3. FGD
The Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD) is a
process of removal of sulphur dioxide (SO2)
from the flue gas
4. Need for FGD
Combustion of fuel having sulphur results in SO2
Emission
95 – 96 % of sulphur is converted into SO2
Sulphur content in Indian coal ranges from 0.4 to 0.5 %
and in imported coal it is more than 0.6 %.
Coal with 0.5 % sulphur, generates SO2 of range 1200 –
1600 mg/Nm3
SO2 emission results in Acid-rain, corrosion of buildings
& structures and affect human health

Wet Limestone based FGD
9. Critical Equipment of FGD system
Booster Fan
Gas to Gas Heater (GGH)
Slurry Recirculation pump
Wet Ball Mill
Gypsum de-watering system
Oxidation Blower
Mist eliminator
Agitator
10. Why Oxidation Blower is required
Oxidation process plays vital role in achieving desired
purity of gypsum
Gypsum purity also depends on flue gas composition,
dust content, purity of limestone etc.
For a given conditions, bowing sufficient oxidation air with
proper distribution helps in converting majority of sulphite
(SO3) into sulphate (SO4)
11. Oxidation Blower quantity
Number of oxidation blowers depends on number of
Absorbers
Each Absorber shall be provided with One working and
One standby blower
12. Oxidation Blower / Compressor
Depending on the pressure ratio, Compressor / Blower
terminology will be used
When used for low pressure applications - it is called
Blower
When used for high pressure applications - it is called
compressor
13. Type Blowers used in FGD
Single stage, integrally geared, single or dual vane
centrifugal type
Positive displacement type with / without VFD. VFD is
required when flow control is required
Multistage centrifugal compressor with / without VFD
Reference is required for flow and head
19. Major items of Blower Package
Suction filter and silencer
Suction throttle valve
Blower
Discharge silencer
Blow-off system
Quenching system
Lube Oil System
Gear Box
20. Major items of Blower Package
Acoustic enclosure
Quenching System
21. Blower Driver - Motor
Generally if the Motor rating is <= 200 kW, Motor is in
HPEP scope
If the Motor rating is > 200 kW, Motor is in BHEL Bhopal
scope
22. Major components of Blower
Casing
End Covers
Diaphragms
Rotor and Impellers
Journal Bearings
Thrust Bearings
Coupling
23. Blower Performance
Guarantees for FGD system will be:
SO2 removal efficiency
Limestone consumption
Auxiliary power consumption
Blower power shall be verified during FGD package
performance test as part of auxiliary power consumption
Blower testing at shop shall be as per approved quality
plan
