Revolution in Power Plant technology:
 In 1868 a hydro electric power station was designed and built by
Lord Armstrong at Cragsid, England.
 In the autumn of 1882, a central station providing public power
was built in Godalmi, England
 In 1882 a public power station, the Edison Electric Light Station,
was built in London.
 In September 1882 in New York, the Pearl Street Station was
established.
 In 20th century hydro &Steam Power Plant are built Large
numbers.
 Five hydel power projects(5,789 MW ) in Pakistan
 The Neelum-Jhelum Hydroelectric Project is being constructed
over river Neelum.
TYPES OF POWER PLANTS:
 Conventional power
plant
(under the earth)
1. Fossil fuels
2. Coal
3. Nuclear power plant
4. Geo thermal
5. Oil power plant
 Non- Conventional
power plant (Above
the earth)
1. Solar power plant
2. Bio gas power plant
3. Necular power plant
4. Hydel power plant
5. wind power plant etc..
Turbine & Power Plants:
 power stations contain one or more generators, a
rotating machine that converts mechanical power
into electrical power. Generators are attach with the
Turbine.
 The relative motion between a magnetic field and a
conductor creates an electrical current
 The energy source in PS fossil fuels such as coal, oil,
and natural gas to generate electricity.
What is
TURBINE?
A TURBINE IS A DEVICE WHICH CONVERTS THE
HEAT ENERGY OF STEAM INTO THE KINETIC
ENERGY & THEN ROTATIONAL ENERGY.
TYPES OF TURBINE
On the basis of principle of operation
1.Impulse turbine
2.Reaction turbine
3.Impulse- Reaction turbine
What is Reaction turbine:
The steam expands while flowing over the moving
blades and thus gives reaction to the moving
blades. Hence the turbine is called Reaction
turbine.
Stages
Blades
Newton’s third law of motion – For every action there is an equal
and opposite reaction
Reaction Turbines
 In this type of turbine, the high pressure steam does not
initially expand in the nozzle as in the case of impulse
turbine, but instead directly passes onto the moving
blades.
Advantages of Reaction Turbine:
 It have all advantage of Impulse turbine
 Large Power create
 Efficiency is high
 Medium and high Power create is mostly use

Revolution in Power Plant technology:  In 1868 a hydro electric power station was designed and built by Lord Armstrong at Cragsid, England.  In the autumn of 1882, a central station providing public power was built in Godalmi, England  In 1882 a public power station, the Edison Electric Light Station, was built in London.  In September 1882 in New York, the Pearl Street Station was established.  In 20th century hydro &Steam Power Plant are built Large numbers.  Five hydel power projects(5,789 MW ) in Pakistan  The Neelum-Jhelum Hydroelectric Project is being constructed over river Neelum.
