Warm Up Leader Exercise: Leader Hypnotizes 2 Followers
STEP 1 (15 Min) Exercise & Canvas
Boal Warm up: Colombian hypnosis by Leader of Two
Followers (Get in Groups of 3)
One leader holds their lave hand palm forward, fingers upright,
anything between 10 to 20 inches away from the face of
another, who is then as if hypnotized and must keep his face
constantly the same distance from the hand of the hypnotizer,
hairline level with her fingertips, chin more or less level with
the base of her palm. And with right hand same for other
follower. The hypnotizer starts a series of movements with both
hands, up and down, right and left, backwards and forwards,
leader hand vertical in relation to the ground, then horizontal,
4. then diagonal, etc. – the 2 followers must contort their body in
every way possible to maintain the same distance between face
and hand, so that face and hand remain parallel. Change Roles,
until everyone has been Colombian Leader
DEBRIEF: Write silently, without talking, in your own
notebook. Answer CANVAS 1a question: What is the UNTOLD
STORY of Your REAL LIFE DOMINANT WILL & COUNTER-
WILL Columbian hypnosis? I.e. Share a living UNTOLD story
exercise brought up.
After trio wrote this out (silently), exchange, and read your 3
partner's UNTOLD REAL LIFE STORY, while they read yours.
Still no talking.
Answer 2nd Canvas question: How was their UNTOLD REAL
LIFE STORY different from yours, and/or similar to yours?
The WILL is DIALECTICAL to Counter-WILL
THE WILL “is essentially dynamic, dialectical, conflictual, and
consequently theatrical” (Boal 200 Exercises, p. 40).
“For the actor truly to live on stage, he must find the counter-
will to each of his wills” (p. 43)

The Crane and The Crow
The Crane and the Crow
Karl-Erik Svieby & Tex Skuthorpe
Garraagaa, the crane was a great fisherman. He could catch
many fish by hunting them out, with his feet, from underneath
the logs in the creek. One day, when he had a great many on the
bank of the creek, Waan, the crow, which was white at that
6. time, came up and asked the crane to give him some fish. The
crane told the crow to wait until the fish were cooked but the
crow was hungry and impatient. He kept bothering the crane,
who told him to wait. Eventually the crane turned his back. The
crow sneaked up and was just about to steal a fish, when the
crane saw him, seized a fish and hit the crow right across the
eyes with it. The crow felt blinded for a few minutes. He fell on
the burnt black grass around the fire and rolled over and over in
his pain. When he got up, his eyes were white and the rest of
him black, as crows have been ever since.
Continued
The crow was determined to have his revenge. He waited for his
chance and one day saw the crane fast asleep on his back with
his mouth wide open. He crept quietly up to him and stuck a
fish bone right across the root of the crane’s tongue. The crane
woke up and when he opened his mouth to yawn he felt like
choking. He tried to get the thing out of his throat and, in the
effort, he made a strange scraping noise – ‘gah-rah-gah, gah-
rah-gah’. But the fish bone could not be moved and still the
only noise a crane can make is ‘gah-rah-gah’ – the name by
which he is known
What is the Meaning of the Storytelling?
Put your name on a piece of paper
Without talking, write down the meaning of the story.
Find someone you have never spoken to before, and share the
meaning of the story.
Write down what is similar or different
Decide who will report out
7. In Native People’s Storytelling
“People would gain access to the meaning only through hard
intellectual work” (Karl-Erik Svieby & Tex Skuthorpe, 2007: p.
51).
Children learn the stories verbatim
Elders then teach them the 4 Hidden Levels of Meaning
STORYTELLING 101
Storytelling in its wholeness has 3 parts:
THE NARRATIVE & COUNTERNARRATIVE (The crane’s
narrative & the crow’s counternarrative), done in a plot
structure with sequence of Beginning, Middle, & End).
SHALLOW-SURFACE MEANING
THE LIVING STORY (The place, the time, and the ‘mattering’
of how people live this story in their own lives of relation to
ecosystem. FIRST LEVEL OF DEEPER MEANING
ANTENARRATIVE (Meaning that is constitutive of the
narrative & story, that comes antecedent and lies BEFORE,
BETWEEN, BENEATH, and in BETS on possible futures
arriving, and which future by OBSERVER EFFECT, is a
waveform collapsed into event-hood. Crane collapse one wave,
and crow another wave, and together they collapse their
waveforms into unsustainable eventhood. THIRD AND
FOURTH LEVEL OF DEEPER MEANING
There are Four Levels of Meaning
LITERAL PLOT OF DRAMATIC ACTION (narrative-sequence
of events, rising drama to climax of vengeance; animal
behaviors in their natural environment. There is Aristotelian
8. Catharsis for naïve Whiteman-audience who Pities and Fears
this could happen to them.
ANTENARRATIVE ABOUT COMMUNITY (antenarrative is
not told in the story, but depends on fore-having an initiation
into the Aboriginal secret meaning of roles in community)
ANTENARRATIVE ABOUT COMMUNITY IN RELATION TO
LARGER ECOSYSTEM (Again a secret initiation into how
community is fore-structuring & fore-concepting to be self-
sustainable in its human relations)
ANTENARRATIVE ABOUT SPIRITUAL ECOLOGY (Again, a
secret fore-telling limited to Shamanic leaders divination
meditations)
2nd LEVEL: ANTENARRATIVE ABOUT COMMUNITY
(antenarrative is not told in the story, but depends on fore-
having:
Crane imposed his view on crow: only eat cooked fish
Crane as expert leader does not share knowledge
Crane abused power, imposed his truth as only one
Crane does not teach crow to feed himself
Crane used knowledge only for personal use
Crane kept crow dependent
Crane had all 3 roles; Catch, Cook & Divide catch
Crane had power monopoly-ownership of fish
With knowledge comes great responsibility to whole
community!
Crow’s eyes turn white
Crane’s voice is changed
9. 3rd LEVEL: ANTENARRATIVE ABOUT COMMUNITY IN
RELATION TO LARGER ECOSYSTEM
fore-structuring & fore-concepting sustainably
Do not fish or take resources, from one place; be nomadic
If stuck in one place, take only what is needed; let stock recover
Stay in 1 place too long, one forgets link between story and
land
Over fish upstream & down river you deplete whole food chain
Maintain breeding stock of plants & animals by “Eco-Farming”
Behave with Responsibility towards Other Communities
Crane does not own the river or fish communities
Revenge, vendetta, pay-back or blood feuds will disintegrate
entire society
Therefore Rule is only Crane can punish Crane; Only Crow can
Punish Crow
4th LEVEL: ANTENARRATIVE ABOUT SPIRITUAL
ECOLOGY (Again, a secret fore-telling
Spiritual Action. More than just talking & listening
Practice spiritual ceremonies on “Learning Tracks”
Have actual experiences of Spiritual Ecology; Learning form
Real Cranes & Real Crows
Meditative journeying to ecological world
Shamanic journeying to Lowerworld of helping spirits
Shamanic journeying to Upperworld of spiritual teachers &
ancestors
Shamanic divinations (fore-telling & fore-sight)
10. 1st LEVEL: Learning from Mom as child
2nd LEVEL: Prepare to Walk to Other Communities
3rd LEVEL: Walk about to have own Community-Ecology
Experiences
4th LEVEL: Spiritual Journeying to Ancestors; Shape-shifting
in Cosmos

