27/12/16) (Tuesday) Content Acquisition: At this stage the teams get the content from ‘In-House’ and ‘External’ writers whilst working on and putting in/ deciding on the graphics and the artwork of the magazine. This is a vital stage because the teams have got to get the artwork and the graphics correct and suited to each cover line/ story and make them relevant to the artist that is being covered in this story, whilst making it look professional and relevant to the brand (Brand Identity) of the Magazine (NXT EP or 313). (28/12/16 – 5/1/17) (Wednesday - Thursday) Sub-Editing: This is the next step which involves a ‘Sub-Editor’ or an ‘Editor’ of the magazine, going through the magazine and checking that all the content is correct by fact, there are no grammatical errors, there is correct grammar and punctuation use, the correct house style and the page layout of all the pages in the magazine is correct. At this stage the decided adverts from companies get placed into the magazine too which is the way that the magazine makes a large proportion of its profits, therefore is a key stage too. (9/1/17- 10/1/17) (Monday - Tuesday) Proofreading: In this stage the ‘Editorial Team’ print out a hard copy of the magazine’s issue in order to read through it until every member of staff is satisfied that there are no errors within the magazine, and if there are they correct it on the DTP File. This is a vital stage because it ensures that the layout, content and final product meets the satisfactory needs of the editorial team before it heads out to the general public for retail. (11/1/17) (Wednesday) File Emailed To Printer: Here the entire magazine gets sent to the printer who’s job is to print out the magazines' copies. Here the magazine is ‘Pre-Pressed’ and the magazine is checked to ensure that all fonts and images have gone through correctly and print out as the rest of the magazine does. They then print out a few copies which get sent back to the publication’s editor and if that team is satisfied they go ahead and print out the thousands of copies they need to print out in order to meet the demand of the magazine according to the target market/ audience. (12/1/17- 13/1/17) (Thursday- Friday) Distribution: In this final stage the printing company will have finished printing and will pack away the magazines and send them to a warehouse, and from the warehouse they get distributed and sold to the public and this is the point where the public get access to all of the new content and can catch up an all of the news on their favorite artists. • 37. Calendar Events There are no other dates in conflict with my magazine being distributed apart from the fact that the final day of the production plan ends on a Sunday when people generally do not work, which is also the distribution day, meaning that the magazines will have to be distributed in the early hours of Monday morning in order to for the customer base to get their magazines first thing in the morning and get their hands on the news they want to get on their favourite artist. My magazine will be distributed on a Monday which is the day after the final day of the production plan as the final day lands on a Sunday, therefore the magazines will have to be sent out to retailers the morning after the final day for people to get their magazines as soon as possible, and for us as a company to get news and reviews on this issue of the Magazine. My magazine will be released in January 2017, this is a good month to release this issue of the magazine because with a new year, comes new music and a large number of new artists that are up and coming, will be open to get signed by new labels and so will be looking to get an interview with a magazine so that they can get their music and their name out as soon as possible in order to start making money fro themselves. Secondly it’s a good time to publish a magazine because, people will be expecting new music due to the new year and so will be eager to go into music magazines and find new artists that they would like or think have potential and so give them a chance and start listening to their music and become one of their fans from a very early stage in their career.

  • 40. Staff and Cost Staff Salary Publisher X1 £45,000 Editors X6 £26,000//156K Journalists (Internal or External) X4 £25,000//100K Writers (Internal or External) X4 £25,000//100K Photographers X3 £27,000//81K Marketing X2 £16,000//32K Advertising (Social Media) X2 £16,000//32K Designers (Graphics) X3 £30,000//90K Finances X3 £19,000//57K Human Resources X2 £16,000//32K Source: http://smallbusiness.chron.com/staff- magazine-37120.html In order to get a fully functioning team to create a magazine I will need a Publisher. Publishers are companies or people that prepare and issue books, journals, or music for sale. I would need Editors and Graphic Designers. Editors are people who are in charge of and determine the final content of a newspaper, magazine, or multi-author book, and Graphic Designers are people with the art or skill of combining text and pictures in advertisements, magazines, or books (Digitally or/ and Physically). Next, I would need Journalists, Writers and Photographers. Journalists are people who write for newspapers, magazines, or news websites or prepare news to be broadcast, Writers are people who write books, stories, or articles as a job or occupation, and finally Photographers are people who take photographs as a profession or as a job, and can be self-employed or employed by bigger companies. I then would need people in Marketing and Advertising. People in marketing generally are people who would deal with getting the product out and making the next issue sell more than the previous one by advertising it on things such as social media and advertising who and what will be included in the next issue, as this will attract more people to go in and buy the magazine. Advertisers have a similar role as they will be the ones advertising this content on social media websites such as Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. Finally I would look at needing people in Finance and people in Human Resources. The people in Finance are the part of an organization that manages its money. The business functions of a finance department typically include planning, organizing, auditing, accounting for and controlling its company's finances. The finance department also usually produces the company's financial statements. Human Resources are the department of a business or organization that deals with the hiring, administration, and training of staff.
