2. Front album cover
Firstly I took a screen grab from my music video which I felt
conveyed my entire idea the best, this is from the opening
scene where the girl is waiting for her boyfriend. The
atmosphere looks cold and urban, whilst the character is
dressed in a very indie style. I then opened this within the
editing software of picasa and drained the colouring to add an
artistic effect. This also focused on how ‘cold’ and horrid the
situation the girl is in within the storyline, reflecting the music
within the album will be serious and have a mature tone.
Secondly, I decided to blur the edges of the image to allow the
main focus to be on the attractive actor. This also created the
girl to look as if she is in her own little bubble, similar to her
situation in the video.
Thirdly, to keep the cover as simple as possible and be mostly
focused on the music (generically the trait within indie music), I
added a basic font for the name of the band along the top of
the frame and the name of the album (named after the song of
which I used in my music video) in a chalkboard font. By using
this, it looks just thrown together last minute and laid-back,
reflecting the style of music the album will showcase. The blue
is both a mature and uni-sex colour, appealing to all audiences
and not discriminating against anyone.
3. Spine
This was simply cropped from
the front cover image and
rotated in order to show
continuity and quickly show to
those flicking through a rack of
cd’s the artist’s name in and
easy to read font.
4. Back Cover
Firstly here I again performed a screen grab and opened
in picasa. This image was chosen due to it’s simplicity and
linking to how this is the back page of the album whilst
showing the actors backs.
Secondly, I changed the contrast, lighting and shadows of
the actors within the image to make it ‘pop’ and stand out
from the background behind. This also then allowed a
darker setting for the tracklist to sit on.
Thirdly I added the text, continuing with the font from the
front page to allow continuity. This layout again needed to
be simple and basic to be easily read and compare to
other successful indie album covers.
I also added the website link for the band and a barcode
to allow the product to be scanned and paid for whilst also
promoting other aspects linking to the artist.
5. Inside Covers
For my imagery on the inside of my digipack, I
wanted it to be simple with no effects, almost similar
to a child’s picture book to reflect the childish
behaviour of abuse within the storyline. By using this
style, it also allows the audience to interpret what
they think of the storyline, rather than being told in
fonts exactly what’s happening and why. (Linking to
the uses and gratification theory).
To make both images stand out more from their
original screenshot, I decided to warmify them both in
colour by changing the saturation levels, as well as
darkening the shadowed areas to make the image
look more artistic and within the indie genre.
