INTRODUCTION
• A Visit to the Zoo:
Introduces students at any educational level to the
zoo’s basic missions of preserving and protecting
individual animals or species, and to educate and
entertain human patrons.Provides enough flexibility to
be useful regardless of the student’s geographical
location and proximity to any zoo they might
experience.A Visit to the Zoo offers a variety of
perspectives from which to launch lessons. Leads are
provided in the areas of planning, safety, biomes,
ecosystems, animal species, exotic species, animal
behavior, species adaptability, time of day, seasons of
the year, the five senses, and human emotions.
What is a Zoo?
• A zoo is a park that cares for many animals that live on land.
• People enjoy zoos because we can learn about other parts of the
world where different animals live in the wild.It’s fun to watch them
play together. Sometimes they play with us.
• At the zoo we discover what animals like to eat and drink, and when
they like to sleep and play.
• Many animals live at a zoo. They may have been hurt and can’t live
without help from people.Some come from families that have
always had people take care of them.
• A zoo is a safe place for these animals to live.
•
Overview of a Visit in the Zoo:
• Plan your visit and discuss safety rules.
• Develop map reading and orientation skills.
• Discuss provisions and time management.
• Discuss biomes and ecosystems.
• Discuss exotic species of plants and animals.
• Discuss animal behavior.
• Discuss human senses and emotions
• Wrap up today’s visit at the zoo.

• Time:Plan how long you will be at the zoo. What time will you get there and what time will you
leave?
• Weather:Check the weather forecast. Staying dry and comfortable helps you enjoy a visit to the
zoo. Check the weather and dress appropriately.
• What do we need?
Bring your own drinks and snacks, or have enough money to buy them at the gift shop if you need
them.
Wear shoes that are comfortable to walk in and gloves for your hands if you’re pushing your own
wheelchair.
Map Key:
A zoo can be a big place. We will use a map to help us find where different animals are, the
bathrooms, a nurse, or help if we get lost.Let’s look at the map so we know where to start our
visit.Map Reading:Look at a zoo map and review the KEY. The key will have graphic representations
of bathrooms, first aid, snack and gift shops, etc.Look at the entrances. Decide where you will start,
then check the map to see if the exhibits or facilities to your right, left and in front of you match
where you think you are starting.Get Help: Teach the student to find help from employees. Point
out the different uniforms. You might ask a zoo employee to show you where you are on the map.

INTRODUCTION • A Visit to the Zoo: Introduces students at any educational level to the zoo’s basic missions of preserving and protecting individual animals or species, and to educate and entertain human patrons.Provides enough flexibility to be useful regardless of the student’s geographical location and proximity to any zoo they might experience.A Visit to the Zoo offers a variety of perspectives from which to launch lessons. Leads are provided in the areas of planning, safety, biomes, ecosystems, animal species, exotic species, animal behavior, species adaptability, time of day, seasons of the year, the five senses, and human emotions.

What is a Zoo? • A zoo is a park that cares for many animals that live on land. • People enjoy zoos because we can learn about other parts of the world where different animals live in the wild.It’s fun to watch them play together. Sometimes they play with us. • At the zoo we discover what animals like to eat and drink, and when they like to sleep and play. • Many animals live at a zoo. They may have been hurt and can’t live without help from people.Some come from families that have always had people take care of them. • A zoo is a safe place for these animals to live. •

Overview of a Visit in the Zoo: • Plan your visit and discuss safety rules. • Develop map reading and orientation skills. • Discuss provisions and time management. • Discuss biomes and ecosystems. • Discuss exotic species of plants and animals. • Discuss animal behavior. • Discuss human senses and emotions • Wrap up today’s visit at the zoo.
  • 8. plan : visit to the zoo • Time:Plan how long you will be at the zoo. What time will you get there and what time will you leave? • Weather:Check the weather forecast. Staying dry and comfortable helps you enjoy a visit to the zoo. Check the weather and dress appropriately. • What do we need? Bring your own drinks and snacks, or have enough money to buy them at the gift shop if you need them. Wear shoes that are comfortable to walk in and gloves for your hands if you’re pushing your own wheelchair. Map Key: A zoo can be a big place. We will use a map to help us find where different animals are, the bathrooms, a nurse, or help if we get lost.Let’s look at the map so we know where to start our visit.Map Reading:Look at a zoo map and review the KEY. The key will have graphic representations of bathrooms, first aid, snack and gift shops, etc.Look at the entrances. Decide where you will start, then check the map to see if the exhibits or facilities to your right, left and in front of you match where you think you are starting.Get Help: Teach the student to find help from employees. Point out the different uniforms. You might ask a zoo employee to show you where you are on the map.