  • 41. Printing Quotes and Cost In order for me to print my magazine, per copy it would cost a total of, £0.73. As seen to the left from the website I used to get this information, for 20,000 copies of my magazine to be printed and delivered it would come to a total of £14,796.19 with Delivery Fees included in this price. This is because of the paper and binding that would be used in the magazine, and further the amount of colour that would be printed, along with the fact that the colours and paper would be Glossy, instead of standard paper, which is rougher. • 42. Distribution to Retailer and Cost I will distribute my magazine to these retailers because: WH Smith: This retailer is one of the biggest and longest running shops for books, magazines and other types of media in the UK, therefore by having my magazine retailed in this shop, it will mean that a much larger number of people will be able to see and so buy my magazine because of the brand recognition from this shop. For a magazine to be retailed in this shop, it must be good and of high quality in all aspects, therefore ensuring to the customer that what is in this magazine is of high quality and can be trusted content-wise. HMV: I would place my magazine in HMV for retail because this is one of the most trusted music and media related chain of shops in the UK, they sell everything from DVDs, CDs, Vinyl Records, to sound systems and other accessories for listening to music and getting the most out of the newest music technology that out time has to offer. This will be a key shop top retail my magazine in because as a music magazine, I would want to attract as many people as possible that are music fanatics and are huge fans of a specific genre of music, and so are likely to buy my magazine due to the fact that it allows them access to the most up-to-date news about their favorite artists.
  • 43. Where will the magazine be Marketed? The magazine will be advertised using social medias such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter. This will all be achieved through creating separate accounts on each of the social medias, that will be posting news or updates for NXT or 313 only, therefore allowing the fans and readers of the magazine to keep on top of their Hip Hip and Rap news daily, but also keep on top of any news that we may have for the magazine as a whole, for example a new release date, or when the next issue of the magazine will be released. The magazine will also be sold in retail chains such as WH Smiths, Tesco and Waterstones. In order to retail my magazine in these shops, there will be a set cost and so there will be more expenditure coming out from the magazines profits, therefore meaning that we lose a bit more money but make more through the numerous sales we receive rom all 3 chains of stores, nationwide. Through having it in retail chains and stores such as these, it will ensure that the sales of the magazine will rise as soon as possible due to the popularity and the amount of people that enter stores such as these annually, but also every day. For example, Tesco has stores in 11 countries, has 476,000+ colleagues, and get an average 78 Million shopping trips per week across these 11 countries. This would ensure that our magazine flourished and became extremely popular across these 11 countries (and the other countries from WH Smiths and Waterstones), as well as bring in profits for us every year due to the large amounts of sales. • 44. Advertising Revenue When looking at advertising, I will look at setting certain costs for the different types of adverts in my magazine. For example: FH (Full Page): A full page advert will cost £4,975.00 Half Page: A Half page advert will cost £2,455.00 DPS: A Double Page Spread advert will cost £9,950.00 These will be the set costs for these kinds of adverts for the simple reason of them taking up a large amount of space within the magazine, but also because they solely provide the income for the magazine as a whole, along with of course the actual sales of the physical magazine copies too. By having adverts in our magazines it will allow us to bring in more income through companies wanting to advertise their products inside of our magazine, therefore showing an interest in our magazine and possibly brand. Which in turn could bring about a possible business relationship with that company and so lead to new opportunities with them, and most likely provide a much larger and more significant/ stable income for the Magazine as whole, therefore making more profits.
