3. Leisure time can be defined as the opportunity afforded by free time to do
something. Furthermore it is an essential part of growing up, it provides a sense
of escape and relief that would allow an individual to in fact gather experiences
and knowledge through other means, rather than just studying. It is said that the
best way in which people learn are through actions and experiences, and
generally, most of either can only be learnt when one has leisure time to do so.
However, leisure time isn’t a luxury that everyone can possess. In certain
countries there is a high level of competition, and possibly due to a varying
education infrastructure or even a family’s financial state and demands, it would
all lead to greater pressure upon younger people to do better.
Levels of completion, exists almost throughout the world, however it differs from
country to country. Competition is healthy, but not everyone knows how to cope
with it. As a result most young people would either over indulge in trying to top
the class or better the other. Eventually neglecting one’s own needs. This has a
knock on effect; too much studying would lead to less sleep, poorer time
management is also a major factor, students could look for brain stimulating
drugs to carry out ‘all nighters’ this would further effect their social and family life,
or even lead to further wellbeing disorders. Such extents that younger people
take to out beat their completion is ever growing, newer ways and methods are
being discovered. The concept of healthy competition is somewhat slowly
diminishing.

In addition, another main factor is the stability of the education infrastructure as
whole. There are varying education boards and structures worldwide, some more
intense that others. Because of the wavering intensities it could possibly mean
younger people in a more intense education structure would have a lower leisure
time rate in comparison to a much looser structure. Furthermore, there could be
changes within the education system itself that would lead to lower leisure time
for younger people; such as the lack of international education for international
students. As a result it would be much too difficult for an international student to
adapt to a local system, especially if it was in different language and board. This
would require a lot of time and effort to adapt. For instance, the general
Malaysian the education board is PMR for the ages of seventeen to eighteen,
however in other countries such as the UK, U.A.E they follow O Levels or IGCSE
Cambridge. All these factors would provide a new level of difficulty for migrating
students or even local students if the language of the basic education system
were changed in total.
Most cases of leisure deprivation are a result of a family’s financial state or
demands. The pressure that is exerted upon an individual if their family was in a
poor financial situation, would greatly be felt on the shoulder’s of the individual as
they would have to work twice as hard to better themselves and to provide the
best or their family. Consequently this would result in very little or no leisure time
can be enjoyed or experienced. If there was a change in the education system,
extra tuition fees might not be provided and this would further enhance the
5. pressure and deprived the individual from any leisure time, as they would
possibly need to find work or part time work, in order to aid their education.
These cases are seen worldwide, however a high concentration can be observed
in developing countries or low-income countries. Subsequently demands from
family or having to live up to expectation from ones siblings or parents are one of
the most important reasons as to why younger people intentionally sacrifice their
own leisure time, to prove themselves to their family, and to succumb to the
pressure exerted by expectations.
On the whole, in certain countries there is a high level of competition, and varying
education infrastructure and even a family’s financial state and demands would
altogether lead to greater pressure exerted upon younger people to do better in
their studies. However, education and grades do not define a person, more than
anything, it is the values and skills that people pick from their encounters with
problems and situations that shape them into who they are. Pressure will always
exists, but the trick is to let pressure work for you rather than fight it, or succumb
to it.
