On July 17 2015, LinkedIn & CivicAction will partner to host the first YouthConnect event, a FREE capacity-building conference. The event will provide hands-on training from LinkedIn on how to teach youth to get on LinkedIn and strengthen their professional brand; build and leverage their network; understand how the job market works; find entry-level jobs. This event is geared at helping to level the playing field so all youth, including youth facing barriers, can profile their talents online and find meaningful employment.
The conference is all about increasing the capacity in the Greater Toronto Area for both community agencies and employers to use LinkedIn and other resources to reduce youth unemployment.
The conference will have three audiences:
1. Employers who want to gain practical tips and recommended resources for finding, hiring, and supporting youth who face multiple barriers to employment
2. Youth workers who directly support young people in finding employment
3. Young people who want to learn more about using LinkedIn to progress their career and are interested in championing this amongst their peers
Hopefully you can leverage this presentation to help bring youth online for opportunities, as LinkedIn continues to work to realize the Economic Graph, starting with our youth.

Editor's Notes
We first started painting a picture of this vision roughly three years ago. And at that time, it was just that: A vision. But a funny thing happened over the last five years. Our vision started to become a reality:
~280M members, 200+ countries, 20+ languages
3.5M active company profiles
300k jobs
Tens of thousands of standardized skills, 3B+ endorsements
Billions of weekly updates, 1.5M Groups,15M presos on Slideshare, Pulse, Influencers
The only thing standing in the way of our vision being realized is scale, and that will come with time. Over next ten years, the economic graph will be a reality and it will forever change the way talent connects with opportunity (can add examples of closing the skills gap, students determining their path, economists doing research, etc.)
The only thing standing in the way of our vision being realized is scale, and that will come with time. Over next ten years, the economic graph will be a reality and it will forever change the way talent connects with opportunity.
How many of you have bought a pair of Nike shoes in the past few years? Or an apple product like a MacBook or an iPad? How much of that purchase decision was made before you arrived at the store? For some people, the answer would be 100%. It was just a matter of going into the store to make the transaction.
For many people, the decision wasn’t entirely made in advance, but it certainly wasn’t all made in the store either. They went in with a lot of information already in their minds. Nike’s reputation as a sport shoe innovator, their association with leading athletes in numerous sports, their universally known logo and its associated rallying cry “Just Do It”. All this moves people toward selecting Nike before they reach the store and influences their perceptions when they begin to compare. All things being equal, they are probably more likely to purchase Nike than a similar shoe from a lesser known manufacturer.
It’s no different with the many other consumer purchases you make. Brand moves you toward certain cars, electronics, and countless other products well before you make the ultimate purchase.
Car makers have massive advertising budgets because they know you aren’t going to test drive the dozens of cars in your price range. You’re going to be heavily drawn toward the brands you identify with, and if they don’t build a brand relationship with you, you’re never going to set foot inside one of their dealerships.
Don’t just highlight your own skills, get endorsed!
Adding skills and expertise makes it easy for your connections to endorse you for your knowledge and strengths, and helps you show up in relevant searches. Just click “edit” and start adding your skills!
Be sure to endorse the skills and expertise of your connections as well – it will encourage them to do the same for you.
And last but certainly not least in this section: Ask for recommendations.
There are few things that can help your job search as much as someone vouching for who you are and why you should be hired.
Ask some of your connections – like former coworkers and clients – to write recommendations of your work. Getting a strong recommendation usually requires asking for one, so don’t be afraid to make a delicate request. Reassure someone that these can be short paragraphs, unlike the college recommendation format, and can take less than 10 or 15 minutes.
Chip has a lot of connections, both organically earned as well as through his father’s association.
He is a couple of degrees connected to some pretty powerful players in the market.
This is what Joe’s network looks like. There are bright spots of opportunity everywhere, but he’s not connected to them.
And, unlike Chip, he doesn’t know where to start to make these connections.
Joe can join professional groups on Linkedin that focus on deep industry expertise - in hospitality - where he wants to work.
When he has questions about how to accomplish something at work, group members help him out with advice - and even some introductions.
The groups teach him things that Chip learns just by living his life:
What people in this industry talk about
What issues are top of mind
HOW they talk, what acronyms they use, what conferences they attend – and who the influencers are
It’s like a mini, virtual apprenticeship where he can “join the experts.”
Mobile is no longer the future. It is the here and now. Check out the statistics on mobile activity: <read from slide>
Something really impactful is that 50% of workforce will be composed of millennials by 2018….why do you suppose that is important?
They came of age during the mobile expansion
And when you think about what is important to millenials – sense of purpose, more $, responsibility and FLEXIBILITY are all top of list
Transition: so what does that look like in reference to LinkedIn? Before we hit the next slide, let me pose a question: what percentage of our membership accesses LinkedIn using a mobile device? Type your guesses in the chat box.
LinkedIn’s Job Search tool essentially provides a database of over 300,000 jobs.
Click on “Jobs”, “advanced search” and then “More options” to find open positions by keyword, title, company, zip code, function, industry, years of experience and date posted.
You may also find it helpful to browse the list of “jobs you may be interested in” that will pop up when you go to this page. They are customize especially for you based on information in your profile (yet another important reason to keep it up to date!).
You can easily click on the name of the job to read the full job description, have the opportunity to contact the job poster, view the potential salary range for the position, and even to apply. You can also click through to read more about the organization on its Company Page.
Most importantly, this screen shows you if any of your first or second-degree connections work at this company. Again, return back to the lesson of asking your first-degree connections for their insights as well as an introduction to someone who works there – possibly even their hiring manager. Remember: 70% of jobs actually come through networking so find out who you know!
You can easily “Apply” online through the link or save it for a later search.
And don’t forget to follow the Company Page to stay up to date on opportunities and new developments!
Students find their first job on LinkedIn
Say: We want students to find their first jobs on LinkedIn. So, we launched the student jobs program – our 2011 goal is to get a rolling average of 20k jobs for students and recent graduates on LinkedIn by the end of the year. We saw that students were looking for jobs on the site – so we launched the student job portal.
http://www.linkedin.com/studentjobs
So that’s it when it comes to LinkedIn 101 for Job Seekers– the top tips to help you start leveraging this platform strategically. We hope it leads to many great opportunities.