  • 45. Advertising in Social Media Platforms Advertising in social media platforms is a key form of bringing in income for a company nowadays because everyone's lives revolve around communication through social medias such as Facebook, Snapchat, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, and so on. Because so many people look at social media everyday, nearly every morning, all through the day, and minutes if not seconds before they sleep, it is probably one of the most vital places that any company can advertise products or brands on because so many millions of people will see it, from across the world, at most likely the same exact time. By placing adverts on social media platforms such as the ones above, it allows another profitable income for the Magazine as a whole company, therefore improving the Profit to Loss breakdown, by having less losses and more income, most likely disposable income. Meaning that the income they generate is 100% profit and can be disposed of in any way they wish to use it, be it in departments of the Company or new Apps for the Magazine or new features with artists or for the company as a whole, possibly new equipment, and so forth.
  • 46. Profit and Loss Breakdown As this is the first year that the magazine will be released in, the loss to profit ratio will be far outbalanced as the loss will be far bigger compared to the profits that the magazine will bring in for the first year, especially for the first issue as not many people will know about the magazine as a brand so will not know what its about and what it covers inside, therefore will not be as interested to buy it, but they could see it as an opportunity to find and buy a new magazine, and possibly subscribe to this new magazine, and so bring in more profits for the company. When looking at the profits of the first issue, they will be minimal as the adverts we receive will not be from huge companies, therefore the chances are that we will not a receive a large number of companies willing to advertise their products in our magazine, therefore having to spend more money on finding new content for the pages that haven't been filled by adverts. When looking at the overall costs of the first year to initially set up the business as a whole, there will be a total of £112,226.24 to spend on the first year, because on top of editing programmes and the 30 Computer system for MAC, there are the Adobe Packages which will offer the staff full access to the, and also the Office space that they will be working in, which comes to £275.00 a month, but this includes the overall price of all the extras such as the desks and chairs that the staff will be using all the time, the printers, cameras and other photoshoot equipment and any consumables such as ink, paper and stationary for all of the employees. We then would have to look at the overall cost of all of the staff all together each month and then the total expenditure of their salaries each year. The total cost per year for all salaries to be paid out for all staff will come to £725,000.00, and each month a total of £60,416.00 will be spent on paying staff their monthly salary. This also covers the printing costs and delivery of the prints, which come to a total of £14,796.19.
  • 47. Legal and Ethical Issues • The IPSO (Independent Press Standards Organization), has a set of rules called the Editor’s Code of Practice, in which the editor of a magazine, newspaper or any other form of media, has to follow a specific set of rules set by this Organization. The code itself is written by the Editors’ Code Committee and further enforced by the IPSO. The latest version of the Editors’ Code of Practice came into effect on 1 January 2016. the code is there to set the highest professional standards in the publishing industry and ensure that no information is misinterpreted or misleading, but further that no privacy is breached of other people. • They focus specifically on the categories of, Accuracy, Privacy, Harassment, Intrusion into grief or shock, Reporting Suicide, Children, Children in sex cases, Hospitals, Reporting of crime, Clandestine devices and subterfuge, Victims of sexual assault, Discrimination, Financial journalism, Confidential sources, Witness payments in criminal trials and Payment to criminals. They are all of the categories that are included in the Editor’s Code of Practice, which include a specific set of rules that the editor must follow, under each category. By having these rules they are ensuring that no information or facts are misinterpreted about a person, further that no rights are abused and that respect is shown to people by following their privacy rules, if for example they ask fro some information to not be ‘leaked’ or released to the public. • Initially it was the PCC (Press Complaints Commission) that dealt with these rules and set specific standards that editors would have to follow, and now this has been taken over by the IPSO. https://www.ipso.co.uk/editors-code-of-practice/
  • 48. Watermarking Digital Watermarking is the fact or process of embedding a piece of code in a digital image, video, or audio file in order to provide copyright information. By doing this it allows the person who embedded the code to know that the image, or content that they embedded the code in, is strictly theirs and if anyone else tries to use it, well, they wont because you cannot get rid of watermarks on any kind of content, no matter how hard you try with editing. Digital watermarking can be employed for multiple purposes, such as: • Copyright protection • Source tracking • Broadcast tracking, such as watermarked videos from global news organizations • Hidden communication There are two types of digital watermarking: Visible Digital Watermarking: Visible data is embedded as the watermark. This can be a logo or a text that denotes a digital medium's owner. Invisible Digital Watermarking: The data embedded is invisible or, in case of audio content, inaudible. Robust watermarks involve blending signal amplitude with large bandwidth sizes and a short message length. Frequency domain capabilities and mixed-domain techniques, when added to signals, are believed to provide the right amount of robustness in order to guard against watermark attacks. The publisher Playboy has used an invisible form of digital watermarking to detect where its copyrighted material has been illegally posted on other websites.
