The whole idea of critical regionalism to my inclination is a deviation from the international movement apparent to
the author. However this apparent in individualism of architecture style is the intention to the movement. “Form
follows function” much like how it is apparent in vernacular architecture, however the movement is not an exact
implication of it.The directional approach towards a more modern culture and look in terms of architecture is what
critical regionalism stands for vs the idea of the past and its relation to heavy culture in architecture. Regional critical-
ism is a modern touch without forget the essence of the past and its culture entirely.
A good example of this type of approach is evident in Japanese architecture, and they way In which the perceive,
process and redistribute ideas without the maintaining of culture and the re approach of the modern touch in the
architecture present. The symbolism that is reinterpreted is the best example In my opinion of regional criticism.
The way in which the source or spurt of an idea grows and evolves throughout its design cycle and applied to the
minimalist and small volume spaces in Japan are incredible in terms of maintaining all the essence of what Japan
and Japanese architecture is. The attention to the smallest detail and the purpose of every corner and the creation
of multi-spaces or functions are the some of the core elements of being theoretically critical of a space.
One of the fascinating saying that captured my attention, is what he said about critical regionalism and
architecture. The interaction between space and user is architecture. and without these, there can be no
movement forward in any direction. He then goes o to talk about human interaction in megalopolis and how it
diluted the boundaries of it.
However this is inevitable due to the fact of urban-ism as countries strive forwards the idea of money comes into
play and such value may diminish, the separation between districts in an urban contexts becomes even more
blurred. And eventually leads to placelessness. All I critical regionalism is a possible direction to approach if the
intentions are met.