Principle of Surrender
1. The Art of Listening. I cannot speak and listen at the same
time. I can listen with a mind open to all the possibilities.
2. The Art of Wisdom. Surrender is Not submission. Surrender
is the wisdom of humility.
3. The Element of Air. Breathing air is life. When you are born,
you trash for the first breath. In fear, you hold your breath,
4. The Element of Earth. I am a living walking body that is its
own ecosystem, but that ecosystem is in change with the
ecosystems of Earth and cosmos.
5. The Element of Water. Water is life. The human body is 65%
water, 75% at birth.
6. The Element of Fire. Our biological body is 37.2 trillion
living cells, an ecosystem of microorganisms and microbes, all
living cells, some are symbiotic settlers.
11. 10 Minute Break
Boje presents
NMSU’s and New Mexico’s and Society’s
BIG LEADERSHIP MISTAKE
Montoya, the young professor shares that frustration.
“The amount of bureaucratic red tape and the endless levels of
hierarchy have become absurd,” she said.
“It’s not necessarily the reform that we need to get rid of, but
the logic behind it.
By importing corporate methods and management into the world
of academia, our profession is losing its meaning.

What’s Happening at NMSU is happening around the world!
“The result is that university presidents now replace seasoned
professors who retire with [less experienced] teachers who cost
less,” said Patrice Vermeren, head of the philosophy department
at University of Paris 8, located in the Parisian suburb of Saint-
Denis. “So the quality of the professors has declined.
12. It is oppressive systems on the students
As State Funding Decreases & Administrators hire less costly
adjuncts & raise tuition, COMPLEXITY increases
Administrators react by installing more digitalization, more
surveillance hierarchies, more outcome assessments, more
administrative assistants, and do more privatization, and so on.
Administrators build administrative orders that CLAMP DOWN
on the remaining professional faculty, and technocratic
structures to lockstep the adjuncts and everyone into a
Taylorized system, a Fayolized administrative order, and a
Weberian bureaucracy unequalled in all history.

15. Be in AWARENESS of our own Embodiment by attuning to
Ecosystem and to Others. The Body is several triangle
combinations at once.
BODY = SELF + AWARENESS because the self exists by its
awareness of its embodiment
BODY = SELF + AWARENESS + ECOSYSTEM because the
body is an ecosystem of trillions of microbiotic living critters in
transaction and transformation with the macro ecosystems of
place, planet, and cosmos.
What Paula Gunn Allen (2008) calls are walking planetary
ecosystem is not one body, rather it is a critter-conglomerate
(See Boje's, 2017, Principle of Surrender).
BODY = SELF + AWARENESS + OTHER because to be a
leader or a consultant or a person is combining SELF care with
AWARENESS of the complexity that overwhelms everyone's
life & relating to OTHERS (people, events, things, entities).
In 2017 the relation of Self and Other in Awareness of the
overwhelming fear, anxiety, turbulence .... has to be
counteracted with Awareness of how to attune body to being
fore-caring for self and for others. Be in Awareness of
Otherization. The haves have minimal Awareness of the
marginalization of the have-nots.
BODY = SELF + AWARENESS + OTHER + ECOSYSTEM
16. because the body is all these bodies together. We are a walking
ecosystem of trillions of critters in transaction and
transformation with Other body-ecosystems, in relation to the
ecosystems of micro and macro scales. This awareness of
zooming in and out, from microbiotic to macro-socioeconomic,
to mega-cosmos scale, and back again, is what is called fractal