  • 49. Copyright and IP • “The current act is the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988. The law gives the creators of literary, dramatic, musical, artistic works, sound recordings, broadcasts, films and typographical arrangement of published editions, rights to control the ways in which their material may be used.” • When looking at the use of Copyright in a magazine we would be looking at examples of images and adverts from big and smaller companies, that have their logo or specific graphics, such as new products or posters related to content, or even their own content and logo. They would place the Copyright sign on the footer of this page of content, or on the base of the image, or even underneath it, therefore allowing people to know that this content or imagery is owned and made by this company, and cannot be used by other people for commercial uses unless granted so by the company itself. • If people do not follow these rules then they can be prosecuted and jailed for using other peoples content or imagery without their permission. But this can work both ways as companies can use peoples work from smaller businesses or places of work, without having their authority, and if this is found out, then the smaller business or company can try and sue the business for what they have done, or simply ask them to pay a smaller fee towards the use of their content or imagery. • 50. Copyright and IP • When looking at examples of each Sub-Category of protection, we could look at Criminal Records, and how they tend to be a major part of how information gets out and twisted about artists or celebrities. So in order for the magazine to follow these rules about the confidential information that an artist may state about themselves in an interview, they must not change or misinterpret the information given to them by the artist, or not publicize it at all if this is the wish of the artist. This can be due to a few reasons such as the persona of the artist and how they feel it would be interpreted by their fans or further audience, and this is vital as they do not want to suddenly disappoint their fans or audience in a sense that it would make them stop listening to this artist’s music. This is why information such as this, is sometimes strictly between the artist and the person interviewing them for a magazine or article of a sort. • Further we could look at how ‘Accurate’ the information that is published, should be, and why. When an interview is conducted with an artist, the information or facts that they give about certain topics or specific people, then the information, as before, should not be misinterpreted or given out falsely. This is because the information would then be false, and the blame would go towards the artist, instead of the Interviewer, editing team or publishing company, whom may have made the mistake. Therefore, fans will lose their trust and love for this artist and will most likely not listen to what they say any longer. Source: https://www.gov.uk/data- protection/the-data-protection-act
  • 51. Data Protection Act 1988 The Data Protection Act controls how your personal information is used by organisations, businesses or the government. Everyone responsible for using data has to follow strict rules called ‘data protection principles’. They must make sure the information is: • Used fairly and lawfully • Used for limited, specifically stated purposes • Used in a way that is adequate, relevant and not excessive • Accurate • Kept for no longer than is absolutely necessary • Handled according to people’s data protection rights • Kept safe and secure • Not transferred outside the European Economic Area without adequate protection There is stronger legal protection for more sensitive information, such as: • Ethnic background • Political opinions • Religious beliefs • Health • Sexual health • Criminal records Source: https://www.gov.uk/data-protection/the-data- protection-act
  • 52. Editors Code Of Practice • The IPSO (Independent Press Standards Organization), has a set of rules called the Editor’s Code of Practice, in which the editor of a magazine, newspaper or any other form of media, has to follow a specific set of rules set by this Organization. • 53. Editors Code Of Practice • Accuracy: When a magazine such as Q looks to follow the rules of the category of Accuracy, they would have to ensure that they follow these exact rules that have been set by the IPSO: i)The Press must take care not to publish inaccurate, misleading or distorted information or images, including headlines not supported by the text. ii) A significant inaccuracy, misleading statement or distortion must be corrected, promptly and with due prominence, and — where appropriate — an apology published. In cases involving IPSO, due prominence should be as required by the regulator. iii) A fair opportunity to reply to significant inaccuracies should be given, when reasonably called for. iv) The Press, while free to editorialise and campaign, must distinguish clearly between comment, conjecture and fact. v) A publication must report fairly and accurately the outcome of an action for defamation to which it has been a party, unless an agreed settlement states otherwise, or an agreed statement is published. These rules, if followed, generally ensure that the magazine does’t breach any accuracy rules, in a sense that they do not publish information that is inaccurate or false, or that makes the person that the information is on, look bad or worse than they already do, or simply misinterprets the situation. By doing this it ensures that the reader will get information that is 100% accurate from the magazine, but also ensures that readers of the magazine will be coming back to read more issues of this magazine due to the information being so accurate and good. So whilst being strict with what they must include and the rules they must follow when publishing a magazine, they will get benefits such as a regular customer base.
  • 54. Editors Code Of Practice • Privacy: When a magazine such as Q looks to follow the rules of the category of Privacy, they would have to ensure that they follow these exact rules that have been set by the IPSO: • i) Everyone is entitled to respect for his or her private and family life, home, health and correspondence, including digital communications. • ii) Editors will be expected to justify intrusions into any individual's private life without consent. Account will be taken of the complainant's own public disclosures of information. • iii) It is unacceptable to photograph individuals, without their consent, in public or private places where there is a reasonable expectation of privacy.
  • 55. Survey Monkey From the screenshots of the Survey Monkey answers above, we can see that in the first question, all 8 people who answered said ‘Yes’, that the front covers that I created were relevant to the music genre that they were aimed towards, which shows me that the front covers had been designed and edited correctly for their purpose of being used for the Hip Hop and Rap genre. Secondly, when looking at the second question, this looked at my presentation of the Pitch, and how I presented it, but also if there was anything I could improve on. For example, one person said that I should “Cut down the Umm” in my presentation, and I agree as this downgrades the presentation and makes me seem unprepared but also anxious. Next, someone said that I should “Know the figures off the top of” my head, which I should do seeing as though it is MY magazine that I created and I am pitching to my peers, therefore should know it enough to remember all of the figures from conducting my initial research in order to see how much everything would cost.
  • 56. Survey Monkey Continued Next, when looking at question 3, “How well do you think I presented my Pitch?”, 1 person gave me a rating of 7, 2 people gave me a rating of 8, 4 people gave me a rating of 9 and 1 person gave me a rating of 10. This indicates to me that I presented my pitch as a whole very well, and had minimal but crucial mistakes in the presentation of it, for example the “Umm” and me standing in front of the interactive whiteboard, and not fully allowing people to see the slides of my presentation. Secondly, when looking at question 4, 2 people chose to change the Theme of my Front Covers, 2 people then chose to change the Text Font of my Front Covers, and 2 people chose to change the Social Media Icons of my Front Covers. This would indicate to me that maybe they didn’tlike the color scheme or fonts that I used for my Front Covers, but also the customized Social Media Icons that I created specifically to fit the Background Colors and Theme of the Front Covers.
  • 57. Survey Monkey Continued Then, looking at question 5, “What did you think was the best part of my Chosen Front Cover”, 1 person said the Color Scheme, 3 People said the Theme (Majority), 2 People said the Main Image, and 2 people said the Front Cover as a Whole. This would indicate to me that there were some mixed views about my front cover and that certain people liked certain bits of it, and some liked the front cover as a whole. Secondly, when looking at question 6, 8 out of 8 people said that “yes” my proposals were detailed and did cover all of the things that they should have done in the first place. This would then indicate to me that I completed my proposals correctly in order for them to cover all of the content that they should be covering, in order to create my magazine and pitch it well in the end.
  • 58. Survey Monkey Continued Finally, when looking at Question 7, 8 out of 8 people that answered, said that “Yes” they do agree with my final choice Magazine Front Cover and DPS, and that the reasons behind my choices are relevant and make sense. This would then indicate to me that I chose the better of the two magazines, which would mean that it would be more successful in the future, bring in more profit and allow for newer artists or bigger artists to get involved, and recognize my magazine as a Brand, and not just a media magazine for Rap and Hip Hop. Further it allows me to see that the reasons to why I chose this magazine to be my final choice, were reasonable and good, ,made sense and had meaning behind them, otherwise my peers wouldn’t agree with me and would have said no, but also would have chosen the second idea for the magazines, which I believed was the more unsuccessful one out of the two, even though I preferred the DPS from the second idea and the Front Cover from the first idea, which I chose as my final choice.
